I don't think people realize that annihilape is referencing the old dex entry that said that if primeape got angry enough, it would die. When primeape uses rage fist enough, it turns into a ghost type

I feel like the future Pokemon just come from a future where most Pokémon became extinct, and people began building Pokémon to replace extinct species. Iron Valiant is a good example, as it’s both Gardevoir and Gallade, a streamlined version of the extinct Ralts line without having multiple models.
I'm not sure about that really, I mean we have pokemon that sentients trash bags... I could see them evolving into something more robotic over time, wouldn't be the wierdest thing pokemon have done.
@@CM-hx5dp my theory is that future paradox pokemon came from a future where a cataclysmic event occured that wiped out almost all life forms on poke-earth. Humans being the most adaptable, survived & built these robotic pokemon to replace them.
I think it is because of microplastics. We have things evolving currently to eat microplastics, so in the future, maybe they will use it as part of their biological construction? That's one idea anyway lol
Solid theory. I actually like the future pokemon's robotic designs. I don't understand how they evolved that way either, but I still think they look cool. Great tusk is better than iron tread, though. That weird trunk over the face thing is so weird.
The thing with the Violet paradox Pokemon is that they're supposedly new Pokemon built by the future people to preserve the ancient forms. They're all described as "machines/devices described by the research team."
The books in the academy combined with the journals in the research station imply that the Paradox pokemon aren’t actually from the past/future. But instead are created from people’s imagination. So that also explains the robots.

I love the Sprigatito line because I literally have a cat named Basil and it just fit so well. Also kinda find it funny that half of your reasons for disliking a Pokémon are the reasons I like them.
Yeah same. When I first saw Floragato I didn’t like it, but it and Mewoscarda have seriously grown on me! I still picked Fuecoco as my starter, but it was extremely close between him and Sprigatito.
Yeah i just love Sprigatito as soon as they showed the starters she was my first pick and unpopular opinion I love when they have Pokemon stand on two legs. I'm also biased cuz I love cats.
Plus unlike Nihilego, another Rock/Poison type, it has Earth Power which can take care of Steel types, and it has well rounded bulk unlike Nihilego where it’s very frail physically.

Chien-Pao is actually ingeniously designed! It, like the other 3, is based on the Four Perils from Chinese Mythology. In particular, Chien-Pao is based on Qiongqi. In Chinese folklore, this Peril is depicted as a great feline beast, such as tiger, hence the cat-like design points. In Japanese folklore, it is depicted as a Kamaitachi, a yokai that rides the wind and slices people to ribbons with its sword-like claws. This yokai is often depicted as a weasel, hence the slender body. It’s design is superb! Lastly, if you look closely, the saber “teeth” are actually two halves a broken sword. In times past, a human king stabbed it through the head, trying to undo the ruin that it brought upon his kingdom. Obviously, to no avail. The sword snapped in two, and is now a weapon used by the monster it sought destroy. A grim reminder of how often mankind creates demons it then cannot put down! What a design!
I like that. It's something that took me a good be to realize as well. The sword-stuck-in-snout also reminds me of Norse mythology's Fenrir, who's also not exactly a bringer of happiness either. Not in the new God of War tho, of course. There, Fenrir is the goodest of boys.
I like all the four peril legends in this game. It’s so inspired, the kind of cool folklore and fantasy mix that pokemon has the ability to bring to life.
I specifically hunted down the four dark type legendaries before doing the league, so I could put this kitty cat on my team. I also ended up going with the witch moose as well. The reason I call it a witch moose is because the bowl on its head reminds me of a cauldron.
I think my favorite things about the Ruinous Quartet that often gets overlooked in favor of the whole "their bodies look weird" thing that people have with them, is that their bodies are not the Pokemon. The artifacts contained in the design are the Pokemon, and they used what was around them to form a body Wo-Chein is a bunch a cursed wooden tablets that gathered a bunch of leaves and twigs to become a Pokemon Chien-Pao is a ruinous sword that covered itself in snow to become a Pokemon Ting-Lu is a broken vessel that formed a sturdy body from mud and Earth to become a Pokemon. Chi-Yu is some cursed beads that cloaked itself in flame to become an ADORABLE LITTLE FISHY!! All of them are 10/10 for me. Except for Wo-Chien, he's a 9 simply because he doesn't stack up to the other three. Also their theme is a freaking bop!

The other part of their origins makes Wo-Chien much cooler. Each of the four relics is imbued with a negative emotion caused by the relic. For the tablets, it's the grudge of a person who was punished for carving the sins of his king on them. Considering the relics are said to have come from the East, and it's very possible said king was none other than AZ himself.
My only problem with them is that Chi-yu just doesn't look like a pokemon to me. The others do but that one just... looks like it's from a different franchise. I love the design, it just doesn't scream Pokemon to me.
@@DarthMolgy I knew about the imbued with negative emotion thing, along with coming from the east, but I completely forgot that Kalos is to the East of Paldea and Galar to the Northwest, so they very well could've been AZ! I really hope we get more lore about these four along with the immortal king of Kalos. Maybe in another Legends game?

I like how most of us saw that Crocalor is wearing a "Sombrero" but it's actually a nest on its head, and the egg hatches into a lil fire bird if it evolves into Skeledirge
@@SpeedwagonZaidan Yep. Ground nesting birds and crocodiles will often nest in close proximity and work together to protect the nests. The birds help keep small, fast animals from raiding the nests while the crocs ward off larger creatures.
I love all the dog Pokémon lines in this generation especially since they all stem from the same inspiration. You see there’s a folktale that’s told all across Europe and the Americas about a spirit-like dog creature known as “The Black Dog” and depending on the region that’s telling the tale the creature is described as a fairy-dog, a peaceful ghost-dog, or a horrifying demon-dog. Which is why there’s three different dog lines that have the types Fairy, Ghost, and Dark they’re used to reference the three different descriptions of “The Black Dog”.
@@asaka616 perhaps, it seems the grass-starters and the prehistoric creatures they’re based off become more modern as the generations increase. I mean Meowscarade is just a Iberian Lynx which has gone extinct very recently in most of the region, so stands to reason we’ll get a grass-starter at some point based on an extinct breed of dog.

