Jaco and I were childhood friends who played in the band Soul Inc. I played drums. It was my first professional experience in music. We were both 16 at the time and played in a club in Fort Lauderale called Lenny’s that later became the Flying Machine. I remember we played Soul music and the club had a go go dancer. I was paid $150 dollars for a 2 week gig and thought this great, this is the career I want to pursue making that kind of money at my age in 1967. I went to Combs college of music in Germantown near Philadelphia. Oddly enough was a town discovered by his great great grandfather Francis Daniel Pastorius. I worked there with the legendary Kenny Jeremiah formally of the Soul Survivors who passed away from Covid Dec 4 2020. I moved back to Florida in 1975 and was looking for a gig. The first person I looked for was Jaco too see what he was doing. I located him in a warehouse practicing music for his first album. It blew me away. I looked into his eyes to what appeared wide and glaring. I was expecting a big hello like hey old friend. I was told that there was a band called the Angel Brothers playing at the Castsways on Miami Beach looking for a drummer. I got the gig and from there ended up playing with Gwen McCrae who had the hit song Rockin’ Chair and toured with her in support of her single that reached number one. That later turned in to working with KC and the Sunshine band in their studio Sunshine Sound and doing and album “Going Home For Love” with Jimmy Bo Horne. I last saw Jaco shortly before his death in a club at the Holiday Inn in Miami. I was sitting in with Frank Cornelius for the weekend and Jaco just popped in. I looked at him and there again was that wide eyed glare. I always loved Jaco as a musician and wanted to be close with him musically but it never happened, to my disappointment. I will never ever forget the times we shared and his music. RIP my dear friend🙏

No I grew up in chestnut hill five minutes from Germantown. I’m not sure I ever heard of combs music school, I wonder if it became settlement music school. Anyway, interesting story! I have to wonder why you guys never reconnected on a normal personal level. Such is life.
My son Trevor was diagnosed with bipolar disorder at 16. Trevor was a bassist in many bands. Sadly Trevor lost his battle with addiction at 26. My wife and I tried for 8 years to help him and 6 rehabs. We miss you T.J.

Yes Jaco was one of best Im a sound-tech and I don't categorize musicians as being the best because if there's five best bass players I would put him in there but we can't forget Marcus Miller, Ron Carter, Anthony Jackson, Stanley Clarke just to name some of my best choices.
😐. It doesn't even make sense to proclaim someone as the greatest bass player. Who is the greatest sculptor or oil painter? It depends on what you like to look at. Music is art, not competition.

Simply put. Their was Bass before Jaco and Bass after Jaco. He totally changed the game and set a bar so high that no one has come close to touching it. He had everything ,groove , incredible skills, innovation, funky as f@uck and his syncopation and sense of timing....just beyond. To my eternal regret I was booked to have lessons with him in 86 sadly he was in hospital and never made it to the lessons I had booked. My inspiration. A Legend. And he was cool as f#uk. Thank you Thank you Jaco, Ill never stop listening to your playing nor being inspired and amazed by it. RIP. See you on the other side

Paul, I am a relatively new bass player and one of the first songs I learned to play was Smooth Operator. Such a legendary song. Such great bass. Thank you for sharing, you are a legend!
I saw Jaco early July 1987 in Washington Square Park NYC around two months before he passed away. He was homeless and living in the park and was very sick. He was dressed in sneakers, American flag shorts, a headband, no shirt and clutched a basketball. He introduced himself as “Jaco Pastorius the world’s greatest bass player”, inserted a Weather Report “Heavy Weather” cassette tape into a boombox pressed play and mimed playing bass along to “Birdland”. Some guy was annoyed with Jaco’s antics, picked up his basketball and threw it to the other side of the park and Jaco ran after it. That was the last I saw him.
A friend living in NY around the time had befriended him and told me Jaco would routinely whip his bass from one end of the basketball court to the other or slide it from one side to the other on the concrete with no regard to damaging it and sometimes would throw it at my friend and expect him to catch it. Aside from his mental illness, Jaco was a brilliant composer, arranger, pianist and revolutionary bass player. He will never be forgotten.

I met Jaco at a music store in Lauderdale, you are absolutely correct, he was a musician, not just a bass player. Jaco played his newest composition on the piano, he played piano incredible! It was an honor to witness, I will never forget, he was a genius!
I'm a blues guitarist. It's hard to explain to people just how much Jaco means to me. He inspires me on a level that no other musician does.

