I was at that concert! When I went to take a leak after the concert, Jaco was taking one right next to me :-). On the same night, there were Art Blakey and Klaus Doldingers Passport, two days earlier, there were Billy Cobham-George Duke, with the young John Scofield and McLaughlin's Shakti, two days later Stan Getz, Thad Jones and Mel Lewis, the next day Sarah Vaughn. We slept in the courtyard of the Montreux casino. My god, those were the days...

@@allinthemind2006 Yes, I did. And we also talked. My parents, the trumpetplayer Oscar Klein and my mother, jazzsinger Miriam Klein, grew up with Joe Zawinul in Austria. So I told Jaco to tell Joe that I'm here and to let me go backstage to say hello. Jaco answered: «I cannot tell Joe to let you come backstage, but I could certainly ask him.» I got a free english lesson from the amazing Jaco Pastorius :-).

I was thinking the same thing. Except for the word "talent". I was wondering if it would EVER be possible to witness something like this again? Probably not. But, I would be happy to be proven wrong. But, with only 674,000 some views since 2012, what are the chances another group of musicians getting this diverse, creative, and motivated for some serious killer jams still in the vicinity of Jazz.

It was an incarnation of WR I did not like quite as much as this one but if we're just talking about the expression on Zawinul's face, I think there were some moments with Omar Hakkim where he looked a bit happier. There's a Tokyo concert I'm thinking of (avail here on YT) Regardless, I think there's no question he was proud of having the best band in existence.

This was the summer of 76 ,to this day one of the hottest ever in Europe and you can see the sweat dripping off all of these musicians, so I think it’s just physical discomfort.Dripping sweat must be awful for a sax player. Wayne’s concentration levels are incredible, and I think he keeps still and expressionless so that he can deliver to the max.

Forty-three years ago....Jaco stunned The bass community, much like Scott LaFaro did with Bill Evans... NO one played like that before, just a standard vintage Fender Jazz Bass, but with a defretted and coated fingerboard, ans Rotosound stainless round wound strings... the lines, technique, his use of harmonics.... Now, it seems like EVERY new 'bass star' or 'phenom' is just imitating him, and his sound. Bill Milkowski's book on Jaco's life is a great read.

I saw them during the Heavy Weather tour. At the time, I was about 27 and still trying to be the bast bassist I could. That night I heard/saw this punk guy named Jaco. I handed him my hopes for the bass that night. He was doing stuff with that Jazz Bass that no one else was. Within a couple of years, you could not escape his sound on every fusion record there was. I completely agree Dave with your assessment. He did a solo section with an Echoplex and the rig shown that rearranged my world musically, and I had been gigging for a living for 5 years before that.

I love how he altered his Bass to make it play the way he wanted it to play. Try playing a "fretless" Bass like that. No one playing either before or since even comes close to Jaco. @@jackburton6998 Oh yesss ! I will never forget this fraternal encounter! A cosmic "Full 🌕 Connection". We were a good ten aliens, vibrating blissfully four meters from the great Jaco, on this little flying carpet and we sweated abundantly with these genius musicians. What a masterfully filmed ten-fingered solo! I kept this rug preciously. Although it has aged somewhat, it still flies very well. This summer, I used it to spend a few days of family vacation on the planet Gong. And at this moment, as I write these few exciting lines, etc, etc :)

Brent Jackson :His way of landing on the “1” weather it be 4/8, 6/8, 7/8, 9/8....etc is just amazing.....speed never mattered, he always said it was usually just two fingers flicking and raking,.... that’s when you “become” your instrument when you explain it that simply, in my opinion. I’m a funk/Jazz drummer and would give....a lot....to play with that man. The older I get, the more I “hear” in his performances ....for example from 7:55 to 8:13....what a beautiful riff to send you on a “ear learning” tangent....and yes....what an animal....and what an inner animalistic inspiration

@@minorthreat8240 You and I need to jam my friend. I've been searching for many a year for a drummer that loves this type of music and appreciates the genius of Jaco Pastorius III like I do. Truly one of the greatest influences and inspirations of my entire musical journey. I sincerely hope you read this and that you live in the NY area. Get in touch with me. I play guitar and just to give you a brief idea of my style, Hiram Bullock along with Jaco drastically changed the way I play my instrument. Think Live in NYC Vol. 2. This just blows my mind. Sadly i haven't listened enough to Paco nor Weather Report, nor any of the names involved here, until recently... Better late than never, but this is so incredible that I feel embarrassed to not have been listening for decades.
Mind blown that there is SO much clarity to all sounds here, with SO much going on, SO many treats give. Within this set, and done with all this clarity. Everything sounds so dang good. Modern times, alot of this type of stuff doesn't hit me so beautifully, not because of the players now, but, to me, the new ways of recording, producing... The newest mics involved, etc etc... It doesn't bring the music together with such snap all while carrying grace throughout. I miss the sounds of yesteryear. I will be listening to these players for quite a long time from here on out. Also the other projects they have each been part of otherwise.
The drums sound sooooo good. The wind instrument Carry like they are riding on the actually air of the sky. Paco's even included such brutal sounding distortion at the smallest of moments, that add to everything so well. I love all this whole set.
