When talent was required and people could still play instruments, sing and make music. This, this is why you learn to play an instrument, for this reason - exquisitely beautiful!
I was married in February 1983 and we never had a honeymoon we saved our money to go to the Hammersmith Odeon in london for the weekend of 22nd/23rd July to see this very concert just celebrated our 39th anniversary a couple of weeks ago still remember it like it was yesterday. ô¿ô
no doubt that Mark is one of the best guitarplayers, but he is up against some other heavy hitters.... Eric Clapton, Gary Moore, Joe walsh, jimmy paige, jimmie hendrix,Santana, Brian May .....and maybe a few more that eludes my mind right now
One of the best live performances ever. They establish this mellow groove right away then play off that with these intense runs. Everyone is great, and Knopfler's sound on the guitar is totally unique, like hearing Miles Davis play trumpet, you know right away who it is. Wish there were more bands like that today.
Fun fact: Mark Knopfler agreed to allow Weird Al to parody Money For Nothing if Mark could play the guitar on it. If you listed to Weird Al's Beverly Hillbillies, that's Mark on guitar.
Proper reaction. No interruption, pure appreciation of a timeless, world class performance from a bunch of British lads who just wanted to play good music and get on Top of the Pops.
If Mark Knopfler isn't on your list of top rock guitarists, I have to question either your criteria or your taste. Fast, clean, precise, rarely (if ever) a wasted note...and I just love how smoothly he turns those chordal corners.
That drummer is a monster. Mark Knopfler is one of the All time great rock guitarists. All these guys are masters of the craft. Pure, raw, unbridled, perfect Rock and Roll at it's very finest. And your reactions are special. It's like you can watch the music bursting through you. I watch a lot of reactions, and there are only a select few who truly appreciate and understand what they are hearing. You're one of those. You've won a subscriber tonight.
At about 13mins Mark turns to the drummer laughing at him, that was because the drummer had his dad at the show, it was the first time he saw Terry play Mark told him to smash it or words to that effect, and boy did he
I saw Mark Knopfler and Bob Dylan live 2011 in Oberhausen.....I'll never forget this evening...2 masters....one on the guitar the other in lyrics......both together in songs.....pure power ❤🎉
Always loved Dire Straits from when they first started. They're all brilliant musicians in their own right but put together and they became super brilliant musicians.
I was 29 I was in Hammersmith Oden the night of this concert will always be in my top three concerts of all time. I’m now 67 but play this concert on DVD regularly to remind myself how lucky I was to be there and watch this musical genius and his band. Love your reaction you absolutely got it in one x
Lucky you. I only saw Dire Straits live once at red rocks in Colorado, Although I’ve seen Mark Knopfler, another five or six times. My favorite musician. Dire straits concert was the best concert I ever went to.
I cant blame you for being almost speechless Sarah - that actually says so much. What I loved about your review is the fact that you didn't stop it every 10 seconds to make a comment.. perfect! I remember hearing this on the radio when it first came out in the late 70's and I have to confess I had tears rolling down my cheeks watching this... simply superb.
I remember the first time I heard this. Listening to my car radio the DJ said something like great song by a great new band and he was right. I was blown away and it wasn't the Alchemy Live version. I was blown away again when I heard that.
Only because they forgot to make a live album between "Alchemy" and "On the night"🤣🤣🤣🤣(Maybe because of the main stream attention of "Brothers in Arms" and the songs of that album. For "On the night", I think, the thing went too big, expectations too huge after six years)
Love Dire Straits & had their records. They are a great British rock band from the 70's-90's. Mark Knopfler is one of the best guitarists around. "Sultans Of Swing " is one of their most famous songs. But they have had so many hits including "Romeo & Juliet", "Private Investigations", "Twisting By The Pool", "Money For Nothing", "Walk Of Life", "Telegraph Road", "So Far Away", "Tunnel Of Love", "Brothers In Arms" etc. They don't have a bad song.