Skeledirge is a jazz musician, Meowscarade is well dressed in masquerade, and Quaquaval is a Carnival dancer (which is very common for the holiday).

Wugtrio's name actually makes more sense than you think. The ug wug is actually a mythical worm-like sea-dwelling creature from Canada, so "wugtrio" technically means "three aquatic worm-like monsters".
The "fire sombrero" Crocalor is wearing is supposed to be an egg on a nest. While the fire surrounding Skeledirge is meant to be this egg being hatched into a bird in the form of a Phoenix. This was based off the Egyptian plover's relationship with the Nile crocodile, as the croc relies on the plover to help keep their teeth clean and free from infection, while the plover relies on the croc for its diet. It's a really neat detail they added. Even better that Fuecoco got the Kraft Singles treatment...cheese is love, cheese is life.
Yes, and when you use it's signature move, "Torch Song" the little fire bird on it's head becomes a microphone for it to sing into and then it turns back into a firebird to strike at your foes. It's so cool!

Yeah, Dolphins were always associated with aquatic superheroes. DC Comics has a superheroine called Dolphin, Aquaman always had pet dolphins, even Yu-Gi-Oh has a superhero dolphin
I heard someone mention that it is inspired by a brazilian myth about a dolphin that can turn into a man and sleep with people's wives.... tough i havent checked if its true so take it with a grain of salt
9:04 Dunsparce’s inspiration is the Tsuchinoko (reflected in its Japanese name, Nokochii), a yokai while rare is ultimately not that interesting. Nothing in the Tsuchinoko’s lore seems to point towards it becoming something awesome so Dudunsparce seems right on the nose.

If every pokemon were gyarados, or garchomp, or rayquaza, it would not only take away from that variety, but significantly lesson the impact of the pokemon that are truly cool, and pokemon would not succeed nearly as well as franchise because of it. I personally love dudunsparce not only because it's hilarious, but because it feels like a middle finger to people like you, who acts like a narcissist parent and calls a fictional monster a failure on the internet because it didn't grow up into exactly what you wanted it to be.

I actually love Iron Valiant, not only is it a fusion of my 2 favorite Pokémon (Gallade and Gardevoir) but it's also their Megas as seen in it having Mega Gallade's arm blades and Mega Gardevoir's dress and elongated spines.
What I believe what they did was make mega Gallade’s cape work as the dress, I also like that the weapon turns staff like when in battle mode, I know a lot of people like roaring moon way more, but iron valiant is my favorite paradox pokemon
I don't know if anyone's else has gotten to catch it but it is crazy strong with its signature move and a specific item where it where to one shot all of my team... I hated it but now I love it
Greavard and Houndstone may just be two of my new favorite Pokémon because they are the first shinies that I got purely by accident (I’ve gotten them in X via Masuda method and Ultra Moon via the wormholes). I was hunting for a Kirlia or Gardevior in the Glaseado Mountains when I accidentally ran into a Greavard and saw that instead of white, it was golden. Caught it right away.
I once caught a houndstone and named it "old yeller" but then realized that name would be more appropriate for a shiny houndstone cause the shiny houndstone is the color "yeller" Also do you get the joke in the nickname cause I don't want to explain it.
When you said brutebonet shouldn’t hav the pokeball sign because it’s from ancient times, I thought maybe the foongus, amoongus, and brutebonet’s mushrooms are the inspiration to making a pokeball look like them
It's pretty much comfirmed cuz one of Foongus's dex entries in these games says that the creator of the modern Pokéball seems to have been obsessed with Foongus.
Also, didn't someone go into the past in scarlet lore? Which means they likely had pokeballs with them and maybe they quickly evolved into looking like them
i feel like a lot of object-based pokemon can be looked at with a similar philosophy. Maybe the modern magnet design like what we see with magnemite was inspided BY Sandy Shocks/ancient magnemites, just like the pokeball was inspired by Foongus.

I _really_ hope that he does this kind of video again now that he’s finished the story. I’d imagine that seeing how the Pokémon move and fight could sway his opinions a little bit. Like…he said _very little_ about Mabosstiff. Anyone who’s tackled the Path of Legends knows that there’s a lot more to be said.
They really did a genius move with Mabosstif. Mabosstif on his own is a decent pokémon, with a fun design idea, but it's nothing special otherwise, be it stats, movepool or whatever. Then they just fucking went there and gave it cancer in Pepper's story and it probably went from a "not very special" pokémon to one of the most precious bois of the generation for many people. At least I still feel bad for any Mabostiff I k.o. even if it isn't Pepper's.
I wasn’t sure about Meowscarada at first. But having it in game I started loving it. The designs, how it acts, the signature move, the typing. Easily one of my favourite Pokémon in Gen 9, if not my favourite. And definitely in my top 3 starters ❤

When I first caught my flittle, I could've sworn it was a psychic baby dumbo octopus. Imagine my reaction to finding out it was actually a pastel ostrich chick all along.
Fuecoco honestly won my heart almost the second I first saw it & I am proud to say that I successfully beat the main story with Skeledirge on my team during my 1st complete play through of the main story.
As a Meowscarada fan as well, i also think its mask could have been a bit smaller but then again, i don't know what the normal size of the masks in a masquerade ball is
I feel like its worth mentioning that Tandemaus evolves into Maushold without you ever seeing. One moment they're two, the next they're 3/4. Theyre also extremely cute and expressive in motion.
I find it cute that you need to travel with them to evolve them. Like you have to show them that they're safe with you to start a family, or it's like a couple seeing the sights before settling down with children 🥺
Still wish it wasn't so plain looking like they could have each one having unique markings akin to Spinda and the kid's markings would be random. However, the fact that it becomes a family just because the little ones suddenly show up one day and they immediately accept them according to the dex in addition to its unknown gender is a big plus.
The Meowscarada line didn't need that much hate. They are all 10 for me. Skawquabily being a full double the points of Meowscarada honesty feels like a crime
Especially since Skeledirge got points for supposed novelty that it decisively lacks, but doesn't give the actual novel starters any points for novelty.
It’s my personal opinion but I hate Meowscarada because they “Incineroared” it by turning a 4 legged cat with potential to be something really cool into 2 legged humanoid furry bait. Meowscarada to me looks more like a human in a fur suit than it does a cat, and that’s just weird. My points were basically the same as Mikey’s

