I got tears in my eyes watching this video. I have solidly type 3 hair, mostly 3b and 3c, and didn't know how much even I needed to hear someone bring this issue to the table. My entire life hearing people describe their 2a hair as "soooooo curly" really made me feel alienated, and I don't even have the experience of someone with type 4 hair. Even though all I see online is that I should be quiet because everyone in the curly space wants type 3 hair, I can't find anyone with type 3 hair when I look for advice online! I shouldn't get as excited as I do when I see examples of my hair online, but it's actually that rare to see due to overtyping. I think a really helpful rule of thumb to differentiate type 2 from 3 hair is this: type 3 and up hair types get curlier in conditions where type 2 hair will start falling or loosening. Humidity makes my curls tighten, not fall out. As the days go since I washed and my hair starts getting dry it gets tighter not looser. A person with type 3 hair will be confused when you tell them about methods you use to get your texture to develop, because they've spent their whole life trying to tame theirs and not to make it appear. The crown of my head is the tightest curl pattern, not something I stress about because it looks straight. If you've never had a hair stylist tell you that your hair is unruly and that part of the "problem" is that your hair curls from the root...you're probably a type 2. Please listen to this video, take it to heart. Is okay to have type 2 hair. No one hates you because you have type 2 hair, they feel hurt and invalidated when type 2's fill up the space and are defensive from the jump because they deep down know they don't have the experience of a person with type 3 hair.

Bro fr I'm a 3A and I've got like.... Curl dysmorphia lmao in kidding that's not a thing but the amount of people in my life (white people tbh) telling me "your hair is so curly!!!!" and I reply "not really, it's a pretty loose curl tbh like it's only curly in the front" and they're like "noooooo it's so curly" like nooooo girl it's really not lmao?? But then all these wavy haired chicks are like "my hairs curly" and I'm like????? wait what? Nah MY hair is hardly curly how is YOUR hair curly?
Really nice explanation. I had never heard anyone say curly from the root to the end is necessary to be curly. It was really helpful. What annoys me is the creators who are obviously using hot tools on their hair and acting like it occurred naturally in diffusing. Just a pet peeve. Thanks again. This is a really good video.

I call it "aspirational hair-typing" because so many wavies think they're curly. I'm a 2B and have been for most of my life. Nothing I do is going to make me a 2C or a 3A and my crown will never curl - and I'm okay with that. And you're absolutely right, thinking we're curly when we're wavy leads to all kinds of money spent on the wrong products. Great job calling out misrepresentation on social media and beyond and the problems with CGM alienating type 3 and 4 people. Black people started the natural hair movement and they never get the credit for that. And thank you so much for coming back to talk about the attack issue. Correction is not an attack. I mean, if it's rudely stated, then yes. But if someone is just telling you the truth, that's good. We seem to have lost that as a nation - maybe as a species. The truth is important.

I have type 3b/3c hair on the top, and 4a all underneath. My frustration in trying to find actual content about my hair type has gone on for a while and I don’t think I had really put it together that wavy hair overtyping was related. It makes so much sense now. I search for type 3 content and am flooded with photos of type 2 that has been styled to look curlier. I’m mixed race Afro-Latina and was adopted by white parents so my hair journey has been difficult and confusing since childhood. I have to have my hair cut very specifically into weird layers, as the underside being so tight and coarse causes incredible shrinkage (we’re talking like 10”) while the top layer has less shrinkage, and they have totally different porosities and textures. I actually have to use different products on the different areas for certain styles. My specific hair needs are almost never talked about. Finding the right products is something I’ve had to do on my own a lot, simply bc there are so few people to look up to with my hair type on social media. But anyways, i guess as the curly hair “movement” has taken hold, I started sort of accepting like “huh, I guess most people have curly hair”. When in fact it seems most people actually have wavy hair, and that’s why I’ve been feeling left out of the conversation. It has seemed lately that products and media content and curly hair groups are centered around wavy hair, but when they keep calling it curly, people like me get lost in the shuffle and have a really hard time finding representation or advice. I feel like maybe a good way for me to think of it is, if you have to work to get your hair to "curl" it's probably wavy. Correct me if I'm wrong 😅 but I'm going to do better going forward and start labeling my hair correctly.

