- The only way to truly appreciate an artist is to listen to all their music, not just one song, so we came up with our "5 By" series where David checks out 5 songs by an artist.
The next artist of our "5 By" series is System Of A Down. On this episode of Cleaning Out The Shed, we go back to 2001. Check out David’s reaction to System Of A Down's "Aerials".

Omg can we do this like a 20 by 20? 😂 Their entire discography is so amazing 😭
fo real i love there music so funkin fire✊😂
You being able to listen, then just play it on the piano is literally a super power. Great breakdowns on these SOAD songs
Serj plays the keyboards so your dreams might have to be crushed.
I am crushed beyond belief
@@MusicShed Yep, both Serj and Shavo (bass player) plays keys.
@@MusicShed They have also sadly broken up.
@@aStranger_ they just played in vegas a couple weeks ago
Their drummer was mainly a jazz drummer for most of his life!
Most of their songs are in C minor for the same reason a lot of metal of the time is in C minor - their guitars are tuned to Drop C. A lot of Slipknot from that time would be B (harmonic) minor because they tuned to Drop B most of the time.
I think the entire Toxicity album was Drop C and used similar chords in various combinations (I, III, IV, and VI especially).
oh boy, i'm early for class
Their guitars were tuned in drop C, that's why they have a lot of songs in C minor.
Please react to "Question!" by them later, this song is awesome an so unique !
Yess best song of their next album
One of my absolute favourites! I really hope he does that
Serj's and Daron's vocal harmonies are mezmerizing. You can hear them in almost all songs in their last 3 album.
And also i dont think you can just stop with 5 songs, if you could please dont stop at 5. You wouldnt be dissappointed if you give them a listen:)
Pun intended?
@@frederickkwameasante7060 I was just about to say that...
Aerials is so epic. I can’t stop headbanging
I'll tell you what. If you like some band you can easily breach your 5 songs rule and react to more.. ))) It's your 4th video by SOAD so far, but you still MUST react to B.Y.O.B. and Question! These are songs from their late albums, so the music itself becomes more complex and composing skills as well, and video also with very deep meaning...for both songs...
Early crowd! I love how you play with the songs and analyze them.
Serj and Daron are a vocal duo that is like Layne Staley and Jerry Cantrell of Alice in Chains and Dave Gahan and Martin Gore of Depeche Mode; you always know that's who is singing and their voices meld perfectly. I love SOAD and Serj is one of my favorite vocalists of all time! Also, they are Armenian so that's why they have a very Middle Eastern flavor.
love how you play along and try to lock on and vibe with the song right on!!!!
Amazing piece of music!!! A masterpiece and pne of their best, if not the best, works. Everything about it, perfection! So glad you did it and liked it. Keep it up!
I loved watching your reaction to this song. It’s so great seeing your passion and excitement on a new song.
a love how it sound in piano, amazing, great video!!
WOW! I dont often comment on videos, but I came across your reaction videos this evening.
Great job, great breakdowns! Thank you!
I really appreciate you sharing your musical skills with us...much respect and admiration.
My only critique....Id love to hear more of YOU taking the song and doing your own thing with it after the song is over.
I think it really adds to both the video, and the song, to hear and learn from someone with your musical skills more about what it is were hearing!
Cheers brother! Keep it up.
Im headed back to see/ hear what else youve done.
Such a great series, so fun to watch!
The Xs and Os/science within and below my surface knowledge, of anything in life, is always appreciated...
The delivery of your knowledge and natural skill is awesome. Thank you.
One of my favorite songs of all time on one of the best albums of all time. Great reaction and glad you enjoyed it.
I really like your takes on the piano, I would enjoy seeing this and / or other songs played as a cover :)
Well done once again
07:26 when he started playing the harmonies after one listen 🤯
Yesss 🤣 I love watching your reactions and learning something about my favourite songs
This song is one of the very very first metal songs I fell in love with, even if it is pretty light. I cannot get this grin off my face seeing you enjoy this song.
Toxicity was probably THE most memorable and iconic album to ever cross my path as a child. I had heard a few songs by them from their first album, but when this came out I had enough money as a kid to buy it and I rocked this album every day. I loved many albums growing up but this one just always holds a special place in my heart.
1:29 It really is their favorite key, so many of them are in C minor, it just works for their style.
MORE SYSTEM. I love your breakdowns on these. System always keeps it Interesting. And you haven't even heard their last two albums! Or their two new songs
Was great to see them live CLE in 2005. They blew us all away.
