G'day George, Yeah mate, keeping it simple is the go. You don't need to spend massive dollars to set up the back of your 4WD. My new setup works really well for me. No going back to drawers. Thanks mate for your reply. Cheers Tim.
Simple, practical and effective - the whole point of a 4wd. I'm loving how people are getting back on board with basics.. way less to worry about going wrong or breaking. Like you I also removed my left rear swing arm as I couldn't justify the extra weight for the standard 4wd trips where a second spare just isn't necessary and also where you can run on board water so no point even running a jerry out the back either (keep as much weight between or on the axles) - potentially saving 60-80kg off the back! I think my next move is like you and installing a false floor set up where the 2nd row seats are so i can move even more of the heavy stuff in my rear drawers to there (tools etc).
G'day Nick, Thanks mate. This new setup is very simple, but also very affective. With the massive weight reduction, it is now amazing the difference the Patrol is to drive. Getting as much weight forward of the front wheels, changes the whole feel of how the car drives and handles. My video this Monday night is going into the rebuild in more detail. I have removed everything out, so you can see how i went about the built. Thanks again for your reply and feedback, i greatly appreciate it. Cheers Tim.
At least you have shown us a low cost way of doing it, unlike some of the others out there, who just want you to empty your bank account down at the local 4wd store who allegedly sponsor them. Thanks Tim.
Makes a lot of sense, the vehicles we had in our squadron were fitted out with the standard accessories and then packed with what was required for each task. KISS and multi-purpose. 👍
Used this kinda setup with a little trolley from the start(small budget off coarse) and move with the shade around the trees or what ever, always picking the best shade or sunny spot even far from where my vehicle are. Getting to and away from the car the whole time bogs freedom. Drawers systems just a space gobbler and all heavy stuff elevated 30 cm and more. Looking forward how your patrol is going to handle. Thanks, Tim for a well illustrated video.
Mate, it is amazing how different it now drives. Im really looking forward to getting it out in the bush. Massive changes for huge gains. Thanks mate, i do appreciate your reply and feedback. Cheers Tim.
Nice weight and money saving idea. InI use six Oats Storage plastic drawers from Bunnings. Also, I just bought four Frontrunner Wolf pack storage boxes, but haven't yet used them.
Well done Tim. You will have such a better vehicle to tour in, less wear and tear, better fuel range, tyre life increase, it just goes on and on with all that extra weight removed . It will be interesting to hear how much different the Patrol is after your next trip. Thanks.
G'day Deane, Thanks mate. The Patrol is soooo different to drive now Lol I will talk about this in one of my Wednesday night live chats. Its amazing how much i have been able to take out of unwanted weight. Thanks mate for your reply. Cheers Tim.
Great video Tim. Really appreciate how you represent a normal bloke doing stuff on a budget. I’m in the middle of re doing the setup on my Isuzu MU-X and it’s all pretty budget and DIY. Bloody good on ya 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
G'day Mike, Thanks heaps mate for your feedback. Im glad that the video has maybe given you some ideas to fit out the back of your MU-X. Simple setups but make them effective is the go. Cheers Tim.
Awesome work Tim. Lighter, simpler and a fresh start. It's freaky how similar your change is to what I've done few months ago. I ditched the Kings draws. 75kg gone there and went to the Expedition tubs. 2 of them in the rear with a simple false floor and fridge. Now when NOT going away, it's a matter of putting the boxes in the garage. Lots of space gained and no weight to carry around the city. I also installed the Horizon Touring GU storage boxes. Which make use of the cavity in the rear of the Patrol. Otherwise wasted space is now room for a battery and/or other bits and pieces. Look them up, great bit of kit mate. Cheers!
G'day mate, Thats unreal you have done a setup very similar to what i have put together. It's very simple and works really well. Dropping a stack of weight has made a massive difference. I'll check that gear out you have mentioned. Thanks heaps for your feedback, i do appreciate it. Cheers Tim.
This is very refreshing to hear/see! I just got my old 90's Prado and was thinking of kitting it out like "proper" 4WD but thought there must be an easier, cheaper way. Seems like motorbikes less weight is more fun!
G'day mate, Less weight is the go. So much less stress on the car both on and off the road. My new setup is a simple but very affective and it sure hasn't cost thousands of $$$ like a lot of the builds that you will see on social media. Thanks mate for your reply. Cheers Tim.
@@timbates4wdadventures Love your channel, showing us where us mere mortals can go to with our basic cars, not everyone wants rock crawling and breaking diffs most just want to go out and enjoy the beautiful country
@@FirstLightAdv thanks mate. You sure don't need to spend massive amounts of $$$ to go and camp by a beautiful mountain stream and drive a few tracks. Generally the more you spend, means more weight. Simple setup if you can is the go.
Love this... Lateral thinking to the way you want. did the same to my 200 series. Middle and back seats out but with 1200mm alloy drawers in the rear. Then a simple frame with a ply cover at same height so its one level when its a daily driver. I have it set out with fridge and microwave (yes I don't cook extravaganzas like you) and this enables me to sleep down the other side inside the car. I'm out of the elements, good ventilation and off the ground. I also don't do swags or RTT's as I have only 1 leg... All good..... I put on a Darche 270d awning as it is easy for me to setup and pack up (unlike a swag or a RTT. Weight distributed evenly with AGM battery and storage etc Yes very weight conscious and wanted to setup my way.. Awesome stuff. If there is a youtube meet and greet happy to come down as the comments on your videos from viewers makes for good thought. Cheers Mick
G'day mate, Sounds like you have a top setup mate. Thats the go to get it setup so it works for you. See how things go with the current times about another catch up. The last one i did was a top trip. Thanks mate for your reply. Cheers Tim.