I guess we were spoiled growing up with all of this, judging from the "blown away" reactions of the younger generation discovering our "available everyday" music and watching them so enthralled with these masters from the past. I hope more people can share this music with their kids.
Definitely my favorite live performance of all time. Mark Knopfler is one of the best guitarists you'll ever see, and this is him having a grand ol' time. Terry Williams is tearing it to shreds on the drums, playing his heart out. I always thought he was really trying his hardest here to prove he belonged, as he was fairly new to the band after the founding drummer, Pick Withers, had left. Alan Clark is wonderful on keyboards, and John Ilsey (bassiset) and Hal Lindes (rhythm guitar) are perfect support to Mark's genius. Glad you enjoyed it so much.
Nah, Terrys dad was in the audience for the first time ever. Before this night he knew his son played drums in a band but didn’t know exactly what his job entailed. It was a great “look what I can do Dad!” moment.
@@SarahDengler For another great performance, check out Tunnel of Love from them live from Wembley or from Alchemy. The one from Wembley is 16 minutes long and it still feels too short.
Apparently, the song was written after Mark Knofler saw a band in a pub who were good, but never going to be big and they were called The Sultans of Swing. The song tells the story of their lives
a narration of an experience going to a club which includes a small audience to see a creole ("black" ?) jazz band who imagined themselves the sultans of swing. He talks about members of the band and audience.
No )) He said they were trying to play trad jazz but we're not so good. They struggled. He said that he smiled when at the end they said "we are the sultans of swing". There is an interview somewhere where he says so
Absolutely loved your reaction to this, such expressive facial reaction and happy dancing. You really enjoyed it whis is what us dire straits fans love in people.
This song is telling the story of every band in Britain's starting out on their journey playing in a Pub at weekends but this band shows how it can be taken to the next level & Beyond?? A Masterclass !!
This track is a journey. I allways used to listen to at full volume coming home late from work in tne mid 80s. One night a friend wanted a lift home. She was a very religious quiet spiritual person who spent much time meditating so I was reluctant to engage in my usual practice, but I did. At the end of the trip i said sorry about that, thats how I unwind. She replied " I loved it"
What an absolutely sublime reaction Sarah!!! Loved it!!! I have been watching this performance for nearly 40 years and it still blows me away. The lead guitarist is Mark Knopfler who also wrote all of their songs. Absolutely brilliant guitarist and wonderful storyteller. You might want to react to Telegraph Road from the same live concert (Alchemy). It absolutely showcases the fantastic musicianship of the whole band, and, for me, is the greatest rock song ever written. Keep up your wonderful reactions. Thank you so much and best wishes from the UK.
Lovely reaction Sarah. The concert was from the 1983 'Alchemy' gig at London's Hammersmith Odeon Theatre. All the band members were at the absolute height of their game at the time, with Mark Knopflers' genius on lead guitar and Terry Williams especially, on drums. Just absolutely awesome.
This is an awesome live performance. They were jammin'! For, what?, over 10 mins. The album version was about 6 mins, and the single (for radio play) was about 4 mins. Just frickin' awesome. I loved it! Thank you for your reaction.
THIS IS ONE OF THE BEST SONGS EVER RECORDED IN THE HISTORY OF MUSIC. I used to listen to it regularly on cassette back in Kinshasa, Zaire as a teenager many, many years ago. Great reaction, Sarah!
welcome to discovering Dire Straits for the first time. it's a rather unique place to find yourself. led by a musical virtuoso in Mark Knopfler, and surrounded by incredible musicians too. On Screen you have Mark Knopfler, John Illsley, Hal Lindes, Alan Clark, Terry Williams and Tommy Mandel. I can't wait for you to check out more Dire Straits and Mark Knopfler as a solo artist too. Remarkable band that will never see repeated again. Truly legendary. great reaction. thanks
Great reaction. This is one of the greatest performances ever from anyone. Mark Knopfler was untouchable during this time. You should react to Tunnel of Love from the Alchemy concert next.
