- The only way to truly appreciate an artist is to listen to all their music, not just one song, so we came up with our "5 By" series where David checks out 5 songs by an artist.
The next artist of our "5 By" series is System Of A Down. On this episode of Cleaning Out The Shed, we go back to 2001. Check out David’s reaction to System Of A Down's "Toxicity".

Next 3 should be:
Chop Suey
Aerials
BYOB
TRUST ME .....
He's done 3 (Sugar, Spiders, and now Toxicity), so I think it has to be Chop Suey! and BYOB
BYOB is a must yeah. I'd love the prison song too, but thats a much less known song than aerials
Chop Suey!
BYOB
Prison Song
Needles
Deer Dance
There are too many!
Everyone forgets Lonely Day
@@KillTheCrownSTW I don't, but when you can only pick 5 and already picked 3, it's a hard sell. I'd love to see it, Questions!, Deer Dance, Hypnotize and a few others.
After the first record, Serj went from crazy front man to passionate singer.
You're implying that he's not still crazy.
@@lashedsuns4529 he’s wise as fuck now is what he is, I guess that can be interpreted as crazy tho? lmao
He has such a beautiful voice
I dont know why everyone is sleeping on "Question!"
Their Best song imo
especially considering that Shavo (bassist) is the director of this video. Great video, great song
That as good question
I've always said that! My favourite too
Suggestions is often overlooked as well
@@teamfingahs4907 all the self-titled
I love your little improv moments. The brief bits you’ve done in C minor in the last couple videos are gorgeous
"These guys must be great live"
Yep, best show of my life!
Sucks that Serj’s voice just isnt what it used to be live. Back in the day, he was one of the best live vocalists
@@americanmetalhead7318 and they need a second guitarist imo. Unless you have Jimmy Page in your band everybody sounds better live with two
System of a Down - Chop Suey! PLEASE
Something about Serj’s voice is phenomenal to me
3:20 surprisingly his talking voice is VERY soft. But I get what you mean, what Serj is doing is adding grit and force to his talking voice and thats what makes it sound like it, thats the thing that you like, and I like it too. What I think is sad is that nowadays Serj doesn't add that grit and force to his voice since he struggles doing it. I think he needs to get some Vocal lessons.
Just want to say this. I'm a quiet subscriber. Don't comment much on youtube but I gotta say your appreciation for music in general shows so much in all your videos. I love just watching and learning little bits from your commentary. Keep it up man. The genuine positivity is so needed these days.
That made my day Ryan!
Your piano playing of that riff gave me chills.
I love when Serj trails off the note, at the end of the first "disorder" section, into hums,
I really hope you did Question for this series. I look forward to seeing the other two you did!!
Please do 5 by Muse! I promise you’ll love them
I second this! We PROMISE, David!
I'm 35 i got this CD when I was 19 so epic got to see them live
This is what I’ve been waiting for thanks David
The insight. The drawing out of the underlying melody. The thought process to draw out how music is music.. frankly… spectacular.
You sir have a new subscriber…
I love your SOAD reactions. Your insight is very important.
Deep down, all I ever really want for this song is for people to hear "eating seeds as a pastime activity."
It sounds so beautiful on the piano
Have to end the marathon with "Chop Suey". Arguably the most iconic rock song of the time.
SOAD is their own genre
Love your reactions and commentaries!
SOAD definitely have a distinctive sound. As another commenter suggested, doing 5 by Muse would be the dream. You'd have a full back catalogue to choose from! Another great upload guys, enjoyed this one.
I hope one of the last two is Chop Suey!
Starset - Bringing It Down
Love how you can just listen to a song and be able to do that on a keyboard it sounds so cool its a fantastic song
They were my first concert back when I was in middle school. One of the best concert experiences ever.
Great video Teach! Thanks
I'm new to your channel but loved this reaction! Great stuff. I will literally watch every single SOAD video you do.
The way you play just by ear is mind blowing 🤯 to me hahha, awesome video man.. i enjoyed watching it
Definitely listen to “Question!” :)
Love the video man!, by far one of my favourite song by system has to be their old ones like soil or darts, keep up the good work!