Good choice with the 134's Tim. I have a Troopy camper and I use the Expedition 134 box as a step. It's the first thing that comes out when you set up camp. Very light weight and strong enough to stand on. It stores high priority quick access lightweight stuff.
Gday mate, Yeah, spot on. The 134 boxes are top notch mate. They’ll come in very handy for many things other than carrying my camp gear. Thanks for your feedback mate. Cheers Tim.
For awhile I was using a filing cabinet in the back of my GU which worked well as it was $10 2nd hand, sturdy, lockable, fit perfectly next to the fridge and was removable. But I then bought a JKU as well and it didn’t fit in that, so now I use Wolf Packs and canvas bags. Keeps the weight down, everything has its place and they easily be swapped between vehicles, is super light weight and can be stored in the shed when not in use
G'day Graham, Thats a great idea with a light weight filing cabinet. The Wolf Pack boxes are great quality as well. I did look at those. Its handy being able to take everything out and as you say, its quite easy to move from one car to another. Weight is key mate. Thanks a lot for your reply and feedback. Cheers Tim.
Boxes like that are great! It’s awesome in an emergency too for instance if the car was to catch fire you can pull your food/ water and supplies out quickly if you couldn’t save the car. Much easier in that respect than drawers and could possibly save your life too !
Very tidy and well organised, this is similar to my own setup which I’ve always been happy with, and one of the main reasons is how versatile it is, different trips sometimes need a change in needs and with this anything will go. I have always “ fancied” a drawer system but now you have confirmed that for me I have a good system already. This is only the second video I have viewed of yours and I have really enjoyed it, thank you. I live in the UK and contrary to what some have said there is some excellent Overlanding/exploring to be enjoyed in Uk and Europe. however at the moment no one is going anywhere because of the dreaded Lurgi lockdown ( Lurgi, from 1950s radio show, The Goons) I wish you well and good travels,
G'day Billy, Thanks heaps mate for dropping in from the UK. I hope you are going ok during these testing times. The boxes i now have, is a great setup simple and easy. It would be great to see other parts of the world with a 4wd. You stay safe mate and thanks for checking out the videos on my channel. Cheers Tim.
Hi mate, I watch some UA-cam bushcraft type channels from over there such as Kent Survival and Simon a Bloke in the Woods. Go to say that you guys seem to have some seriously nice lightweight gear over there that I seem to struggle to find over here. Smaller population I guess. Second part of a setup like this would be to then get the lightweight gear to go with it. Hope you get let out soon mate and all goes well. Our guys in Victoria are starting to be released now so hopefully they can get out and about. Stay well.
Not bad mate, great to see some original thinking. You are on the money about weight reduction and weight distribution. Just talking to my friend tonight about drawers for his gu. Unfortunately he will have to keep the back seats in but looking at getting the lightest drawers and ensuring the weight is down low and in the middle. Cheers mate.
G'day David, Yeah weight distribution has made a big difference and getting a lot of unwanted weight out has changed how the Patrol drives big time. Thanks mate for your reply. Cheers Tim.
Yeah It’s a great set up I hate drawers I use Tactix boxes in the tub of my Ranger Take all my gear everywhere I have a canopy Fridge and dual battery also in the tub 3 x 20 L jerry cans at the back of the tub.....fuel and/or water Also toilet Rear seats removed ....that’s where we carry all sleeping gear, cameras, laptops, clothes etc etc Awning on side...Oztent Taglong with mesh room Chairs, tent etc on roof rack in a cargo bag SIMPSON DESERT setup Hopefully next year when we escape Victoria I’ll hit the desert again Been up around MURRAY SUNSET NP & OUTBACK NSW with this setup this year Also around Tassie in January Easy Been trying different setups for 40 years Camper trailers, caravans etc Old school camping is still the best My lovely wife and I are happy cooking over an open fire and enjoying the bush Less is best Thanks for the videos Cheers mate 👍 Bob
Great set up. I'm a fan of plastic tubs, it's what I use in my ute. Canopy and drawer systems really reduce the usefulness of your vehicle for anything other than touring
Awesome buddy, looking good 👍👍 I lov watching people’s diy videos, I did my rear duel cab set up, saved money & a sense of pride knowing I did it myself, not professional but does me 👍👍👍keep up the great videos
G'day Louis, Thats it mate. DIY is great if you can build your own. Set it up so it works for you, and thats all you need. Thanks mate for your reply and feedback. Cheers Tim.
G'day mate, That could work by moving the water storage further forward to balance things up better. But for now, I'll leave the jerry cans where they are. Thanks for your feedback mate. Cheers Tim
@@timbates4wdadventures These videos have helped me rethink my setup. As appealing as having lots of draws are for convivence, your setup with tubs are the huge weight savings is so important.
@@HardstylePete yeah that’s why I took my drawers out and went back to tubs. All based around saving weight and taking them out when I get home. Thanks for your reply mate. Cheers Tim
Tim I've never been so upset and disappointed with you as I am right now! Right when I thought I've got my set up perfectly sorted you come along and give me soooo many new ideas 😏 Keep up the great work mate 🍻
Hahah, Sorry mate. Im sure what ever setup you have will be great and work well for you. Thanks mate for your feedback, i do appreciate it. Cheers Tim.
Yes, I have done a similar thing to my 62 series Sahara, (K.I.S.S- KEEP IT SIMPLE STUPID!) already years ago, always served me well and keeping the weight down, I also made a bed for the swag, for those wet, cold and horrible nights (getting old I guess? Lol), used to be a double but traveling alone now so single will do just fine. Just done a 7000km trip up north and back, doing it again in a few weeks, can't wait!
G'day mate, Sounds like a great simple setup that you have that works well for you. Keeping it simple is the go for sure. You have a top trip when you head out again. Cheers Tim.
