Jig Fishing For Beginners - Jigging Rigs, Tips & Tactics
For this latest episode, with a big thanks to retail tackle giants Angling Direct, we try something a little different as we head off for a spot of Jig fishing, with fishing guide Jonny Stephenson. Jonny is an expert in this field and has fished all around the world, he also runs his own guiding business and is sponsored by lure fishing supremo's Spro.
What we know about Jig fishing can be written on the back of a postage stamp, so we head into the session complete novices, hoping to pick Jonnys brains about all things Jig related, including rigs, tips and general all-round tactics.
If you are already a seasoned jig/lure fishing angler then this probably won't be the video for you, but if you're not and you fancy having a go at it yourself (like we did) then you may find it useful.

this is what got me back to fishing since over 10 years ago. i like the idea of having little equipment . since i restarted last year with a jig set up i caught my first pike and caught a scond one this year . first on a spinner and a jig head. Shakespeare ugly stik travel rod, braded line and flourocarbon

before last weekend id only ever fished with the good old worm and a hook, but i tried a jig for a change and i caught my first pike and the biggest bass ive ever caught. Jig fishing is where its at.

With this colder weather the fish have the feed bag on so I've been doing some vertical jigging by kayak launches and rocky walls. Micro tackle for the change of pace and experience

After a fishing layoff for a decade, I've bought stuff for jig fishing for Perch........I'll be going this weekend and midweek for a couple of 2 hour sessions to get me back into this after a long layoff......Needless to say, I've never tried this style of fishing before with lightweight gear.....and I'm looking forward to it

I bought a rod for 20$ and a set of jigs for 2$ and catch walleyes near me all the time. I subbed simply for the truth the guy stated you don't need hundreds of dollars or pounds of gear. a 20$ lure or a 1$ lure, if the fish aren't hungry they simply will not strike no matter how much money you spend.
You're 100% right there mate! I always think like that when I fish from the beach... if the fish aren't there you can't catch them! Whether you have £10's worth of tackle or £1000's worth of tackle. You can't put a price on watercraft etc :-) Hope your fishing is going well.

Its great you can just go and watch a very informative video like this for beginners cuz when i was younger i had to wait for john Wilson every Sunday evening for all my information it was a much more difficult process getting information on all the tackle used because their's so much where do you begin if you really don't know and theirs no UA-cam or Google??

I like how you don't try to push any specific brands. American anglers are way too commercialized and always pushing some brand or another. Glad to see that you don't need fancy equipment to catch fish

that's rockland st mary I went there before christman caught 6 pike in one day from there nothing big still a good day river wesum in Norwich is so good my mate had 3Ib 8oz perch this year and we had so many pike

I catch big fish in salt water with big soft jigs. They work great but a big cod will rip them up soon. I repair them with clr glue, basically superglue, I dust the tear with backing soda then squeeze it together and let the glue soak in. Works great, just don’t glue it to your finger.

Spend some more time on the lake, you'll make your rod worth the money :P
just simple,you are not ready to use that rod! put that rod on corner after clean,start use cheap rod watch in utube and keep practicing out on shore,,pay attention how sucesfull guys catching the fishs,,after a while you gona go back on you 380$ rod and gona use in right way and how he deserv! if you gona go this way I am sure gona make your rod worth for what you payed
my 2 favs for walleye and pike swirl tail grubs and crank baits.

Hey guys great video! I have one question. Im from Denmark and up here we fish in the ocean with a lot of cods and makrel. Do these work on those aswell u think? our weather is mostly grey and snowing or raining so what type of color would u think u should go with? Atb -
Hi mate, glad you enjoyed the video and thanks for taking the time to comment. These things would work for Cod and Mackerel, however you'd potentially use something slightly bigger for Cod. Colour wise it's best to experiment throughout your session, as different things will work on different days. Some people will say in bright conditions, something dark will work best and then when it's dull and grey something brighter will work better.

+davie-m You can get a nice little ultra light spinning rod for half that. I reckon you could be set up and ready to fish for £60 or so, or see if you could get a whole outfit second hand off ebay!

You are right there +arcanekrusader exactly what I just said, it's amazing how much tackle has come on throughout the years! You can get some really nice bits of kit now relatively cheap.

Fishing has become far too commercial these days as every thing is now driven by big business. All the massive fish of the past were taken on tackle home made and invented, by anglers who had to do a proper job for a living. Just to name two Richard Walker & Fred J Taylor. We still have that great angler Bob Buteux who is still catching dream fish on home made tackle. Making do with what you have got will not stop your catching big fish or enjoying your self! But if you stop thinking about your fishing then you will stop catching.

you get what you pay for i spent 120 on a savage gear 2-7 gram rod and gunki reel few spikey shads and tbh thats cheap for what im used to paying for

Brilliant, I have just started taking a renewed interest in fishing again and have been watching a guy called Nick, The informative Fisherman, The principals are exactly the same, I will be watching your videos again and would only suggest two things, show a bit closer on the hooking and try and explain a bit about gear to use or links. so how do you know at what depth is your jighead (unless you feel that you hit bottom)?
Secondly - can you do the style of always hitting bottom, then picking it up, hitting bottom and so on. Basically dragging through bottom. Or would this be bad idea?
Hi Tom, in this video we were slowly bouncing the jig head along the bottom, tweaking it every so often to imitate an injured bait fish.

