I struggle like crazy! So much work! Plus I have very fine, low density hair which is a struggle on its own. I think you did a wonderful job considering it was your first time. Not to mention, your hair is beautiful! I give you an A+! I may try this again on a day when I have more patience. And you're right, it's an arm workout! haha!
I struggled with this so much! I've tried it by putting product in then brush styling and I've tried brush styling then scrunching my product. Ultimately it's too much time for me to do my whole head but I have been using the Denman brush on the sections of my hair that have a looser curl pattern where it doesn't clump well.
No and its funny they never really explained how to use them in beauty school. That was 20 years ago. I'm just beginning wearing wavy hair on myself so it's something I'll try.
I've been following Manes by Mell for a few months now and I highly recommend sticking with it. The first few times with the Denman brush are difficult because you're trying too hard and obsessing over your results too much. After that you learn to let the brush do the work and give it a bit more space. I do seven sections total on my hair now for maximum definition in less time than my very first time and my arms don't get tired. Practice makes perfect! The Denman brush also isn't just about getting definition in your hair, it's exceptional at training your curls to be their curliest by giving your roots consistent instruction, a benefit that is difficult to achieve with scrunching alone. Training curls takes at least a year of persistence but just a few months in I can already tell it's going to be worth it.
Thank you! My hair looks almost exactly like yours - same color, cut, density, etc so this gives me a good idea of how it'll come out. Your hair looks great, so fluffy and soft with plenty of definition.
I know this video is two years old, but I’m just transitioning from daily flat ironing to styling my hair in it’s naturally wavy/curly state. It was so helpful seeing someone new to brush styling trying MbyM’s technique. Thanks!!!
I just love how you explain everything and add lots of tips at each stage! I understand Melos routine better now than after watching her video 😂Also your voice is full of smiles! Thanks for sharing your experience with us, you’ve got a new subscriber 😉
I think it turned out beautifully. There is definitely some learning involved with the Denman brush and I would love to see another video after you have had some time to practice.
Oh I loved this. You did so good! And being a hairstylist it kills me to say this, but your parts were almost too clean and perfect lol. Next time just a little less perfection or a zigzag part and you will have less issues with stubborn parts ☺. Great job though 👏.
I don’t use mine often but when I do I’ll first style my hair as I normally would then section off the top layers to use the denman. When I scrunch style first I can pick up individual hair clumps and not get any parts.
I use the Denman brush, but don't go through all of that. I brush it all upside down scrunch and dry. Everything done in 30 minutes. I have wavy curly hair and I just think we can't make it do what other curlier hair people can. I have a more India bastian hair style. I embrace a little frizz for more volume. Try uncle funky's daughter's gel, it makes a huge difference.
I have not tried a Denman brush, yet😏 Watching Your demo of the technique and seeing Your AMAZING BEAUTIFUL Curly Locks gives me inspiration to give it a try🤩 Thank You For All of Your Tips!💜 I hope @ManesbyMell likes your Results!👸 Keep the Good info coming, please!😍
I've had my Denman, the 7 row, for almost 2 weeks. Today will be my 4th wash day with it. I can't say I love the results but I also have never brush styled or upright styled before. I'm willing to give it a few more tries and I think I need to make smaller sections after watching your video.
Once you get just a little bit of practice you can do your whole head in under 5 mins. I also have low density hair and to get rid of the visible parts, I mess the top of my head up and flip hair on top from side to side while drying. I have also thrown in some messy hair clips to give some volume by just letting them grab random hair on top.
Great job! Your hair is gorgeous! It will get easier the more you do it. Upside down styling is good for circulation & your Denman brush routine is well worth the effort!
Thank you so much!! I for sure need to practice with it again, but my sister in law asked to borrow it a couple months ago and keeps forgetting to give it back to me 😅
I’ve been finger coiling my hair (I do have a looser curl pattern), and I plan to get a Denman brush because finger coiling takes a while for me. But I’m kind of new to the CGM so I’m trying out all sorts of techniques to find my sweet spot. I really enjoyed your video! Your hair turned out amazing 🤩
I couldn't help but laugh a little when you were struggling because I had the same problem! 😂 I've tried this technique 3 times now and I really like it. I usually style my hair upright so the 2nd time was easier. I can't style my hair upside down, my entire body gives up lol hope you can try it again and get better definition 🥰💛
Lol, it was a bit laughable! I’m excited to keep practicing. Upright styling is so hard for me, especially when I’m filming and just have a tiny mirror to look into 😅 I’m glad it works well for you!!
