What a beautiful representation of Jaco, his professional and personal life, and, unfortunately, his sad ending. May the spirit of Jaco and his music live on forever. God bless his family.
Jaco and Lyle Mays juggling together at the end of the video (1:49.22) is so beautiful to watch, especially with the other band members of Joni Mitchell's backing band looking on (includingPat Metheny). Two absolute geniuses having fun. Does it get any better than that? RIP Jaco and Lyle.
I want to thank everyone who has worked on this documentary. This is what all the fans are waiting for several decades. Big thanks for all the effort put into it and for uploading this.
Incredible documentary and tribute to one of music's true geniuses. I saw Jaco live just once, with Kenwood Denard at 7th Ave South in NYC in the 80s. His music and influence will live on forever.
Thank you for this very important doc. about Jaco Pastorius. From the time i started to hear "fusion" music a new world appeared to me, and Jaco Pastorius is one of the most relevant builder of this world.
Amazing documentary, sometimes hardly bearable to watch it casts a light on Jaco's life that was at the same time so common and so unique. A genius embodied in the same human envelope we're all been given from scratch.(Well you get my point let's not talk about Jaco's hands) Peter Erskine is giving exceptional insights on what was going on at the time. Tears in my eyes.
Great documentary, one of the few things missing was Pat Metheny and the Bright Size Life period. Long live Jaco, the 1974-1975 period. Would have also loved to hear Mike Stern and the 83 WOM period, but I guess other things took precedent. Thanks for posting.
Yes, and amazing book it is, as I read the first edition in the 1990's. Metheny can be particular. Two giants starting out together at the same time, what a period.
Jazz Music? I managed to immortalize this work of art, I played on the channel and didn't even divulge it, I thought that nobody would be interested in seeing it. I am a bass player and a fan of the work of Jacob. hug. write on the channel
Okay, this is an excellent doc which I'm very grateful for seeing, but it has committed one great travesty - it doesn't include the story of, doesn't even mention, Jaco's work on Pat Methany's Bright Size Life, which was a seminal moment in all of jazz and a major starter of Jaco's career too. Otherwise, a bazillion thank yous.
lion inacoma unfortunately not everything is perfect yet this documentary is a work of art, thanks for commenting and share with your friends a fan of the big brazilian hug.
Interesting parallels between Jaco and Charlie Parker also Vincent Van Gough.....genius pathcutters but the real world was too much for their out of this world vision.... all three died very young...RIP Jaco
Happy to shake his hand when he introduced his name is Jaco i said Jaco pastorius. Hey you know my name i said Birdland. He smiled. Jaco never said any thing to the cab who just refused to pick him up. He told him he is off duty but picked another one when he rode wigh me. Any one in the city(nyc) would curse loudly. But Jaco said he just told me he is off duty. I respected him two wrongs dont make it right. R.I.P.
If. Jaco had stopped the drinking he would be alive today. I. Have the bi polar. Ilness the drinking made. ,the erratic behaviors it's sad I listen. to. threr views of a secret and a jam he did with bireli lagrene Teresa so beautiful I was born 1951 with the funk in my dna I m a drummer Jaco I hope I can jam with you in the next life love you brother John simmons
Is it me or did Joni Mitchell show a lack of compassion in her comments. She was, imo, dismissive of his mental state. Maybe she was just lamenting his behavior. I don’t know
A cab didnt want to pick him up in nyc. He came to me i said come on in. He said do you mind waiting for a second my friend is coming out from the store. He said i am Jaco i responded Jaco pastorius he said you know my name i said Birdland ( incredible bass he played in the song) he smiled. The lady got in i was driving, traffic, we were side by side with another cab. Jaco recognized the caby a white man. Jaco said he just told me he is off duty and he has a fare now. Believe me any and any one in ny would yell and say a nasty word. Jaco didnt say none. I just respected him a lot. I remmeber exactly where i dropped him that evening. 21 st and first ave. Nyc. Did i met mad and crazy guy, i dont think so. As they say in Italian " Non ce fortuna per gli artisti."
Robert Trujillo is a bad bass player, but he plays in a band that became famous for being in the right place at the right time, but thats about it. There is no justification for giving the bass of doom to him.
Please! What is the name of this song that starts playing at 11:05 on this video? I really love this rhythm but I couldn't find anywhere who was the band that played or the song. Thank you from the heart.
It is, Jaco threw the bass after a show and broke it into multiple pieces (especially the headstock). Kevin Kaufman reconstructed it, laying a tiger maple veneer in the body.
Robert Trujillo truly outdid himself with this documentary!!!!
Excelente documentário. Jaco,sempre!!!🎸🎸

I’m a 65 year old guy and I cried. A true tortured Artist. Where was Pat Metheney in this documentary?
Il suo peccato fu capire e superare Joe Zawinul, un bassista

I have a feeling that Metheny didn´t want to participate....he was also very negative about the excellent book Bill Milkowski wrote about Jaco
Yes, and amazing book it is, as I read the first edition in the 1990's. Metheny can be particular. Two giants starting out together at the same time, what a period.

Jaco is astonishing, sad he' was so far ahead of him self feels like he'd done it all
I love the more personal stuff... It would also appeal more to the average person, who might then look at the more musical documentary.
He is the van Goph of Bass Players

3:07 Jaco diz: "Gimme a Gig", que o correto seria traduzir como "dê-me uma apresentação". Gig = show, apresentação, jam e etc.
He needed work.
He is asking for work, at that point Jaco was not playing or being booked by anybody.
It's alright. I mean about that Portuguese translation.

Kkkkkkkkkkkkk 👏👏👏👏👏👏
Nobody gave the bass of doom to him, he bought it.
He found it in a music store in NYC, played it at a couple of concerts and then gave it to Jaco’s family. He’s a good guy

1:47:08 - that isn't Jaco's original 'Bass of Doom' unless they sanded and refinished it.
It is, Jaco threw the bass after a show and broke it into multiple pieces (especially the headstock). Kevin Kaufman reconstructed it, laying a tiger maple veneer in the body.
