The themes explored in movies directed by #karanjohar , like the #srk starrer KABHI ALVIDA NAA KEHNA, the kjo produced Gehraiyaan starring #deepikapadukone or the recent romance with Dharmendra and Shabana Azmi in Rocky Aur Raani Kii Prem Kahaani. I have watched Rocky Rani 3 times and honestly i didn't liked the film. Pretty generic nothing extraordinary.

Cheating is a choice and leaves a deep impact on the partner, and the cheating partner is always aware of it. I don't think any Bollywood movie has ever sensibly depicted the trauma of the cheated partner😢

Don't know if this comes under "glorifying", but many movies (especially the comedies) do give the message that even if your partner cheats on you, you should try and get them back.
The classic movies even excused r*pe. So I don't think anyone is surprised!

As per sequels of masti yes they were definitely the one glorifying the infidelity

I felt the last season of Four More Shots Please also normalised cheating in an extremely weird manner when Damini cheated on Jeh, who was a total green flag, and then blamed him for her infidelity stating some obscure reason of coming on too strong/not giving her enough space, or something like that. That storyline left me disturbed and made me cringe.
💯 By the end of the last episode, Damini was so toxic to digest. I mean all the Main Leads in that drama are flawed when it comes to relationships but she was something else. She gaslighted herself to believe she was cheating because of Jeh 🤯

Also worth including the story of Shilpa Shetty and KK Menon from Life in a metro. While Menon is sleeping around with his young employee Kangna, Shilpa is frustratingly resisting going intimate with Shiney Ahuja. Finally when Menon finds out about her and Shiney, he goes berserk to humiliate Shilpa.. but defends his own cheating as “purely physical nothing emotional”. Hypocrisy much?!
And Shilpa's charecter was dumb enough to be with that jerk Menon's charecter.
Yes, it was hypocrisy, and the movie never tried showing him in a good light. He was shown as one of the most despicable characters in the movie. That’s the point. The problem starts where/when a movie plot tries to justify one’s infidelity in the backdrop of the partner being this and that.

@@Characteredits709 Does the movie or the director show him as a good person? Does the movie try to lure the audience into having sympathy for him? No. A big no. He is shown as an extremely flawed person, and I don’t remember a single scene where the director tried showing him in good light. It doesn’t matter whether he had guilt or not, because the movie isn’t trying to portray him a moralistic guy. The director isn’t trying to virtue signal the audience about having pity for him, unlike Four more shots, in which the director is trying to justify the various unethical and immoral decisions taken by the 4 main characters.
Silsila is literally a real life documentary...a lot of respect for Amitji...Jayaji and Rekhaji for actually working for YRF!!

I hated KANK because they ended the movie with a happily-ever-after of the two cheaters and made it look like, "Oh, Dev and Maya finally found true love! How romantic!" People say it shows reality of society, but it doesn't at all.The movie does end with a slight note that cheating is bad, but it feels forced. The entire movie says otherwise. In my opinion, the movie should have focused on Preity and Abhishek's struggle instead of making it a Rani-Srk love story. They showed cheating in a positive light focusing on "true love, etc" instead of bringing light to the harm it caused to everyone else.
Agreed. Cheating does happen in real life but not with the singing and dancing they showed in KANK. Only a pure narcissist enjoy cheating. Others often go through periods of shame and guilt during affairs
And then there was a serial after this cheat glorified movie called " silsila badalte rishte ka" Aired on colors.
Being cheated on by your partner is the most traumatising thing one has to go through. Imagine loving only one person with all your heart and sincerely, than all of a sudden wondering everytime if what wrong dud you do for this to happen.
For me, the infidelity shown in Masoom hits like a ton of bricks, because the affair is in the distant past but there's a byproduct of it infront of the wife's face. On one side she's shattered that her husband did this to her but the illicit child has a face that melts your heart.