great set up Tim i have just changed my ranger tub to flat tray and canopy what a difference . so much more room and so excisable , i love watching your channel mate from 1 brickie to another no pigs in the wall there . keep up the great work i can not wait to get out and about .oh and use my trowel as a spachelor
G'day Jason, Thats the go mate. Get your Ranger setup to suit how you want it. Simple setup works a treat. Good Ol pig in a wall, seen a few of those over my time. I think we have all put one in a wall at some stage. Lol The good ol Marshalltown trowel / egg flip works a treat mate. Lol Thanks for your reply and feedback on the channel, i do appreciate it. Cheers Tim.
Hey Tim. Much anticipated vid mate. I have done a similar set up in my patrol to what you have done except I made a false floor about the same hight as the centre console and I can put my boxes comfortably under the floor from the passenger doors. I swapped out the 40 ltr chest fridge for a 40 ltr upright Engel that fits perfectly in the left hand passenger door. And still have a tone of space to roll the swag out and sleep on top of the false floor or on longer trips store extra gear. Hope to see you on the tracks one day. Keep up the great work 👍
G'day Jamie, Yeah cool mate. I have been looking at those upright fridges. I've a mate with one, and he loves it. Sounds like you have a top setup also mate that works well for you. Fair chance i'll see you out on the tracks some day for sure. Thanks for your reply mate. Cheers Tim.
Totally awesome set up Tim...I'm also amazed how quick you were able to do the changes, one minute drawers and back seat, the next tubs and fridge installed...wish I could get stuff done that fast..lol
G'day mate, I took about three weeks to get it all done from taking the seats out and getting that passed. To now the finished project. Thanks heaps mate for your feedback, i do appreciate it. Cheers Tim.
well mate now restrictions are being lifted im sure your absolutely pumped to hit the tracks, cant wait for the new wave of vids, honestly mate i do envy you a bit you have a beast rig, beautiful country to explore, and id love to do solo camping but not sure the wife will let me
Yeah mate, its all go again for Victoria. Travel is back on full time. Lol So much to see in Australia, thats for sure. Work on that solo trip mate, its unreal. Cheers Tim.
Nice tim alot more storage for you and as long as you like it that's what counts your gu is a beast, lm wanting to do something similar to my gu thanks again for your videos m8 very informative happy trails bud
G'day Anton, Thanks mate, and thats key to setup the inside of your 4WD thats going to suit and work for you. I appreciate your reply and feedback mate. Cheers Tim.
G'day mate, Yeah it's gone on a much needed diet, thats for sure. Weight savings are amazing. Top quality plastic tubs mate and all Aussie made. Thanks heaps mate for your reply. Cheers Tim.
Yeah cool. It's not for everyone, but it sure does give a few other options to think about when decking out the back of your 4WD. Thanks for your reply and and glad you found the video helpful. Cheers Tim.
Gday Tim, Just binge watching from across the ditch. Like your setup mate. Top marks. Only change I'd make is do away with the pie warmer, and use my fire toasty sandwich maker instead. But it's all good. Take care mate and stay safe. Cheers.
Gday Bryan, Ahh cool mate. Thanks for dropping in on my videos. Yeah mate, it’s simple setup but it works. Couldn’t ditch the pie warmer mate. Lol it’s way handy. Thanks for your reply and feedback mate. Cheers Tim.
Great job Batesy, I like what you have done. I’m currently setting up my Prado at the moment and am very aware of my GVM and weight distribution. Getting the weight between the axels is a key factor. Certainly draw systems add a lot of weight. I’m looking at a water tank that goes in the rear footwell. Putting your fridge in the 2nd row seat area frees up space that creates options. Thanks for sharing.
G'day Steve, Yeah it pays to not rush in a fit out your 4WD. My new setup is very simple with so many advantages over drawers. Weight was a major factor and where i placed some of those heavy items in the setup i have now. For the first time, the Patrol now comes in under GVM which is a game changer. Thanks mate for your reply. Cheers Tim.
Hi Tim, recently purchased my first 4x4 and I appreciate seeing the alternate argument for drawer systems. I was seriously considering drawers but the benefits of not fitting them seem just as good as having them in
G'day Alex, Yeah, it's great to see other options and then way up which of those options that you can see working for you. Thanks a lot for your reply and feedback mate. Cheers Tim.
I use cordless tool system boxes, most of them have cool cordless accessories which work really well whilst out and about, plus the boxes are tough and waterproof
Great set up Tim simple effective keeps the weight down but if you carry family you still need the rear seat and combo of draws and boxes those boxes look like they will go the distance I have the same in my Ute for solo trips but draws in the cruiser for family trips great to see a professional looking job on a budget gives us all food for thought well done Mate 👍🏻
G'day Peter, Yeah the weight thats come out has made a massive difference mate. It's a simple setup now that will work really well going forward. You don't need to spend big bucks to get out in the. bush. My setup isn't for everyone, specially as you say if you have families. But some of what i have done might still work. Thanks heaps for your reply mate. Cheers Tim.
Lovely setup now mate! I dunno I could do without the convenience of drawers vs the plastic tubs . . . . Love the idea of weightloss tho 👍👌🤔 I used to have the same Jerry can setup for water storage but have moved to a frootwell tank - 40L right behind the front seats is a nice place for that weight rather than up that high. I can stack a row of 4 X 10L boxes of spring water on top so it's a really easy to carry 80L. The tank sits snugly between the front seats and the box I made to replace the 2nd row seats which is fixed in place by the original seat bolts and bolted to the drawers so it's rock solid and works a treat 👌👍 Keep up the great vids mate 😄
G'day Ben, Sounds like a top setup that you have worked out for your rig. Thats the go, as long as it works for you, thats the main thing mate. Good distribution of weight that you have looked at with your setup. Balances out nicely. Thanks mate for your feedback, i greatly appreciate it. Cheers Tim.

