This is ten times easier than my brain was thinking it to be! I never got the hang of crocheting when I was younger and I just gave up with it, but now with a video showing me how ridiculously simple a border is, I can finally finish a baby blanket I've been agonizing over! Thanks!!!
Just subscribed. I lost your channel and just found it again. I love your videos. You have a very soothing voice and don’t talk, talk, talk. Love your knitting. Thank you for taking the time to show us a variety of knitting and tips.
This was a brilliant video for a person who has never done crochet before and the knitting pattern asked for a crochet border, really easy to follow. Thank you
I really like how clear your video is. Like the black background too as it helps with added clarity when you're really just learning.Thank you for taking the time to make such a great simple & clear tutorial
this video was perfect for me because im a guy and its really simple and slow , ive been knitting for about a month just a few scarfs but i started a throw about a week ago and i finished it last night, and i needed something for around the edges and this stitch was perfect! so thanks :D
As an avid knitter, crochet has always intrigued, but scared me. When a knitted ear flap hat called for a crochet border, I found your video and I now have a lovely finishing on my new hat. Thanks so much!
Thanks so much. Before my mother died last year I got her permission to finish her knitted blanket. Did that and all ok. But I’ve never known how to crochet and she always crocheted the border. I’ve looked up many tutorials but yours gives me what I need. Because this is such an emotionally driven project you’ll understand how important it is that now I can finish it and she’d be pleased. 🙏
Thank you so much with this video. Very helpful that your background was dark so I can really see how you did the corners. I will be applying this technique when I come to the border part of my blanket. Thank you again.
I truly like your manner of instruction and clearcut way of doing the border. Thank you so much. I was getting anxious how to do the border, but you enlighten us how to do it.
well i'm french and really don't understand what said ^^' BUT this video help more than all of the other french video i see ... I make a blanket and i want to make a crochet border :) So thank you very much and BRAVO !
Sooooo glad I found this video it's simple to follow instructions are perfect for anyone who wants to learn how to complete a nice simple border that works on anything that requires an edge like my blankets. Thank you for keeping it simple with clear instructions.
Awww this is what i have needed for my practicing. I have gotten around the corners, but they don't look great. Love youtube for this reason. Thank you very much. Now I know how to do this properly.
Thank you so very much! I could not figure out how to crochet 🧶 the corners. Your video helped tremendously! You explained the technique perfectly. ✌🏼💗🙏🏼🥰
Thank you sooo much for this video. For years I've been struggling to get my fingers to work with a crochet hook but you make it so easy to follow that not only have I added the crochet border I came looking for but I've also joined a CAL & crocheted ''popcorn'! :)
Thank you so much for your tutorial. I came across the end of my first project in my book for a coaster and got all kinds of confused on the directions for the border. Thanks to your video I understand sooooo much better. Thank you
Thank you so much for this video. I just made my very first afghan and wanted to learn how to do a boarder on my own without my moms help and this did the trick. :)
I love this video and every video you do because of how soothing your voice is, how nice and slowly you show us the techniques and because of what a great attitude you have. No need for getting panicked about things and I like that. My question is about why crochet seems less soft than knitting. I've seen nothing about this anywhere. An internet search assumes people mean how to make scratchy yarn less scratchy (with vinegar, etc.), but that's not what I mean. I have noticed that the very same yarn that is soft in the knitted area, is not as soft in the crocheted border. I'm working with a Spud and Chloe washable wool and organic cotton combo and there's a definite difference in the softness. I've also noticed it with the Debbie Bliss Eco Baby prints. The knitted part is soft as ever and the crocheted border is not. I'm guessing it's about the structure of the stitch or how tense my stitches are. Some say it's not the crocheting but the yarn. But I've observed that is not true. Do you know why this is? I'm making a blanket for my soon-to-arrive grandson and I want it all to be really soft. Thanks so much!!!
+Felicia Thomas I think the construction of the crochet stitches is what makes the fabric more dense or stiff feeling than knitted fabric, generally speaking. That being said, in my opinion there are a number of factors that come into play that determine the feel of your finished piece. There are knit stitches that can make a very dense, stiff fabric without a lot of stretch, and there are some very lacy crochet stitches that can produce a finer, lighter fabric. I do think the fiber and weight of yarn used plays a part, but not the whole, in how the finished fabric feels also. Alpaca for example does not have the resilience or memory of sheep's wool, so if you used a light weight alpaca yarn with a lace crochet stitch, you'd end up with a softer, lighter fabric with drape. Basically, it is a combination of the stitch used, the fiber used, and the weight of yarn used. I am sure others disagree with my opinion, but that's what I am stickin' to ;-)
+iknitwithcatfur And let me add, your personal tension can play a part also, which is why you can very often use a different needle size than called for in a pattern to get the required gauge.
+iknitwithcatfur Thank you so much for your insight and for taking the time to reply! I did end up going with a hook one size larger and also being very conscious about keeping my stitches more relaxed, and that helped a lot. So interesting about the differences in resilience and memory. This fiber world is so fascinating! Thank you so very much for all you do to help us all! :)
Thank you for this simple to follow guide. I made a baby blanket entirely made of single crochet stitches for my brothers on the way kid and i wanted to add a border to it to make it stand out a bit (it's pure white because at the time that was the only baby soft yarn i had) I have been crocheting for a little while but have never changed yarn colors before and wasn't sure how to do it. So i looked it up and happened across this video.
Thank you for the simple, clear instructions. I am knitting a scarf that is worked in a stockinette stitch pattern, and I've noticed that the sides are curling inward a bit even though I have included a 3-stitch garter stitch border along both sides. Would adding a single crochet edge around the scarf correct the curling? Thank you.
Haha, it took me a long time to realize that nobody is going to notice a little mistake and to just let it go. One of my first projects had what I thought was a major mistake, I was on row 75 and just ripped the whole thing out. If I had that to do over, I would just shrug it off and keep going. Maybe an experienced knitter, looking very closely, would notice minor things, but nobody else :-)
Love this video! I didnt do the slipped stich part and am having a hard time doing the border with bernat handicrafter yarn(im not sure if im using the wrong size hook or what)- do you have any tips please? thank you!