Loved Jaco, as a working musician/bass player in the ‘70s and 80s i purposely played without effects (esp chorus) to avoid sounding like Jaco whose sound was everywhere, and all his fan-boy

Got to meet Jaco in the most unusual way. I was a clown with Ringling Brothers and Barnum and Bailey's Circus and we were playing Miami in 1982. Jaco snuck in backstage and came and hung out with some of us. He wanted to juggle and do handstands. He only ever said his name was Jaco. He never said that he WAS the Bass Player Jaco. Just Jaco. Never blew his own horn. After him sneaking in a for a couple of days our Performance Director caught wind and banished him from backstage. He may have been on a manic tear but he was pretty adept at circus skills and was a fun cool guy. Really glad I had that bit of time with him.
It breaks my heart when people call it a "prophecy" when it's really clearly a story of a man that had had enough of a tough lot in life and gave up. Much love to those that battle this level of mental health where, even today, finding relief isn't easy. Drugs and alcohol are a common reprise for many dealing with such issues because it makes life a little more tolerable till it no longer does. Much love and respect to Jaco and his family.
Saw Jaco, 🎸 Guitarist Hiram Bullock (David Sanborn) , and a guy who played drums 🥁 and keyboards 🎹 at the same time in a small club, Columbus, Ohio during the 90 s a year before he died. 🙏🏿 ✝️. Influence on my bass playing as well as Stanley Clark!

Jordan, this was a tremendous tribute to a great musician. I saw Jaco when he played with Weather Report (it was at the Edinburgh Playhouse sometime in the early 80's). When he played, something unique happened - you knew you were in the company of someone with an extraordinary gift. He performed a solo and, once he had set up a rhythm with the echo unit, the melodies began - then he launched into 'Third Stone from the Sun'. Unbelievably he finished that solo (as only he could) with 'The Hills are Alive' from The Sound of Music - he then took the bass off and threw it over the back line! He was a complete force of nature - a force of music.
Have read much about Jaco over the years, he had such a troubled life, therefore it was great to see the Memorial Park his community have created. This film is a truly great tribute - Thank you Jordan.
Jaco also had a photographic memory. If there was a Bass chart he'd give it the once over. However, he'd peruse the Piano chart as well, read the lyrics, if any, and read any other sheet music instrumentation to that song because he wanted to know all the parts. One glance at the sheet music is all it took and he could automatically transpose and play the part on his Bass.
I'm a musician in Fort Lauderdale, I met Jaco back in 1986, me and my band were rehearsing at the Musicians Exchange on Sunrise Blvd in one of the studio rooms, a knock on the door, I open the door, and there is Jaco!..I said "I know you" and he introduced himself... we spoke to him for a bit...then he caught a ride....also...we both went to the same High School....Northeast High in Oakland Park,,,he was class of 69 I believe...I'm class of 81.

As a bass player and a life long Jaco fan I have to say this was an excellent tribute to the life of Jaco. Great work Jordan! After watching this I had to plug in my Fender “bass of doom” custom shop to get a good thump session for the man himself. 🙏
I have so many great memories hanging out with Jaco in NYC driving him to gigs in my 69 pontiac Bonn.

I first heard of Jaco when he played on Ian Hunter (Mott the Hoople) 2nd solo album. His playing was so smooth and melodic. I later heard his playing in Weather Report. Tremendous loss.

Mike starr actually passed away a few blocks away from one of my old houses in Salt Lake City Utah. Sugarhouse to be more exact. Sadly it's a common occurrence with a lot of musicians out their.
Well, I saw Jaco playing with Pat Metheny and Mick Goodrick, Bob Moses ( on drums ) up in Boston ( Cambridge/Sommerville line actually ) in 1974, just after he was invited up from Fla, by Pat I believe. No one was really famous yet, so a lot of Berklee students (like myself ) were there for $1.00 cover charge, breathing smoke and staying until 1:00 or 2:00 AM on a school night. Pretty historic really. After Jaco passed, in the late 80's/early 90's, a bass playing friend of mine who had been on the road for more than a decade, managed to buy one of Jaco's basses ( it had a sort of violin scroll at the top of the headstock and was hand- made in Europe ). It was purchased from his father he said out West ( bass guy had lived in Las Vegas and San Diego ) and came with a laminated card signed by Jaco that indicated that it had been declared at a US customs office. I'm an advanced guitar player, not a bassist, and playing bass tears up my nails, so I sold it to someone in Bloomington, IN, who was a guitarist as well, but collected instruments, which I did not. It seemed to have the right provenance as they would say in the antiques business. Just another piece of history for your review. Apparently, Jaco was a person who knew no limits, as far as playing went, but, as they say in psychological circles, knew no boundaries either. He was credited with saying, " If you say that you're the best, and you ARE the best, it's not bragging..." Too bad for his wives and kids though. I'm sure he " smarted off " to the guy that delivered the karate chops.. I heard it was at a liquor store close to closing, but I'm sure I had third or fourth party information. the results are the same. I read a Chinese fortune cookie once that said, " birds are entrapped by their feet, people by their mouths..."
I am a peruvian and an admirer of Alex Acuna, one of the drummers that played in Weather Report. He was always saying that they were really good friends and they were always practicing sports. They used to play tennis, run, etc. He had a really healthy life, until, suddenly he started to change his behaviour, I think pills and drugs... So sad he didn't have the right king of help he needed at that moment.
Tragic story of Jaco. Weather report is brilliant. His time with Joni was brilliant. I hope you are resting in peace where you are Jaco. You have been missed since that fateful night!🙏🏼💔