*So* helpful! 👏🏻 I used a Denman for the first time yesterday and my waves ended up looking stringy. 🙄 I'm *sure* it was totally my fault, so I will keep trying. You got some amazing root lift and your hair is just gorgeous! Thank you for sharing!
I can totally see where the stringiness would come from! I think that will improve with practice. I’ve also found adding more water helps and I’ve heard removing rows from the brush can help- but that does seem a bit daunting to me haha! Thank you very much for your support 🥰
First video I've seen of yours. I'll be subscribing. You are the first person I've seen not use huge amounts of product! 👏👏👏👏 Love Manes by Mel and tried the denman brush, but like you, I thought it was too much work, and due to arthritis, too painful on my arms and shoulders. I enjoyed seeing how little product you use. Less is more. 😊✌❤🎶
I have naturally wavy and thick hair. As long as I keep it moisturized and tangle free it will be wavy. Bought this D3 brush to get rid of the tangles.
Thank you for a great video tutorial! I am with you in that I don't like upright styling for same reasons, I'm totally uncoordinated with it and honestly, I think my curls have found their curl families from upside down styling with a brush on soaking wet hair after my leave-in and/or defining cream ( like Swavy-Curly Courtney)! I use a Wet Brush to smooth and detangle, but follow with my styling brush of choice ( a 5, 7, or a 9 row denman; the behairful brush or my favorite the curlkeeper open backed paddle + the denman paddle(its like the classic denman as far as tension, but is a paddle brush) then I continue my stylers if I need more than Leave-in and/or defining cream like gel, foam or mousse etc upside down & scrunch & wet plop and microplop & diffuse routine. This has worked best for me overall, all upside down 😜😄...
I have extremely thick naturally curly long hair and it takes me over an hour to do this... I use an air dry and detangling spray to help my hair dry quicker and I use it a lot in the fall and winter months because during the fall and winter months it takes my hair 2 and a half days to completely dry.... Your turned out beautiful ☺☺☺❤❤❤ I always use Argan oil
I just found out your channel and it is so lovely :) Today I used my denman brush for 5th time and with your video I can see that there are 4 different ways to use denman brush. I use to twist part of the hair on the handle and it makes a perfect "kremroly" (it is in czech I do not know how to translate it) but I am 3A curly girl so it just helps me to a better definition. :)
You did great for your first time. I’ve used the denman many times and it still takes me forever. I’m so bad at sectioning 😂 I’ve given up on using it for the most part it’s just not worth the time for me.
Try the Behairful brush! It’s worth every penny. I find it incredibly easy to use and much better ribboning effect. And it detangles as well which you can’t do with the denman.
Which Denman do you have?! Your hair looks amazing! Mine has been acting a fool lately and my curls are acting like an 18 year old away from home for the first time (wild, unruly, or nonexistent and stubborn lately) going to try and tame them again
I have trouble with my scalp showing, so I'm thinking this brush may not be the one for me. Plus I have a three year old and one coming in June. Styling that requires as lot of time is not ideal for me right now lol. Thanks for sharing.

I find it interesting that the gel is going on after brushing. Why wouldn't you put in the gel and then use the Denman brush? The gel helps hold the definition.
If my hair looked like yours just styling it without I would stick w that. For me my hair gets soooooo frizzy when I don’t brush. Still new but the brushing days are my only days I can go in public lol

They never explained in cosmetology school exactly what to do with these Denman brushes! Maybe I was absent that day lol.
It’s very tricky for me 😅
💟💟💟
You seem so sweet😀👍🏻 great video🌸
Thank you so much! 🥰
I can never do the back of my hair well either 😂
The mielle deep conditioner smells like lemons.
I have the mint one :)
@@JordanFaith 😻I need to buy it again I ran out of it 4 months ago. It's a really good product.
Is it just me or does this feel like wayyy too many products!?! Lol Think I’m just lazy. 🤣
Haha! I didn’t feel like it was too much, but I do enjoy layering 😊
@@JordanFaith also I can never find the best products for my wavy hair. Frizz is a major issue. Maybe cause I’m too lazy to layer. Lol
You do not have wavy hair, you have curly hair. Maybe 2C or 3A
Thanks for your comment! I have type 2 wavy hair :)
