I was a Bass student at Berklee in '76 when Jaco exploded. It was an incredible time. When Jaco passed, I carried his obit in my wallet for years afterwards. No musician's death had hurt me as much other than John Lennon's. Both of them were a great part of my life at different times, and I still miss them.

@@garykay7418Me too! I saw him on a gorgeous twilight show at the UofF bandshell sitting on the grass, leaning on the pillow on my bike, enjoying a couple of wine coolers. Magic.
I remember telling Jaco how much I admired Pat’s playing on BSL. He smiled, put down his bass, walked to the phone and called Pat in Boston. I loved his vibe, self-effacing, interested in my thoughts. I knew we’d meet, hoped we’d work together. Somehow it didn’t come to pass until Jaco’s funeral that we’d have some time together. It was an unbearably sad day. I remember hours sitting together outdoors, much of it quiet. Pat played magnificently at a tribute the next day. I will never forget the heights to which his playing rose for that performance of love. It was so intense I went home to cry.

Great memories of Jaco, I recall meeting him at the Sea Ranch Lakes Beach Club around 1980 when I was 11. I was down visiting my grandfather who was the Mayor and Jaco was there with some group of friends. My uncle knew him and took me over to say hello. He was very friendly and nice to me and hung out with us for a while. I met him a few years later at Kim’s Alley Bar while I was down for Easter and saw him play piano. I talked to him after and he was clearly not doing well but still very friendly. He remembered my family and asked about them and also asked me who my my favorite band was and I told him Weather Report. He told me it was his also and laughed. Such a talent and good guy. God bless Jaco.

It’s too bad you and others never lifted a finger to help him in 1986 and 1987 while he was alive homeless and living in parks. You and Peter erskine are insufferable. When I was at Berklee in the 90’s we would call Pat’s answering machine in Cambridge to hear a new composition every month.
He actually picked up once when I called. I had no idea what to say lol.

For those watching this interview and never listened "Bright size life": buy the record, this is my only advice.

I can't think of another musician whose music touches my soul quite like Pat Metheny. Soundtrack to my life. I hope I exit this world listening to his music.
The hours spent, imbibing in dubious material and listening to the white album, reveling in the concentric circles, the back and forth, and waves of that music is something I still do nearly fifty years later.
Rick looks like a kid in a sweet shop.
Pat still has insane hair. (In a good way).
Still possibly my favourite guitarist/musician.

I remember Pat’s trio with Jaco and Bob Moses. It was at a 1977 gig at a bar in downtown Hartford, CT called Mad Murphy’s. The sign out front read: Pat Metheny (gtr) Bob Moses (dms) “Jocko” (bass) $3.00. I already knew Pat and Bob’s work with the Gary Burton Quintet (which also included Steve Swallow and Mick Goodrick). I wondered, ‘Who’s Jocko?’ Well, I soon found out! Years later, I would see Jaco again, this time with Weather Report at the Kool Jazz Festival at SPAC. Jaco played a solo of “Purple Haze.” By then, he was a superstar. To think I saw Pat Metheny’s band (as he mentions in Rick’s interview) in a bar for three bucks makes me smile to this day.
Man I would love to know how Jaco sounded live. Was it low end? Mid range/nasal sound? High at volumen? Punchy? Did everything tremble when he played? You would feel the sound in the chest or in the legs? 🤩

Midwestern Night’s Dream is a haunting, fusion-esque masterpiece and Bright Size Life is a seminal work of Jazz and a chronicle of musicians whose potentials where just about to be fully discovered. An absolute classic

So crazy how Jaco just floored everybody. I was at UNL trying to get the upright and music theory together. It was just so utterly shocking that someone would have the audacity plus talent to do that……lol These interviews are pure gold.
I just saw Pat on Sunday in Buenos Aires, for the first time (I started listening to him in 1997) a dream come true. He played for almos 3 hours straight. He played Bright Size Life and Sirabhorn, and many of the Letter From home Album, Secret Story which are some of my favorite tunes which I grew up with. He even played Slip Away which I didn´t expect AT ALL!. He ended the set with Have you heard, which can be found already on this site. I didn´t think there was room to improve for him but I can say that his solo guitar playing has become even better. He really showed us what is it like to be a master of the instrument. The band is really sharp and the dynamics that were displayed really had us on the edge of our seat. It was one of the best days in my life (I was far but I did the Beato thing and recorded the audio of the concert, just for me, I won´t upload it, I guess...)

Pat Metheny - Bright Size Life was an amazing album that really helped set the tone for what the future was going to be like and a big part of that was the bass playing of Jaco Pastorius which i still say to this was his best work ever. Those two along with drummer Bob Moses were a tight trio and they sounded tremendous. Great insight into one of the most important debut recordings of all time
If you haven't listened to the outro on Midwestern Night's Dream, please do. Jaco is just magical on that

I met Pat, Mark, Danny and Lyle backstage at a gig in Illinois in 1982. Our band covered some of his tracks, so it was a thrill. Great guy, amazing player...

