1) What fish (panfish, bass, pike?) - this will determine size of lures: which will determine test of your tackle system. 2) Depth and vegetation will determine if your lure will be floating, sinking or suspending. 3) Choose a quality producer. Choose the appropriate lure by construction that you LIKE and BELIEVE IN. Start with 3 basic colors: light, colorful and dark 4) Work that lure until you have figured out it's play. Do not start by buying bunch of random lures, it's money wasted. For instance: I fish for pike in shallow lagoon lakes with semi-clear water with brown tint. For this instance I choose suspending lipless jerkbaits (buster jerk) that work 0.2-1.0m deep, unweighted large silicon, poppers, mice, ducks and frogs as topwater lures. Size of lures is medium (120mm) to large (bigbait), consequently I use heavy baitcaster, thick braid, thick fluro leader and main colors for lures are yellow-orange-red thru gold to brown to black and silver-beige for clear days.
This is a very good commentary, we are the sole victims of marketing ☝️far too often buying new toys and being lured (hooked😅) to invest more and more in fishing gear ...while by end of the day you should be able to figure out what exactly you need? Or what to keep in your tackle box (essential) again what Nat is suggesting to us -is just a sobering concept: try and buy only this what may work at given aquatic (fishing) area and perhaps stick to your shoe laces? it may save you not only money 💰 but disappointing moments....
Endless combination, braid line has its own advantages not recommended for winter / ice / fishing; but what we have in our arsenal (fishing rods , lures etc.. ) gives you a tool to finish the job? OutSmarting a given fish specie is our basic goal?
I fished a good amount in college with a buddy who knew EVERYTHING. I am getting back into fishing again and this video was absolutely brilliant. Jogged my memory about a few things but gave so much new information for me. Fish on. 🤟
Topwater hits are mythical to me at this point. I've had one topwater bite ever, in about 15 years of bass fishing haha. I don't know what the deal is.
Frogs are super effective for me in heavy vegetation for bass, pike, bowfin, and musky. Give that a shot sometime! Other topwaters like Whopper Ploppers are more hit-and-miss.
I freaking love top water bites. It’s so addicting and truly a mythical experience lol. But geez do they only hit maybe once or- if your lucky enough- twice or more an hour. Frogs are what I use and I typically don’t use anything else because I’m too stubborn trying to get top water bites ha
@@Radbiker33357 Once in a while you can find that magical spot where every other cast with a frog results in an explosion. I'll be out froggin' next week and hope to find one of those spots!
@Ryanoceros06 I've been fishing for years and seldom land a fish on a topwater. But, when I have it's a blast. A old school Jitterbug is my go-to. The original Arbogast not the cheap China imitations.

Hi Nat, Great video. I’ve only started fishing recently but has always loved fishing as a young child. Only recently have I found myself the extra time to embrace this love of mine. I found your videos quite helpful however there’s a specific question I wanted to ask if you would indulge me it would be godsend. I live close to a murky river with about up to 8-10m depth of steady flow. I know from people and my own research that there are bass, perch, carp, tench and goldfish in the river but the majority fish population would be Redfins/European perch. There’s a section of the river where I know there are a lot of fishes there all day all night, I even saw patches of bubbles in the water everywhere in this area, I mostly bank fish but do have access to a kayak if needed and for the life of me I couldn’t catch a single fish. So my question is what type of lure/bait and/or technique should I be using to catch a fish any fish in this river?? I’m getting quite desperate at this point so any help would be greatly appreciated! And sorry for the rant.
I think my first choices would be to drop a worm on the bottom with a sliding sinker rig, or a heavy soft swimbait. Either of those can be casted a long way from the bank, and they are both excellent at catching a wide variety of species. The soft swimbait can also be worked effectively throughout the whole water column.
This video was 100% most helpful. Was given a tackle and lures and had no idea what they was used for till now after this video. The only thing i knew was zoom jig worms. so THANK YOU
One thing you forgot to mention for the hard body lures or crankbait as americans call them, you MUST use a snatch swivel like you did or tie a loop/rapala knot to aid with swim Otherwise they go sideways and wont swim
One of the best and most informative videos on getting started with lures. I have a tacklebox full of lures and had no idea how to use any of them besides in line spinners. Thanks for this video! I learned a lot

Thank you so much for this video! I have never quite understood how to utilize my lures as they were intended....until now. Awesome job on this video!!
This taught me so much I just bought a rod and I’ve been running the basic worm and hook simply because I had no idea what any of these other lures even did hopefully next time I go out I can actually hook one and also buy some lures that’ll work with the fish in my area
Inline spinner ( rooster tails, martin panther and bluefoxes ) are the best fish locator for me . I have caught everything from catfish , crappie, salmon , walleye, bass and much more on them . Over 50 years of fishing so far in my life and still loving it . I go an average of 3 times a week year round .
@@FishingwithNat , and if you use them enough you can learn to work them right on the surface of the water . It works great that way if you see fish going for a hatch .

