Backcomb, backcombed, backcombing... running a metal toothed comb backwards through your hair to create knots. Backcombing has been a popular method for starting dreadlocks for quite some time due to the widespread availability of backcomb information as well as the relatively simple action required to form the knots.

Absolutely grand you have done this TnR and Backcomb demo!!! Lack of clear ones on UA-cam
Hey Christian! Nice choice in name. Just wanted to thank you for creating this video, I linked it as a resource in my one week dreadlock journey video's description. Cheers!
Thank you! This video was so concise and helpful :) can't wait to start my dreads tomorrow
Thank you so much for your videos! They are very helpful. I will be getting dreads tomorrow!
Glad to be able to help :)
Good luck for tomorrow!
I wish I had been able to see this when I started my dreads back in September, but I am really glad to see that I was doing it correctly after all! And, as you know, mine are over six months old now! :3 I love them!
Do you still have them
@@OnMyKneesForKidCudi I actually brushed them out at the end of 2020, but I had them for seven years. I miss them sometimes! 😭
@@ErinPanto how long did it take to brush out?
@@krjraider Oh, my goodness! It took probably a week and a half. I had about 35 of them, so I would do a little bit each day, until my hand bones got too achey. It would’ve taken much longer, but I opted to cut them in half, like Christian of LazyDreads did! It’s been over a year since I brushed them out, and my hair is longer than when I cut it to brush them out. ☺️
I'm on day 5 after backcombing how long until the "Poofs" lay down. My head looks like a bunch of mini palm trees. I started with 3-4 inches of hair also so my baby dreads are sticking up.

Starting #dreadlocks this summer?
Lazy Dreads Thanks for sharing this video. Now I know how dreadlocks are done. Very interesting! I love dreads 😍
Lazy Dreads Yes! I made my first one from reading around and decided to find a video to be sure I was doing it properly. I want very thin dreads so i started out with a tiny section and I feel like I tightened/knocked it much more than you did to the point it is at least 40% shorter than my un-knotted hair. My un-knotted hair is about the same length as the hair model in this video. Do you think I am doing it too tight, or is it just because I'm working with smaller sections of hair so it's going to compress more? Thank you for this video! You have the best dread information on the internet I've seen, and I've been looking for quite a while! :)
if i'm not mistaken, "backcombed" and "twist and rip" dreads can actually be done from 3 inches :)
Lazy Dreads Is it possible to start with back comb method just for the roots, then do the twist and rip method for the rest of the hair?
What would people say if a Mexican gets dreads?
I have had my dreads for about a week but have kept bands in them should I remove them you think?
hi started my dreads about 3 weeks ago wiyh t/r method washed it today an noticed some were only knotted at the bottom what should i do
Do you have any advice for using t+r and backcombing?
Hi! Is this method the same method you did in your hair?
Okay, so almost every video I've seen I have commented on, but with every new video, I have new questions. So, I'm sorry if you keep having to answer my questions!
Anyways. Since you've been saying it takes months to form and it looks messy, should I wait until summertime to begin forming them? Because I'm currently in a vocational school and they're very uptight about how I should look. Do you think (since I'm just considering right now) that I should wait (if I do do them)? Or that I should go ahead and do it so they're mature by the time I'm being interviewed for a job? Also, I wouldn't be asking this question, but we are not really allowed to wear any type of hat in school, or else I would get a tam hat to look more "professional," in my environment.