I think Dil Dhadakne Do shows a very realistic potrayal of cheating. Like how Anil Kapoor cheats on his wife but in the end his wife forgives him not because she loves him but that she has nowhere else to go. Likewise Priyanka's character is also seen cheating on her husband who is abusive, misogynist and controlling and she chooses the option of divorce because she can make that choice unlike her mother.
Reema and zoya are mature writers. Their characters have depth so their function is not just about justification but also the dichotomy and double standards
Towards the end of KANK, when Maya & Rhea meet again (after 3 yrs), Rhea tells Maya how she (Rhea) & Rishi have moved on, while Maya & Dev are still stuck in the past. This is another scene that shows how KANK doesn't glorify the cheating.
@@rajattyagi8963because they aren't meant to be defend. They are the villains of the movie and are shown as failures throughout. That is why their spouses are shown as great people while they suck.
@@rajattyagi8963 they aren't celebrated outside of their own perspective and that too crumbles towards the third act. In the first act we are meant to understand their loveless relationships and how they are also at fault for it. In the third act we are shown the consequences of their actions.

Even Pati , Patni aur woh was also glorifying cheating...In the whole movie they justified Kartik's Character,compared him with PRABHU SRI RAM and at the end tried to balance it through a monologue of Bhumi..

He did not cheat, he was just a man looking for some companionship & as soon as he realized he crossed the line during the club scene and ananya's backstory, he backs off.

So, bhoomi's character also did the same, she spun a web of lies to make him suffer and pay for his actions.
But bhoomi also didn't cross the point of no return.
We can't always judge every comedic subplots with a critical eye, as comedy by its very nature is meant to be offensive.
That was my only concern with Rocky and Rani. They literally gave no redemption to Dhanlaxmi. When Dharmendra kissed Shabana, her reaction felt more like a son brought home a girl she didn't like, rather than a wife who was betrayed.
I loved Dharmendra and Shabanaz's chemistry. While she was justified because her husband was abusive, Dhanlaxmi and Kanwal's dynamic was monotone.
That being said, I love an old people romance story.
That justification itself was very shallow because of the moment it was placed and way it was delivered. She was like you guys think my cheatin is bad but nooo it isnt because heres mah sad backstory. If it was put in an apt way maybe it would have meant more
I get what you mean. I think divorce for any reason is more common and acceptable in todays generation. While of course it was wrong for Kanwal to cheat on his wife, it also begs the story of being in an emotionally unfulfilling relationship for him all his life. He was also unwell and unable to revive his memories so the whole : he could divorce her if he wanted

No one does till they are trapped in the same situation themselves. There are very few salacious people out there, most people don't intend to cheat on their partners but a lot of cheating happens in this world, regardless. Human emotions are quite complicated.
Chokher Bali is a film that needs to be discussed I feel . Based on Tagore's novel of the same name, the various pov's baffle thr viewers. This film was a masterpiece regarding male infidelity

Every relationships has its ups and downs and Rani was really well treated by Abhishek although he had childish character still she left for srk. And srk himself had ego issues with his wife which is justifiable but cheating on her was kinda too much.

I think stable and happy relationships can come across as boring on screen, cheating is seen as a kind of emotional thriller too. That's why most romatic films are either of falling in love with someone new or cheating in relationships, long term great relationships are always the backdrop of a story and not the actual storyline. Also we Indians always root for the hero and heroine, so they have to make them somewhat redeemable and not make them be completely in the wrong, therefore glorifying them. Because you almost always see the story from their perspective and cheaters will always try to justify it somehow to reduce the guilt which comes with the affair. Like KANK for me did glorify it, the realistic approach would have been that one couple separates but the other for whatever reason does not, and therefore cheating just leads to hurt and there is no perfect happily ever after on the other side of it.