The reason the paradox forms have those names Its because they are like giving them names of cryptids like Big Foot or Brute Bonnet since in game people dont really belive in them
15:26 Nihilego's origins are the glass jellyfish, an invasive species to Hawaii. Glass is made of rocks, and jellyfish are poisonous. Rock/Poison type.
Stop trying to "justify" it with "glass", which would actually be grounds for a Ground typing, and start with "ayo, it's an Ultra Beast". They could have went with Electric/Fighting and the fact that Nihilego is an Ultra Beast would justify being typed as such.
@@Genericmug Sand has been established as a Ground type thing since the first generation, and processed versions of soft earth turned hard are still considered Ground type things judging from the Golett evolutionary family being considered Ground despite being made of terracotta, the only logical explanation for the type combination is that it's an UB, and thus, could be any type combination and still make sense simply by virtue of being an Ultra Beast.
Arbolivia is kinda weird for being Grass/Normal, but it’s ability creates Grassy Terrain when damaged and that pairs with it naturally learning Terrain Pulse which is stab with or without the terrain active. It’s high Special Attack also makes firing off stab Hyper Beams to finish off strong opponents really fun
Yeah it's a solid Grass type, it may be slow but it has pretty decent bulk with recovery in Synthesis, and coverage for Steel types in Earth Power. Is it the best Grass type? No. Is it still a good Pokémon? Yes. :)
I've realised that Mikey simply isn't a fan of the Normal type, probably because of his experiences with it. He doesn't think Smoliv's type is unfantastic because he thinks Normal is lame, but because Normal doesn't give him good vibes and he'd prefer to not add it.

Mine knows both Hyper Beam and Giga Drain and that combined with Seed Sower makes it a fairly bulky mon. Plus, being able to switch to normal tera type helps by giving it ghost immunity and removes it's grass weaknesses.
Iron Valliant is my favourite of the new Pokemon, but I don’t really care about the rest of the future paradoxes. Overall the past forms win it for me, but iron Valliant is still my fav!
If you didn't know, a "Wug" is an old folk language name for a creature with worm or insect like features so it fits perfectly if you ask me with it being garden eels (or the equivalent of sea worms):)
Baxcalibur is 100% a Godzilla reference. The spike on its back it’s absolutely a Godzilla spike, and it’s signature move is a reference to Godzilla’s ability to fly away using its atomic breath. Which is hilarious. Gholdengo looks like a golden wacky waving inflatable arm flailing tube man.
Iron Valiant is by far the best paradox pokemon it's awesome, and I love how it can combine its arm blades into one weapon. Also, it's a fairy/fighting type whats's not to love.
@@pahaninYT I think that's kind of the point. They aren't even described as alive in the dex entries, they're referred to as "objects". Perhaps those species of Pokemon went extinct and the humans of the future recreated them through mechanical engineering

There are a bunch of directions to left turn his look to something interesting if not competent. Heck they could even go the Shedinja route and make him a derptrio with his own shed skins...
I’d like to argue in favour of dudunsparce being an awesome evolution because dunsparce, at least to me, has always been a goofy Pokémon that didn’t need a cool evo. Making it longer and staying relatively goofy was probably a good thing. Maybe a little bit of tweaking to the design would be good but I really liked it.
So about the robotic paradox pokemon, I was confused at first too but my friend gave me an explanation that kinda makes sense. Its a future where resources are low and pokemon are dying out, but the battle culture isnt. So they might transfer the consciousness of a pokemon (Or just mimic one) into one of these robots as it would allow for more resources for humans, but still allow battle culture
Books in the library, and in the research labs in area zero, imply that Paradox pokemon aren’t actually from the past/future. But are created from people’s imaginations. Hence the robots all being based on in-universe fiction according to the pokedex.
Despite the robotic appearance, I feel that the futuristic paradox pokemon are possibly cyborgs rather than complete machines. If they were really just machines, they wouldn't really be pokemon that can be caught in pokeballs and be trained. Plus they and Miraidon eat food.
I get what you're saying, but we do have a Pokémon that's a completely artificial life form. Though I suppose Magearna can be considered an exception to the rule
I think Sandy Shocks implies that Magnemite/Magneton are naturally occuring Pokemon rather than being man-made. Like maybe in the Pokemon world, regular magnets are based on Magneton instead of the other way around. I like how the magnetic sand around it and the tails made of screws make it seem more like an animal.
On the other hand it could just be Magnemite/Magneton that got lost within space and/or time and they adapted into Sandy Shocks over time. Things being lost to space and/or time is something we have seen for ourselves over the course of the past several games including Magnemite/Magneton being introduced into Sinnoh's past before they should have been.
You won't be calling Lokix weak when you see it's IMMENSE potential competitively with Bug and Dark being a solid STAB combo combined with Tinted Lens AND Swords Dance making it essentially unwallable And Dudunsparce becoming longer has some sense to it from another perspective since Dunsparce IS based on the Tsuchinoko, who's essentially the JOKE Yokai. While other Yokai are supernatural entities and spirits in Japanese folklore, all the Tsuchinoko does is.... Bite.

