He was an artist, pure and simple.
At 0:24 when he's talking about his steel drum band and the record he's trying to put out, he's talking about the ill-fated Holiday for Pans record, which still has never been officially released to this day.
It was Birdland for me.
His speed on the neck was insane. He was the best bassist that played outside the box. His tone, a slightly deadened tone due to frets physically removed and replaced with epoxy, was amazing and ridiculously unique. He is missed very much by every bassist I know. Thanks for this very cool video as I never heard him speak before with a wee little southern drawl sneakin in....
My god it's good to see him so "clean" and coherent. So many videos of him around that time are when he was having a real tough time. This is a gem.
Mad genius. He and Larry Graham changed the game for today's players.

@@Groovemyster Most of the interviews I've seen from people who grew up with him painted him as very sure of himself, almost arrogant, but also a kind soul. He was very outgoing and friendly. I guess you can be a friendly person but still be full of yourself! But yeah, later in life his behavior become more erratic. It is depressing to think someone could rise to such heights but then fall to such a low.
Such a humble wonderful man.
Well he had a massivd ego but he had a humble heart dewɛ inside. Amazing MUSICIAN!

I don't know if anybody else can tell.... but Jaco was kept in an even manageable mindset by mood stabilizers at this time.....just to keep him from flipping out.......which he had done.... the night he died in Florida off his meds......his death was preventable....if somebody was made aware......Jaco being alone and off his meds ...he was his own worst enemy. We all miss him very much!

@@kajem575 Yep, it was definite manslaughter I would say. But I think Jaco was also undone by changes in the music business - the eighties offered less space for the kind of extended, open-ended jazz/funk jamming he naturally belonged within. It seems odd now that the Word of Mouth album was seen as such a difficult and hard-to-sell record that it contributed to him losing his recording contract, but clearly it did.
Jaco was not only the greatest bass player and generally an excellent musician and great person!
He was also a victim of the greatest tragedy in music history: completely impoverished, without a permanent home, he lived in public parks for a long time!
Nobody cared about him! all colleagues whom he helped to achieve world fame (Wheater Report would never have become so famous without him, he was the real star) and many others had "forgotten" him and he was beaten so badly by a bouncer that he died as a result!

I have it too and recently heard that Jaco was said to have had it. And now I have proof of it.

Early on I thought of Jaco as just an amazing bass player, but the more I learned about him the more I appreciated what he did for bass playing and jazz in general. Wayne Shorter made a comment about how Jaco could have released some pop albums and made a bunch of money, but he preferred to work on the kind of music that interested him and really pushed the boundaries of jazz. He wasn't interested in selling out, even if it could have been easy money.
I understand that even though he was basically homeless at the end of his life, his wife Ingrid was able to work with a lawyer to ensure his estate received royalties on all his music so at least his family was financially taken care of after his passing.
Is that frank gambale way back when.
