You didn't let it play out!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
That's what I was about to write! They get to the very end of the crescendo and the reaction stopped before Mark got to lift up his arms and clinch it!
Mark Knopfler has said that drummer Terry Williams was so psyched his Dad was in the audience that he started Sultans of Swing at a faster beat than they'd rehearsed. The band realized it right off and just rolled with it. The result was one of the most dynamic rock performances and concerts of all time. The musicianship on display here is simply astounding. 🤯
Hi, Not only did I see Dire Straights live, I was at this gig! I was just turned 18 and this was my second gig, the first was the Rolling Stones at Wembley, so the bar was very high! I thought this was normal and you don't appreciate how good it was until later, its still up there! It took a while to get going and "Sultans" really kicked things off, we were on the balcony just behind the people you could see clapping and the whole place was jumping, I thought the building would fall down! The tour was called Alchemy, because it was promoting the Love Over Gold album and it was pure gold! The line up was: Mark Knopfler, vocals and lead Guitar. John Illsley, Bass, Hal Lindes, guitar. Alan Clarke, Keys, Tommy Mandel, second keys (and dancing!) and the Wonderful Terry William on drums. We knew they were great musicians, but they blew us away with shear talent. The star for me was Terry Williams, you won't see better drumming live. Its fantastic that the best technology at the time was used to record it, so we can all enjoy it now. You have to react to Telegraph Road from this gig, its an epic masterpiece. Glad you enjoyed it❤❤
Richard hiiii!! That’s amazing you were actually at this show! Thank you for sharing the experience with us, and the names of the band members :) What an incredible show to witness LIVE 🔥🔥🔥❤️
Totally echo that- I was at two gigs on the Alchemy tour- no difference between the two, probably won’t ever see a tighter band on stage, phenomenal playing from everyone!
One piece of the puzzle I discovered about Mark is that he was a journalism major and worked as a reporter briefly after college, so he would have a notebook with him wherever he went apparently and used those notes to write lyrics later, as with this song. Talk about good songwriting - he wrote this just about an off-night at a London nightclub watching an unknown band he randomly encountered, and turned some mundane experience into a really compelling song.
Terry Williams absolutely nailed this concert. "I'm JUST the drummer"! Telegraph Road from the very same concert, near perfection, it'll blow your mind.
Telegraph Road, and Tunnel of Love, off the same Alchemy Live album. Amazing storytelling, guitar solos like you've never heard before, and performances to equal this one. If MK's musical genius and guitar playing appeal, you can begin the wonderful, joyous, mind blowing, multi-genre musical journey that covers better than 45 years of Mark's band, Dire Straits, his solo career, sound tracks to several movies, and collaborative works with other artists and guitar heroes. You won't be disappointed....and probably become a MK aficionado like the rest of us.
My kids are 13 and 15 they love dire straits so heartwarming to know the younger generations are listening to proper music. I came from work last week my daughters blaring out sultans of swing boom it blew my mind with pride
You can't go wrong picking songs from this concert. In fact if you do like This , I highly recommend buying the BluRay. It sounds even better off disc than UA-cam
Terry Williams was the drummer and was just a beast. He is now 76 and retired in Swansea Wales. Mark Knopfler is one of the best guitarists in the world and the king of finger pickers since Chet Atkins passed away. This is one of the best live rock performances, ever. I saw an interview with Mark and the interviewer said that he thought Mark was one of the best guitarists in the world and Mark jokingly said, "Hell, I can barely hold the thing." I never saw Dire Straits live, but I did see Paul McCartney and Wings and also Springsteen so that might have made up for it.
The studio version of this is one of the best songs for cruising. What I love about this clip is how much fun they're having. Making a living like that wouldn't suck.🤑🤑 Shout out to the production crew. The filmography of this LIVE concert is incredible.🤩🤩
I loved SOS the first time I heard it in 1978. For 40 years, I couldn't get enough of the studio version...then I saw this video! It's one of the best rock band performances I've ever seen...and, had it not been for a music reaction channel just like yours, I might never have discovered it!! Thank you for the curiosity and hard work it takes to share your first reactions to MANY performances, genres, and eras. I'm now subscribed and look forward to tagging along on your journey of musical discovery.
One of the greatest performances ever from anyone, Mark Knopfler, was untouchable during this time. Terry Williams on drums was on fire 🔥 The thing about Mark is he doesn't like fame and is a private person, so, he could walk down your local high street and be barely recognised, clearly a lot if people would recognise him though, he just likes it that way, for him it's about the music, not his ego.
Great reaction, Lijie, and very good points too! Next best thing by this band: "Telegraph Road", same concert (Alchemy Live). But please, oh p-l-e-a-s-e, this time around don't miss part of the fun: do watch the video until the very end! 😉
The '50s, '60s, and '70s were the Golden Era of R&R. This 25+ year time period was almost identical to Elvis' career...so it's fair to call it "the Elvis era."
Greetings from Canada. Did see them live- best music night of my life. Opening act: Stevie Ray Vaughan and Double Trouble. Peace, love and bellbottoms.
Fun Fact before Australia was discovered it was hypothesized that there was a large continent in the southern hemisphere that continent was called Terra Australis Incognita from the Latin for Unknown South Land
The live performance was a reinvention of their performance as opposed to the original release track which was dull to say the least, and which did not capture the magical skills of the band, like the drummer and guitar playing and keyboard too. This extended live performance sent the number way up to new heights. Whoever came up with this extended musical performance plan was a genius, and to also highlight the drummers absolute incredible skills too, he was effing amazing, and giving the drummer more attention, that is usually not the norm in music videos, was also a very clever move. The sound was absolutely amazing. How did I not know about this performance years ago. I can't believe I didn't see this before. I'm old enough to remember Dire Straits and I was never really a fan, but this performance was incredible. There is also a sadness attached to this band because of a major falling out between David and Mark.