Unpopular opinion: I like Dudunsparce. Dunsparce was always a simple pokemon, and I think the adding of a segment was kinda funny and something I think a dunsparce evolution could look like
You're not alone, I love Dudunsparce. It stays loyal to the actual Pokémon's origins - which most of the fan concepts didn't. Something about Dudunsparce's design makes it both derpy, a little fearsome (probably due to the size, imagine if it smacks you with its tail), and makes it clear the designers knew why people liked Dunsparce. Dudunsparce forever!
Thought you would give Crocalor and Skeliderge more points because of the fire bird spirit they walk around with. One of the most creative designs to date honestly

Why do I get the feeling that Sprigatito's evolutions and Dudunsparce would've got a higher rating if you hadn't raised your expectations with fanart beforehand? That doesn't seem fair to rate them so low just because you've been basing your hype on something else that you had already seen.
Exactly! And this is just how I feel, but I don't think those fanarts are even that good. One is just a big cat with leaves and the other isn't even remotely related to Dunsparce. I just don't get why everyone wanted those.
SO true though. not to mention, in the case of bipedal starters, gamefreak has spoken about their design philosophies incorporating the starter evolving with you as a trainer, which is why they often become bipedal and somewhat human-like. even the non-bipedal ones still evolve very human like characteristics, like samurott using its blade and torterra looking like an old man in the face. that concept has only become stronger since gen 1, hence why it's been so frequent since then. i actually really admire the concept and try to look for it whenever i see the new starter evolutions now!

I think Violets Paradox Pokémon are man-made. They are meant to look like Pokémon from the past but with upgrades in places. Such as Iron Valiant being fairy/fighting taking the best of the two Ralts lines final evolutions and going this will work. I have a feeling that Pokémon in the future have basically died out and now their making them, but the typing's are wrong so we're getting these robotic copycats that are just a bit off. Though each one has at least one common typing based on their original counterparts being, ground, ice, fighting, fire, dark, rock and as we understand Iron valiant is a combo of both Gardevoir and Gallade fairy and fighting. (Sorry, this is long, but it does make sense)
I honestly agree with this, the future of Pokémon kinda seems to be suggesting all organic ones either died out or were replaced by more efficient machines, and their names all starting with "Iron" sort of suggests they were all manufactured almost like a brand, there's no love put into their name because the ones who made them in the future only wanted efficiency, kinda horrifying to think about but kinda interesting too

Maushold is my favorite new Pokemon in this generation, so that 2/10 really hurt. I thought Tandemaus looked adorable and decided it should be a temporary member of the team. When it evolved at level 25 completely off screen, I thought I found a glitch in the game (I avoided all leaks leading up to the game). That was when I came to think that they were actually just cool and cute at the same time, so I decided to keep them around. Near the endgame, they finally learned population bomb, and I was advised to give them the wide lens. They became the most broken Pokemon I have ever used in a playthrough and one of my favorites in the entire Pokemon series. 10/10 for me.
I agree 10/10. I feel like a lot of modern pokemon are also grossly overdesigned as well so I like that it's just a family of little mice :) and yeah it's potential with wide lens + technician will be fun
Alright so nobody even knows about Golden Sun, but it will always be my favorite game in history. And I’m mentioning it because “Dunsparce” evolving into “Dudunsparce” makes me think about Donpa, Dodonpa, and Dodonpapa. 😂
I hope this list updates in the future. Because in my opinion the iron paradox pokemon are awesome. And the dex entrys are mysterious as hell and I just love them all.
After he described Iron Valiant's terrifying eyes and how it would kill him, I thought he'd say "9/10", lol. Like, we should have cool intimidating pokemon. I love all of the future ones, but I agree that it's dumb that Scarlet's pokemon at least had different names, while Violet had "Iron -----"
Just my opinion, but I think the “dex entries are mysterious” actually harm them, all paradox forms are “Looks similar to a Pokémon found on a book” instead of describing them. Future Paradox at least have a bit of theory like Iron Valiant being apparently created by a mad scientist, Iron Moth being a UFO or Iron Hands being a cyborg, but still, it’s all theory, almost none of the entries have a unique flavor

While Past Paradox have names people would give to cryptid-like monsters like “Great Tusk”, Future Paradox having all the same title makes it look like organized models and a series number, and I think it makes sense considering they come from a very distant future in which it looks like machinery has taken over

Chien-Pao isn't a Sabertooth cat. It's a Sabertoothed Mink or maybe an Ermine. Look up what a mink and an ermine are and you'll see the similarities. They even waddle run similarly. It's adorable and strong.

@@wikiuser92 it’s actually more based on the four evil creatures of the world from Chinese myth. The one that it’s based on is Qiongqi, the representative of depravity and war, hence the sword as it’s teeth and why it drops your defenses as it’s ability.
Scovillian is my favorite name though. A fire grass type based on chilipeppers who's Hotness is measured on the Scoville scale, thats brilliant. The thing thats makes chillis "Hot" capsaicin into the pre-evolution Capsakid got get some bonuspoints aswell ;) Looks is a different matter not a fan of the looks either. Baxcalibur is my favorite in name+looks. "Excalibur on its back" he actually uses his swordfin to attack with its singature move "glaive rush" and it looks like 60's Godzilla.
Here’s a bit of lore and pokedex stuff that may or may not change one’s opinions on some of these Pokémon: The Tinkaton line starts by being bullied by Steel-type Pokémon only to evolve and hunt them down out of sheer spite and to use their metals to keep upgrading the hammer. Tinkaton is the sole reason why Corviknight Taxis aren’t a thing in Paldea, since they throw boulders with their hammer to knock them down. Koraidon and Miraidon have similar names to the other paradox Pokémon but somehow got “actual” names. While I don’t remember Koraidon’s nickname, Miraidon was known as the Iron Serpent. The 4 other legendaries are cursed relics that turned into Pokémon and were sealed away in shrines due to their malicious behavior. I don’t remember their names, but the snail came from cursed tablets wrapped around its body, the sabertooth came from a broken sword that turned into fangs, the moose comes from the bowl thing I think, and the fish comes from the beads around its eyes. Meowscarada uses tricks and illusions to hide the stem of the flower behind it. That one isn’t as interesting but I just think it’s neat. Skeledirge is known as the Singer Pokémon due to it making strange musical sounds from its mouth. But the thing is, it’s not Skeledirge making those sounds, it’s the fire bird on its nose that hatched from Crocalor’s egg that plays on the colorful marks on Skeledirge’s head.
Honestly Sprigatito, Florigato, Meowscarada are a 10/10 for me. I love them dearly but I also never gave a crap about the whole standing up starter thing.