Bloody mint mate! You done well there, Awesome set up 👍🏻 I’ve gone with the boxes too inside back of my canopy, instead of draws! Was Easier to take it out n have everything accessible on the ground. Might have to hit that mob up tho n grab a couple of them boxes, they look alright
G'day Sean, Thats it mate. Boxes have a lot of advantages thats for sure. Taking them out when you get home simple and easy is a big one. Check out those boxes mate, top notch gear. Made by Open Sky Touring. Thanks heaps mate for your feedback. Cheers Tim.
Lovely video. Now I’m all conflicted as I’m saving up for a set of Drifta drawers with the low fridge slide etc. I like the look of those boxes. Much nicer than the cheap pair of Bunnings tubs I use on trips. They slip around and the lids crack etc. Would really love to see how you set up that barrier. I thought it was a purpose bought one but was surprised to hear it’s a bit of security door screen. Thanks Tim. Love the videos. Would love to see the high country. Not much of that over here in Perth. Cheers. Paul.
G'day Paul, My new setup isn't for everyone. But it sure will work well for what i ant from it. A lot of people have asked me about seeing the setup with out any gear in it. So this week i will make a detailed video of how i went about building what i have and what i used. That video will be next Monday night mate. I hope things are going well for you over in Perth. Cheers Tim.
Looks good mate I carry an 80 litre water bladder across my rear foot well two if I need water for panning gold in a dry spot. They work well and keep the centre of gravity down. Never wanted the weight of draws as that's pretty much the same as my second bag of water. With the weight in the wrong place.. Cheers Bruce
I'd love to have some modular boxes that had drawers built into them. That would be perfect for my Patrol. Slide the drawers out when they are stacked up in the car, or lift the lid off when they are out of the car by the tent, cooking area, etc.
G'day mate, Yeah it's hard finding that perfect setup for our 4WD's. Just need to find a setup that is simple enough, and works at the same time. Thank for your reply mate. Cheers Tim.
Really fabulous to see this downsize revamp. Do you have a simple chart of how much weight was lost in total, by trimming back item by item, with a total kilo tally? That would be so useful as a model to others!
This is exactly the reasoning I was using setting up my vehicle. I saw all those channels with 4wd's that had gear coming out of the wazoo and wasn't convinced that it was the way to go tbh. Couldn't get over the weight and financial cost of it all. The other thing you could do is make a bit of a lightweight top to go on the top of a box so you could stack a couple up and use them as a bit of a table if needed. Also you may do a daytrip and not need all the gear so just take one or two as needed.
Yeah mate, im hearing you. So many people take way too much gear. Less is best and only take what you need. Going light weight is the go. Thanks mate for your feedback, i greatly appreciate it. Cheers Tim.
Funny I’ve been using the cargo box system for a while but have been wanting to upgrade to a drawer system. Your weight saving approach makes me reconsider that thought. I’ll be interested to hear more about how you go with this setup once you’ve gone out a couple of times (especially not having a fridge slide any longer as that’s one of my main motives for wanting a drawer system).
G'day mate, The weight saving is off the planet. Im going to do a live chat video about this. It's massive the difference mate. This setup will work very well. Simple and easy mate. Thanks a lot for your reply and feedback. Cheers Tim.
Great video, Tim. Any chance at a closer look on how you made/fit the floor, and the cargo barrier? I'm about to buy a 2002 Patrol, and I'm looking at removing the middle row, so looking for options.
G'day mate, I already have had a number of people asking the same things you have. I will get a close up detailed video made and ready for next Monday night. Thanks heaps mate for your reply. Cheers Tim.
I think simplicity is best. There are plenty of accessory retailers happy to sell you gear to overload your truck. I think your setup much depends on your stage of life and the places you want to go. Eg a family with young kids have more weight and less room to use than a retired couple. For me, a dual cab with a good tray, canopy and 12v system is the bones of an allround efficient solution.
G'day Paul, Yeah spot on mate. Families travelling is difficult to keep the weight at a min. What ever setup you have, has to suit your camping needs. Thanks mate for your feedback. Cheers Tim
Obvious pro is weight saving but it's not without it's con's such as losing seating space and ease of access to things in a hurry. It'll be interesting to see your thoughts on it after a few trips. As usual, informative video.
G'day mate, Mate, taking the seats out would be one of the best things about the changes i have made. I sure don't need back seats anymore and haven't needed them for years. As for liking the rest of the setup, it will work a treat for me. Theres no way im going back to drawers and throwing and extra 80kgs min back in before any gear goes in. Thanks for your feedback and reply. Cheers Tim.
Nice Tim. Looks great. We use ex military communications boxes, one for the kitchen, one for the recovery and camp admin, ropes, hootchies, lantern, radio, med kit, batteries. The a folding table and chairs, flat fold out cast iron cook plate and grill, water jerry and two swags. All in the back of the Pajero. Never liked those pull out draws, pain in the arse.
Sounds a great set up mate. Thats one of the next items im looking into. Is smaller fold away camp chairs and a table. Boxes are very handy mate as you are also finding out. Thanks for your reply and feedback mate. Cheers Tim.
@@landcruisertoyota3980 Thats it mate. It's fine if people have big budgets in mind. But, goes to show that you can do a very simple and effective setup for little cost.
Hey Tim, those boxes are a great idea but, I saw them in Tent World today and they are $160 each and that is $640 for four plastic boxes. I'm all for supporting Aussie businesses but at that cost I'd stick with Bunnings specials...
G'day mate, Thats cool mate. You don't necessarily need to use the same boxes that i have. The concept is more the message and reducing weight from your 4WD. Thanks for your feedback mate. Cheers Tim.
Gday Paul, Mate the boxes are working really well for since taking my heavy drawers out. You could get all the same colours and label them, if you find that would work better for you. The different coloured lids works well for me with knowing what’s in them. I’ve now made use of the inside of the lids. I’ve stored plates, knives, forks etc. nice and easy to get when I need them. Thanks mate. Cheers Tim.
Hi Tim, great setup. I am sure you spent a lot of time in planning this setup. It looks so good. The best thing is being able to remove the boxes for day to day driving. The fridge in the middle is a great option especially for my dual cab ute. It out of the dust, locked up and secure . Did or do you need any paperwork from Vic roads to prove that it is now a 2 seater ? The buddy oven always gets a great rap, best I get one. All the best thanks for showing the update Tim.
G'day Peter, Yeah mate i started out with a rough plan, but a i did make a number of changes as the build went on. I have a video on my channel about what i went through to take the seats out. Mine has been inspected and approved by Vic Roads. It is now a registered two seater Patrol. The ovens are great mate. So handy for so many meals. Thanks mate for your feedback. Cheers Tim.
@@Peter-jm7zt Thats all good mate. Ask any questions that you have. I do have a couple of winch topic videos on the channel. Did you have something specific about winches you wanted to find out?