Bro this is the greatest fishing video off all time I mean like it’s so informative so simple yet the information is insane this I just got into fishing and this will help me and my friends so much I will recommend this video to anybody I know who does know a lot
My go to this season has been taking a mini jig…forget the brand but it’s those 2$ mini jugs, in watermelon color…and then taking a watermelon color strike king rage tail soft bait, cutting half the body off, and threading it onto that jig. Keep the trailing tails/claws vertical for heavy sunfish ponds to mimic them, and for heavy crawfish ponds put them horizontal and let the jig hit all the way to bottom. Have been having crazy good large mouth, like, and pickerel luck with em.
The best vid I've seen in my 69 yrs of life. Your expertise and easy to understand AND visual lure swim techniques in n9rmal and slow mow is 10/10. Cheers from outback QLD AUSTRALIA.
Hi Nat, thank you for such a detailed video, I've been having a hard time finding these types of clear instructions on best bait-related practices, this was most helpful. Could you ellaborate on how you reel in topwater baits? You mentionned twitching them?
Some of them are just retrieved straight back - the retrieval speed can vary depending on the bait and water temperature. Twitching is common with most topwater baits, and is especially effective with frogs or "walking" baits where the idea is to walk it back and forth by twitching it all the way back. Baits meant for this tend to "walk" left and right each time you twitch them.
I just spent some money to update my fishing gear from when I was a kid (it was almost non existent) and was a bit nervous not knowing 100% what everything I had did but this helped tremendously
Ok tons of great info. Thank you so much. Learned so much from this. Like use more natrual color lures for muddy waters and bright lures for clearer waters. Thanks man.

I made a recent video to address exactly this type of question. ua-cam.com/video/rhhBPNUXYis/v-deo.html
#1 video for beginners to learn what lures to use. 10/10 informative gold.
Thank you
For anyone beginning fishing, always use live bait, spinnerbaits, also the tiny rubbery baits. ALMOST ALL FISH BITE THEM!
Good tips. Those are all great.
The roblox kid is giving good advice, W.

I'm getting "back into" fishing after about 30 years (havent been since i was about 8) and this is straight forward. Thank you for the great info.

Great video! In-line spinners are my favorite as well
Inline spinners are awesome. One of my most reliable confidence baits.
I’m so serious this is the most informational and easy to understand video I’ve ever seen better then what they played in school!!
Glad you enjoyed it! 🙂
Thank you ! So hard to find content that isn't all about bass lol
It's true. I target just about anything with fins.
Best video I've seen in a very long time about lures, the best part is the video of the lure in action.
Thanks - I appreciate the comments.
Start with 3 basic colors: light, colorful and dark
4) Work that lure until you have figured out it's play.
Good tips. Thanks for the comment.
Fish on. 🤟
Awesome - glad to hear that. Thanks for the feedback. I appreciate it.
I'm yet to catch a murray cod off the surface but everyone else gets boofed all the time
I freaking love top water bites.
The original Arbogast not the cheap China imitations.
ive been fishing basically my whole life but never taken it serious i just threw a worm out there lol its good to finally know the names of all these and when to use em! preciate you!
Glad you found it informative - thanks for the comment.
Hi Nat,
Great video.
Im new to fishing, and I just got all of my father's and my grandfathers tackle,, and this video helped a ton. Thank you so much!
Wonderful - thanks for the feedback.
Hello Nat, rumor has it you flew to Hawaii for winter time 😂 thank goodness you are back on UA-cam with so informative videos 📹 👍
That sounds nice. Nope, buried in snow and ice is more accurate.
This video was 100% most helpful. Was given a tackle and lures and had no idea what they was used for till now after this video. The only thing i knew was zoom jig worms. so THANK YOU
Glad I could help - thanks for the feedback, I appreciate it.
One thing you forgot to mention for the hard body lures or crankbait as americans call them, you MUST use a snatch swivel like you did or tie a loop/rapala knot to aid with swim
Otherwise they go sideways and wont swim
Snaps or loops can definitely help a hard bait to run straight. Good point.
One of the best and most informative videos on getting started with lures. I have a tacklebox full of lures and had no idea how to use any of them besides in line spinners. Thanks for this video! I learned a lot
I'm glad to hear it was helpful to you. Thanks for the feedback!
Thanks for the help this really gave me a better idea of what to use 🎉
Wonderful. Glad it was helpful to you.
This is a great primer. I love that you have snaps on many of them. They are convenient and I have always caught lots of fish with them.
Snaps are great for quick lure changes! Thanks for the comment.
amazing video
Thanks - I appreciate the feedback.
This was a really well put together video, he cut straight to the turkey on each subject.
Thanks - that's how I roll.
Haven't fished since I was probably 10, now 28 and getting back into it with my daughter. Your channel is one of the best I have ever seen. Thanks for the nice comment. Tight lines!
Moral of the video, pike eat anything and everything.