Not only that, but the Floragato, Meowscarada, and Skeledirge entries are proof that there is such things as wrong opinions. A starter's novelty should be within their actual peers, the type they are. The fact that neither Floragato nor Meowscarada got points for being part of the first Grass type line to go from quadruped to biped, but Skeledirge got points despite being part of the third¹ Fire line to go from biped to quadruped _and having the same flaws that made Incineroar so disliked before getting into Smash_ is just wrong. ¹counting Johtonian and Hisuian Typhlosion as separate lines
Personally I really like how it seems like they weren’t too afraid to lean in on the goofy, cartoonish aspect of Pokémon in terms of designs. When I first saw Dudunsparce, I just laughed. It’s such a dumb design and idea that I kinda love it. Same with tandemaus and maushold. Love this generation so far.
They gave us an astounding high number of unique type combos never seen before: Grass/Fire, Electric/Fighting, Normal/Poison, Steel/Poison, Ground/Fighting, Bug/Dark, Fairy/Fighting... I don't think I'm missing anything else. Now we still need Normal/Ice, Normal/Steel, Normal/Bug, Normal/Rock, Rock/Ghost, Fairy/Fire, Ice/Poison, as well as proper Electric/Fire, Dragon/Fairy and Ice/Fire types, and perhaps a new Fire/Water type that's a bit easier to access than Volcanion? Might have missed a few missing type combos, these are just off the top of my head.
@@Rubywing4 The fact that GameFreak has always felt the need to mandatorily give all fossil Pokemon (pre-Galar) the Rock type is even more astounding that there's never been a Rock/Ghost type yet. You would think that in 25 years of bringing fossils back to life, they'd somehow find a way to make a Rock/Ghost. Maybe a Pokemon that scientists weren't fully able to bring back to life and is still partially dead (zombie-like maybe?) could be that Rock/Ghost.
i absolutely love scovillain and capsakid. Everyone expected the first fire grass to be pepper inspired and i think they executed it perfectly with mean looking pokemon. used one on my playthrough and it alone swept geetas last 5 pokemon after espathra at level 62

Skeledirge overtook Charizard becoming my favorite pokemon of all time over night. As someone who's from Tucson, where Dia De Los Muertos is celebrated I really love everything about it. His name is on point with skele = skeleton and dirge = lament of the dead. It's based on Dia De Los Muertos, and alebrijes. The fire at the corners of his mouth are not flames, but marigolds. They line ofrendas and their scent and bright colors guide spirits to them. It's executed better in game, where you see the petals flow through the orange. The colorful head is based on sugar skulls, another big thing for Dia De Muertos. It's a Mexican holiday, but has roots in Medieval Europe and Spain. Dirges are more Catholic based than Dia De Muertos, but again works with this Spanish crocodile Pokemon since Spain's major religion is Christianity/Catholicism. And the reason why they colonized Mexico was to spread that religion across the Americas.
I think a really cool explanation as to why primape evolves into annihilape is because when it gets so mad it dies, and it has to use RAGE punch 20 TIMES to evolve into a GHOST/fighting type pokemon. Edit:I'm also one of those people who like armorouge more than ceruledge.

I personally like iron treads a lot more than most iron variants due to how it isn’t just a robo version but the face and head have been altered and lost to time, to the point the nose is just an actual tread, referencing the name
I love Kinggambit cause I’m chess there is an opening in chess called the King’s Gambit and in it you sacrifice some pawns for an advantage and Kinggambit gets stronger the more Pokémon are fainted on your team
My ranking for Skeledirge’s line: Fuecoco: 10/10. A bean. Crocalor: 9/10. A bean with a sombrero. Saved my own backdoor sombrero against kofu. Skeledirge: 11/10. What can I say. A giant fire croc. Swept Larry, grusha, geeta (AAT (Academy Ace Tournament) because I gave it earth power).
Sprigatito's second stage is oddly my favorite , probably because it's body shape is litrally just a kemono fursuit,like you could litrally not modify anything about it's desing and turn it into a fursuit

I feel like the future Pokemon just come from a future where most Pokémon became extinct, and people began building Pokémon to replace extinct species. Iron Valiant is a good example, as it’s both Gardevoir and Gallade, a streamlined version of the extinct Ralts line without having multiple models.
I'm not sure about that really, I mean we have pokemon that sentients trash bags... I could see them evolving into something more robotic over time, wouldn't be the wierdest thing pokemon have done.

The thing with the Violet paradox Pokemon is that they're supposedly new Pokemon built by the future people to preserve the ancient forms. They're all described as "machines/devices described by the research team."
The books in the academy combined with the journals in the research station imply that the Paradox pokemon aren’t actually from the past/future. But instead are created from people’s
imagination. So that also explains the robots.

Plus unlike Nihilego, another Rock/Poison type, it has Earth Power which can take care of Steel types, and it has well rounded bulk unlike Nihilego where it’s very frail physically.

Chien-Pao is actually ingeniously designed! It, like the other 3, is based on the Four Perils from Chinese Mythology. In particular, Chien-Pao is based on Qiongqi. In Chinese folklore, this Peril is depicted as a great feline beast, such as tiger, hence the cat-like design points. In Japanese folklore, it is depicted as a Kamaitachi, a yokai that rides the wind and slices people to ribbons with its sword-like claws. This yokai is often depicted as a weasel, hence the slender body. It’s design is superb! Lastly, if you look closely, the saber “teeth” are actually two halves a broken sword. In times past, a human king stabbed it through the head, trying to undo the ruin that it brought upon his kingdom. Obviously, to no avail. The sword snapped in two, and is now a weapon used by the monster it sought destroy. A grim reminder of how often mankind creates demons it then cannot put down! What a design!

The sword-stuck-in-snout also reminds me of Norse mythology's Fenrir, who's also not exactly a bringer of happiness either.

