Secondly, your house may have some changes since 2002 but it's still the same house. This car is better than a EP3... If a EP3 came out as new today, then perhaps it wouldn't be 47k... Your comparison between this car and a EP3 is terrible...
Focus RS seating position was fixed on later production models or could buy a kit for £500 to lower them anyway. Only really affected the optional Recaro buckets and wasnt as bad as some made out. I'm 6''2" and it never bothered me on mine
I test drove the FK8 before buying my Focus RS and I was really impressed by that car (I owned a Renaultsport Megane back then). Impressive chassis, great engine and gearbox, perfect seating position... I bought the RS mostly for tax reasons (it could be bought as a "van" in Belgium which made it much cheaper to own), but to be fair the FK8 was just a more sorted car I found. The RS has huge potential but you need a few tweaks to reach it whereas the Honda was good from stock. I would absolutely love to drive the new Type R.
This new Type R may have more power compared to the previous version, BUT... they also changed the gearing and it's actually a little bit slower than previous version!
EK9 will always remain the best to me, high revving b16b with plenty of character, and just like the FL5 red carpets, titanium gear knob, brilliant seats, LSD, tons of changes that set it aside from the regular chassis, FL5 looks good but it's priced itself into a category that it can't compete for daily use
I’m pumped that you graded the new Type R as a “Buy” it vehicle! I’m considering it as my next car (currently have a Honda Crosstour V6 EX-L) and the hatchback/fastback style has me spoiled. 👍
I used to own an FK8 Type R which I loved. I remember it being so precise and reliable when taking corners at speed. Something that I never experienced before or after. True, the design is outrageous for some, but is new FL5 Type R worth extra 15 grand?
I also have an Fk8 and this car isn’t worth an extra 14 grand. Also it is unobtainable. Unless you took out a PCP deal and put a deposit down before it was released so you couldn’t test drive one first it’s hell of a gamble. My dealer actually told me that I wasn’t eligible as I bought my cars outright.
Apart from the design, every other review I've seen of this car basically says that performance wise is identical to the previous gen. It even loses on a drag race for some reason. And on a track it's unnoticeably quicker
When I look at such cars and I just viewed your latest Golf R too, it really makes me wonder how far they've progressed from let's say, the Mitsubishi Evo 10 FQ 360 or 400. We're talking about cars built in 2008 to 12. Yes, better suspension, better ergonomics, much more electronics and gizmos like ambient lighting; but in actual driving experience?? Those top of the line STIs and EVOs were something else. I'd love to see anyone of these new top hatches get their ears trimmed by those cars. And the R is horrendously expensive to fix when anything goes wrong- Golf.
In the UK a mustang is unaffordable because of the massive fuel cost and fuel is so expensive here. If they made it that powerful it wouldn't be possible to be a daily driver for normal people unless you're from a county with really cheap fuel

No chance, give it a year and the true reviews will come out, Fk8 is the better car no doubt, this thing is just a crowd pleaser designed for the masses.
@@seansimmons5071 "Fk8 is the better car no doubt" I mean they're the same car for the most part... Most of the mechanical parts are interchangeable -- you can upgrade the FK8 with FL5 parts like the wider wheels, and you can upgrade the FL5 with FK8 parts like the shorter final drive ratio. I'm not sure it makes sense to say the FK8 is "the better car", when the FL5 is just a slightly different version of the same chassis with different styling. The 11th gen Civic is just the mid-cycle refresh of the 10th gen Civic after all. Granted, Honda have managed to make the 11th gen look quite different even though the A/B/C pillar angles are the same and the underlying body structure will be very, very similar. [Heck a lot of parts are even interchangeable back to the FK2 Type R, though that 8th/9th gen genuinely was a different chassis.]
It may have been a bit more accurate test, to drive it in hotter weather. The summer tyres in these temperatures may not enable the car to perform at its best. Nice review and nice car too. Always transport me back in the 90's, when i hear "Honda civic".
I just can’t get behind it, given the costs. A new type R will run you north of ~$50-$70k depending on availability and trim I’ve been a lifelong Honda boi but I just can’t justify that type of money for a *Honda* . Where I live, that price point could get you a new RS6 fully loaded, a used M2/3/4 comp, or even a used Porsche 718 cayman When compared to the big boys, Honda is way out of their price point. Almost no car enthusiast is going to say Honda > German engineering That’s why I sold my 2020 sportback and now I’m saving for a Porsche or Audi now
Thanks for your time and effort! I would rate the care 10 out of 10...hate that US dealers are marking up the price 15K + on these,.,love the car though
I’ve watched like 10 reviews of this car from a lot of the top reviewers an so far they all love this car. I’m really thinking of trading my Supra 2.0 for it
Type R styling has seemed to always split people. The ep3 I still think is one of the better looking hatchbacks on the road (I am of the persuasion though, that the majority of 90s-2000s styling was the best for the hot hatches). The fn2 still divides people on opinions too, but I gotta admit i just haven’t been able to like the recently type r styling. For me these good and bad from this and the previous model. I don’t think I will ever like that 3 pipe exhaust, but I do love the fact Honda still giving people a proper manual, I wonder how long it’ll be before we’re all forced to drive automatics!