Sultans of swing wembly '85 is even better. I never got to see Dire Straits but I have got to see Mark Knopfler 3 times. Once in Nashvill, TN and twice in Dayton, OH. All great shows
One of the most iconic Live sets, ever...and hey you scrub haters, she finished the fade out, like we would have in the 70s and 80s. , What did you miss,? ....... narcissists. Beautiful reaction young Lady! ❤😊
Great reaction, Lijie! Many will perhaps recommend you listen next to the live version of 'Telegraph Road' from the same concert, which, while excellent, isn't as good as the studio version of the same song. (One of the few occasions a live version isn't as good as the one done in the studio.) I'd post a link but UA-cam delete comments with links in them; nevertheless, the track is easy to find if you do a search. The thumbnail picture to look for is of an actual Telegraph Road with a lonely looking guy on a bicycle riding that road in the middle distance, hills in the far distant background. Then, may I suggest 'Tunnel of Love' live, Wembley Arena 1985, which has Mark playing a truly exquisite guitar solo?
Lizzie love! Watching you gals get off on Dire Straits is so good. I was around 27and I had this vinyl. Tunnel of Love, Romeo and Juliet. Good, Great band. Always on my play list.
As a complete opposite of these "rock songs", if you have the chance, listen to the finger picking, acoustic version of "Wild Theme" off MK's sound track to the movie, "Going Home", "Smoochin", and his stand alone, electric guitar version of "Going Home" with which MK often ended his Dire Strait's gigs. "Brothers in Arms" off the album of the same name is another classic in story telling lyrics, and a wailing, weeping guitar throughout. Ahhhh, so many wonderful aural pleasures still to be savoured!
Loved your review. You should check out 'Telegraph Road' from the same concert - amazing! As an aside - Kate Bush used the word 'incognito' in her song 'Babooshka' - so you will be in very good company.
This was Terry Williams first live performance in front of his father. Now you know why he was so "amped". Note Mark and the others looking back at him smiling. They were all jacked! Re: incognito. Most people wouldn't recognize Mark today. Please react to Ian Dury & The Blockheads - Hit Me With your Rhythm Stick, and Sex & Drugs and Rock and Roll live. Very different, and good!
The fairy tale that will not die. Terry's dad bought him his first drum kit when he was 13. Terry played with several popular local bands in his teens. He went on to join Dave Edmunds and Rockpile. While the band was touring the U.S. Terry flew his parents over to see them in concert and do some sightseeing and shopping. By the time Terry joined Dire Straits his dad and mum had seen him play many times.
I was luck to of been in the ordnance that night at the Oden in Hammersmith on the 23rd December 1985 I think it cost me £11.50 it cast me more in petrol to drive from Liverpool to London then back to Liverpool , I was warn out because I had been working that day and only just made it before they started Dire Straits have since always been one of my top bands but what a great night it was
I really liked your reaction to the preformance. It is one hell of a live performance - classic rock at its best. Sultans of Swing was on Dire Straights debut album. Just think, they never looked back. Mark Knolfer is one of the greatest guitarest ever. By the way, on does not always recognize his songwriting ability. His solo works are just as entertaining, just a little more refined. You are the 5th youtuber in the last 3 days that I have watched that have been blown away by the performance. I would like your reaction to The Who's Papa O'Riley at Shepperon Studios live performance. Thanks.
Hi, love your reaction and channel. Saw them live 6 times. I recommend the song Brothers In Arms from the concert called Dire Straits Live "On The Night" 1993. Every reactor I've seen said this performance had such an impact on them. Cheers all the best from Australia 👍🎸🎸🎸
There are many other excellent songs by this band but you would really enjoy Romeo and Juliet - Mark could make that guitar emote like no other and, while I appreciate his fast playing, I melt at the slower stuff. Tunnel of Love is my favorite by them but I recommend Romeo and Juliet for your next foray.
Sacrilege !!! You don't ever stop a music video until the final note is played !! Musicus Interruptus !!! Anyway, as most people in these comments section acknowledge the genius of the three guitar players Knopfler's Lead, Hal Lindes Rhythm and John Illsey's Bass - And of course Terry Williams phenomenal Drumming - It's worth mentioning that besides their regular Keyword Player Alan Clark on this 1983 Love Over Gold Tour, they added a guest Keyboardist Tommy Mandel for this Alcamy Live recording on July 22nd & July 23rd, which you can plainly see in the upper right hand corner, especially in the long shots, as he lets loose bouncing, dancing & rocking out like nobody's business : Definitely NOT trying to remain incognito ...
It is not the best version of Sultans of Swing, in my opinion, but they play with the same contagious energy that this band always have had and what always invites to dance... Dire Straits forever! Oh yeah! 😊
I enjoyed your reaction very much. Thank you. I think Alice Cooper used your word of the day in "No More Mr. Nice Guy". The line was "I went to church incognito".😊 Anyway, you did a great job. 🤟🤟😁❤️
Hi Lijie lovely to see you again, mark is probabaly my favorite plucking guitar player, and Gilmour is my favorite string bender. They are both masters of what they do. I liked your word game and yes you used it right. I have another artist for you toreact to, don t know if you ever heard any of his music, but i like him he has a great voice. His name is (Ray Wilson) he replaced Phil collins in Genesis swhen he left. The first song was when he was in Genesis, (calling all stations) then the rest are all his solo stuff all live. Take it slow, ought to be resting, makes me think of home, song for a friend, you can pick any one of them in any order all his songs are good not just these ones. Let me know what you think of him, he,s great! Bye for now love ya❤
Nice reaction until you went incognito on the ending. Deserves an explanation. Was it a bad editing mistake that's hard to fix? I suggest pinning an explanation to the top comment. :) Anyway great otherwise!
Neither Terry Williams' drum kit or technique are anything to sneeze at. So I'm not trying to take anything away from him when I say that Neil Peart's kit makes almost ANYONE else's look like a My First Drum Kit in comparison. lol! Check out any Rush video - Tom Sawyer, YYZ, Limelight....
Literally one second... 🙈 I did a followup reaction explaining this but the video is currently blocked and i'm hoping YT will make it public soon!! Grateful for you checking out my channel, Woody! 🙏
Don’t ever cut off the end of a video!