Midwestern Night's Dream was the one track that got me into ECM records in the 70's. I had bought Bright Size Life because I liked the image on the cover.

A mate back around circa '78 played me the "white" album ; man that just blew me away at the time, had never heard anything like it especially San Lorenzo track. That was that, I was a confirmed jazz fanatic after that. Some 43 years on and have followed Pat and Lyle all this time through all the different phases. I sure do miss Lyle, he was the Rachmaninoff of modern Jazz.
On a personal note for me the early PMG stuff was the best. Thanks for a life of music Pat 👍 from UK.

White Album blew my mind when I played in lab band in 1981/82. Tried to learn phase dance - writing out the ledger lines to notes
Bright Size Life was maybe the 2nd ECM record I bought, after a Keith Jarrett - Jan Garbarek LP. I ended up with over 200 ECM records 5 years later, most great, few as great as Bright Size Life.
Pat is my biggest music hero, not only because I'm a guitarist (or pretend to be), but because his incredible creativity and musicianship. Pat and Jaco together made such an incredible music, Bright Size Life is just shocking beautiful and interesting
I just saw Pat on the Dream Box Trio tour, at the Beacon in NYC, late June. It's been many, many years since I last saw him. It was an incredible show, from the first note to the last, no set break.
You can still hear Jaco's strong influence on Pat's playing & composition, almost half a century after they first played together.

The Einstein of the guitar! I Love "Bright size life" It's one of my all time favorites. I can't believe that Pat did not like it the first couple of years.
Blows my mind that the thought at first that it wasn't a good record. It is a GIANT masterpiece. Hands down my all time favorite PM album. His compositions were totally unique - like a whole new sub-genre of jazz, opening a new door for jazz guitar. And his tone, oh my. That's when I first started my life-long journey of focus on and seeking better tone.
His composing skills are even more mind blowing than his insane guitar abilities

I love this album, although I got it pretty late. I had listened to Wayne Shorter and Weather Report since 1981, but in 1987, this album also led me to discover Pat and Lyle's wonderful world.
Loved Jaco, saw him once with PMG and Joni Mitchell. Need to listen to Bright Size Life 10 times now.
Pat might be the best interview in all of music.

Pat just gets better with age. I can't think of many guitarists that are as versatile and as imaginative as Metheny. The Side Eye Band live? Lucky guy!
When I was 15 I went to see Pat at Ravinia, a very nice outdoor theatre in Chicago area. It was 1982. Somehow I thought Jaco was still in the group, but Mark Egan was in the spot. However it was that I had this confusion, I remember looking at the bass player and determining that it was not Jaco. But man, the band took off and it was a beautiful thing.
This is funny because "Bright Size Life "is my favorite Par Metheny record from the opening riff it still sounds so vibrant and fresh😎😎😊😊

I've crewed for Pat and I met Jaco. I've crewed for Rock Superstars and Jazz Icons. None were nicer than Pat. Unfortunately, the day I met Jaco was not his best. The demons had him that day. Thanks.
I had Bright Sized Life when it came out. It was wonderful and I'm surprised to hear it didn't make Pat rich! I had no clue... ECM was the big time to me. I also was taking Lessons at the time with Bill Connors just before that so his ECM record Theme to the Guardian also deeply influenced me. I wish PAt had talked about playing with Joni Mitchell; her Hissing album was so great!
That's cool , I had a friend who turned me on to Metheny with the Gary Burton quintet and I bought Bright size Life when it came out also . Then my friend ended up taking guitar lessons in Boston from Mick Goodrick before going to university of Miami . We jammed a lot and I learned a lot .Matheny has been a major influence on me !

it wasn't until after i graduated high school (briefly there) that i learned pat metheny went to the same school, a couple years ahead of me and not on my radar, i was into rock, but would later go to an outdoor blues/jazz concert in kansas city, saw both pat metheny and bb king. never forget it.
I got to see Pat with Jaco and Joni in 79 when l dropped out of high school and moved to LA w/ the band. Then Pat w/ Jaco and in between l believe one of the best shows ever with Weather Report in Dallas outside in the summer at a venue l cant remember the name of but it started storming but not raining with lightning and thunder during their set. It was magic. Shorter was jamming. Ive seen Pat 20+ times though. RIP lyle.

According to the book, Bob Moses commented Pat was was very doubtful to have Jaco on the recording. After all, it was his first recording in a household label, and he was leaning towards having a recognized, bass player. Moses was the one who convinced him to have Jaco on it, Pat last comment about the recording being a tenth of a live show matches what Moses said in the book.