Was really looking forward to this, planned my current deal to end after this had been out for a couple of years (even Honda can suffer from early version weirdness after all) as one last ICE hurrah before going electric. And then they announced the price... Sure they'll sell all of 'em even at £47k plus but it's WAY too expensive in my book. You're in full spec M135 territory there which is just ridiculous.
It's a better car. Far better build quality, more reliable and you won't get reamed as much by insurance companies and twats on scooters looking to steal shit.
I have an allocation for an FL5 here in the US but am wayyy down the list. Luckily I have other toys to keep me busy but this car is a future classic and very limited, so even a year+ from now when my number is called, it'll be worth the wait!!!
I remember the mk 2 type R being reviewed by clarkson on top gear and he absolutely annihilated it. It should’ve been selling load’s considering how good the old ‘bread van’ was, but you really didn’t see them around. He probably cost Honda 10’s of millions!!
The FN2 didn't come with an LSD as standard to begin with. Later model years did, which improved the car a lot. The default chassis balance was set to understeer which didn't help. The combination of stiff RE050A tyres and stiff suspension didn't help the ride, yet the Japanse FD2 had suspension that was far, far stiffer again... Once those things are corrected (e.g., smaller diameter wheels or more modern tyres with a softer sidewall, tweaking the rear end geometry or putting wider wheels on the front with lower pressures than the rear etc), it drives quite well IMO, the stock shocks are nice and taut and responsive and the car doesn't wallow like say a Focus ST 5-pot or Golf GTI Mk5 (shame it wasn't better out of the box, but Honda weren't that far off).
@@4Kandlez super cars are for the super rich, civic is reachable but heard UA-camr comment (cannot recollect who?) spend a max of £30K for a car. To crawl on the bumpy city narrow roads at 20mph like a deer 🦌 scared to be fined by the million cameras and also lose 3 points.
Check Throttle House, the reason why it's faster aound the track is because it comes standard with much better wheels, if you put the wheels of this one in a FK8, the FK8 is faster so they were a bit deceiving...

@@UnseenSpirit My house was 30% cheaper. This car is 150% more expensive. Your maths is terrible.
@@markclayden7654 firstly if your house from 2002 only went up by 30 percent, then it's either a really expensive house, you overpaid or you're in a bad area.
Secondly, your house may have some changes since 2002 but it's still the same house.
This car is better than a EP3... If a EP3 came out as new today, then perhaps it wouldn't be 47k...
Your comparison between this car and a EP3 is terrible...
I have booked one in US, 🥰 eagerly waiting for it to get in my hands😜🥰🥰🥰
Shit car
good for you!
Doesn't the new Type R have an insane markup by the dealers in the US?
Do you got msrp price? Or how much is the mark up?
@@fl3xxxo yeah its same price as an rs3 there
The last one was also great, I like the lower perfect seating position. Cars like a Focus ST or RS had that higher akward seats.
Focus RS seating position was fixed on later production models or could buy a kit for £500 to lower them anyway. Only really affected the optional Recaro buckets and wasnt as bad as some made out. I'm 6''2" and it never bothered me on mine
My father owns a focus st. Late 2017 ST3 and the seat goes very low because after facelift it can go low
Tomorrow i will go to Test it as well 😁😍
Wow Matt! Your reviews are incredible, I would buy all my cars from you.
This new Type R may have more power compared to the previous version, BUT... they also changed the gearing and it's actually a little bit slower than previous version!
Previous type R is my favourite one of type R series
How old are you?
@@EK4B16A2 12
Почему?
We need those cinematic gear changing shots again like in the toyota gr video🔥
U mean GR Aygo X? 😅
New Hondas feel so good to drive. The Accord Hybrids feel nice.
Nope. Heavier and reasonably blends in to common traffic more.
Can't have those two strikes at once
No. Get a i30 n
News : Honda is not receiving orders for new Type R in Japan since the monthly production is 400 and received 20K orders worldwide
Crazy the UK pricing. Same car lists at $44K USD on the the Honda USA site.
Hearing Mat Watson admit he loves it is amazing. It really must be special.