Hi Tim, been binging on your videos for a while. Could you please go a bit more detail like how you secure the boxes. In the thumbmail i see a hook, was that drilled and then bolted? Appreciate if you will. From a newbie in WA.
G'day mate, The hooks i used are M10 eye bolts. I got those from Bunnings. They screwed into to threaded holes where the back dickie seats were bolted down. 'Hope that helps mate. Thanks for dropping in from WA. Cheers Tim.
I get the weight saving, but I think draws are so much easier, you don't have to take the top box out to get to the bottom one. I use plastic boxes now and there a PITA. Not to mention the storage space in the wings to keep things away rather than having them in the boxes.
G'day mate, im hearing you big time. But when my Patrol was over 300kgs from GVM before i started, i had to do something badly. So, this is now my setup and no turning back. Thanks for your reply mate. Cheers Tim.
Looks great Tim, I to have just changed the back of my 4B to reduce weight and chuck out stuff that is unnecessary.. As the Bush Tuckerman always said ..Keep It Simple Stupid .
Gday Tim, is you aux battery under the bonnet? Looking at putting an inverter in my 105 and sussing what size wiring to run from the engine bay to the cargo area
Gday mate, Yes it is mate. Both my start and second batteries are under the bonnet. I’m not sure on wiring size, I had an auto elect do all the wiring for me. Thanks for your reply mate Cheers Tim
@@timbates4wdadventures thought so. Such a tidy set up now. Been watching a lot of your videos throughout lockdown and getting lots of cooking ideas. Keep up the ripper work. Might see you out and about :)
great to see you have gone away from the usual paradigm that is the 'RV' and 4wd scene where weight is not considered and its mostly about the 'look'. all of the drawer systems could be made much lighter than they are, but your system is more adaptable.
G'day mate, The main reason for this redesign is based on weight reduction, and i have dropped a heap of weight. I'll talk about this in a live chat in the next few weeks. Thanks a lot mate for your reply. Cheers Tim.
Went the same route in the Colorado; also means I can use the tray for Ute things when needed. Also cost is another thing - Tactix boxes from Bunnings were about 1/10th the cost of a draw set.
Yeah spot on mate. Cost and weight savings for plastic storage boxes play massive benefits. Plus when i take the boxes out, i can now use the back for tip runs and things like that. Thanks mate for your reply. Cheers Tim.
G'day Glenn, They are Aussie made mate. They are ProQuip jerry cans. I bought these from Super Cheap Auto. About $40 i think they were each. No i don't have any power to run the water flow. It's just gravity fed mate. Thanks for your reply mate. Cheers Tim.
I like the weight saving but can I be honest with you mate? I reckon you'll miss the drawers. I used to use boxes, I found them to be a PITA. I then went to drawers from Drifta and haven't looked back.
G'day mate, I cant see that happening for the gear that i have in them. The weight savings are massive, so no going back. The drawers that i made were similar to Drifta design. Thanks mate for your reply and feedback. Cheers Tim.
Nice! Did similar mods to back seats myself but went with multi levels using angle brackets great for all those bulky but light items and everything bolted to seat mounts. Can you where you got your rear lights? They look great and with the kaymar bar I always thought the lights were way too small so am looking to change. Cheers
Gday Dave, Making those changes has made a huge difference to how I use my Patrol for camping. The seats coming out are a game changer. The rear lights on my rear bar are heaps bigger than the standard lights that come in the rear bar. These are screwed over the top of the standard lights after they were removed. Thanks for your reply mate. Cheers Tim.
@@davestickland2880 no worries mate. The auto elec that wired them up about 10 years ago go them for me. But, they are the same lights you see on the backs of caravans. The reverse light is unreal. Cheers Tim.
Great job on the weight removal and tubs instead of drawers. I'm surprised that there aren't plastic drawers around (haven't seen any yet), where you still get the convenience of drawers but with the weight savings over metal or wood. I think plastic would be quite strong as we can get plastic bull bars, fuel tanks, jerry cans, and even boats.
Yeah spot on Wayne. It is a wonder that a drawer system hasn't been made from a tough plastic. The weight savings are unreal. Thanks mate for your reply and feedback. Cheers Tim.
Its a good thought Wayne about the plastic draws, but one thing that got my attention as Tim was talking about the plastic tubs was that you can pick up the tubs and move them out - either when at home or when you are camping and need a tub a distance from the vehicle. Draws tether you to your vehicle.
@@MiniLuv-1984 thats true, in my MU-X I've got 1 drawer and the fridge slide next to it. I keep what I see as the essentials in the drawer, basic tools, jack, gloves, tyre repair kit etc. My camping gear and recovery gear is already in plastic tubs that I put in the car when I'm going offroad or camping. Having a ingle plastic drawer would save a bit of weight over the one I have.
I have seen some small ones that Bunnings have used in a couple of 4wd's on other channels. They stack together and have a couple of different designs. Not going to do what big tubs do but handy for some food, spices and stuff like that. I can never seem to find them on the website but I have seen them in store.
Tim, isn't there a great deal of rattle once you leave the bitumen. Looks as if components of that system would clutter around driving you crazy, well maybe not you, but I could deal with the rattles. Curious?
Nice and simple. There are a lot of over weight, over complicated and over priced rigs out there. Out of interest, any reason you don't use the insulated cover on the Engel?
G'day mate, Yeah there sure is a lot of over weighted 4WD's on the road. This setup is simple and has taken a stack of weight out of the back. I dont use the fridge case any more, because i reckon it was getting warmer with it on. I dont see the fridge working any better or worse with or without the cover. I reckon it allows the fridge to breath better. Thanks mate for your reply and feedback. Cheers Tim.
The best thing about plastic boxes is it gives you a great place to put all the stickers you collect in your travels.
Hahah
Sure does mate. Heaps of realestate for the travel stickers.
Cheers Tim.
Keeping very simple effective usable and not over the top. Your set up is way better than those guys getting around with their 100k machines.
G'day George,
Yeah mate, keeping it simple is the go.
G'day Nick,
Thanks mate.
Thanks Tim.
G'day mate,
Thats for sure, mine is a simple setup and sure doesn't cost a bomb to deck it out.
Thanks mate for your reply.
Cheers Tim.
You're right...
Makes a lot of sense, the vehicles we had in our squadron were fitted out with the standard accessories and then packed with what was required for each task. KISS and multi-purpose. 👍
G'day mate,
Yeah keep it simple is a great way to go if you can make it work for you.
Cheers Tim.
The "KISS" principle Tim
Great work 👍👍👍
Yeah mate.
It works a treat.
Cheers Tim.
Cheers Tim.
Great use of the Expedition134 boxes! Love these boxes.
Thanks mate,
Yes, they are top notch quality boxes, and a great couple of blokes running the business.
Thanks for your reply.
Cheers Tim.
Mate this is giving me some ideas for my GU. Thanks for sharing.
Yeah cool mate.
It sure works well for my setup.
Im glad it's given you a few ideas.
Thanks for your reply.
Cheers Tim.
Nice weight and money saving idea.
InI use six Oats Storage plastic drawers from Bunnings. Also, I just bought four Frontrunner Wolf pack storage boxes, but haven't yet used them.
G'day mate,
The weight savings is unreal.
The Front Runner boxes are good gear as well mate.
Thanks mate for your reply.
Cheers Tim.
Well done Tim. You will have such a better vehicle to tour in, less wear and tear, better fuel range, tyre life increase, it just goes on and on with all that extra weight removed . It will be interesting to hear how much different the Patrol is after your next trip. Thanks.
G'day Deane,
Thanks mate. The Patrol is soooo different to drive now Lol
I will talk about this in one of my Wednesday night live chats.
G'day Mike,
Thanks heaps mate for your feedback.
Im glad that the video has maybe given you some ideas to fit out the back of your MU-X.
Simple setups but make them effective is the go.
Cheers Tim.
Well done Tim stay safe.
Thanks mate.
Cheers!
G'day mate,
Thats unreal you have done a setup very similar to what i have put together.
It's very simple and works really well.
Dropping a stack of weight has made a massive difference.
I'll check that gear out you have mentioned.
Thanks heaps for your feedback, i do appreciate it.
Cheers Tim.
Love it. Versatile, no big price tag and very effective. Well done Tim and thanks for sharing the knowledge.