Yeah kinda weird to fade out the last three seconds
I‘m out.

Goosebump moment. Springsteen who? Too concerned with looks.
As. 70 year old English woman my friend and I saw them. We thought our hearts, brains and ears would explode. We could not speak for a week. Awesome
Wow that must have been an incredible show!! What an amazing experience to share with your friend ❤️

I think you will really like Telegraph road from this same concert
Telegraph Road live at the Alchemy gig, was amazing.
yeh, if it's not cut short...

He wrote Telegraph Road on the tourbus travelling from Chicago.
Why did you cut the last few seconds off????!!!!! Criminal!! 😠
Terry Williams absolutely nailed this concert. "I'm JUST the drummer"! Telegraph Road from the very same concert, near perfection, it'll blow your mind.
My daily watch of the best-ever version of "Sultans" thanks Dire Straits

to be that consistent, and accurate, on an electric guitar with fingers for a live performance is crazy.
@@stuartcollins82 Well, Hendrix used to play using his teeth. And behind his back.
[edit] Not both at once.
Greetings from Brazil. For Mark is about the music. So chill and effortless. He's not a show man but a musician.
Mark is Genius, check it out
Brothers in arms
Live on the night❤
Check out "Telegraph Road" from the same concert.

For anyone new to Dire Straits, check out Tunnel of Love. Mark Knopfler is another musical jewel we were gifted with.
Mark Knopfler doesn't get on a plane. He obviously has no need for commercial air travel. You have just watched him fly on his own.
Once after a show they asked Prince how it is to be the best guitar playrer in the world.
His answer : i dont know ask Mark Knopfler.....
That answer makes me respect Prince (and Mark) even more! Thank you for sharing this story with us ❤️
I think you need to react to "Telegraph road" from the same concert as well, it's possibly even better
Not possibly..IT IS better.... Telegraph Road is their pinnacle song ever. and this is the opinion of many not just mine.
You missed the big finish!! Unforgiveable.
nice reaction spoilt cause you omitted the end of the song.
what is really incredible is that Mark Knopfler is left handed but taught hismelf to play the guitar with his right hand.
Fun Fact before Australia was discovered it was hypothesized that there was a large continent in the southern hemisphere that continent was called Terra Australis Incognita from the Latin for Unknown South Land

You cut it off ONE SECOND TOO SOON!
Literally one second... 🙈 I did a followup reaction explaining this but the video is currently blocked and i'm hoping YT will make it public soon!! Grateful for you checking out my channel, Woody! 🙏

Yes!! I love that style of guitar playing because I also do not use a pic :) thanks for your comment 🙏❤️
The Drummer is Justin Trudeau
My thoughts exactly! Anyone who's ever seen pictures of a young Justin Trudeau, that's exactly what he used to look like! 🤣🤣🤣
I gave a 👎🏿 because you cut off the end