Love that you're checking out system
Daron sounds more like dare in THANKS David loving your stuff since seeing your The Kill reaction and the keyboard things you do are absolutely fantastic thanks again
Darin DePaul is a good example, you say their names the same (to my ears)
I've been waiting for this for so long! You should listen to Aerials as well, pretty amazing songs!
SOAD was such a big part of my childhood and one of my first metal loves. Your 5 BY series really brings back memories and I love your piano breakdowns!
Thank you for teaching theory!
I've been a fan since 7th grade (2001). I knew this band just had so much value even then. They're brilliant. Just found your channel today. Love when you play along!
it surprises me how you haven’t heard most of these songs like HOW
love you btw
I love this band so much, they literally were the music i played non stop on guitar and i learned so much of their music while learning guitar. I would play their entire albums or a live show just so i could gain endurance and stamina in my fingers and hand muscles lol. Love these reactions they are so genuine and amazing to hear from a music teacher your own thoughts and feelings. Glad you're falling in love with them. I agree that their music definitely takes you on a journey. A wild one at that haha. The lyrics are a whole nother journey :P Thanks for the content
Oh also their live shows are amazing, some might even say they sound better than the studio recordings. Should definitely check out their older live shows. =]
Love the reaction! Hard to believe that you haven't heard this song as a drummer. Keep up the good work! 🙂
this is easily the best song ever written imo
I have seen these guys live, and yes, it was amazing!
LEGEND💜💜💜
Awesome banger! This song is such a vibe, love the drumming. This whole album is their masterpiece. Saw them twice live, epic!! Also loved your little touches joining the melody on the piano, it gave the song....some finesse maybe :)
Been here since 5k and am so happy to see you come so far!! You have just that star quality for noting the things that many people wouldn’t musically. Impressed as always have An amazing week:)
Thank you my brother!
This makes me want to see you react to Faith No More. The Real Thing, Land of Sunshine, Everything’s Ruined and Stripsearch are good places to start. It’s amazing how many bands Faith No More has influenced. Great work!
I see that you are going down the rabbit hole, good luck man
Thank you!!!
Great reaction
I'm so happy you found a love for this band I loved them from their 1st album! 20 years and going strong they never get old \m/ best road trip music on this planet
Yeah. Like seeing you rock out bro!
"These guys must be so much fun to see live"
I literally thought I was going to die in the pit when I saw them, and I was totally fine with it.
I’m glad you’re still here
I commented on your Sugar reaction about seeing them live. This song was honestly about the pinnacle of that experience!
I have seen footage of one of their concerts with 5 mosh puts going on throughout the crowd, i can only imagine.
I love it, the whole album was a lot more widespread than their previous ones, certainly in the UK.
I love piano covers of their tracks and your videos have great breakdowns in.
Maybe I should start learning the piano.
I've seen some videos of their live concerts and you are absolutely right. They are fun to watch😂
Serj and Daron's vocals are incredible and they sound so good together!
Holy mountains, Aerials, Question, ATWA, Streamilne, B.Y.O.B. and *Protect the land* (released in 2020) are all great songs imo! It's worth checking them out- if not in reaction videos, then at least in your free time! :)
Also I think it's awesome how you've managed to sing along with them so quickly!
This was my middle school days. I remember my mom buying this album for me because it had the "parental advisory" on it. Dang, bringing back memories. But also, you should do more Sleep Token. Or Of Mice and Men. Love your stuff, sir!
I love this channel!!
We love you too!
I've loved this song since I was in middle school. The last "disorder" Serj holds is so perfect. The way he maintains the breath control for the whole duration, and the way he shapes the envelope of the sound all the way to the end of the note are just so cool and I geek out every time I hear it. He's not just sustaining that note, but he has a destination in mind and he knows just how to get there.
Bro, I feel the same. Falling in love all the time
Awesome group.
Great reaction, new subscriber 💛
Welcome MG!