G'day Greg,
Yah mate, simple works really well. Plenty of extra $$$ for a few more beers on the first trip Lol
Thanks mate for your reply.

This is very refreshing to hear/see! I just got my old 90's Prado and was thinking of kitting it out like "proper" 4WD but thought there must be an easier, cheaper way. Seems like motorbikes less weight is more fun!
G'day mate,
Less weight is the go.
Cheers Mick
G'day mate,
Sounds like you have a top setup mate.
Gday mate,
Yeah, spot on.
G'day Graham,
Thats a great idea with a light weight filing cabinet.
Thats it mate.
That is a great point that you make.
Thanks for your feedback mate.
Cheers Tim.
I live in the UK and contrary to what some have said there is some excellent Overlanding/exploring to be enjoyed in Uk and Europe. however at the moment no one is going anywhere because of the dreaded Lurgi lockdown ( Lurgi, from 1950s radio show, The Goons) I wish you well and good travels,
G'day Billy,
Thanks heaps mate for dropping in from the UK. I hope you are going ok during these testing times.
The boxes i now have, is a great setup simple and easy.
It would be great to see other parts of the world with a 4wd.
You stay safe mate and thanks for checking out the videos on my channel.
Cheers Tim.
Hi mate,
I watch some UA-cam bushcraft type channels from over there such as Kent Survival and Simon a Bloke in the Woods.
Stay well.
Very nice. I went with a set of custom Drifta draws with a built in 30l fridge and a 55l water tank for my Ranger .
So far so good.
G'day David,
Thats ace mate.
Drifta make great quality gear as well.
Cheers Tim.
G'day David,
Yeah weight distribution has made a big difference and getting a lot of unwanted weight out has changed how the Patrol drives big time.
Thanks mate for your reply.