Thanks for making videos mate. I just caught my first peacock bass today and I wouldn’t have been able to do it if it wasn’t for this video. Cheers mate, you have no idea how grateful I am to you for helping me catch fish :)

I love fishing but I’m probably the worst fisherman around, in the last 3 years I’ve gone fishing about 3/4 times a year and haven’t caught a thing yet, but your videos have given me a newfound confidence to catch something next time I go out. Thank you so much!
Excellent. Good luck!
Thank you so much for this video! I have never quite understood how to utilize my lures as they were intended....until now. Awesome job on this video!!

I use to turn lures in the wood shop. Most people thought was so pretty and too nice to fish with.
I have several lures that are so beautiful, I've never used them. I actually bought them with the intent of hanging them on my wall.
Even 1y later this is one of the best vids i hAve seen as i am turnig 14 and going fishing on june 1st only 1 more day!🎉
Awesome - good luck fishing!
This taught me so much I just bought a rod and I’ve been running the basic worm and hook simply because I had no idea what any of these other lures even did hopefully next time I go out I can actually hook one and also buy some lures that’ll work with the fish in my area
Great - thanks for taking the time to leave this note. Good luck fishing!
Badass. Much respect to all fishers out there; bait, fly and lure. All techniques have their place.
Agreed.
Inline spinners are great!
@@FishingwithNat , and if you use them enough you can learn to work them right on the surface of the water . It works great that way if you see fish going for a hatch .
I’m new to fishing and Thank you so much for this video. This is a clear and concise video and great info on lures and when and how to use them. The actual visualization of them in the water helps it make sense and I can now better understand the function of the different lures. Thank you.

Big help dude. I got a 2nd hand box of lures for Xmas and haven't used them as I didn't know what to use. Now I do thank you so much.

Very well done, clear concise descriptions and the submerged videos really were a excellent touch.
Great - thank you for the feedback, I appreciate it
My go to this season has been taking a mini jig…forget the brand but it’s those 2$ mini jugs, in watermelon color…and then taking a watermelon color strike king rage tail soft bait, cutting half the body off, and threading it onto that jig. Keep the trailing tails/claws vertical for heavy sunfish ponds to mimic them, and for heavy crawfish ponds put them horizontal and let the jig hit all the way to bottom. Have been having crazy good large mouth, like, and pickerel luck with em.
Awesome - that sounds perfect to me.
The best vid I've seen in my 69 yrs of life.
Your expertise and easy to understand AND visual lure swim techniques in n9rmal and slow mow is 10/10.
In australian outback here, i fish in coffee coloured water for golden perch and inline spinners are all that work for me.
I'm Like and subbin so i can brain drain any inline spinner info.
Cheers from outback QLD AUSTRALIA.
Thanks so much - I really appreciate the kind words.
I have fished for many years and this still came useful, Amazing video!
Thank you 🙂
Been struggling to catch fish since I went off on my own, hopefully this video gets me some fish
Good luck!
the footage with how the lures move underwater is exactly what i was looking for, very nice
Great - thanks for the feedback
thank you nat, very helpful! i've gotten back into fishing but only ever used bait before, never lures. i'm excited to experiment :)

Thanks, I think this is the most helpful and clear video I’ve been able to find on this subject.

It's a tried and true spoon for salmon and trout too.
Ok tons of great info. Thank you so much. Learned so much from this. Like use more natrual color lures for muddy waters and bright lures for clearer waters. Thanks man.
Thanks for the comment. Use the natural colors in clearer water though, and brighter colors in muddy water to help the fish find your lure.
Awesome video, very informative and helpful for new starters. Thanks!
If the water is still cold by you, make sure to try a boy bait! We caught them pretty good on a couple weeks ago ua-cam.com/video/eDdMGHLOMFk/v-deo.htmlsi=hQJmvYbjJzPOmp34
