@peterfallert4994 this is without question the greatest live performance of any rock song I've ever seen... Knopfler OMG... and the frkn drummer....wow
Yes, the guitars, the drummer and there were two guys playing multiple keyboards. Actually Mark Knopfler wrote the song and played lead guitar. Such an outstanding performance, but also enjoyment to the fullest to see them having fun as well. That drummer cooked.
Mark Knopfler is left handed and learned to play right handed so he didn't look different from other guitar players and he was self taught. He didn't read music, and he doesn't use a pick. He does what is known as the banjo roll. Uses the tips of his first 3 fingers and thumb to pluck the strings creating his unique sound.
This feels like a monumental moment in rock history. I can only imagine the energy in that place because it comes through the video. You feel the passion they have for what they're doing. Fabulous. I haven't smoked in 10 years, but when this was over, I felt like I needed one. What a journey. Great reaction.
Really enjoyed your reaction. Fun Fact: Not only is Mark a finger-plucking guitar virtuoso, but despite the fact that he is left handed, he is doing this with his right hand! Also, in addition to being a fabulous lead singer and musician, he was doing the song-writing and composition for the band as well (and pretty much every song has a great real-life story behind it too). The cherry on the sundae, they are pulling this off live while making it look so easy! "Telegraph Road" and "Once Upon a Time in the West" are two other breathtaking live performances from the same Alchemy Live concert that deserve attention.
I love the sheer happiness that exudes from this performance, which I was lucky enough and privileged enough to have seen live, but I have to tell you it is pure sacrilege to interrupt a Mark Knopfler guitar solo.
Quite simply one of the greatest performances ever from anyone. Mark Knopfler was in a put in Deptford, London and he witnessed a dixieland jazz band playing to an almost empty audience, at the end of the set they said "Thank you, good night, we are the Sultans of Swing " Mark found it amusing because that is exactly what they weren't, and he wrote the song. Genius.
The whole Alchemy concert was amazing, definitely worth seeing. "Telagraph Road" was pure perfection. Mark is a god on the guitar and always so calm and focused. Terry on the drums really gave it his all and the song comes alive through these drums. The whole band in this line-up was just perfect. And also excellent "Tunnel of Love" Live Wembley 85" The outro was just unbelievable
The lyrics of this song is an ode to the hundreds if not thousands of amateur jazz bands all over the UK. When I lived in SW London in the 1970s there was a band playing in every pub in my neighbourhood. Great entertainment of all genres of Jazz.
The song is about a little jazz band. Playing every gig to a nearly empty house (but Harry has a daytime job, so he's doin' alright). They call their little band "The Sultans of Swing".
Thank you for reacting to the best band ever. Top musicians individually, amazing team work, awesome interaction with the public and the geniality of Mark Knopfler not only as a guitar player but as the mastermind behind all the compositions for all instruments and the lyrics, for the band and solo. In this performance Terry and Mark are insane (it was the first time Terry's father was in the audience, he was killing it for Dad). Mark always got inspiration to write from daily life events he would witness or live, then he would write masterpieces enhancing every unique skill his band musicians owned and would deliver us a hell of a ride.
mark walked into a pub one day and a band called sultans of swing were playing but nobody was really paying much attention to them but they played on anyway.
No bigger compliment ever extended for this piece of art than quoting the immortal words of perhaps the greatest poet and lyricist of the 20th century, Sir MC Hammer: Can't touch this! 😄❤
*Pauses at 9 minutes into Sultans of Swing* "...A 10:46 song... with the best guitar riff thing I've ever heard, man." Strap in, my dude. That impressive record is going to stand for about 30 more seconds. Then, the song beats its own record with the thing Mark's wife, who shares his humility and sense of humour, dismissively calls "that li'l twiddly bit at the end." I'm so glad that the years of my life have basically overlapped with this man's global career. What a great thing his presence in the world of music has been.
The studio version of this is one of the best songs for cruising. It's nice that you enjoyed it so much. What I love about this clip is how much fun they're having. Making a living like that wouldn't suck.🤑🤑 Shout out to the production crew. The filmography of this LIVE concert is incredible.🤩
A standout performance ,everyone in sync and at the top of their game including the crowd, a masterful performance, terry williams giving the drums six nil for ten minutes straight, one of the best. I love your reaction, surprised yourself in the best possible way

Hi there. talking a about a band called the sultans of swing . Tells their story. "George he knows all those fancy chords " Harry, another one having a daytime job , going well, etc but when they're playing on night clubs "that's when they became the sultans of swing "😊 they became themselves
Personally I have a real love connection with DIER STRAITS. My husband and I connect our romance with these guys so it's very special to us. The Album Alchemy in particular. ❤
Two guys on keyboards. Both with five sets of keys at least. Telegraph Road -Alchemy Live is just as good. Telegraph Road is actually part of the US Highway system, US #24. It runs 70 miles north and south along the Detroit border. Dire Straits were touring and were traveling down Telegraph Road when Mark Knopfer asked the tour bus driver about the city. After their conversation, Mark wrote the song. While the song originated in Detroit, it could easily be adapted to any once thriving city that has fallen on hard times and is now known its blight and decay. I live in the western suburbs of Detroit. I used to have to travel Telegraph Road every day to get to Dearborn, MI to my auto supplier job. The commute was more stressful than my day doing accounting for Ford and Visteon. The drum kit walked off side stage after performance, and lit a cigarette. 😂❤
Hell, they carried Terry's drum kit out on a stretcher after this show. First time his father was in the audience to see him play live. 😂😂😂
@derklavierspieler7491 I didn't realize that even as old as I am. My understanding was this was his first time seeing him with DS.