The new setup is working really well.
Cheers Tim.
Yeah
It’s a great set up
I hate drawers
I use Tactix boxes in the tub of my Ranger
Take all my gear everywhere
I have a canopy
Fridge and dual battery also in the tub
3 x 20 L jerry cans at the back of the tub.....fuel and/or water
Also toilet
Rear seats removed ....that’s where we carry all sleeping gear, cameras, laptops, clothes etc etc
Awning on side...Oztent Taglong with mesh room
Chairs, tent etc on roof rack in a cargo bag
SIMPSON DESERT setup
Hopefully next year when we escape Victoria I’ll hit the desert again
Been up around MURRAY SUNSET NP
& OUTBACK NSW with this setup this year
Also around Tassie in January
Easy
Been trying different setups for 40 years
Camper trailers, caravans etc
Old school camping is still the best
My lovely wife and I are happy cooking over an open fire and enjoying the bush

Yes, less is best for sure mate.

Great set up. I'm a fan of plastic tubs, it's what I use in my ute. Canopy and drawer systems really reduce the usefulness of your vehicle for anything other than touring
G'day Andrew,
Plastic tub sure have a lot of advantages over a drawer system.
Mine is a simple setup, but it works.

Love the setup. My only suggestion is that you could move the water storage to the rear footwells.
G'day mate,
That could work by moving the water storage further forward to balance things up better.
But for now, I'll leave the jerry cans where they are.
Thanks for your feedback mate.

Keep up the great work 👍
G'day Jamie,
Yeah cool mate.

Lovely setup now mate! I dunno I could do without the convenience of drawers vs the plastic tubs . . . . Love the idea of weightloss tho 👍👌🤔
I used to have the same Jerry can setup for water storage but have moved to a frootwell tank - 40L right behind the front seats is a nice place for that weight rather than up that high. I can stack a row of 4 X 10L boxes of spring water on top so it's a really easy to carry 80L. The tank sits snugly between the front seats and the box I made to replace the 2nd row seats which is fixed in place by the original seat bolts and bolted to the drawers so it's rock solid and works a treat 👌👍
Keep up the great vids mate 😄

Lovely video. Now I’m all conflicted as I’m saving up for a set of Drifta drawers with the low fridge slide etc. I like the look of those boxes. Much nicer than the cheap pair of Bunnings tubs I use on trips. They slip around and the lids crack etc. Would really love to see how you set up that barrier. Really fabulous to see this downsize revamp. Do you have a simple chart of how much weight was lost in total, by trimming back item by item, with a total kilo tally? That would be so useful as a model to others!
Not sure what each item weighs that i took out.
But, in total its around 300kgs. It made a massive difference.
Cheers Tim

