That started to change when GM decided to remove (slowly over time) the freedom of its brands to design and build their own vehicles to cut cost (IIRC that was in 1963 or there about). By 1971 for example all transmissions were a 'corporate' design th350,th400, etc. Full sized cars across all brands also used Oldsmobile rear ends where previously they had their own rear ends, etc. That use of corporate parts and corporate engineering across all brands is what led to the watering down of brand identity and eventual demise of Pontiac, Olds, and Buicks unknown identity today. Think early 2000s a Pontiac could be bought with the same drivetrain as a Chevy or Buick. GM is responsible for Buicks image problems because of that imo

Yeah when he said that I was like “uhhhh no”. I mean we would like that because of course we would we’re car enthusiasts. But the sea of crossovers has better money potential than tapping into what is currently a dying market. Don’t get me wrong, a sports car would do great to improve Buick’s image and perception in the US. But that alone is not going to change anything as far as Buick’s sales in the US.
Now what I would do is axe all the Buick sedans (which has already been done). Redesign all the crossovers for the next generation and make them EV only. A sports car would help Buick with their image as well so I’d also introduce one. But it must also be an EV only and in its inception must not cost more than the Camaro.

@@a_cook 1. Buick needs to remain in the USA in order to maintain the brand's foreign luxury image in China. It wouldn't be a desirable American brand anymore if they aren't even available in America (regardless of their status back home).
      2. Prior to the 2008 financial crisis, Buicks were paired alongside GMC and Pontiac at dealers. The US government demanded that GM cut out brands; the General wanted to save GMC as it was super profitable (luxury Chevy trucks and SUV's), but it could not be sold alone. Either Pontiac or Buick had to stay. Buick was saved by offering a better and more profitable Aztek (the Buick Rendezvous), as well as having a clear and stable customer base at the time; old people. Pontiac did not have a clear customer base (on top of having in-house competition with Chevy), and according to Bob Lutz, hadn't been making ANY money over its last 12 years of existence. Lutz's plan to turn it into the "American BMW" was a huge and expensive risk that couldn't come into fruition before 2008.
At the time, the US Congress wanted to kill off all GM brands, except Chevy and Cadillac. By saving Buick, GM was not only protecting Buick's brand image in China, but also saving the highly popular and profitable GMC in America.

I’m an Australian living in Singapore, and I love my Holden Commodore, but I couldn’t get it here. But then in 2017, GM stopped manufacturing Holdens in Australia. Thus, the last model Commodore (ZB) of 2017-2020 was a rebadged German built Opel Insignia B, which in China is sold as the Buick Regal - and GM does sell Opel in Singapore. When GM killed Holden completely in 2020 it was my last last chance to own a brand new Holden Commodore. The problem is that GM can't sell 2 high quality car brands. They'll eat into each other's profits and won't have a good identity. What they should do is do what VW does. They own Audi and Porsche. Both are considered luxury cars in the US (Audi can be regular economy cars in Europe) but Porsche has lots of racing inspired/sports cars that are also luxurious luxurious. I think that's what they should do with Buick and Cadillac. Buick will be GM's Audi and Cadillac GM's Porsche

I think what he meant was Buick was the first to make a automatic transmission with a torque converter. The Buick dynaflow wasn't released for production cars until 1949 iirc. It was designed during WWII for tanks and the hydromatic predates the dynaflow by several years at least. At that time the dynaflow was released in production cars you had to pop the 3rd pedal or let off the gas for the transmission to shift because other automatics didn't have a torque converter. Ironically in the early 60s GM bought out the hydromatic company that made the hydromatic transmission and created arguably the most famous and populous automatic transmission in history (the th350 and th400) by combining engineering of the hydromatic and Buick dynaflow (and a modern version of the th400 is still made to this day). Im more shocked he didn't mention that Buick was directly responsible for the creation of GM and Chrysler as well as inventing things from OHV (pushrod) drivetrains, turn signals, etc.

There is no reason that Buick’s leadership didn’t keep the Lexus brand square in their sights and keep up. Now, Lexus and Toyota make arguably the best vehicles available maintaining brand loyalty and gaining a reputation for both luxury and reliability while Buick is on life-support here with generic crossovers that seem ok on paper until the name is realized to still be related to being old and stodgy (whether true/warranted or not).

Buick is legendary and one of my favorite car brands. They built Indy car engines and raced in nascar in the 90s. I had a 90s riviera with a supercharger in high school and I pushed that thing to its limits in every direction. It was so rugged and dependable and good in the Montana cold and snow that I bought one as a winter beater 10 years later. I get that it was a "grandpa car", but whenever I saw another younger person driving a LeSabre we were always stoked on seeing each other. Now older generations like crossover SUVs. So that's what they make. Do I get it? Sure. But I wish GM would reinvision Buick so that it made cars that were exciting and reliable. I always saw Buick as an affordable luxury brand. But that is what they have been trying to get away from. GM stuck them as the affordable Caddy, which make a lot of old people buy them. Giving them the "old person car" stigma they were trying to get rid of when they brought the Regal back. I personally loved the last generations of Regals and was so exited to see the TourX. Sadly the TourX didn't come with the V6 even though it was heavier. They could have at least made a GS version of the TourX with the V6. If their prices ever drop into the 5k-10k range I will probably buy one and stick a V6 in it. Maybe the LF4 TT V6 from the Caddy mid sized V cars.