I think this was very interesting and an eye opener that type 3 hair types have issues as well as type 4. I am a type 4c and have no hair specialists I can go to where I live but have noticed increasingly some podcasters will describe type 4 as frizzy when it's not but that's because they don't understand the hair. We need to embrace our true hair and understand how to treat it for it to be its best. I've met a few friends recently who have misunderstood their hair to be straight when it's actually wavy. I think this is a result of overtyping and it's sad and wrong.

This was such a great video, Jordan. The O/S shaped pattern is a point we need to talk about more. I'm definitely wavy, 2b/2c ish, but the O shaped pattern made me think I had curls for years. Especially because my spirals will sort of interlock giving what looks like a single tightly spiraled clump.
And I fought against being told I'm wavy. As you said, unlearning things is hard, especially when you're being corrected on a feature of your own appearance. But listening to people who are harmed by our actions is important--certainly more important than clinging to a false perception of self.

Thanks for your thoughts, work, and content. Typing kept me believing I was just in some sort of weird 2-year long transition. In fact, I'm 1C more than anything. Is it straight? Nope! There are visibly definite, opinionated Waves through it now. But it's nothing like Jordan Faith's, or anyone else's 2a waves. My actual hair was either unrepresented on a chart or it was called "straight." Since it wasn't "straight," well, it must be 2a, right? I figured I should just patiently take care of my mermaid-length hair...for 2 years as it persisted in changing in it's own dramatic way...waiting for the 2a day when there would be anything worth running a Denman brush through. While I see now that this will never be the case... I have wavy hair and 1C (if you still want to chart it somewhere) is pretty awesome. Also, me and my hair exist, chart or no chart. Incidentally, does any kind of method make your hair curly? Maybe not, but.... now all the hair around my hairline that always frizzed and broke grows for the first time ever. And it's 2a. I look really funny right now 'cuz I don't know what to do with it yet. :)

it's genuinely has been very insightful because i've had pretty significant texture changes very quickly - in the past year or so. it's been interesting to see my hair go from "2c/3a" - overtyped 2a/b hair with ringlets and the O shape - to something closer to an actual 2c/3a. i've always had 'thick' (despite being medium width and medium density) hair that was pretty resistant to being over-moisturised, but heavier products have recently become an actual necessity. now my hair actually curls at the root, doesn't go flat from sleeping etc., i have to treat it very differently and finding information from people with similar hair to me is much more difficult.
i'm lucky enough that i didn't grow up with curly hair, i didn't have stylists or the desi side of my family make (too many) comments about my hair, and i'm even luckier that i will never be subject to discrimination on the basis of my hair like many of the black people who laid the foundations for the curly hair community. hopefully the video hasn't garnered too many nasty comments

I enjoyed this video and learned more about type 2 hair (which I have). Truthfully its hard to find content creators who really understand wavy hair, so I can only imagine what its like for type 3 hair. I am low porosity/corse hair - did a hair analysis and so I can get away with some hair products geared towards type 3 hair. But truth be told i am envious of type 3 hair as I would love to have my beautiful curls for days after a washing. But I also love my wavy hair. But I do go to a curly hair stylist - who understands wavy hair as you everyday stylist in a salon an for years couldn’t understand why I never could het a cut that brought out my waves more until I went to a specialist. I love all types of hair 2-3-4 and admire them even if I don’t say anything because I love hair in its natural state. Thanks for the video

I like the premise of this discussion because thinking your hair is curly when it's wavy can cause product overload. I have, according to your explanation, 2C hair and when I started my hair health journey I bought a load of products that did not work on my hair. Not only did I spend loads of money but got really frustrated because they were too heavy for my hair and I couldn't achieve the curls I expected. But ...if someone said "I love your curly hair!" I'm not going to say "Oh it's wavy." I'm just going to be happy it's healthy. Thanks for talking about this overtyping. Because its not healthy for your hair or mentally to try to achieve a "TYPE" rather than healthy hair.