When fishing with soft plastics, what size rod should you go with? Like what action, length, sensitivity, etc?
It depends on what you're fishing for and where you're fishing really. If you click the tackle box link in the video description you'll see a list of what we used. Hope that helps a little. :-)

You hit that spot when the water was to low! If you'd have gone a bit further down the road, and on to the next couple of staithes you'd have been in for a chance of a very nice perch. ;)

I can only afford one good rig right now. I got a daiwa fuego ct baitcaster and I was going to pair it with a kast king Royale legend 7’ mh rod. I want to be able to fish anything from crappie to catfish to bass. Would that work? Any info helps. Thanks!

That’s a bit heavy for small jigs mate but for larger lures for pike it would be fine

lads top video just new to drop shot and sort lures .can yous help do I need to buy expensive rod reel size of rod and what best reel I got sixft spinning rod and rovex 3000 whit 15ob braid wold I go bigger just money is tight a moment. good tips in video will be looking at more.tight lines.

+From The Waters Edge TV I'm lucky enough to live 2 mins away. Had some lovely fish from there. Get the conditions right and you can see the perch hitting the fry shoals. There's the odd pike in there too. If you fish if again, walk up the track past the bird hide and fish the inlet from the main river. There's some interesting stuff swimming about! ;)

For that type of fish, does the hook should touches the ground? why is that you were not using a bobber?
Jake Daez you dont need a bobber as the you feel the predatory fish attack the lure or jig u will feel it go tight then strike bobbers or floats uk you use mistly for course fish dunno where u live but in uk we use a bobber for roach rud perch carp bream tench ect jigging is predators in uk we go 4 perch pike zander and leisureing a weight that can free run down the line and stops and hook lengh mostly for bigger fish eg carp barbel bream on a allarm hope this hellped

I honestly can't remember tho! If you click the Tackle Box link in the video description you'll see the make we are using though. :-)
Considering you can catch 10 pound fish with 4 pound mono I wouldn't worry too much. go for whatever you can spool yourself with cheap and see how that feels. With confidence you'll soon drop to much lower pound braid.

Yes mate, we're in England. A rod licence is £30 for two rods and £45 for 3 rods.
I guess that sounds like a dumb question on the surface but sometimes people turn around and say something like "NO!! IM FUCKING WELSH YOU IGNORANT TOSSER!!"
What os the best line too use with that jigs? Mono multi or the invisible one
Hi Hugo, we'd probably use braid when jig fishing, it's zero stretch means you can keep in contact with the lure alot easier.

Does anyone know a good micro jig fishing setup ? I’ve been told I’m looking for a medium light 7 ft pole with low casting weight paired with a 1000 size reel; is this correct ? And if so could I get any recommendations on a combo that’s good value for money? I’d like to spend max of £100 for the rod, reel, line and some jig heads; I know this isn’t a huge budget and I prob sound like a idiot but I’d love to try this type of fishing. I bought some lures online but they dont get into the water, they swim on the water , any tips ?
It could be that you've bought poppers/surface lures, or lures that only shallow dive. (Often with these the more you wind them the deeper they dive?) Are the lures hard lures with a vein/lip on the front?

Hi Tyler, with these you're really only looking to catch Perch, however Pike and Zander would also eat them too I guess. These were fished to around 10ft in depth I believe, they were relatively light. You could use a similar thing, just heavier, in deeper water.

is there a time of year when UL jig fishing is simply not effective? I did really well in the margin of my local canal last summer, but started going again this April 2016 and haven't had a bean so far. Even though the canals are exempt from the close season, as far as UL jig fishing is concerned, is it better to observe the 15th March - 15th June close season?
Hi +Peter Edwards I think in theory it should work anytime of year, providing the water is relatively clear. Well for it to be most effective anyway. I guess the warmer months when the fish are more active would be better too.
Doesn't jigging in clear water spook the fish sometimes? On canals when the margins are clear, I find perch in particular a bit finicky. It's like if you can see them, then they can see you. I like a bit of colour in the water, I think it helps when jigging in the margin beneath your feet. It only takes a few passing narrow boats however to turn the clarity of the water to something resembling turd soup.

Some are and some aren't it depends on what type of jig/lure you are using :-)

Brian Bryant many people use floats with jigs. If you use the float it keeps the jig at the same depth good when you want it just off the bottom or a certain depth an you know when you got a bite it is also effective when windy out if set up properly you can get it to move with the wind which can provoke fish to attack it. Look up trout magnets they are super effective with floats.