The most reliable car I've ever owned was a 2001 Buick LeSabre. I bought it with 23,000 miles on it for less that $10k. It was my first "nice" car. Yeah, it was a "grandpa" car, but it was big, comfortable, and it knocked down 27mpg on average running back and forth to work and even managed 30mpg during long road trips. I sold it to a coworker and it's getting close to 300,000 miles on it's original engine and transmission. It was one of only two cars that I've personally put 100,000 miles on. I currently have a 1996 Roadmaster wagon with the de-tuned version of the LT1 V8 and the car is a riot to drive. It makes wonderful V8 noises when I jump on it and my 4 year old daughter loves riding around in it and looking out the skylight over the back seat. I'd love for Buick to make some more original vehicles. They were getting there with the final generation LaCrosse, I thought it was a great looking car. Being a wagon fan, I also liked the idea and looks of the Regal TourX, but the car itself was a little lackluster and they axed it pretty fast in favor of selling bland crossovers. My whole driveway is a collection of older vehicles because I just have no interest in "cute utes", and my wife and I are in the exact age range automakers are trying to target for new car sales. Neither of us want a crossover, nor do many of our friends and relatives, which makes it a mystery why automakers are ditching cars altogether in favor of crossovers.

I’m still dumbfounded GM didn’t keep Pontiac and use them as a performance brand.
I felt like they should have brought Holden cars like the Commodore, Caprice and Ute. This would have kept them in the performance market instead of Dodge taking their spot.
With both the Commodore and Caprice being V8, rear wheel drive alternatives to the front wheel drive Malibu and Impala, this would easily keep GM in the fight between the Charger and Challenger.
I mean Pontiac even made that Ute G8 that they showed off at an auto show. It would have been perfect. You have your cheap brand, Chevy, your performance brand at a higher price, Pontiac, your utility brand in GMC and the luxury brands in Buick and Cadillac.

It’s just kinda disappointing. But GM had pretty much been going down since the 80s anyway. Replacing rear wheel platforms like the G body (The Monte, Grand National, Etc. ) with front wheel drive crap like the Lumina.
They cheeped out on parts or made poor design choices like the Opti-Spark distributor and the weak timing belts instead of timing chains on the front wheel drive cars.
They canned the Camaro and Firebird, leaving only the Corvette. And when they did try to bring over a Holden like the GTO and the G8, they didn’t give much support and let them die.
Idk I used to be a big GM guy. But when they started outsourcing everything and being cheap, they lost me. Stopped making what I liked and instead made front wheel drive mediocrity that would go bad in 8 years. I have an 02 Tahoe and it’s almost at 300,000 miles. Still works great. Three words: Buick Avenir Concept.
It was a concept car that had Buick gone through with making, using the Camaro alpha chassis and putting an LS in, would've been an absolute success. It looked good, would review well like the Camaro, and would've appealed to younger buyers.
I'll give the business case, it would be a Premium version of the Camaro. Not a luxury sports coupe like the ATS Coupe (discontinued) or luxury sports sedan like the CT4, CT5, and now discontinued CT6. Think about it, if you want a Camaro/Mustang but with a nicer interior the cheapest options (Audi A5, Lexus RC, BMW 4-series) are far far more expensive luxury cars.
A Buick version of the Camaro would be in a class of its own, and why I think this would work where the ATS Coupe didn't is for two reasons:
    1. Buick interiors are arguably better than their Cadillac equivalents, with better build quality and less gaudy designs.
    2. The ATS never came with an LS, it only offered small and medium displacement engines, trying to compete with European sports sedans instead of big V8 coupes like the wildly successful Dodge Challenger.

I recently purchased an LA1, which is just the final iteration of the 60 degree 3.4l. I was planning on installing a rocker/roller kit, little thumper cam, larger cast intake manifold, LS1 throttle body, high comp pistons, ect. I found 1 supplier that still makes all of these parts and honestly, I'd get more power for less money just swapping in an LS4 which was designed to be used on the 4T65E-HD in the 9th gen Impala SS, which means the entire swap (minus electronics) is one evening in the shop. At the end of the day, you already have an amazing RWD chassis, the options are near-endless for what you can toss in that thing. If you want to be different and use a V6, you can get a wrecked fifth-gen Camaro with the LFX 3.6 and be at 323hp right there, then skys the limit as support for that engine is growing every year. Camaro5 forums have good write ups on the whole process as well as user experiences with different kits.

Forgot to differentiate there, the mention of the LS4 was strictly in example to my specific situation with my U-body chassis. The LS4 is a transverse mount engine only. It serves as an example none the less on how easy GM made it to cross platforms.

Buicks are *technically* popular in Europe as well...
They are mostly rebadged Opels/Vauxhalls, and Opel/Vauxhall does very well in Europe...
So yeah, if Buick was introduced as a luxury version of an Opel (or the other way around), it would most likely do well in Europe, the same way as Lexus and Toyota or Infiniti and Nissan do.

No reason they couldn't make an electric sportscar. What if they kept the Camaro as the classic 'Murican big V8 muscle car, but introduced a new Grand National as an absurdly overpowered luxury electric sedan, sort of in league with the Tesla Model S P100D. That might be a good direction to take the brand in, aim at Tesla's market, and move Cadillac back into the super fancy luxury brand it once was.