The first time I spun BSL in 1981, or so... it had fallen into my lap... I wasn't looking for it, I was unaffected. I was completely unable to understand what was going on... it seemed chaotic. I'm not that savvy, but I thought, there might be something here. I had heard of Jaco, but not Pat... after about the 100th time listening, I started to hear the genius and interplay between 3 geniuses. I've listened to it hundreds of times since then, and every time it seems fresh. What occurred to me, is that it took me a long time to understand... but they did it live, interacting with each other, at a very young age: that blows me away. It was so loose and tight at the same time. Who can do that? Even now.
I was acquainted with Jaco for a time in the 80s. Even though we were never close, and I couldn't justifiably call him a friend, I knew him as a very likeable and down to earth guy. Now, in those days, everyone had a "Jaco Story," but I have a different one.
One day he and I were drinking in a bar, talking about music. Suddenly, out of nowhere, he said, "I want to stop drinking and taking drugs, but I don't know how." It sounded like a cry for help. Imagine how I felt! I had no idea what to say because at the time I had the same problem (I been clean since 1988). Two years later, he was gone.
Congratulations that you cleaned up. Tragic that Jaco didn't (though maybe he had other mental health issues too). What an incredible gift he had.

While back in my home state of Florida this week, got the chance to see Pat Metheny at the Lyric Theatre in Stuart, FL. Your interview inspired my interest in Pat's music. He is a treasure. He played withJames Francies and Joe Dyson. Lots of big jazz people in the audience. Thank you for exposing this beautiful art form to me. Best Wishes. Michael

It is vivid music history.
I met Jaco once in Greenwich Village with my best friend & bandmate but it was the later Jaco, the other Jaco like Pat said. After a lifetime of studying classical piano I was 6 months into jazz piano lessons and all I wanted to do was talk music with him. But all he wanted to do was kick our asses at basketball. He had that crazy taped up guitar and was AMPED to the gills. I was 20, confused and so disappointed. We heard he died a few months later.

That record has such a unique sound. It's one of those jazz records that isn't just jazz, but like, its own thing. and it's cool to hear Pat so young and a little loose.
Pat, you have no idea how lucky you ar to know Jaco, to be friend and his bandmate ...no doubt that you are one of the best, but Jaco was way more than just a great Jazz Cat...he shines Angelic Energy when he plays and even when he talks...so sad that he's not around...really sad.

Hi Rick, I am your Italian follower and I really appreciate your channel. I share most of your musical opinions and I find a lot of ideas to listen to a lot of music with a different spirit. I am also a jazz guitarist (jazz fusion to be precise) and I really appreciated your interview with Pat Metheny! Even if I agree that most of the shredders nowadays leave their time to find, I would like to suggest you to listen to an Italian guy: Matteo Mancuso who, according to famous guitarists like Al Di Meola or Steve Vai, is taking the guitar to a higher level. I think he deserves a few minutes of your time and I would like to know what you think about him.

Funny story if you have a minute.
We saw Patrick in Milwaukee last Thursday, Oct 5th. He was fantastic and did a lot of talking. Before the show, I walked up to buy a t-shirt and an old friend whom was also a musician and who's daughter I'd coached in baseball 14yrs ago was behind the counter. I'd not seen him since my last PM concert 5 yrs ago. I asked him if he knew who Steve Hackett was who we are seeing next month in Milwaukee. He said no but the 30 something tall young man also selling t-shirts , introduced as Jeff, said Steve came to Pat's show in NY and he ended up backstage with both of them. He said he couldn't go see Steve in Nov either cuz he was traveling with Pat's tour. During the concert, Pat played "Song for the boys", which he composed to tire out his 3 and 5 yr old boys before bedtime and revealed that the 3 yr old was selling t-shirts in the lobby! After the show when I said bye to my friend, I looked at Jeff, who was swarmed by patrons and said, "No wonder you're not going to see Steve Hackett!" I'll never forget him smiling back at this fan of his dad's for almost 50 yrs!
That record is great. I first heard it in '78 and thought it was George Benson playing!

I took my oldest son to see Pat Metheny at UCLA’s Royce Hall. He’s my all time favorite musician ~
Its amazing to me that this album was recorded in 1-2 days with each track only having a couple of takes when this album for me is as good as an American jazz classic record as it can get! the guitar/bass/drums are all otherworldly and sound like they were finely crafted for weeks on end to get the interplay, it was just them "jamming"....mindblowing!

I just listened to it after watching another interview with jaco about it. I have to say, it is really good. Not the pat Matheny I thoroughly dislike during the mid 80 thru the 90's and probably to present, and certainly not as good as any of steve tibbetts music. Jmo

I find it remarkable that a guitar player remembers the bassplayers (even it was Jaco) amplifier (acoustic 360) literally 45 years after the record was made, even though it is no longer even made
That was THE bass amp at the time. Only slightly smaller than a refrigerator, but you had to have it.
