  • The only way to truly appreciate an artist is to listen to all their music, not just one song, so we came up with our "5 By" series where David checks out 5 songs by an artist.
The next artist of our "5 By" series is System Of A Down. On this episode of Cleaning Out The Shed, we go back to 2001. Check out David’s reaction to System Of A Down's "Chop Suey!".

Where you ask if there’s a middle eastern influence, they’re Armenian.
Lots of their songs are about genocide, wars, political and socioeconomic strife taking place in their home country.
BYOB, Tentative, Prison Song, and Soldier Side are good examples of this.

Serj's vocals are so fun and relatively 'easy' to sing along. Even if you can't hit the higher register of Serj, you can easily sing the harmonies Daron sings as they are much easier. It's no secret that this song had a overwhelming appeal to alot of folks.

Wasn't it Rick Rubin telling Serj to flip to a random page, from a random book in Rick's library. Since couldn't figure out what lyrics to put in that part, Rick told him to read the first sentence that he sees. And this so happened to be that. I remember the story was pretty much like that, because I was always curious of what the book was. lol

Really happy how you started to play that Piano chord progression thing after you heard it in the song. Chop Suey wouldn't be what it is without that amazing Piano part that Serj played at the end. Yes they have a lot of Middle Eastern influence as you can hear in literally every song. You can especially hear it in songs like Science or Bubbles, you can check these out in your private time, but literally every song has Middle Eastern influence. A lot of their songs are in C minor because they tune their guitars to drop C. Also of note in this song is the bass doesn't play the root notes of what Daron's parts imply which leads to a cool inverted chord in the progression.

Being someone who's listened to them and other artists in this space for 20 odd years I suppose it's really this sense of real fulfillment and gratitude of 'oh, someone who really understands music sees the value they brought to culture and music and the industry, even if it's 20 years overdue.' Man, what a timeless anthem! One of the songs of the century hands down and not only in the metal genre. To this day, everytime this comes at a bar or party it´s all throats full throtlle singing along, even people that are not into metal and people that got into metal because of it. It is their most known song, one of their best and a song that really showcases what they are and do. I got shivers and I heard this millions of times!
Great ride it was this 5 by, you definitely touched on 5 defining songs of their career, especially these last three from the Toxicity album.
When you want you can do a 5 by of the wacky/comic/schizo side of them, it´s a vibe. Songs like Bounce, BYOB, Viscinity of Obscenity or Pictures are some great ones. Again, great ride man, cheers.

I think it was Daron that said in an interview that he grew up listening to middle eastern music, so that influence comes naturally when he is writing a song.

S.O.A.D is one of the best rock bands of the past 30 years and IMO all time. God damn. I want someone to play piano on top of songs like that. They already have a nice hidden melodies in the background in many of their songs but I want someone to bring them forth.

i remember the first time i heard this song. the exact moment and where i was. thats how instrumental they were/have been in my life.
i realize this is from 2021, but i have to mention steal this album. in a career/discography spanning multiple absolute masterpieces... steal this album, to me, is their best work. It was a demo of cut songs that didnt make toxicity, and other random tracks, that someone leaked, shortly after toxicity came out. So they got out in front of it, printed it on a black white cd with an empty jewel case and labeled it steal this album.. to this day, it is still the best encapsulation of their musical genius they have ever put out.
the whole album is start to finish material. but tracks of notice:
    ego brain
    mr.jack
    ieaiaio
    highway song

Hearing your little scatting near the end really makes me want you to do a video on Blues Traveler's Hook, which I am POSITIVE you must know super well so it wouldn't be a COTS or anything, but just you showing off how amazing that song is would be super fun.

There was once between sets of a band at a concert, the sound guys played this song and the crowd went wild like SOAD was playing live. That was one of the coolest displays of how much their fans love their songs in my opinion. Usually they'll play the music quietly, but they put it on full blast and it was great.

It's very pity you checked only these 5 videos by them, all of them from the same era, the era of the debut album and toxicity...their further creation is different in a way and deeper, like BYOB and Question! However, good reaction as always

Hey man! I just Forrest Gumped my way into your channel, purely to do research for the album I'm putting together. Instant fan! I've seen a few videos and you're a true and brilliant musician with an amazing ear. This was a very happy accident. Well done good sir.👍

You in your piano zone always reminds me of the main character from the Disney movie 'Soul' 😂 If you havent seen it yet, i highly recommend you to do so, you would love it.

Very cool to hear your piano freestyles to their tunes, SOAD translates to the piano in a very haunting way.