Thank you for this important video! I've supported the CROWN Act since Mitchell introduced it in California, but still needed your video. You explained the problems with overtyping--from personal to global--while valuing every hair type. Several years ago a "curly" salon showed me that I don't have straight hair, and I've been chasing curls ever since. It all felt like deja vu: I grew up having the wrong hair, the wrong body, the wrong clothes, the wrong family... While I largely have overcome that over the decades, you've helped me root out another fragment!
Learning from UA-camrs with type 2 hair has empowered me to choose to style my hair straight or wavy. Now, thanks to you, I will take pride in and faithfully love my 2A hair! I no longer feel compelled to strive for 2B or 2C, and I fully understand why it isn't 3a...even on a ringlet day. 😆 I'm grateful to you and to my friend that shared this video with me after telling me a few months ago the global importance of accurate typing. Thanks to the two of you, I'll happily call my hair wavy and spread the word!

Loved this video! I have 2a hair. It is wavy and sometimes it twists in places. I don't find this content controversial at all. I think it depends on how it is delivered. I see examples of mistyping hair all over the Internet. This video has helped me a lot! I have a hard time finding content for fine, wavy hair that gets weighed down easily. Fantastic video Jordan, I see this problem on Facebook pages all the time. People with very loose waves, especially people with waves looser than yours using products that are too heavy getting stringy, greasy, limp hair, posting a photo demonstrating this then getting offended in the comments when people point out they are overtyping and using products too heavy for them. I find using a dry brushing test of sorts to be helpful for wavy hair typing. My top sections are clearly a looser wave type because they look a lot limper when I brush through clean dry hair but still pretty smooth compared to my underside hair which keeps it's tighter, very defined S shape when I dry brush it but puffs out like a frizzy triangle. Two totally different results when I put a brush to my head. Another tell is the clump size and number of wave bumps along the clumps. Product free 2c clumps are thinner and bumpier than 2b and 2a is even looser and less defined. I treat the top half of my hair differently to the bottom half and that works best for me. I used to think my top sections having UV damage was why they were looser and not looking as wavy but I soon learned they are just a totally different wave type and making my hair healthier did make my hair bounce up more but it wasn't going to magically make my hair all one wave category or suddenly make heavier products work on those looser top sections. Another thing is hair brands like shea moisture abandoning their original coily customers by coming out with lighter formulas that don't work for coily hair, moreso curly hair. This is a big concern. All hair types should have access to hair products that work for them and reviewers who overtype and complain about weighed down results contributes to this problem by encouraging brands to stop stocking richer products that coily hairtypes need for optimum results. Just popping back in to say that even though I don't entirely agree with you (I actually don't even bother using Andre Walker's system at all for the most part lol, it's too complicated for me so I just say wavy), I still 100% respect you and your viewpoints that you've made very clearly and articulately here. I personally advocate for just saying straight/wavy/curly/coily in the colloquial sense of "it has waves or curls or coils in it or not" and don't get more specific than that (unless I'm in a hair-specific space ofc), but I have shared this video numerous times and will continue to do so. You're one of the most knowledgeable people I know about wavy hair and really helped me in my wavy hair journey (especially in steering me away from CGM, so thanks multiple times over for that!) Also really respect your work within Curlfriends Facebook group if it's okay to mention your other life here lol

I'm very thankful that you made this video because it's something I've been saying but people don't seem to want to hear me. It's funny how if you tell someone that they're overtyping they'll get upset but at the same time if I was to call my 4a hair 3a because I have "ringlets" lol everyone would be coming for me and telling me how wrong I am lol. Maybe I'll just start saying I have 3a hair now and when anyone calls me out I'll just say it's not a big deal who cares? Malicious compliance.

At the risk of sounding snotty, I get frustrated looking for help and recommendations with my hair type 3b/c and finding women with drastically different curls than mine when I search for it. I have seen three curly hair stylists (I did my research on each one especially since I had some really BAD experiences) over a span of several years and they have all defined my hair as 3b/c, which is how I came to that conclusion. With that being said, I usually don't find a lot of helpful content, so I appreciate you speaking on this topic.

Ugh thank you for explaining the o/s curl pattern. I am not dedicated enough to get into curly girl, and I'm now 100% certain I have 2a hair. It's so confusing because I have spirals, not S. But they're soft spirals, and far from being curly. And I can't figure out how to use a diffuser without making my hair kinky, so I only really wanted the information to help me learn how to air dry my hair when I don't want to heat style.