Started knitting two weeks ago, I’m very slow at learning but managed to knit a scarf with garter stitch, then I noticed a hole in the middle! 😮Then I ran out of yarn! 😭 I’ve sort of rectified it myself because I couldn’t find a specific tutorial for these glitches 😕 So, I wanted a border around my scarf and trolled through soooo many vids 😳 then I found yours 🙏🧶
I have a pattern calling for single crochet around the armholes of a stockinette vest. But when I do that into every stitch the armholes become weird- like the fabric looks wavy and flared, and not in a cute way. Should I skip every other row and only single crochet into every other stitch? Every 3rd stitch? Thanks for all your great videos.
***** The swatch is just plain garter stitch - I do have videos for the knit stitch using both Continental and English method of knitting. You should find those in the Knitting Basics Playlist.
Hi I am new at knitting but i have been crocheting for years . My first project i thought i make mitered squares so i can make a hoodie scarf . but my problem was connecting the squares . Thank you for making this video it helps a lot . Have a question though what cast on did you use and what salvage and bind off did you use ?
you are the first person I've seen crochet the same way I do. you don't feel the need to wrap it around your finger and lift it up in the air. it's so much easier the way we do it, huh?
The square is knit, it is called garter or knit stitch. You can find videos on how to do that in this playlist: ua-cam.com/play/PLD5DA11EF5EB6020F.html