Yesss
Thanks for reminding me that I don't understand anything about the musical language at all. Solving the universe ultimate mistery seems simpler.
YEAH
I love System of a Down and it's a shame we'll probably never see new music by them.
Serj's solo stuff is amazing though.
They released new songs this year!
I jumping around in excitement when I heard about it 🥰🤩
The song must great so many people watch it great sound
You picked some good ones, but last two HAVE to be Aerials and Chop Suey!
I never learned an instrument in my life. I'm born 92' and everytime I listen to this song I want to learn the guitar.
Never realized I need an acoustic piano cover on SOAD songs till now
YOU NEED TO DO the Mars Volta. I saw them live with System of a Down back in like 2005 and it was the best time. I was like 12 but still it was the best live performance ever
A more underground song of soad that it's pretty good aswell is Mind, from their self-titled album, or revenga
Look at each other
I need the song Question! By System of a Down to be in your 5 by!
Just doing by own drive by to recommend Question be included in your 5 by. I think you'll love the feel and the constantly changing time signature!
Question! has to be on your list
Oi David thanks for reacting to SOAD. Anywayy here´s your Reminder to react to The Conortionist Language
Hey, it's one of the "System of a Down people" just wanted to say that these guys are amazing, please do more reactions of SOAD even after the "5 by" is done, I would really like to see your reaction on many, if not, all of their songs
You need to check out the entire Toxicity album. Hands down one of the best metal albums of the 21st century
As simplified as it is GODDAMN that sounds pretty on your piano.
You're right about Serj and the punk rock elements. There are hints of Jello Biafra from Dead Kennedys in there, for sure
Welllll these guys made some really cool stuff. I mean, I don’t know which song I should suggest you!
Edit: ok one song pop up in my mind, I recommend “sad statue” :)
They most definitely are a band that you can play every album from start to beginning and love every song. I highly suggest you checkout all their stuff in your own time.
Ive seen them live many times. Each show has its own vibe. You should have been at the ozzfest in boston where godsmack "told people to chill and the police were outside ready to come in". Then they were boo'd off stage and covered it mud balls. System came out and serj said "are you motherfuckers ready to die!" And the fucking crowd went crazy. Not one ball of mud went toward that stage when they played.
Holy Mountains by System of a Down is an amazing song. you should give it a listen
Dude, your improv keys are a stellar representation of talent. Wow. You freaking rule dude. Please react to Desert Diamond by Alcatrazz. I think you’d get a kick out of it.
I've never been to one or their concerts, but now that you mention these guys must be fun to see live, I'm thinking of that concert they played in their home country, Armenia, in 2015...The crowds sure seemed to have the best time of their lives.. 🙂 If you have the chance, check it out...
Fun fact: It's a 2-hour-plus concert.. 😎
Love your reaction/analysis! Everybody will suggest the same SOAD songs as usual. I suggest you the one that nobody will, my favorite "peephole"
Holy mountains pleaseeee
PSYCHO!
Please check question by them down the road. It is highly underrated and my fav.
Chop Suey already! Stop teasing :DD
You’ll just have to be patient and see!
So cool to see someone so talented on the keyboards. If you like rhythm and melody changes, system is the band. As another great youtube react channel says, system always manages to put 2-3 songs inside 1.
Waiting for 5 (albums) by: System, which would be all their albums.
I watched the three so far just now and discovered you for the first time - great content and loving it! The metalhead in me to see you react to something heavier, something crazier. Maybe Paleface - Lights Out, Slaughter to Prevail - Demolisher or The Acacia Strain - One Thousand Painful Stings? Just some suggestions that also could bring in a new audience!
You can't miss their unique song.
BYOB
Great video! You should consider doing Rage Against The Machine next!
I suggest "Psycho." by System Of A Down, you will not regret it!!!!
3:01 / 4:03 when you play that I think instantly of Michael Myers from Halloween when they play his "tune"
Would like to hear more of your keys to these tracks
Intro reminded me of jingles episode of world of tanks
Question and Aerials next please! Aerials shows their Armenian roots best and Question is just that good! 😁