I have wavy hair and am going back to styling it naturally wavy for the 4th time in the past 9 years. In years past I would aim for what was called 3a loose ringlets and I've since come to the place where I love my hair for what it is the pattern it is and it doesn't need to be anything else. Same!! I follow Curly Susie and Swavy Curly Courtney here on UA-cam. They're wavies. But otherwise there are a lot of curlies out there who just brush off wavies like our hair doesn't matter.

I agree that labeling your hair correctly is much more helpful to us waives looking for information online. In the same sense I don’t like the typing because some days I feel like it’s hard to be a wavy. Sometimes it feels like we aren’t ‘enough’. It’s hard to be in the middle- neither straight nor curly. I’ve never claimed to be curly (even though most of my hair is ringlets that show up without styling), but some curly haired people in my life have made a lot of comments that have made me feel less than- not knowing that I’m a wavy myself. But maybe it is because of the problem you share here.

I don’t label my hairtype because I don’t care 🙈 I have wavy hair that’s it 💕 I have wave-o-ringlets at the back of my neck and looser on top and in the front. My waves start from the roots and I have a lot of volume. In my language we don’t call it wavy, we have straight or curly, I don’t even think we have a name for coily (and find that sad)

I think you had mentioned type 4 discrimination is not illegal in every state. CA has passed the crown act which makes it illegal to discriminate against someone because of their hair texture I think it was the first state to do so. I LOVE this video. I am a wavy with some ringlets and have some hair that curls from the roots. I got a Deva cut and she said my hair was curly not wavy because I had lots of ringlets. I disagreed. I can't use products that curlies use because I would be an over moisturised mess!

Nice! I have type 2 hair. How do I know? When it is cut short, before the first ringlet or curl forms, it is straight . It’s only as it grows that loose curls and ringlets begin to form. But it’s straight at the crown.

the only issue I have with this is that hair type can change over time. if your hair is damaged you really have no way of knowing your TRUE hair type. when my hair was damaged my hair appeared to be a 1B. it's actually 1C/2A

If you curl type on unstyled hair I think a lot more people would really have wavy instead of curly hair type.
This happens because of gatekeeping within the community. If your hair is wavy you get laughed at and bullied by super-curlies (girl, your hair isn't curly at all! It's practically straight! Why are you even here? 🤣🤣🤣Gtfoh!). Like, I got hate growing up because my hair was supposed to be straight and it was a frizzy, poofy mess that wouldn't straighten. Now I get hate because my hair isn't "curly enough". And it doesn't usually come from Black women. They know my hair isn't supposed to look like theirs.
Also, my hair is super dense and it weighs itself down. When it's short it's mostly ringlets from the root. When it's long it's wavy on top with ringlets underneath. So I just call it whirly.
Seriously, the curly community is brutal. They make us wavies wanna shave our heads. At least they do me.