I did the slip stitch on the end. I'm doing a crotchet edge because the slip stitch made the edge curl under some. Now with the crochet edge it put these holes. Is there anyway I can fix this?
Hi, same as Zisskeit. I have been trying to achieve a clean side edge for ages, I slip the first stitch, but it still looks as if I have knitted it, like in this video. Could you please make a video showing how you achieve these V shapes on the side of garter stitch? It will make such a huge difference to my work!!!
Here is seed stitch border ua-cam.com/video/9U03kM3xQPc/v-deo.html and if you want a garter stitch border check this out ua-cam.com/video/lK3fejWU8DI/v-deo.html
Your cast off along the top is so loose!! I have also done the loose slip stitch along the sides but my cast off is too tight to crochet. How did you do that?
Ok so I'm making a blanket using several knitted squares, should I edge each square before sewing them together or just edge the blanket after it's finished???
All of the knitted blankets I have seen made from individual squares were not edged separately - but I don't see why you couldn't do it that way if you wanted to. I would make the blanket a bit bigger of course, but if you aren't looking for an exact size then that wouldn't be an issue.
@@iknitwithcatfur Thank you for your reply I'm not concerned about the blanket being a bigger size if it will improve it and help it last longer. Once again thank you for your helpful response.
I'm working on a blanket and I find this tutorial REALLY helpful and easy to follow but I do have one question: what would I do if I wanted the border to be more than 1 row/line? I used a stocking stitch for my knitting so does the crochet need to change at all or do I do the exact same thing you did in the video? I've never crocheted before. lol
Do it just like in the video. I have very poor crochet skills, so if I can do it, so can you :-) I usually have to rip it out and start over a few times, but practice makes perfect.
iknitwithcatfur Okay! Lol it looks so confusing just watching it, but I'm gonna try it on a few little pieces first to make sure I'm doing it right! Then if it goes well I'll do it to my blanket! Thank you!!
Do I have to use the same weight yarn? I am doing a baby blanket and want to add a border that is a different weight than the chunky yarn used for the blanket.
Okay, but how do you pick up stitches on the bumpy side of a garter stitch blanket that HASN'T had the the slipped stitches making a nice, clean edge??
you mentioned that you slipped the beginning of each row...... how do you do that? I make pillows for people and would like to learn how to make it easier to crochet the 2 sides together. The sides where the "v's" are not present are tricky when trying to join together
Thanks so much for your tutorial. I usually knit an i-cord edging for projects. I recently bought a new i-phone so I`m knitting me a cover for it in fair isle. As soon as it's done I`m going to crochet a border on it. This could end up being my preferred method for finishing off afghans. It looks a lot quicker too.

Judy Wagner You should use whatever size hook is appropriate for your yarn. The ball band or tag on the yarn should give a recommended hook size.

Quick question
When finishing up a crochet project for adding a border of the same yarn used for the project, do you continue or fasten off first?
I would just go right into the border.
iknitwithcatfur awesome thank you so much 😊

I used the long tail cast on and standard knitted bind off.
Thanks
So simple and easy, I love it!
Thank you so much, i just finished my first border🙂
How would you continue that to make it five lines thick? Slip stitch into the starting point and just keep going around?
Yes, that will work.

Hi. What do you do with the yarn that was still on the hook at the end?
Just snip the yarn, leaving about an inch of tail and then you can weave it in with a yarn needle or even use the crochet hook to weave in.

It doesn't look right when I do it. It is possible you could post a short close up video so I can see it please? Thanks.
That looks really good! Thanks for the help!
I would like to go around three times can you show me how please
So helpful. Just what I needed. Thanks!
wonderful ! It does gives a great finishing touch to a project .
Great video, very easy to follow. Thanks
I love your video..thank you..will try this on one of my blankets..giving it a prettier edge!! Awesome!!
you mentioned that you slipped the beginning of each row...... how do you do that? I make pillows for people and would like to learn how to make it easier to crochet the 2 sides together. The sides where the "v's" are not present are tricky when trying to join together

Thanks so much for your tutorial. I usually knit an i-cord edging for projects.
I recently bought a new i-phone so I`m knitting me a cover for it in fair isle. As soon as it's done I`m going to crochet a border on it. This could end up being my preferred method for finishing off afghans. It looks a lot quicker too.
Love the video, first tutor I've seen that holds the yarn the same way I do. Except I'm left handed! Lol.
Thank you for great, easy to understand instructions! :)