I love this song so muuuch. it's so...chefs kiss, guys. the calm, the intensity, the controlled "chaos" in the slowness of this song...the teen part of my soul still feels it
Because this song is designed to be a sad, tragic, anguished affair. The chaos of the verses are full of anguish and the chorus is clearly a tragic affair. They are losing their identity. This is a mournful affair.
@@Chirpysemperboy You love the word affair.
never thought I could fall in love all over again with SOAD through your eyes/ears 😍❤️🙏
Instant subscribe, your piano skill are on point
This is my go to System song for karaoke. Always gets the crowd going 🤘🤘
Great song this one
Daron also has a bunch of songs in the SOAD discography where he's the lead singer, and they are pretty good too. Such as Lonely Day (which has some incredible harmonies).
Their lyrics are just next level
One of my favorite things about Sytem is the harmony between Serj and Daron (pronounced like dare-in lol). Daron himself is a great singer and when him and Serj sing together its beautiful because of how well their voices compliment eachother. On the first three albums its not a lot of that but the last two albums there is and its amazing. Some of their stuff is simple yet memorable which is what Daron likes to do as a song writer using the drop c tuning for the first 3 albums and drop c sharp for the last 2. Loved the reaction cant wait to see you hear B.Y.O.B. If you happen to be awesome and bless us with a 6th video I'd STRONGLY reccomend either Dreaming or Soldier Side by them and you wont be dissapointed :))
Holy guacamole, you are so talented. I need Soad to perform a piece with you.
Luv the piano breakdown. Luv to hear Sevendust - Live Again
I love your videos 🎹♥️
Looks like they were in the band in school and they new how play before they pick up great music
wow, didnt expect this so early, none the less, I hope you are having fun with these songs, I recommend the big 5 first which goes as follows, "Toxicity, Chop Suey, Aerials, B.Y.O.B, and Sugar." It would be amazing if you checked out other songs like Bubbles, Lost in Hollywood, Genocidal Humanoidz, I-E-A-I-A-I-O, Highway Song, Johnny (which isnt on any albulm), and Darts, all of which are great and amazing songs by them, also have been loving these SOAD reactions, keep it up man
I would ask Daron (lead guitar/harmony) to go tour with since he seems to be the only making music at the moment. Daron I believe wrote all the music for system?.
I also really want to see you and Rick do a what make this song so great/song direction because that would be so damn entertaining.
You both have the same energy and its great.
BYOB SQUAD
System has got some killer harmonies
One of the best songs in the Nu Metal era, this one has to be in the top 10 for sure.
5 by isn’t enough for SOAD, but I’m glad you’re taking a liking to them. One on my top 5 bands for sure. Also, David you’re the man! (Howie you cool too)
There’s something about a simple dish done well to show mastery.
I think you find BYOB very interesting
Seeing how much you have enjoyed these I'd love to see you check out scars on Broadway as well, it's daron's other project and I love them just as much as soad
Awesome video. I would definitely suggest Holy Mountains as well
Oh my god, I looked away from my phone for a second after opening the video and I thought it was a TheMightyJingles video 😂
He has been using that intro song for years
I think you would really enjoy their song Question!
Lmao I beat the notifications to this video
Another lovely review and breakdown! Interesting to discover that they are C minor fans 😃
Chop Suey next!
A 5 by of A Day to Remember would be great, they've got a good range of songs that would be really interesting
Oh, yes, I forgot: "Please, react to Spiritbox - The Mara Effect live at Silverside Sound". Come on Mister. You will travel to another dimension with this music. Just trust me and fall into it...
5 By Muse Please! :D
Do B.Y.O.B man, its one of the essentials.
I guess you'll like this ones from them: Questions and Hypnotize.
@4:20 sounded a lot like hollow bastion in kingdom hearts
I do enjoy watching your reactions to great songs. I would enjoy it more if you explained a little more of the musicology of the songs. Techniques used and other great features than just the stock 1 4 5 approach that is in lots of popular songs.
They had a small orchestra to play some violins and more for Chop Suey (maybe its such a small orchestra that it isn't even an orchestra anymore, anyways you get what I mean I hope 😂) they also have them play here on Aerials, don't know if you noticed. You can hear it at 1:24 very clear. REALLY HOPE TO SEE CHOP SUEY NEXT IT'S A MASTERPIECE 🥺 Love your reactions.
david, may i suggest you make a review from the new video of Dayseekers, i'ts absolute terrific
Enjoying the SOAD 5 by. Just wish it was a 10 or 20 by 🤣. Enjoyed your playing as well. How some Rush or Megadeth next?