I m Japanese. I am grateful to Honda for producing great cars in this era. Taxes apply in Japan and can be purchased from 42,430 USD.
why do taxes apply, the car is made in your country???
the design is matured a lot, and love it way better than the old one
As a current FK8 owner I’m not convinced it is worth an extra £14,000. You could get a tidy EP3 for that.
Why would you want an ep3? Rubbish steering, handling is bad, zero steering feel and it looks like breadvan
@@davemorris6747 that’s mental I also bought mine outright
@@davidkelly2542 never driven one so have to take your word for it but they are likely to appreciate in value going forward.
Bossdave why are you arguing with alt accounts?
Apart from the design, every other review I've seen of this car basically says that performance wise is identical to the previous gen. It even loses on a drag race for some reason. And on a track it's unnoticeably quicker
If they made it a hatchback, Lowered the price and made it look better it becomes an actual civic.
Bascually a whole new car nessecary
Finally review about the new civic type r! Been waiting
Typical quality, never disappoint Honda forever!!!🤟
I still prefer the older style than the new. glad i got my type r when i did, otherwise i would have completely passed on this years.
13:51 "Git 'im!"
13:53 (in slo'mo Jenny's voice) "Run matt, run!"
Honda has always make a great car all their racing experience makes a better car
0:02 This view is incredible
Back not so much
i wish for $50k they could atleast make it 400hp. mustangs are pushin damn near 500 at only 40k nowadays
In the UK a mustang is unaffordable because of the massive fuel cost and fuel is so expensive here. If they made it that powerful it wouldn't be possible to be a daily driver for normal people unless you're from a county with really cheap fuel
Throttle house did a comparison with previous gen type R and this new one is slower
Not where it counts, on track, it Muller's the old ugly fk8 👍🏻
I'd rate the 2023 Honda Civic Type R a 10 out of 10, because it's the best hot hatchback ever made!!!🤩
I absolutely love the new Civic, definitely next car if I can get my hands on one.
Looks heaps better than the last model. On the plus side, it's £6,000 cheaper in Australia!
Heaps better, or maybe most boring
Cannot wait to see this car in Nurburgring 🔥
You probably won't
They have had 2 years to beat the record
Fortunately Michelins aren't that bad between 0-10 degrees C. Pirelli P Zeros? Not so much, apparently!
This car is perfect and I think we are on the same page about buying this new Honda. Thanks for reviewing it. ❤❤💙💙
Great review this about the best looking Type R ever produced
Simple, elegant design, love a auto box
It's quite slow 0-60 but its because FWD, in accelerationan handling its astonishing
I just can’t get behind it, given the costs. A new type R will run you north of ~$50-$70k depending on availability and trim
I’ve been a lifelong Honda boi but I just can’t justify that type of money for a *Honda* . Where I live, that price point could get you a new RS6 fully loaded, a used M2/3/4 comp, or even a used Porsche 718 cayman
When compared to the big boys, Honda is way out of their price point. Almost no car enthusiast is going to say Honda > German engineering
That’s why I sold my 2020 sportback and now I’m saving for a Porsche or Audi now
Thanks for your time and effort!
Good 0-60, about the same as Focus RS mk2 back in 2009
Was really looking forward to this, planned my current deal to end after this had been out for a couple of years (even Honda can suffer from early version weirdness after all) as one last ICE hurrah before going electric. And then they announced the price... Sure they'll sell all of 'em even at £47k plus but it's WAY too expensive in my book. You're in full spec M135 territory there which is just ridiculous.
M135i doesn’t have the looks though
It's a better car. Far better build quality, more reliable and you won't get reamed as much by insurance companies and twats on scooters looking to steal shit.
@@keynesianeconomics4113it’s 47k lmao. You can get an A45 for that money
@@OverIoad7 good luck with the maintenance on that
@@OverIoad7 A45s are around 50k plus but it’s worth it ngl
How good you describe the car 🚗 Well done mate!!!
Great for UK city roads at 20mph and then to open the taps to 30mph when the speed limit gets eased. Yeah 0-30mph
Doesn't that apply to all the other vehicles as well, such as Ferrari, Lambos, Porsche etc. People still buy em, now that's ludicrous
I don't care if it's slowest in a drag race, cause I know that it is fastest around the track (among other hot hatches)
Check Throttle House, the reason why it's faster aound the track is because it comes standard with much better wheels, if you put the wheels of this one in a FK8, the FK8 is faster so they were a bit deceiving...
a carwow review without the 0-60 test is uncomplete
Excellent review Mat!
It looks a whole lot better, that's for sure! The last one looked like a 17 year old boyracer and a DIY bodykit got together and styled it! 😂
The previous gen hot hatch are better in my opinion 😮💨
Right-hand drive with Alcantara steering wheels, which is came from Japan spec👍🇯🇵
