Missing that childhood is one aspect. But, the simplicity and effectiveness of those stories is what we miss the most. Look at the comedies of 2000s and compare them with recent comedic disasters. Simplicity of dialogues and storytelling is what makes 99% of those earlier films so memorable.
Edit: Wow, i didn't know so many people agreed with my perspective. Thanks for the likes guys!! 🫶🏾

Ultimately every actor at the end of the day has to put food on the table for himself / herself and their families. So before your pursuit to experiment ends up burning a hole in the pockets of your producers, it's better to deviate towards what is best liked by the large population of your core audience. If you want to still keep experimenting with your roles, become a co-producer and show the willingness to absorb those financial shocks if in worst case your project flops.
      That's the standard mentality

So what if Guzaarish is being recognised now? But at that time people were skeptical even to go and watch films with such subjects.
The problem is with majority of the Indian audience. They should not be only confined to a certain genre of commercial mass movie, but also should learn to watch, experience and shower love and support on creative films with beautiful and unique subject like Guzaarish.
Doing well in the box office is ultimately the goal for any movie. If that doesn't happen, inspite of the film being good in terms of it good subject and storyline; naturally filmmakers and actors becomes dejected in choosing such scripts from next time.

Not just critically acclaimed it has become a huge commercial success so much so its still running in packed houses in many screen in its 12th week even after releasing in OTT. I think it's a combination of the factors combined.
    1. Times were simpler back then which was reflected in movies as well. We weren't constantly stimulated like we are now hence were able to enjoy whatever we could see. Society has seen drastic changes in past 1 decade.
    2. There is this human aspect to it that we tend to forget the bad times (unless it's something monumental) and hence same goes for the movies we saw. I remember mocking Imran Khan back in 2009 especially after his movie Kidnap and Luck released but now I look at those movies and feel nostalgic. It has nothing to do with the quality of cinema but my current situation which is kinda stressful compared back then. At the same time, comedies were really good and simple. They weren't trying to make us laugh intentionally contrary to what current movies try to do.
    3. Our understanding has really evolved; we are discussing the movies lot more due to social media and hence this scrutiny which was absent back then.
    4. We all are Nostalgia merchants: Pretty sure 10 years down the lane we will feel nostalgic about movies today done by Arjun Kapoor remembering songs from Two states and Ishaqzaade.
    5. Increasing competition and decentralisation of entertainment: We are exposed to so many movies and TV series that it is difficult to create novelty. Hence risk taking is also becoming difficult because then one has to come up something very intriguing and new to gain same commercial success. One has to tap in into some unchartered territory to get that attention
    6. We as audience are hypocritical: We don't award good movies being made rather go with the trend. And this is not something new but was there since past many decades.

This has maybe motivated many actors to skip movies which might be a success in that space rather than in theatres. Now audiences have made a clear choice to pivot to theatres for the big budget star films or a visually appealing vfx heavy film in fantasy genre. Very few mid budget alternative genre film can find space in theatres now as we can watch them in ott. Animal was an experimental film despite being a commercial film. It wasn’t just an action hero without a personality . Sandeep reddy vanga’s characters have a personality, even though they may be morally corrupt. At least the unpredictable actions of the main character keep you engaged, rather than just a hero who has no other personality other than being strong and loud

This experience prompted a reevaluation of his choices, leading to a shift towards more commercial projects( FIGHTER,WAR 2 ,KRRISH 4 ).However, His words underscored a genuine wish to be introduced with a focus on his craft as an actor, rather than a superstar . Fantastic topic. An exception for (despite his inteview) is Ranbir Kapoor. He is willing to take the risk and irrespective of movie performance and content this guys brand is untouched. Maybe because he seems ballsy by nature and perhaps sheltered by his family lineage (we forgive easily) and yes he is that damn talented.
    But...
Not all films have a theatrical audience. Stars by nature were made in Theatrical. I do not believe new stars can be made in OTT. OTT can provide a great platform for Creators but it feels too common and accessible and loses the mystique of stardom. But the conundrum is that Stars are made by the audience in theTheatre. Fans ask for Prawn and Chicken Masala Biryani Noodles but actually want Dhal and Roti every day from their moms. This is the issue with Bollywood and Tollywood right now. Stars are unable to take risks. I believe Tamil and more especially Malayalam is able to have audiences who can cheer for their stars.
I do miss these risks in Bollywood from the Mainstream Stars but it has come with Brickbats for the Stars and we will never see this era again. Because it hurts their brand. Somehow we are more forgiving towards our Actresses than we are to the Actors. That topic for another day.
Actors like Saif and Ajay can take risks as they are neither Superstars nor bound by Stardom.

    So many reasons:
1.Ticket prices in Multiplexes are prohibitive and easily avoided for a nuanced film when you can wait for an OTT release.
2.Actors charging huge amounts which forces Producers to make movies which have a high probabilty of breaking even at the least.
3.Polarising politics and danger of violence
4.The audience is largely male and rarely prefer women lead films unless the gaze is male and hypersexualised.
    5.Stars and their megalomania.

Sure, because of nostalgia we associate more to certain movies but we still enjoy them today which proves their quality and that they have stood the test of time. To give an example, I recently watched a Hollywood classic "singing in the rain" in an open theatre and I just loved that movie and that movies is from 1952, even our parent were not born then so forget about us. So their is only a partial merit to the childhood theory.