I have to say a big thanks to you for a great tribute video to the legendary Jaco Pastorius. He died in such a tragic way and way too young.
Second best tenor. Luciano said often "There's Caruso, and then there's the rest of us." Much like Jaco to all bass players-- there was him, and then there's the rest of us.
In 1977-1979, I worked at a record one stop ( warehouse) in Bridgeport, Pa.
Bridgeport is located across the river from Norristown, Pa.
Jaco Patorious' father John, would stop in on occasion and would tell us what Jaco was currently up to.

I saw your Instagram post and was like, “No way!” I knew exactly where this picture was taken. I grew up in South Florida. This Peaches store was super famous. Mötley Crüe posted a picture a few years ago of them signing records at this location. Even as a kid, (I’m now 42) it was the place to be.
I remember being a kid and hearing some of the stories about Jaco you mentioned. My dad was a drummer in the 70’s and 80’s so he was really into the music scene. I wish Jaco had a better ending. Such a talented person. So glad they dedicated that park to him ❤️🎶🙏🏼

My roommate in college was a musician and a big Jaco fan. I got to see Weather Report twice in NYC. Once when they performed at Lincoln Center (1981?) and then again when they performed at the pier in '82. Jaco was with them at that time. So was Wayne Shorter and Joe Zawinul.
Such a good looking talented guy, Jaco. Shortly after his death Rolling Stone or was it Spin had an article about him. I had heard of Weather Report, great underrated band. In the article Jaco had spoken of childhood memories such as "being tired off whipping crosses off of his mother's front lawn" which made me wonder about his mother's background or if it was just a story knowing about his mental health history. Sad he didn't get the help that he needed before it was too late. Thanks Jordan. RIP Jaco ❤️💐🌈🕊️

@@nickmonk7945 I guess what I meant by underated is unheard of by those that don't know that genre of music. Nothing to do with the quality. I first heard of them when I was 14 when the college age brother of some kids that I babysat for was playing one of their albums and I asked "who's that" and he told me. ( This was 1977) Otherwise it might have been years before I ever heard of their music, say via college radio or reading about it in a music magazine.🙂

When I lived in West Palm Beach Florida a buddy of mine, who had been a studio musician for Casey And The Sunshine Band, asked me I I wanted to go to Hollywood Florida and see if we could find Jaco. I said ABOSOLUTLY. Hollywood is a town that is actually between Fort Lauderdale and Miami. Sure enough we saw this guy walking on the street with greasy hair and a bass guitar strapped to his back. It was Jaco. We stopped and asked him if he needed anything like food and he thanked us for asking but he said he was cool. About 5 months later we read in the paper where he had been killed.
that is so tragic. i loved him like that too. i lived right near holiday park where he lived as a homeless man. but i didn't know it. i would have tried to bring him home and help him if i had known.