I like all the four peril legends in this game. It’s so inspired, the kind of cool folklore and fantasy mix that pokemon has the ability to bring to life.
Weavile is based on a kamaitachi and is also Dark/Ice type, that's why Chien Pao has the same type.
Chien-Pao's Violet dex entry states that the pokemon itself IS the sword, which used snow to make itself a body in the form of Chien-Pao.
I specifically hunted down the four dark type legendaries before doing the league, so I could put this kitty cat on my team. I also ended up going with the witch moose as well. The reason I call it a witch moose is because the bowl on its head reminds me of a cauldron.
I think my favorite things about the Ruinous Quartet that often gets overlooked in favor of the whole "their bodies look weird" thing that people have with them, is that their bodies are not the Pokemon. The artifacts contained in the design are the Pokemon, and they used what was around them to form a body
Wo-Chein is a bunch a cursed wooden tablets that gathered a bunch of leaves and twigs to become a Pokemon
Chien-Pao is a ruinous sword that covered itself in snow to become a Pokemon
Ting-Lu is a broken vessel that formed a sturdy body from mud and Earth to become a Pokemon.
Chi-Yu is some cursed beads that cloaked itself in flame to become an ADORABLE LITTLE FISHY!!
All of them are 10/10 for me. Except for Wo-Chien, he's a 9 simply because he doesn't stack up to the other three. Also their theme is a freaking bop!

The other part of their origins makes Wo-Chien much cooler. Each of the four relics is imbued with a negative emotion caused by the relic. For the tablets, it's the grudge of a person who was punished for carving the sins of his king on them. Considering the relics are said to have come from the East, and it's very possible said king was none other than AZ himself.
My only problem with them is that Chi-yu just doesn't look like a pokemon to me. The others do but that one just... looks like it's from a different franchise. I love the design, it just doesn't scream Pokemon to me.

You see there’s a folktale that’s told all across Europe and the Americas about a spirit-like dog creature known as “The Black Dog” and depending on the region that’s telling the tale the creature is described as a fairy-dog, a peaceful ghost-dog, or a horrifying demon-dog. Which is why there’s three different dog lines that have the types Fairy, Ghost, and Dark they’re used to reference the three different descriptions of “The Black Dog”.

@@asaka616 perhaps, it seems the grass-starters and the prehistoric creatures they’re based off become more modern as the generations increase. I mean Meowscarade is just a Iberian Lynx which has gone extinct very recently in most of the region, so stands to reason we’ll get a grass-starter at some point based on an extinct breed of dog.

Skeledirge is a jazz musician, Meowscarade is well dressed in masquerade, and Quaquaval is a Carnival dancer (which is very common for the holiday).

The "fire sombrero" Crocalor is wearing is supposed to be an egg on a nest. While the fire surrounding Skeledirge is meant to be this egg being hatched into a bird in the form of a Phoenix. This was based off the Egyptian plover's relationship with the Nile crocodile, as the croc relies on the plover to help keep their teeth clean and free from infection, while the plover relies on the croc for its diet. It's a really neat detail they added. Even better that Fuecoco got the Kraft Singles treatment...cheese is love, cheese is life.

Yes, and when you use it's signature move, "Torch Song" the little fire bird on it's head becomes a microphone for it to sing into and then it turns back into a firebird to strike at your foes. It's so cool!

I actually love Iron Valiant, not only is it a fusion of my 2 favorite Pokémon (Gallade and Gardevoir) but it's also their Megas as seen in it having Mega Gallade's arm blades and Mega Gardevoir's dress and elongated spines.
What I believe what they did was make mega Gallade’s cape work as the dress, I also like that the weapon turns staff like when in battle mode, I know a lot of people like roaring moon way more, but iron valiant is my favorite paradox pokemon

Greavard and Houndstone may just be two of my new favorite Pokémon because they are the first shinies that I got purely by accident (I’ve gotten them in X via Masuda method and Ultra Moon via the wormholes). I was hunting for a Kirlia or Gardevior in the Glaseado Mountains when I accidentally ran into a Greavard and saw that instead of white, it was golden. Caught it right away.
I once caught a houndstone and named it "old yeller" but then realized that name would be more appropriate for a shiny houndstone cause the shiny houndstone is the color "yeller"

Brute Bronnet makes sense to have the pokeball pattern as foongus's pokedex entry mentions it being the inspiration behind the modern pokeball design
i feel like a lot of object-based pokemon can be looked at with a similar philosophy. Maybe the modern magnet design like what we see with magnemite was inspided BY Sandy Shocks/ancient magnemites, just like the pokeball was inspired by Foongus.

They really did a genius move with Mabosstif. Mabosstif on his own is a decent pokémon, with a fun design idea, but it's nothing special otherwise, be it stats, movepool or whatever. Then they just fucking went there and gave it cancer in Pepper's story and it probably went from a "not very special" pokémon to one of the most precious bois of the generation for many people. At least I still feel bad for any Mabostiff I k.o. even if it isn't Pepper's.

I find it cute that you need to travel with them to evolve them. Like you have to show them that they're safe with you to start a family, or it's like a couple seeing the sights before settling down with children 🥺

Still wish it wasn't so plain looking like they could have each one having unique markings akin to Spinda and the kid's markings would be random. However, the fact that it becomes a family just because the little ones suddenly show up one day and they immediately accept them according to the dex in addition to its unknown gender is a big plus.

Imagine hating on Dudunsparce. They just added more perfection to perfection itself.
Arbolivia is kinda weird for being Grass/Normal, but it’s ability creates Grassy Terrain when damaged and that pairs with it naturally learning Terrain Pulse which is stab with or without the terrain active. It’s high Special Attack also makes firing off stab Hyper Beams to finish off strong opponents really fun
Yeah it's a solid Grass type, it may be slow but it has pretty decent bulk with recovery in Synthesis, and coverage for Steel types in Earth Power. Is it the best Grass type? No. Is it still a good Pokémon? Yes. :)
I've realised that Mikey simply isn't a fan of the Normal type, probably because of his experiences with it. He doesn't think Smoliv's type is unfantastic because he thinks Normal is lame, but because Normal doesn't give him good vibes and he'd prefer to not add it.

Mine knows both Hyper Beam and Giga Drain and that combined with Seed Sower makes it a fairly bulky mon. Plus, being able to switch to normal tera type helps by giving it ghost immunity and removes it's grass weaknesses.