I was thinking about it while watching Rocky and rani where jaya bacchan who made the whole empire was just disregarded and that point when mother of rocky yells at her husband after being obedient and suffering for so long and when he said sorry for all , she started shouting ..the reaction was over the top ....that sudden courage and his reaction to jaya ji...was like....wth !! Like one-sided story it felt
I watched Rocky aur Rani very recently online, and this issue really stuck out for me. I went through some of its reviews and was so perplexed that no one was talking about it!
Frankly the matter of cheating needs to be understood in the context of the times we live in. As a modern day woman, I believe its unacceptable. You should first separate from your partner in case of issues and then move on to someone else.
But lets go back 30-40 years in a world where women weren't financially independent. Many women married to bollywood folks...Salma Khan, Raj babbar's wife, Mithun's wife, Dharmendra's wife etc gladly accepted their husbands simply coz they had kids with them. So a lot changes when you have a big family to support!
I always feel that morals can be enforced only when you are comfortable with money.

I was eagerly waiting for you to talk about this issue. KANK is personally one of my favourite SRK romantic movies along with KHNH and Veer Zaara. And those saying that is glorifies cheating, there's a closing dialogue by him in the movie where Dev says that although he and Maya found love in each other towards the end, he wished that it didn't have to come at a cost of breaking their respective partners' heart.
Its probably the most nuanced take regarding extramarital affairs. There was a constant burden of guilt and sadness that consumed both Dev and Maya. It broke their families, the acknowledgment is always there of its destructive nature rather than showcasing the same union as being something rosy and beautiful

KANK and Gehraiyaan show that Dev and Alisha face consequences due to their actions.

The justification is that it was a loveless marriage and the relationships more or less became that of a caretaker and patient rather than a husband and wife. A lack of acknowledgment of each other as partners. But it was a two way street : that's often overlooked

You are right! Loveless marriage isn't a justification for cheating. Both the man and woman have the right and opportunity to end the marriage via divorce. More so in this day and age that the movie was depicted. It certainly didn't help that the lovable protagonist were shown to help them with the affair right under their parent's noses and that wasn't made an issue. Rather their cultural differences was the main point of focus.

Finally someone called out the weirdness of Mahesh Bhatt presenting his affair with Parveen Babi. Like, imagine being broke and mentally unwell while someone you haven't met for ages is earning from your name and making steamy romance films about your affair.
I think since the 80s and 90s cheating and polygamy is often glorified in Indian cinema across Industries in the name of comedies and romance, and it has made the audience quite immune to it, But the irony is in slapstick comedies people will often take it as a comedic gag but the moment this subject is dealt in a more serious film it becomes a taboo or trying to ruin society🙄 I find movies like Kaathuvaakula Rendu Kaadhal(2022) more disturbing than movies like Gehraiyaan coz unlike the former the latter isn't rewarded for it 😅But the amount of hate Gehraiyaan got shows the double standard of the audience😢
Gehraiyaan hate is so surface level. I remember people simply dismissing it because Deepika was scantily clad. Absolutely no discussion of its themes and relationships explored

Me and my mom literally gasped when we saw the kissing scene in rocky and Rani we were so shocked and my mom instantly said “this is too much Han” while people were clapping and hooting.....and we thought that this is wrong on so many levels!!

Exactly my point guys and Shahid (Aditya K) says that she (his mom) was wrong in what she did. I’m not saying that the idea of falling out of love with someone and then falling in love with someone out of the marriage is completely alright but the idea needs to communicated in a particular manner I feel which was missing and yes love does not give you the license to cheat, if people understand infidelity, relationship dynamics then we can conclude that it was wrong on multiple levels and Shahid said about her mother in the start in right.