No, this happens because people - usually people of colour - are correcting us. I've never seen someone laugh anyone with wavy hair out of a group because their hair isn't curly, just correctly informing people their hair isn't curly but wavy. Honestly I'd be frustrated as heck too if people always overtyped and whenever I tried to correct them they got upset.
@@sandrahoad7152 overtyping is harmful to the Black community specifically, as I outlined in depth in this video.
Correction isn’t bullying, but some folks will get rightfully upset when wavies fight back when corrected about being wavy rather than curly, since overtyping is causing direct harm to those with curly and coily hair.
Wavy hair is beautiful, and most people just don’t understand what wavy hair actually is so they fight against the term.
Great video. There’s definitely an aesthetic zeitgeist of type 3 being the hair goal. I have wavy hair - 2b/2c - and since I started the curly girl method I’ve felt myself infected with the “curlier the better” attitude even while actively trying to appreciate what I have. I still get excited when my curlier bits decide to go into spirals and wish my whole head was that way. Then I find myself wishing that I didn’t wish that …
So much of what we find beautiful is relative. I was recently looking at some pre raphaelite paintings which show women with ultra long, thick wavy hair and noticed that they were brushing through and had real floof. Clearly the artists found big, poofy waves beautiful. The sort of hair we CGM followers would complain about lacking definition and being frizzy because it was brushed out.
If you “discovered” you have wavy/curly hair, you don’t have curly hair.
I disagree with what you're saying about hair pattern being a bigger factor than porosity and hair thickness when it comes to choosing products. I know someone with extremely coarse straight hair that actually needs heavy products. Meanwhile I have a friend with curly hair (mine is wavy) who actually needs lighter weight products than I do because her hair is fine, and mine is medium. And just because people struggle to understand porosity, doesn't mean it's not a major factor that determines what kind of products we need.
I think the curl typing system is flawed and misused. While I agree that many people overtype their hair… I think you are doing the opposite. And the fact is… there is no one here who can say they are a specialist in curl typing… because this is not a science at all!
A person is not curly or wavy. The curl typing system unperfectly describes the shapes that hair can take. And many factors can affect that. One person can also have multiple curl pattern.
Its a non-sense to tell people that they are not curly of everyone have been calling them curly for over 30 years.
That being said… its true that many girls with wavy hair who get a few curls sometimes are not at all representative of very curly hair. I have both curls (undeneat) and waves on top and the difference is real. With proper styling, I can get ringlets on the top. But these will fall flat with time, while the curls underneat gets curlier… back to factory default!
I prefer “loose curl” for hair that do get loose curls, including ringlets and waves. Thats closer to the truth than wavy or simply curly.
Fun twist of life: I have 2 sons, both with past shoulder length hair (when wet). The oldest inherited the curls, the youngest inherited the waves.
My oldest son’s hair will curl whaterver he does, with big chunky (3a) curls that rolls over themselves, but flat and frizy roots without styling. When his hair is shorter, it gets curls from the roots. He can’t dry brush his hair without creating a mess.
His young brother has silky hair, low frizz, slight waves and some ringlets starting to form under the ear. When his hair is shorter, it looks almost straight. He can dry brush his hair and it will get its shape back. We can make his hair curlier with proper styling, but it will be flater the next day.
As a girly who has everything from 2b to 3a this is big issue. And some of it I think is wavy discrimination. Like being wavy isn’t enough so you call it curly for people to accept it. Your category doesn’t matter! It helps when picking products but not always. Just look around. Follow people off all textures. You’ll learn so much and you’ll get to know your individual hair. Don’t overthink it.
This isn't it at all, Bridget. Texturism goes the opposite way. Wavy hair is literally the eurocentric beauty standard. Why else do you think that the Crown Act protects Black people's hair rather than wavy hair?
2:53 I have to disagree here.I agree with a lot of the points in your video, but if your hair fully spirals its a curl/type 3 IMO. Everyone has their own opinion, but if the strand makes a spiral no matter how loose even if only at the bottom its still a spiral. My hair falls 2a-3a because sometimes its a little wavy in some parts and really wavy in others and some days she's curly. I do occasionally get curls up to my roots, but even if I didn't I would still consider myself curly and anyone else with spirals curly. Again just my opinion. Im also really into the science of hair care and I classify more my strand shape. You have the right to identify your hair however. No one would get pushed off the chart as long as we remember shape.
This is incorrect, and the entire point of my video is for people to learn and acknowledge that type 3 hair is not just any hair with spirals. Type 2 hair with spirals and actual type 3 hair behave completely differently and need different care

Its fine if we disagree, but even if two people have the exact curl pattern, their needs vastly vary by porosity/damage/genetics. I need to load my hair with moisture even though I have a looser curl pattern. Different curls need different care, but someone with 2a hair could do a 4c routine and still see results if their hair needs more moisture and products. You touched on other things in the video that I agreed with, just not that point. Agree to disagree on this, but either way I love your content that I've seen

@@JordanFaith 2A hair isn't a one size fits all routine. Some people with loose patterns benefit from products like oils, heavy creams, etc; While 2A hair is more prone to being weighed down, not all 2A hair get weighed down. Same thing with 4C hair, while most people with 4C hair need way more moisture, some people need way less. curl type can act as a starting point of what will PROBABLY work, but not all people with 2A hair will struggle with too heavy of products and not all 4C hair will struggle with lack of moisture. Curl type is helpful when starting a routine, but sometimes you'll find someone with 2A hair that needs a TON of product for their hair to be well moisturized.
@@funajgamer6311 a curl is a spiral, but I think her point is that you should type are based off of how most of it behaves. so yes there is one or two curls, but most of it falls in waves. a lot of wavy hair also has a few inches at the top that is completely straight, but that doesn't mean they have straight hair.