I’d like to argue in favour of dudunsparce being an awesome evolution because dunsparce, at least to me, has always been a goofy Pokémon that didn’t need a cool evo. Making it longer and staying relatively goofy was probably a good thing. Maybe a little bit of tweaking to the design would be good but I really liked it.

So about the robotic paradox pokemon, I was confused at first too but my friend gave me an explanation that kinda makes sense. Its a future where resources are low and pokemon are dying out, but the battle culture isnt. So they might transfer the consciousness of a pokemon (Or just mimic one) into one of these robots as it would allow for more resources for humans, but still allow battle culture
They gave you an explanation that works based on real life. However these creatures cannot exist in real life, that's why they're paradoxes.
Books in the library, and in the research labs in area zero, imply that Paradox pokemon aren’t actually from the past/future. But are created from people’s imaginations. Hence the robots all being based on in-universe fiction according to the pokedex.
So they accidentally give them lower/higher stats than their original forms?
Despite the robotic appearance, I feel that the futuristic paradox pokemon are possibly cyborgs rather than complete machines. If they were really just machines, they wouldn't really be pokemon that can be caught in pokeballs and be trained. Plus they and Miraidon eat food.

I get what you're saying, but we do have a Pokémon that's a completely artificial life form. Though I suppose Magearna can be considered an exception to the rule
I think Sandy Shocks implies that Magnemite/Magneton are naturally occuring Pokemon rather than being man-made. Like maybe in the Pokemon world, regular magnets are based on Magneton instead of the other way around. I like how the magnetic sand around it and the tails made of screws make it seem more like an animal.
And being Elec/Ground feels like a nice backwards evolution of a Elec/Steel, and it WALKS rather than float.
On the other hand it could just be Magnemite/Magneton that got lost within space and/or time and they adapted into Sandy Shocks over time. Things being lost to space and/or time is something we have seen for ourselves over the course of the past several games including Magnemite/Magneton being introduced into Sinnoh's past before they should have been.
I just like the total change of pace and quirky 'Security Bot' theme of it. 8/10 easy, it's so cool.

And Dudunsparce becoming longer has some sense to it from another perspective since Dunsparce IS based on the Tsuchinoko, who's essentially the JOKE Yokai. While other Yokai are supernatural entities and spirits in Japanese folklore, all the Tsuchinoko does is.... Bite.
Plus Lokix has a usable attack and speed stat so it’s not a bad Pokémon

Super late but I disagree, you can Torch Song sweep or Aqua Step + Work Up sweep with the other two starters’ signature moves

Something about Dudunsparce's design makes it both derpy, a little fearsome (probably due to the size, imagine if it smacks you with its tail), and makes it clear the designers knew why people liked Dunsparce.

SO true though. not to mention, in the case of bipedal starters, gamefreak has spoken about their design philosophies incorporating the starter evolving with you as a trainer, which is why they often become bipedal and somewhat human-like. even the non-bipedal ones still evolve very human like characteristics, like samurott using its blade and torterra looking like an old man in the face. that concept has only become stronger since gen 1, hence why it's been so frequent since then. i actually really admire the concept and try to look for it whenever i see the new starter evolutions now!

I think Violets Paradox Pokémon are man-made. They are meant to look like Pokémon from the past but with upgrades in places. Such as Iron Valiant being fairy/fighting taking the best of the two Ralts lines final evolutions and going this will work. I have a feeling that Pokémon in the future have basically died out and now their making them, but the typing's are wrong so we're getting these robotic copycats that are just a bit off. Though each one has at least one common typing based on their original counterparts being, ground, ice, fighting, fire, dark, rock and as we understand Iron valiant is a combo of both Gardevoir and Gallade fairy and fighting. (Sorry, this is long, but it does make sense)

I honestly agree with this, the future of Pokémon kinda seems to be suggesting all organic ones either died out or were replaced by more efficient machines, and their names all starting with "Iron" sort of suggests they were all manufactured almost like a brand, there's no love put into their name because the ones who made them in the future only wanted efficiency, kinda horrifying to think about but kinda interesting too
i like the idea that the future paradox pokemon are like “restorations” or fossil pokemon of our current pokemon from the future

Maushold is my favorite new Pokemon in this generation, so that 2/10 really hurt. I thought Tandemaus looked adorable and decided it should be a temporary member of the team. When it evolved at level 25 completely off screen, I thought I found a glitch in the game (I avoided all leaks leading up to the game). That was when I came to think that they were actually just cool and cute at the same time, so I decided to keep them around. Near the endgame, they finally learned population bomb, and I was advised to give them the wide lens. They became the most broken Pokemon I have ever used in a playthrough and one of my favorites in the entire Pokemon series. 10/10 for me.
I agree 10/10. I feel like a lot of modern pokemon are also grossly overdesigned as well so I like that it's just a family of little mice :) and yeah it's potential with wide lens + technician will be fun

After he described Iron Valiant's terrifying eyes and how it would kill him, I thought he'd say "9/10", lol. Like, we should have cool intimidating pokemon. I love all of the future ones, but I agree that it's dumb that Scarlet's pokemon at least had different names, while Violet had "Iron -----"
Just my opinion, but I think the “dex entries are mysterious” actually harm them, all paradox forms are “Looks similar to a Pokémon found on a book” instead of describing them. Future Paradox at least have a bit of theory like Iron Valiant being apparently created by a mad scientist, Iron Moth being a UFO or Iron Hands being a cyborg, but still, it’s all theory, almost none of the entries have a unique flavor

While Past Paradox have names people would give to cryptid-like monsters like “Great Tusk”, Future Paradox having all the same title makes it look like organized models and a series number, and I think it makes sense considering they come from a very distant future in which it looks like machinery has taken over

Chien-Pao isn't a Sabertooth cat. It's a Sabertoothed Mink or maybe an Ermine. Look up what a mink and an ermine are and you'll see the similarities. They even waddle run similarly. It's adorable and strong.