The way Bollywood has knowingly or unknowingly glorified cheating by men through comedic gags and chauvinistic portrayal is noteworthy.
Of all the movies that you have mentioned here, I felt a sense of empathy towards Tabbu's character in Astitva, perhaps because of the way the film was narrated and how it ended.
This stuck out as such a sore thumb for me throughout rarkpk, the way cheating was not even questioned, and everyone loved the movie somehow! Thank you for putting the problematic way bollywood handles infidelity in a video
It's also noticeable that some directors just keep showing cheating, betrayal of partners in form of love stories ....a glorified director like SLB has done this repeatedly, many of David Dhawan's movies presented this with comic angle, KJo had this as main theme in movies like KANK , even in Student of the year , cheating was the thing what ignited the fire ....personal choice or something else?
Oh finallyyyyy . For years now I’ve seen movies which in the name of misunderstanding or comedy have glorified cheating and I would always wonder if the audience is expected to root for them . From movies like biwi number one in the 90s to RARKPK this was one thing that somehow didn’t change . I understand showing it in the movies that affairs are something that happen in real life but not giving it the explanation or conclusion it deserves and somehow we are expected to believe as if it is acceptable . KANK was not only about Dev and Maya love story, it was also about how Rishi and Ria were strong enough to forgive them and move on.
But their POV is given less focus, it would have been more ideal if director thought of it rather than adding cringe scenes in between 😅
People should stop thinking of divorce as a drama. Unfortunately they prefer to dtay in an unhappy marriage than to move on. I love KANK a lot. Very honest film about relationships in a marriage
My aunts used to watch Astitva multiple times as it used to be telecasted on Doordarshan several times back in the day. As a kid I used to get bored and never understood the depth of the movie. Now as an grown up, I understand the complications involved in relationships, commitments, infidelity.
Haven’t watched other movies but in Rocky and Rani, speaking on behalf of Dharmendra it’s essential to reflect on compassion, empathy and care that are cornerstones of relationship. She kept him parched of his deep emotional needs. If you don’t love don’t expect loyalty. She literally denied him the love of his son.

I did not like KANK as it had a happy ending for the cheaters. However Gehraiyan was more realistic in its ending, as so many such relations end in crimes. Rocky and Rani well I felt very bad for Dhanlaxmi as Bollywood always shows practical abd strong matriarchs as villians.
I wish if you could have included Tara from Made in heaven. I think she lost it all when her mother in law accepted her son's gf coz she was pregnant and also had a room getting ready for baby. Tara was negative but she was faithful in her marriage and was betrayed not only by her husband but also her mother in law who was ready to accept her son instead of dumping him and supporting Tara but that's Indian mind set coz beta to beta hota hai and bahu wahi jo bacha de.
Yes ! That's what she said to her MIL "I'm treating you just the way you treated me". She was a good DIL all in all before - made appearances before MIL's kitty party ladies, tried for baby because they were indirectly taunting her MIL, emotionally supported her MIL when her husband passed away (even though she was in the process of getting divorced). Her MIL basically made her go through all the emotional toil alongside her. In a way, she felt even more backstabbed and cheated by her MIL accepting another DIL than her own husband cheating.
But didn’t Tara begin her relationship on a betrayal? Everyone faced their karma in the end.
@@PayalTravelToMuse I don't think Adil faced any karma. He lost his mansion but not like he was very fond of it. He got chick, baby, his mother on his side all his friends so technically he was not at loss. Tara as I said was a negativ3 character but when married to him she stayed faithful and did everything to make that marriage work and was even ok with divorce until she saw her MIL betraying her supporting her son and gf. She gave emotional support to her MIL aftr her husband demise while her son was busy making out with his gf than supporting his mom. Tara was heartbroken the time she saw how her MIL even knowing how it feels to be betrayed aftr marriage was easy on her son coz aftr all Tara was nothing more than DIL without a child. Women not supporting women is another level of betrayal and makes it easy for men to cheat and still not face any consequences.