G'day mate,
The weight saving is off the planet.
Im going to do a live chat video about this.
It's massive the difference mate.
This setup will work very well. Simple and easy mate.
Thanks a lot for your reply and feedback.
Cheers Tim.
You could always try to find some plastic drawers. Get the best of both worlds.
@@aresonasis3343 Never seen anything like that mate.
Can't wait for this....👍
Hope you enjoy this video Renae.
Cheers Tim.
Great video, Tim. Any chance at a closer look on how you made/fit the floor, and the cargo barrier? I'm about to buy a 2002 Patrol, and I'm looking at removing the middle row, so looking for options.
G'day mate,
I already have had a number of people asking the same things you have.
G'day Paul,
Yeah spot on mate.
Families travelling is difficult to keep the weight at a min.
What ever setup you have, has to suit your camping needs.
Thanks mate for your feedback.
Cheers Tim
Looks crackin good mate! 😁👍
Thanks mate.
It will work a treat.
Cheers Tim.
Beautifully simple, l have a similar set up in my trol.
G'day mate,
Simple is the go. Works a treat.
Thanks for your reply.
Cheers Tim.
Obvious pro is weight saving but it's not without it's con's such as losing seating space and ease of access to things in a hurry. It'll be interesting to see your thoughts on it after a few trips. As usual, informative video.
G'day mate,
Mate, taking the seats out would be one of the best things about the changes i have made.
Cheers Tim.
looks great Tim however not for all as most campers have family's need a lot of gear , great for solo guys like yourself:)
G'day Tony,
Thats it mate, it wont suit everyone.
But might still provide some ideas.
Thanks for your reply and feedback mate.
Cheers Tim.
@@timbates4wdadventures what's the name of those boxes you got from Brisbane Tim?
@@boofy081965 G'day mate. They are made by Open Sky Touring in QLD.
Expedition 134
Great quality mate.
Cheers Tim.
Heaps better tim, so many people I know have drawes and all the kit and drive around with it for no reason. Im taking my drawers out and doing same 👍
Thanks mate.
If you can make this setup work, thats great.
Boxes wont suit everyone, but i sure like it.
Thanks for your reply mate.
Cheers Tim.
@@timbates4wdadventures its all huge $$$ these days in the 4x4 scene, good to see you keep it real for the everyday person. Cheers
G'day mate,
Thats cool mate.
You don't necessarily need to use the same boxes that i have.
The concept is more the message and reducing weight from your 4WD.
Thanks for your feedback mate.
Cheers Tim.
Or go with Wolf Packs from Frontrunner, about $50 each. They are great, stack together, light weight and very sturdy
Love the box idea.
With the colour.
Wouldn't it be easier to just label each box ?
Gday Paul,
Mate the boxes are working really well for since taking my heavy drawers out.
You could get all the same colours and label them, if you find that would work better for you.
The different coloured lids works well for me with knowing what’s in them.
I’ve now made use of the inside of the lids. I’ve stored plates, knives, forks etc. nice and easy to get when I need them.
Thanks mate.
Cheers Tim.
Hey Tim looks good any chance can show in one of your videos how you have your water system set up 👍
Gday mate,
Thanks for that. It’s a simple setup, but works well.
Yes, I will get a video of the water setup mate.
Thanks for your reply.
Cheers Tim
Hi Tim, great setup. I am sure you spent a lot of time in planning this setup.
It looks so good. The best thing is being able to remove the boxes for day to day driving.
The fridge in the middle is a great option especially for my dual cab ute. It out of the dust, locked up and secure .
Did or do you need any paperwork from Vic roads to prove that it is now a 2 seater ?
The buddy oven always gets a great rap, best I get one.
All the best thanks for showing the update Tim.
G'day Peter,
Yeah mate i started out with a rough plan, but a i did make a number of changes as the build went on.
I have a video on my channel about what i went through to take the seats out.
Mine has been inspected and approved by Vic Roads.
It is now a registered two seater Patrol.
The ovens are great mate. So handy for so many meals.
Thanks mate for your feedback.
Cheers Tim.
@@timbates4wdadventures Thanks for the reply Tim, have you ever talked about winches. Don't mean to change the topic.
@@Peter-jm7zt Thats all good mate. Ask any questions that you have.
I do have a couple of winch topic videos on the channel.
Did you have something specific about winches you wanted to find out?
@@timbates4wdadventures I have a non winch bar. I have heard that I can install a winch into it using a winch cradle. Not sure if it is a safe thing to do.
Hi Tim, been binging on your videos for a while. Could you please go a bit more detail like how you secure the boxes. In the thumbmail i see a hook, was that drilled and then bolted? Appreciate if you will. From a newbie in WA.
G'day mate,
The hooks i used are M10 eye bolts.
G'day mate,
I loved watching Bush Tucker Man. I have his full DVD box set at home.
Its a simple setup now mate.
Thanks for your reply.
Cheers Tim.
Gday Tim, is you aux battery under the bonnet? Looking at putting an inverter in my 105 and sussing what size wiring to run from the engine bay to the cargo area
Gday mate,
Yes it is mate.
Both my start and second batteries are under the bonnet.
I’m not sure on wiring size, I had an auto elect do all the wiring for me.
Thanks for your reply mate
Cheers Tim
@@timbates4wdadventures thought so. Such a tidy set up now. Been watching a lot of your videos throughout lockdown and getting lots of cooking ideas. Keep up the ripper work. Might see you out and about :)
@@TheRealDouley no worries at all mate.
Fair chance I’ll see you on the tracks at some stage. Lol.
Cheers Tim.
great to see you have gone away from the usual paradigm that is the 'RV' and 4wd scene where weight is not considered and its mostly about the 'look'. all of the drawer systems could be made much lighter than they are, but your system is more adaptable.
G'day mate,
The main reason for this redesign is based on weight reduction, and i have dropped a heap of weight.
Cheers Tim.
Those water containers look like an Aussie made product? What brand are they? Do you run a 12v to dispense the water?
G'day Glenn,
They are Aussie made mate. They are ProQuip jerry cans. I bought these from Super Cheap Auto. About $40 i think they were each.
No i don't have any power to run the water flow.
It's just gravity fed mate.
Thanks for your reply mate.
Cheers Tim.
Love that set up. 👍🍺👍🍺
Thanks mate.
Simple thats for sure.
Cheers Tim.
I like the weight saving but can I be honest with you mate? I reckon you'll miss the drawers. I used to use boxes, I found them to be a PITA. I then went to drawers from Drifta and haven't looked back.
G'day mate,
I cant see that happening for the gear that i have in them.
The weight savings are massive, so no going back.
The drawers that i made were similar to Drifta design.
Thanks mate for your reply and feedback.
Cheers Tim.
@@GS-kh5se spot on mate. Certainly a big benefit with boxes, and they can be taken out while you’re not camping.
Cheers Tim.
Looks brilliant mate!

G'day Sam,
Thats it mate. Works a treat for a simple setup.
Not sure i really need much more than that.

@@timbates4wdadventures I have to have a think outside the box, i lost my draws to my sons child seat. So have to sort something out 👌
@@old4wds_aus Yeah, take your time mate. You will come up with a plan for the back of your rig.
Nice! Did similar mods to back seats myself but went with multi levels using angle brackets great for all those bulky but light items and everything bolted to seat mounts.
Can you where you got your rear lights? They look great and with the kaymar bar I always thought the lights were way too small so am looking to change. Cheers
Gday Dave,
Making those changes has made a huge difference to how I use my Patrol for camping.
The seats coming out are a game changer.
The rear lights on my rear bar are heaps bigger than the standard lights that come in the rear bar.
These are screwed over the top of the standard lights after they were removed.
Thanks for your reply mate.
Cheers Tim.
Appreciate the reply. But where did you buy the lights? Keen to make myself more visible :-)
@@Wdeane1957 I see where you are coming from. Great to chat Wayne.
I have seen some small ones that Bunnings have used in a couple of 4wd's on other channels.
They stack together and have a couple of different designs.
Not going to do what big tubs do but handy for some food, spices and stuff like that.
I can never seem to find them on the website but I have seen them in store.
Hi Batesy. Great set up. Are the boxes waterproof so I can put in the back of the Ute?
G'day Ross,
Yes mate and dust proof.
Check out the Open Sky Touring website. They make them.
Cheers Tim.
Where is the dedicated storage box for the pies Tim?? :)
Haha lol
That’s in a secret compartment lol.

Tim, isn't there a great deal of rattle once you leave the bitumen. Looks as if components of that system would clutter around driving you crazy, well maybe not you, but I could deal with the rattles.
Curious?
G'day mate,
No rattles at all, those items in the back are well secured.
They sure dont move around.
Cheers Tim
Nice and simple. There are a lot of over weight, over complicated and over priced rigs out there. Out of interest, any reason you don't use the insulated cover on the Engel?
G'day mate,
Yeah there sure is a lot of over weighted 4WD's on the road.
Cheers Tim.