Scovillian is my favorite name though. A fire grass type based on chilipeppers who's Hotness is measured on the Scoville scale, thats brilliant. The thing thats makes chillis "Hot" capsaicin into the pre-evolution Capsakid got get some bonuspoints aswell ;) Looks is a different matter not a fan of the looks either. Baxcalibur is my favorite in name+looks. "Excalibur on its back" he actually uses his swordfin to attack with its singature move "glaive rush" and it looks like 60's Godzilla.

Here’s a bit of lore and pokedex stuff that may or may not change one’s opinions on some of these Pokémon:
The Tinkaton line starts by being bullied by Steel-type Pokémon only to evolve and hunt them down out of sheer spite and to use their metals to keep upgrading the hammer. Tinkaton is the sole reason why Corviknight Taxis aren’t a thing in Paldea, since they throw boulders with their hammer to knock them down.
Koraidon and Miraidon have similar names to the other paradox Pokémon but somehow got “actual” names. While I don’t remember Koraidon’s nickname, Miraidon was known as the Iron Serpent.
The 4 other legendaries are cursed relics that turned into Pokémon and were sealed away in shrines due to their malicious behavior. I don’t remember their names, but the snail came from cursed tablets wrapped around its body, the sabertooth came from a broken sword that turned into fangs, the moose comes from the bowl thing I think, and the fish comes from the beads around its eyes.
Meowscarada uses tricks and illusions to hide the stem of the flower behind it. That one isn’t as interesting but I just think it’s neat.
Skeledirge is known as the Singer Pokémon due to it making strange musical sounds from its mouth. But the thing is, it’s not Skeledirge making those sounds, it’s the fire bird on its nose that hatched from Crocalor’s egg that plays on the colorful marks on Skeledirge’s head.

Not only that, but the Floragato, Meowscarada, and Skeledirge entries are proof that there is such things as wrong opinions. A starter's novelty should be within their actual peers, the type they are. The fact that neither Floragato nor Meowscarada got points for being part of the first Grass type line to go from quadruped to biped, but Skeledirge got points despite being part of the third¹ Fire line to go from biped to quadruped _and having the same flaws that made Incineroar so disliked before getting into Smash_ is just wrong.

Personally I really like how it seems like they weren’t too afraid to lean in on the goofy, cartoonish aspect of Pokémon in terms of designs. When I first saw Dudunsparce, I just laughed. It’s such a dumb design and idea that I kinda love it. Same with tandemaus and maushold. Love this generation so far.

I am glad they gave us electric/fighting. Those are super effective against the three most common types in the game, so it's nice.
They gave us an astounding high number of unique type combos never seen before: Grass/Fire, Electric/Fighting, Normal/Poison, Steel/Poison, Ground/Fighting, Bug/Dark, Fairy/Fighting... I don't think I'm missing anything else.
Now we still need Normal/Ice, Normal/Steel, Normal/Bug, Normal/Rock, Rock/Ghost, Fairy/Fire, Ice/Poison, as well as proper Electric/Fire, Dragon/Fairy and Ice/Fire types, and perhaps a new Fire/Water type that's a bit easier to access than Volcanion?
Might have missed a few missing type combos, these are just off the top of my head.

You would think that in 25 years of bringing fossils back to life, they'd somehow find a way to make a Rock/Ghost. Maybe a Pokemon that scientists weren't fully able to bring back to life and is still partially dead (zombie-like maybe?) could be that Rock/Ghost.

i absolutely love scovillain and capsakid. Everyone expected the first fire grass to be pepper inspired and i think they executed it perfectly with mean looking pokemon. used one on my playthrough and it alone swept geetas last 5 pokemon after espathra at level 62

I mean, I'd have also liked the obvious choice of a fancy Grass special-attacking Lynx (yes, quadrupedal) that everyone and their Magikarp wanted - but I'm sort of glad they went for the bolder bipedal Zorro-magician style. 👏👏 for Gamefreak on that. *But* - sadly, they Nerfed Protean!!!!!!!!! Boooo!! Put it back Gamefreak!
And at least Sprigatito started standing up from the middle evo instead of becoming bipedal out of nowhere (looking at you, Torracat and Incineroar).

Skeledirge overtook Charizard becoming my favorite pokemon of all time over night. As someone who's from Tucson, where Dia De Los Muertos is celebrated I really love everything about it. His name is on point with skele = skeleton and dirge = lament of the dead.
It's based on Dia De Los Muertos, and alebrijes. The fire at the corners of his mouth are not flames, but marigolds. They line ofrendas and their scent and bright colors guide spirits to them. It's executed better in game, where you see the petals flow through the orange. The colorful head is based on sugar skulls, another big thing for Dia De Muertos. It's a Mexican holiday, but has roots in Medieval Europe and Spain. Dirges are more Catholic based than Dia De Muertos, but again works with this Spanish crocodile Pokemon since Spain's major religion is Christianity/Catholicism. And the reason why they colonized Mexico was to spread that religion across the Americas.

I think a really cool explanation as to why primape evolves into annihilape is because when it gets so mad it dies, and it has to use RAGE punch 20 TIMES to evolve into a GHOST/fighting type pokemon.

I personally like iron treads a lot more than most iron variants due to how it isn’t just a robo version but the face and head have been altered and lost to time, to the point the nose is just an actual tread, referencing the name

I love Kinggambit cause I’m chess there is an opening in chess called the King’s Gambit and in it you sacrifice some pawns for an advantage and Kinggambit gets stronger the more Pokémon are fainted on your team

Fuecoco: 10/10. A bean.
Crocalor: 9/10. A bean with a sombrero. Saved my own backdoor sombrero against kofu.
Skeledirge: 11/10. What can I say. A giant fire croc. Swept Larry, grusha, geeta (AAT (Academy Ace Tournament) because I gave it earth power).
Tinkaton isn’t like Thor but in its pokedex entry, it says it launches rocks at Corviknight for fun.
Sprigatito's second stage is oddly my favorite , probably because it's body shape is litrally just a kemono fursuit,like you could litrally not modify anything about it's desing and turn it into a fursuit

I always saw Dunsparce as the Middle-finger pokemon, so i am really happy with Dudunsparce because it couldn't be a more perfect Middle finger of a evolution to Him. It really does show the "F-You" motiff of dunsparce.