Also I was calling out on how her MIL was quick to accept her son and his gf coz she was pregnant. Bollywood movies don't "glorify" cheating but they fail to show realistic consequences. It's never the act of the cheating that ruins a relationship, it's the betrayal. Regardless of the reason, if you shouldn't have to lie to your partner. There are valid reasons that may led someone to cheat but there is no justification for lying about it. Either leave or stop cheating, don't continue to lie. Once trust is broken, it's impossible to repair.
A very nuanced example is The Lunchbox. You root for the couple because they aren't pursuing a relationship for selfish reasons. They have mutual respect for how their established lives will be affected.
Really glad you made this video Anmol. Been mulling over the romabticizing of cheating in bollywood/ott for a while. The best arc I've seen although is in the hotstar series 'out of love'. It shows every emotion in the cycle and is carried by amazing actors as well esp. Rasika Duggal.
I can't help but notice the irony in the casting of Rocky and Rani. Like Jaya is really the other woman in her own marriage even in real life. Dharmendra cheated on his first wife to marry Hema Malini and lastly Shabana Azmi had an affair with a married Javed Akhter until he eventually left his wife to marry her. It’s like they all have played that part in real life as well
Finally someone talking about the absurd and impactical ending of manmarziyaan...both agreeing to keeping in touch and discuss their problems would have made way more sense...it was a total matlab-kuchh-bhi moment.
This video deserves a part two. In Humpty Sharma ki Dulhaniya, the girl was already engaged, still she had an affair with Humpty. In Love Aaj Kal, Meera sort of cheats on her partner and dumps him just after getting married. In Tamasha, Tara spends time with Ved 'Don' while she already had a boyfriend in India. This is much more common in Imtiyaz Ali films.

Lately I had become upset thinking that I am the only one who finds infidelity a deal breaker and I cringed through all the movies which tried to normalise it. For me what is worse than Bollywood's glorification of adultery is the expectation that a woman should readily accept and love her husband's child outside of marriage. Such a situation is beyond heart breaking for a woman but bollywood expects women to just get over it. It can be seen in movies like Main Hoon Na, Masoom and every other tv serial. The ONLY movie to show the reverse was Kya Kehna.

Well, over the past few days, I've seen a variety of posts and articles on Instagram as well where the public is split over the Rocky and Rani plot. For some people, it was justified; for others, it wasn't. In my opinion, Bollywood tries to take this subject in some way every time, whether as the main plot or just a side plot, but they never manage to pull it off. It was Jaya Ji's character in the film Rocky and Rani, which may have been scripted to make us blame her.Bollywood films have somehow failed to do these serious and delicate subjects justice. If the film has a popular hero, the storyline will present him as a decent guy; if the film has a medical cast, the plot will simply leave the matter left to the viewers' decision. Cheating in any form is never justifiable, but if we look to Bollywood movies for a lesson in it, we will be disappointed. Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna was slightly better in this situation, but the background supplied to the characters was not up to par, but they managed to improve it in the end.

If we talk about KANK, the whole idea was to say if you are unhappy in marriage, it's ok to end it and don't have to push it till old age. Shahrukh said this in an interview with komal nahta at the time of Don's release which was few months after KANK.
Well they didn't end the marriage but they cheated on their spouse. Also, SRK's character was as* so even in future is Maya start taking stand he going to wine or run from that relationship.

Just to correct you on your analysis of Kanwal and Dhanlaxmi. The affair between Kanwal and Jamini probably happened after their marriage ( As Shabana Azmi's character says to Rani, that "we were both married" and mentioned that they met in 1978, which I am assuming was after both were married according to everyone's age), so the disdain on Kanwal's face was not because he was hungover on Jamini
That was my biggest point against rocky weds rani. I was surprised none of the critics found it as bad messaging in a movie which was otherwise full of preachy messaging!!

