Ngl you're probably the only music reaction channel I enjoy. Even if you do dislike the music you give your reasons for why and actually share your knowledge on the music. Really appreciate the content

There's another reason for the name. They were told not to use the word suicide in the title so they "chopped" the word in half.
So glad you FINALLY got around to reacting to SOAD!!! Thought you'd never get to it! Please do more!! Toxicity, Sugar, BYOB, Suggestions, Question, Holy Mountains, Prison Song, and many more. BRILLIANT band!!! Serg is a most unique and amazing vocalist!
Also hope you can watch some of their videos...their look is as unique as the music - it's a whole experience!

Darren the guitarist was asked about the meaning of this song and he said “ it’s about how people are judged differently by the way they pass, eg, if u died of a drug overdose people would judge and say you deserved it, hence the line “ angels deserve to die

"Suey" sounds like the first half of the word "Suicide"...alluding to the fact that they were forced to "chop" the full word...thus they chose to title the song "Chop Suey".

As per, the reaction is considered and on point.
It took me a while to warm to SOAD, but how could I not, with that voice. Great vocalist.

I remember when I first heard this on the radio and I ran out and bought the CD I loved it so much. Toxicity is another compelling one but they have a lot of good stuff. Yeah, "Father, why hast thou forsaken me" is what Jesus said from the cross at one point while he was suffering.
Another way to think about the song structures that it follows the path that Nirvana made so popular in modern music with quiet followed by loud followed by quiet followed by loud. Although bands had been doing that for a while in older music. But the way that I experience it is that it alternates between headbanging and Incredibly melodic. It is such a fantastic combination and each one always sets the stage for the next one.

Maybe tomorrow Syed will react to Since I've Been Loving You by Led Zeppelin. I check here every day for the next track off their third album. In the meantime, this is probably cool...

Good to be back after a couple months traveling.. Missed your analysis of music both well known and not so well known....such as this one. It's going to take a couple listens to take it all in. Definitely heard flavors of Beastie Boys, lyrics interesting.

The verse where it's talking about father forsaking him, those were supposedly the exact words that Christ said while he was being crucified on the cross. Christ was thinking God was forsaking him & allowing him to stay alive longer than necessary bringing him nothing but prolonged pain & suffering.

the song is called chop suey because SUEY sounds like the beginning of the word SUICIDE

    • @tanobammino2519
      @tanobammino2519 Рік тому

Yup...it's sounds like part of the word "Suicide"...therefore it's a "chopped" word.

Well, there are many interpretations to the song, but the most literal (and less interesting) is that the story is narrated form Jesus perspective, in which case is about his sadness for the girl losing her faith and damning herself. And since the lyrics are intentionally ambivalent, you can take it as a either condemnation to the vices of our times and loss of faith or a critic to the tenants of Christianity, since he laments her path to perdition but doesn't actually do anything to save her. And you could get other interesting interpretations by ignoring the reference to Jesus or shifting the perspective in different sections.
All in all, is up to the listener to read what they want, and that's what art is all about.
If you haven't, please react to Aerials as well, I think you are also going to enjoy it. I specially like the overlap between the meaning of the lyrics and the story in the official video, so watch it even if you don't react to it.

Will you review a band called Candlemass? Their genre is doom metal and most people don’t even know they exist but they are very unique. The album I would like you to review is Tales of Creation which is a story album about the end of humanity and the main character is being put on trail to determine if the human race will go on or go extinct. If you only want to try a song to see if you would like to follow the entire album from track 1, I recommend Voices in the Wind/ Under the Oak. I have tried to get someone to review them for a long time to no avail but maybe you could give them a shot.

The main meaning of the song is related to how addicts are treated by the rest of society. And even celebrated when they die in despair.
However being chopsuey they also have other meanings. Self righteous suicide is also a reference to jesus. Both Jesus and addicts being victims ultimately.
The section about why has God forsaken them is also related to Armenians questioning their god during the Armenian genocide by the Turks.... Which caused millions of deaths of Christians including Assyrians
-the band is Armenian in descent.

Amazing track. And lets not sleep on the lyrics. I always took the verse to be God self harming (Wake up, grab a brush and put a little make up. Hide the scars to fade away the shake up.) Then you here the question (Why'd you leave the keys upon the table?). God wanted to get caught..(in the form of Jesus) to create a self righteous fable. (Here you go create another fable, you wanted to.) Then you have Jesus talking to the people (I don think you trust in my self righteous suicide.) Jesus's (is of course God) heart was hurt when Satan rose up against him . Satan was an angel remember.) (I cry when angels deserve to die.) and then this part is Jesus ono the cross in his moment of pain. (Father (father) x4 Father, into your hands I commend my spirit. Father, into your hands...Why have you forsaken me? In your eyes forsaken me? In your thoughts forsaken me? And then the chorus repeats. God is Jesus so you have a "suicide by cop" situation. Ive heard the band say what the song was about but music is subjective. This was my take, I thought you'd find it interesting, @SyedRewinds.

Ive been listening to SOAD since they first came out 2 decades ago.....and I never once felt the need to know what "chop suey" actually meant. It was a Chinese food that we ate in the 70's. Jeez.....talk about over analyzing. Listen to the damned song and either like it or dont like it.

  • @3generboiler

As a Christian, I hear a very clear message in the lyrics .. it comes from Ephesians 2:8-9 .. basically there is only one way for salvation.. it’s not works or being “good” or otherwise thinking that you’re good enough or done enough to earns salvation (Ephesians 2:8-16
    New International Version
8 For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith-and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God- 9 not by works, so that no one can boast.). The makeup is trying to hide sin. The self righteous suicide is because He will not acknowledge (forsake) knowing you if you profess to be “angelic”. Angels deserve to die is because they’ve taken the wrong path to reach Heaven (Jesus and his payment for sins)