Love this series! Huge fan of System of a Down and love your reactions! If you missed out on Linkin Park and System of a Down when they were in their peaks, you should definitely do a 5By of Breaking Benjamin, another classic nu-metal band of that time period!
Man, you should do covers of rock and metal songs like Vkgoeswild does. Even you just messing around with the chords sounds beautiful.
Daron used a baritone Ibanez Iceman for a lot of early system.
I would LOVE to see you do a 5 by of In Fear And Faith
The Taste of Regret
Heavy Lies the Crown
Bones
A Creeping Dose
Last Man Stranded
AND Sky Eats Airplane!
Giants in the Ocean
Everything Perfect on the wrong Day
Long Walks on Short Bridges
Numbers
World Between us
Please do hypnotize!!!!
I dunno how guitar tuning translates into piano but they tune down 2 full steps then drop the Low E string so its Drop C tuning, is that why its always in Cminor? Not sure but either way this was my favorite key then as i learned guitar. Love the content, keep it up.
I commented before i finished but wow at like 4:00 when u talk about the haunting colour, that bit you played was beautiful. Thank you
This is the last song on the album that has an outro song called Arto i would highly recommend it. You'd love it musically.
Sleep Token - David
This video is scary and I really don’t understand it but the guitars are awesome 🤩
BYOB for the last one 🙌🏼
Great series! I personally think Radio/Video is a cool song by them to listen to.
This was the first "metal" song I ever liked as a kid! So many memories!!!!!!
Thanks for the deep dive/analysis into the song. Love the channel and content
Really hope you get a chance to check out Dream State - Burn Them Down or White Lies
COTS suggestion: La Dispute: King Park
You should definitely react to contraband by make them suffer! It also has Courtney from spiritbox in it
You def need to do a 50 song by soad! Also a top ten by mudvayne. Do some tool and a perfect circle! Doing amazing things here in your shed! Keep it up!! Love your critique of all three bands like falling in reverse!
I seem to always mix up aeriels and spiders. They sound fairly similar...at least towards the beginning
Lonely day i know its probably going to be a more likely to be BYOB or something else but Lonely day is so underrated imho
Since he like to play the piano a lot he should listen to either to the song "glassy sky" from the anime "Tokyo Ghoul", or "My Soul, Your Beats" from the anime "Angel Beats", (Sorry i don't know the original artists).
But check these out, i think they are amazing with piano.
5 by really needs to cover more time rather than just popular songs. Cover the evolution of the bands from first album to most recent!
And then others would say the opposite. It was just nice for me to get to know these guys at all!
@@MusicShed Very true, glad you chose System. Maybe a different series to cover the evolution then!
You should do a song by Tesseract, they are very unique and have some fun time signatures.
Tesseract - Exile
or - Acceptance I
or - Retrospect
or - Singularity
You'd love those dude I think! Good content as always man!
Chop suey!!
I think this song really shows how they incorporate Armenian folk melodies into their sound… and it’s awesome… even if it’s still Cm ;)
Very love your professional view👏🏼 thank you
Can you please react to Nothing More 😱
This Is the Time
Go To War
I’ll be okay (live acoustic)
Let ‘em burn
Don’t Stop
Please!
I might even add you listen to their song Revenga.
You ought to do a run of videos with tool and their work.
You should react to Air Conditioned Nightmare by Mr. Bungle
You make piano playing look so easy. I took lessons for 13 years and I didn’t even get close to this…. I started when I was 5. I can’t improv, which is a lot of the problem.
You can improv, I promise
I love B minor myself
My mans nasty on the keyboards 😤
Serj Tankian - Sky is Over
Serj Tankian - Sky is Over
Serj Tankian - Sky is Over
Which artist? Which song?
@@MusicShed Serj Tankian(SOAD singer) has a solo project. Empty walls and sky is over are great songs
@@MusicShed Serj Tankian (System Of A Down vocalist), started his solo work in 2008, Sky is Over is one of his songs from the album Elect The Dead.
You will see Serj playing the piano there, so it may crush your dreams, sry
Empty Walls as well
#EarlySquad
You should definately check out "my ass is on fire" by Mr. Bungle. Its very extravagant but I think you will appreciate it. Been loving the videos lately, especially the SOAD ones.
Dunno crap about keys or chord progressions but for something on the wildside maybe do Bounce?
If anything, stay for those lyrics! Haha, so funny that the Secret life of Pets used that in so much of its marketing!
August Burns Red and Between the Buried and Me 5 By's pleaseeeeeeee