We can always look for a moral high ground in movies.. but the fact is that these are stories about people.. those who also exist in real life ... that people are imperfect and always choosing based on their own way of making sense of things... it's not glorification unless u show it blatantly in movies like no entry. Great video. This was needed to be called out. I also want to add another story which is rather forgotten or given not much thought. The characters of Shilpa Shetty and Kay Kay Menon in Life in a Metro. The ending of their story didn't sit well with me. Even of Shilpa realized that she needs to put effort in her loveless marriage, Kay Kay menon's character only "realized" when Kangana left him. It was more of a convenience rather than a realization. But it was showed as if he got the realization. This always irked me as how nobody really acknowledges Kay Kay's process of getting back together with Shilpa
You spoke my heart off! I was with Jaya’s character in the beginning she was happy bride and turned bitter as she did not get love from her husband. Then you brought her husbands love in fornt of her kissing her husband who would never have shown any such gesture towards her. I fell sick and my heart aced only for her character in the movie and the fact that everyone was okay with the story and enjoyed it made me sad. Thanks for speaking on this. I feel heard.

In Life in a Metro, the plot between Shipla Shetty and Kay Kay Menon also suggests cheating. Even though they both cheat on their partners, I could totally relate to Shipa's yearning for a happy and fulfilling life. Particularly when "Hai tujhe bhi ijaajath karle tu bhi Mohobath." was playing. Although we are all aware that Kay Kay Meonon's actions were very unacceptable, I can't blame Shipla for wanting to be loved and respected given the circumstances she was in. For me, the movie's conclusion was really shocking. I was quite let down to see that Shilpa simply chose her loveless marriage for her daughter's sake. Although I didn't mind that she didn't end up with her love interest, it was completely unacceptible that she didn't get divorce. Considering Shilapa's background, I'm not sure if the movie romanticized infidelity or not.
Because that is what most people do in their lives. Once we have a child, its no longer just about us. My parents didn't have a good marriage, the only reason my mother chose to stay in the marriage was me and my brother. I didn't understand her decision back then but now that I am much older and though I am not married or have a child, I am old enough to understand her reason. Our generation likes to use fancy words and tries to find logic in everything but we forget that we still live in the same society and human emotions work the same way as it did for our parents.

Waheeda ji's character is in a loveless marriage with a walking red flag and when she discovers him red handed on his escapade, she leaves him and falls in love with Raju Guide, who cares for her at her lowest and sympathises with her. While her archaeologist husband tried to stifle her interests and personality to maintain an image in the society, Raju fights against the society to let her be herself after years.
So ironic that such a great portrayal of love outside marriage came at a time when it was looked so negatively at, while the movies in this woke era are glorifying cheating for absurd reasons.
Kabhi Alvida na Kehna is more nuanced, that's true. Yeah that scene from the movie wherein, Rani asks Srk, 'if they'd ever be together..' from the movie is simply heart-piercing 🙂

Even in Made-in-Heaven S2, Neelam's story made me think about cheating without any consequences.
It's also interesting to see what the makers' perspectives are in real life. For example, we've seen Karan Johar on multiple occasions approve of infidelity in interviews, shows, etc., so it makes me think his movies incorporating infidelity may just justify the act of it as well, simply because he agrees with it in real life. I believe art is an extension of who you are, so in that sense, I believe many of these makers incorporate infidelity in a way that they agree with, which is problematic to say the least.

Depends... i think Karan Johar feels every infidelity occurs coz the partners are victims . People grow out of love or even suffering sometimes.

I had felt the portrayal of extra marital relationship to be so romanticized and fulfilling as if what they was the only way and absolutely right. Still feel this kind of films to be bizarre. The bangali film 'shah jahan regency' depicted the sadness in infidelity. An old woman finding her pleasure with young men or the alcoholic hotel owner who is stucked in a loveless marriage with her celebrity wife, who asks the man to cheat himself so she can file for a divorce without any issues.
One wonders if Karan Johar cooks up these relationship dynamics with a convoluted diabolical mindset or if these are reflective of what he has experienced around him in real life. As regards cheating on screen, these reflect the general happenings in Indian society albeit not necessarily in the exact same fashion as it is portrayed on film.
Bollywood does glorify infidelity. And I think the kind of world that we live in is a testament to the trend and glorification of infidelity, with relationships classified as open, friends with benefits, etc. The result? People find long-term committed relationships boring and put the relationship label on the means that justify their cheating.
Yes correct thanks for addressing this. Certain people will start glorifying cheating. When you take your marriage vows, you’re supposed to follow them. If a union can’t be maintained first separate from the person instead of cheating.

