  • 1 year quick ownership review of my 2023 type r!
**Clarification on the part where I said you should not buy this car if you want to go fast: Definitely buy this car if you want to go fast on track, but what I meant is it won't be fast on straights.**

Love my 24 FL5 more and more everyday. I’ve had mine about 3 months and I feel like I’m still on the honeymoon and just as exited every time I slide in those incredible seats and roll through the gears like the first day I bought it. Thanks for the review !

I think this way about the hatchback version and it being my first car, sport touring cvt. I will keep it. in a few years get a second vehicle. I'm surprised no tints? any plans? that really change the whole look inside and outside.

A great Problem is really unfamiliar outside germany, the block of the K20C1 is weak & the cylinders tend to swing quite a bit due to the open-deck-construction...
It causes head-gasket loss & later cracking cylinders & even a cracked head.
      Only sollution is a closed-deck-mod...
Maybe Autobahn forces that damage, earliest gasket-loss im aware of was after 25k miles.
Big Problem is, the engine really runs fine even with damaged gasket or even cracked cylibders (no white smoke like Focus RS III).
& the shortblock remains the same from FK2R, FK8 to FL5...
Check for pressure on coolant-tank, if the Motor is complete cold after standing over night!

@@gt-r9035lots of us have multiple track days on these motors. Do you have any way to substantiate your claims? I’d be curious to read into it.

      @@jonnys_honda most reports come from a german WhatsApp-grp. We are 124 members & 10+ had the damage itself (FK2R & FK8).
One buddy twice. He ran 455hp crank & 470 ft-lbs (thats all the oem-turbo is capable). When his gasket was gone he got head planed, Athena-gasket, arp-head-studs, rods, pistons, the mhi-upgrade-turbo & wmi running 575 PS crank / 516 ft-lb. That was around 2019 / 2020 when we searched for a sollotion for that gasket-problem. 2nd gasket was done aprox 2k miles later. When his Tuner opened the Motor again, not only the upgrade-gasket was done, cylinders 3 & 4 were cracked.
After that he got sleeves & until now the Motor is runing fine (it gets regulary RELD-Tests).
His Tuner is 7mod, well known all around the world for mapping several FK2R & FK8 for time attack-championships in europe & asia.
He claims that he has done 50+ K20C1 (closed-deck-mod & sleeves) after failed gaskets. 7 or 8 of the ones in my WhatsApp-grp.
      He did 1 closed-deck-mod on a FL5 too & the short-block remained the same since 2015 FK2R.
Big Problem is,as mentioned before, the the K20C1 runs fine with damaged gasket & even cracked cylinders until the head breaks finally. That occours if you drive on and on.

      @@jonnys_honda okay, most knowledge-transfer takes place in WhatsApp, not forums anymore. I'm in a Group with 124 TypeR owners, FK2R, FK8 & FL5. 15+ had a broken head-gasket, 2 even cracked cylinders.
All startet in 2019 as some FK2R drivers noticed coolant consumption & pressure on coolant-tank, even when the Motor was cold. RELD-Test was positive.
Best known to me is the case of a buddy. In 2019 a broken head-gasket was suspected. At that moment he had 455 hp (@crank) / 450 ft-lb (thats the Maximum the stock turbo from FK2R/FK8 is capable of). He got an Athena-upgrade-gasket, arp-head-studs, the MHI-upgrade-turbo, rods, pistons, the head got planned and the tune led to 535 PS / 467 ft-lbs.
2500 miles later the upgrade-gasket was done, after opening the Motor crack appeared on cylinder 3 & 4 in 2020. He then got sleeves on top. He regulary does RELD-Tests & they stay negative. He did all with his Tuner 7mod.
7mod did already 50+ K20C1 in FK2R & FK8. Either closed-deck-mod when the cylinders are fine or with sleeves when the cylinders are cracked. 7mod remote tunes for other tuning-shops around the world & is well known in time-attack-championships in europe & asia.
There is no mileage, where the gasket fails definately. Lowest mileage, where the gasket was done on stock ecu i'm aware of, was a FK8 with 25k miles. Most K20C1 with stock-ecu get gasket-problems around 40k miles.
But that doesen't mean the gasket-damage is easy to detect. The Motor hides a gasket-damage or even cracked cylibders & runs fine instead.
Ways to notice: RELD-Test, pressure on coolant-tank on cold motor after staying over night, coolant consumption.