If you can watch a live Dire Straits song watch it, Mark Knopfler is in the top 5 guitarists of all time, I loved watching your reaction. His solo songs are superb too.
Welcome to the soundtrack of my youth young lady. This is the best live performance of a hit single EVER!! I got to see them play this live at the "Brothers in Arms" Tour in Melbourne, Australia in February 1986 and the special guest guitarist on that night was Eric Clapton.
What a great reaction to a superb performance! I was there! July 1983, Hammersmith Odeon, London. I had just turned 18, I went with a couple of friends from work. I had long hair, since gone and you know its good when you're there, but now I see it again and it really was awesome! Terry Williams on the drums absolutely smashed it! Breakout hit for one of the best guitarists on the planet and his outstanding band. Mark Knopfler and the boys at their early best, and they only got better
Loved your reaction. I really feel I'm getting old, when so many people just discovered Dire Straits :) Mark Knopfler. The best guitarist in the world. I'm so glad I got to see them perform in Copenhagen in the 1980s. We were actually told by the venue to remain seated at all times during the concert. At the second song we were ALL off our seats and ON our seats dancing.... "slightly" encouraged by mr Knopfler himself. After all they couldn't throw all of us out. So we were up there dancing throughout the concert -everyone! And Sultans is the best Dire Straits song ever ♥️ Cheers Susan
Love your lovely reaction, many of us were lucky to see Dire Straits in the 80’s & personally after all the decades I still get excited listening to their music. I’m glad I kept all their original vinyl albums
They really are special telegraph road from this gig is even better and any performance of Romeo and Juliet is brilliant as well, I usually prefer the original recording of brothers in arms to live versions but it’s usually better to watch them live.
It's about the "pub band" music scene in South London - and despite the long Covid lockdowns, it's re-emerging and still doing its' thing. I'm 70 and still see 2 or 3 pub bands in any week. (My "local" is one such pub). Pubs that still do live music are one of the main reasons we have so much musical talent in the UK.
I LOVED this reaction! I grew up with this song and was playing air guitar in my bedroom every night 😂. To see the joy and amazement brings back all of the excitement of hearing this for the first time - thank you for that 😀🙏
Great fun watching your reaction Sarah. This is indeed a magical performance and we're so lucky that the concert was preserved on film. I have it on DVD. Would have given anything to be there.
Sheer pleasure and joy watching your reaction. Far by the Best Reaction seen here in UA-cam for Sultans of Swing! You really made happy for die hard fans of Dire Straits....that includes me too! Thank you.
As soon as I saw the title, I knew you were going to LOVE this song. Dire Straights is my favorite "later" band, meaning late 70s to 80's bands. My favorite bands are normally mid-60s to mid-70s, but Dire Straights right in there. They weren't Prog, but they had their own unique sound and masterful musicians. I just wanted to let you know there are so many great songs and performances that you haven't even heard of yet, I think here is a huge amount of musical joy in your future.

Dire Straits on fire! I think Mark Knopfler is one of the best guitar players ever. What an energy the drummer Terry Williams has!
And then there is the Bass player
He's got a gift that only comes from Above!! And the drummer plays tommy gun.

Mr Terrence Williams on those drums ladies and gentlemen!

I'm happy with you and for you. The only bad thing is we cannot listen to this for the first time again.
you ve just watched the most authentic artists and or humans ever
"Tunnel of Love" from this album is just as amazing and spellbinding
As soon as I saw the title, I knew you were going to LOVE this song. Dire Straights is my favorite "later" band, meaning late 70s to 80's bands. My favorite bands are normally mid-60s to mid-70s, but Dire Straights right in there. They weren't Prog, but they had their own unique sound and masterful musicians. I just wanted to let you know there are so many great songs and performances that you haven't even heard of yet, I think here is a huge amount of musical joy in your future.