While I agree with your thoughts in RRKPK because Jaya's character was almost always shown in a negative light...
But but but, in half of the other movies we should be looking at these characters who cheat as characters, not the ideal beings. Its a movie theatre not a judge's court. It's high time we stop expecting films to portray ideal case scenarios or Karma coming the full circle by the end of the movie, because that isn't how life is.
No one is expecting movies to be ideal but it should have some sensibility. I don't believe in mindless watching. When something is produced at such a large scale it has the ability to influence people. The makers have the obligation to write a proper story and proper characters. Did RARKPKH show a real human character who was cheating like some nuanced works? They showed it like it was something to celebrate, all candy and fireworks. Showing consequences of cheating IS real not idealistic because it happens.
Also when a movie is produced for the audience, the audience has the right to reject it as much as like it. That is why you cannot say that movies cannot be judged. That's what they are there for

The only justification for Dharmendra not divorcing his wife was his last dialogue- ' beta ghar nhi toda karte'. That way of thinking may stem from the family dynamics he saw in his family or his dependence on money and business taken care of by Dhanalakshmi very well. But I feel that the kiss scene was unnecessary....is there only one way to show their soulmate bond? And jammy your thinking is just on point because I also hoped that there would be one scene where Dhanalakshmi and Dharmendra confront each other. But I don't have much sympathy for Dhanalakshmi... even after he died I couldn't see feelings on her face for once! I understand the marriage was loveless but this is pure arrogance.

I completely agree to with this. Finally someone in the comment section is sensible. Instead of bashing the characters left and right it's great to finally see someone talking sense as to where the characters were coming from. All the characters were flawed.
Jamini was sane and having faced atrocities from her husband she atleast should have known better than to kiss another person's spouse. Rani questions her morals in the climax scence where she says to Jamini that she is not good at giving relationship advice coz she has cheated on Dadu. But Jamini justifies it by saying that her husband used to hit her.
Dhanlakshmi also had to endure a loveless marriage but that does not justifies the way she treated her daughter in law. She could have easily been the better person. She could have chosen not to act like her mother in law acted towards her but she chose to follow in her mother in law's footsteps and treat her daughter in law like trash. So, yeah despite all that her character had to go through it did not generated any empathy at all.
Exactly, On this context, jammy's comment : dhanalakshi seeing the kiss like her son and daughter in law is kissing..... Is absolutely correct.... The thing is it could be a sensible relationship dynamic but these extravagant scenes ruined that. Otherwise I would love to see them together. There are loopholes in the film but somehow it has been successful to hit us because it has the heart in right place.

In Rocky and Rani ki Prem Kahaani, the kissing scene felt overrated no doubt. Yes ! They loved each other but I feel that the kissing scene was not necessary as the potryal of affection was brilliantly shown via the "Medley" song.
As far as Dhanlaxmi's character is concerned, such woman do exist in reality and even though the son's wife is part of the family, they are always an outsider in the eyes of "Dhanlaxmi". It is because of insecurity, selfish nature of "Everything is mine including the sons and no one is allowed to be shared with someone else" are a part of who they are. It is because of this, a family, no matter how good they are, break and the younger generations suffer due to unending family tensions, unnecesaary quarrels and many more. Also, this nature gets engraved in their soul so much that they never feel that they have done anything wrong. In their eyes, it was always right. So, eventually, the love and respect for them fades away from our hearts. Its true. A responsible family memeber will continue to support him/her financially or medically but the emotional connection is lost.