Thank you Jordan for this beautiful tribute for the greatest bass player who ever lived. He was a genius musician and composer....bass was just like you said, the instrument he happened to end up playing. He was so special and unique in so many ways. Almost like from another planet. He also told Zawinul that he will not live until he is 35...what a burden to live with this premonition. A beautiful quote from Jaco (at the end of Rob Trujillos documentary showing J P park) where he says: "It´s OUR music, none of it´s mine...it´s just coming in and I just want to spread it..." meaning that the music was channeled from higher spheres...not "composed".
Jaco’s story is extremely tragic because it could’ve been prevented. He went from the heights of success and potential to the depths of homelessness and mental illness in just over ten years. Granted he packed alot into that decade but there was potential for so much more. Those around him tried to get him help but something more had to done and it wasn’t. I think what happened to him was that he put more pressure on himself each year to do more than the year before but 😢being a bass player, there’s only so much he could do, so he began incorporating antics into his performances. That pressure along with mental illness and then heavy drug use did him in. I never saw Weather Report but I hear their live shows were amazing. Jaco was well known in southern Florida before his solo album and international fame having learned much from playing with Ira Sullivan
It wasn't drugs or mental illness he was brutally killed by Luc Haven. There's no justification whatsoever for what he did
Great video., thank you! When I first learned about Jaco and started listening to his music and Weather Report, it was "Jaco, this amazing bass player". The more I learned, the more I realize just how little credit I have been giving him. He clearly had an enormous gift when it came to music. Even though there have been many gifted bass players since his passing, I can't think of anyone who was the complete package...who wrote music, who composed, who explored the instrument the way he did.

I followed everything Jaco in the 70's and 80's. He has a nephew David Pastorius that is a fantastic talent, he plays with The Pat Travers Band.
I remember seeing Jaco play at Blues Ally back in the early 80,s he put on a great show. Today I have learned to appreciate his music more than ever. Only one Jaco Pastorius

Felix Pappalardi was a famous bass player from the band Mountain - who also was murdered under disturbing circumstance and would be good subject matter for your vlog

Pappalardi was murdered by his wife, Gail Collins, in 1983, She caught him with another woman and gunned him down. She created Mountain's cover art.

This is fascinating. I grew up on RHCP and PRIMUS. I always heard about Jaco but knew little about him except he is credited with “inventing” the fretless bass guitar. Thanks for this. I feel like I know him even more now.
Jordon, you did an extraordinary job in tribute to one of the all time giants. I commend your effort to do so and the quality of your work. Jaco was a northstar to so many and will continue to be. His impact is incalculable and so wide ranging. Kudos to you for taking the time and having the interest to pay homage to the great John Francis Pastorius III.

I got into Jaco in the mid 90's and I had to trade to acquire many of his concerts on vhs after starting my own jazz collection as a teen. He was not widely known because players such as Jaco are under the umbrella of what is called jazz. Other great players suffer from this lack of mainstream coverage. Jaco was a genius and a great person. I'm glad the internet has grown and people can post most of his videos that were circulating for years. Thanks for posting your video.

As you mentioned, his work with Joni Mitchell and Pat Metheny is legendary. A few times a year I go on YT and watch the concert easily found and watch it. Michael Becker's (sax) face when Jaco does his solo is pretty awesome (look of disgust. But oddly funny).

I love the channel can’t get enough. thank you for connecting the Jaco Pastorius history for me .I just recently purchased a ukulele bass fretless , The warm smooth tones and the fretless action on it. It’s incredible that Jaco was the innovator of that and how that came to be. What incredible talent as well as what an incredible channel something so sad in the end..love that you put such a positve spin on it. PS hope Jah ‘s doing well. Thanks

didn't get to shake his hand but very fortunate to see him play with Weather Report. I was in Joe Zawinul's bar in Vienna Austria in 2004, and had a conversation with him about Jaco. Joe had nothing but nice things to say about him. Im betting he and Joe and Wayne are jammin today,,,RIP

Thanks for visiting some of my old haunts in those parts. I was living there at the time of Jaco, in Wilton Manors. I only played bass in garage bands until I had the chance to play near the Elbow Room in Ft. Lauderdale on the beach. But I was too fascinated watching the crowd so I was never invited back. :( Holy cow. What memories. You're phenominal, Jordan

I'm from that area. Growing up, my older brothers (10 plus years older), and father would always say "If strings are missing from the piano, it was Jaco" As a little kid I never knew what that meant. I started playing guitar in college and it was always great to say I came from the same city as Jaco. Thanks for sharing, all the best

I've heard the news on the radio in 1987 and it was a shock and still is 36 years later. His son Felix Pastorius carry the legacy of his father on the bass in his own way, great player too.
The saddest part in my humble opinion is the lack of recognitions from music establishment to this day (2023). Where are the Jaco Pastorius award baseman of the year, or institute of jazz, or Fender company making bass replica or celebration award each years...WHY NOT ??? Ang give the money's to his family's or mental illness hospitals or drugs rehab program...but at least use your brain to come up with something, THIS is God music, one in a lifetime humain being, thank by the way for having the intelligence to make this video to honor his memory.

I was just in Fort laudardale last November and went to Oakland Park to see the park named after him with the murals! had I known about them, I would go to see his grave and the imprints too.I didn’t know he was homeless in the end of his too short life.