Lazy Dreads hey man, fan of your videos! What is the best dread method to use
How can I find someone in my city to do These dreads? I've Googled just about everything but have had no luck. I'm in Houston.
I've been to several shops and they don't so this method. Maybe you can tell me how to search this technique?
Thanks.
chicaurbana77 bruh H Town
It doesn't necessarily matter about the method they do it with bc eventually you will get the same end result. They can do a combination of twist n rip and back combing. There's also even the chance tht they do use the back combing just don't have a name for it and just do whatever to form the dreadlocks.
Twist and rip makes things dreads that fall out easy you ;not wanna use that method iv been researching for weeks B4 I started to cover all my bases. I just started my dreads this morning I rubnerbanded my hair; nto sections and backcombed then palm rolled with ORS lock and twisting gel. If u want to find someone to do it for you (I'm whiter than rice and not a racist so don't blow the next part out of proportion) look into an African American salon they tend to do dreads n stuff like that. I'm from buffalo NY n all the places that do dreads r in the hood lol!!!
should you crochet your dreads a lot to keep them looking good?
Hi! Please help. I have had my dreads for about 4months but 3 or 4 of the backcombed twists keep coming undone almost completely. Do you think if i twist and rip them up to the point where its locked they will stay or is this a bad idea? Thanks a lottt!!!!
will it look thicker and more full after a while, like yours?
I have mixed hair (white and black) probably like 6,7 inches. But my hair isnt that kinky to hold twists without gel/wax. I know wax isn't good but idk any other method to do this. Can i do the TR method? Or do u need fine hair to do that? Thanks :-)
What method did you use or did your come natural. If so what method would you recommend for straight hair
How long can/should you leave the bands in after you dreaded?
Okay thank you, now im growing out my hair for about another month what would you recommend me doing with my hair for the backcomb method?. (Besides stop conditioning and brushing)
Zack Dukes I would recommend trying out different dreadlock-appropriate shampoos so that you have found what works for you BEFORE you begin the dreadlocks. You will likely want to stop conditioning the hair as you get closer to starting backcomb dreadlocks - but you'll need to continue to brush it right up until the day you begin - if the hair has already started to knot, you won't be able to run the comb through it in order to backcomb the hair.

What do u do about washing while the locks form
What is the best method ?? For straight hair like you showed in this video

hello lazy dread i just did my dreads and was wondering about the tips they dont really stay in ore wont dread is that okay ore is thier sumthing i can do and ur videos really helpt out on the backcomb method
nick pullins Even if you backcomb right to the very end and knot them up good and tight... they'll still come loose again once you start to wash the hair. They won't be able to be knotted at the tips properly until the dreadlocks are strong enough for the tips to be knotted in.
Lazy Dreads oo okay thank u that helps out a lot man thanks

I am prepping for dreads. I have fine hair that tends to be oily because I do a lot of yoga and sweat a lot. I have hair about 10' or so and only on the top, so I don't a lot to deal with. But I am struggling with the technique. Both have pros and cons and I am leaning towards twist and rip. I really appreciate your videos. I keep watching them and think, yeah, twist and rip... then, yeah, back comb. Bit seem solid. But I noticed you tend to leave a decent amount of space close to the scalp and don't dread all the way down. Looks like is alleviates Side Show Bob hair a little. So what I am getting at is, I am close to ordering a basic dread kit, or is that a waste of $$ in your opinion?
Which method did you do? And which one do u prefer?
how long do you think my hair should be for this. I will have about 5 inches when I start is that enough
I started with the backcomb method and I think it works well the person who did it told me also that I should not wash my hair for a few months after doing the back come method do you think that that's a good idea when you first get it done and you've got those backcomb dreads
My hair is alittle past my shoulders I have been wanting dreads for a long time. With length of my hair do you think it be long enough to dread?
Brittney Harris Hair Length Required For Dreadlocks
I started new dreads 2 days ago using back comb method. It was suggested that I leave the nylon thread that's separating the sections in my hair for three months ... Or to just let them absorb into the dread. Should I cut these instead ? I'm afraid if they're too tight, they'll hinder the dread from knotting from the thread, up. Thanks !
I have super curly hair ,do you think dreads will work in my hair and what the best method ??:)
I have layered hair which consists of 4 to 10 1/2 inches of hair. Do you think the backcomb method would be good for me?
Backcomb is what I would use, but depending on how much of the hair is only 4 inches, you might want to wait a little longer.
Please tell me witch method you used do make those awesome dredlocks
All of my hair is unmaintained new growth.
What kind are ur dreads
love your intro
Between the two, which do you recommend? Twist and rip or back comb?
Sophie Nilles back comb
TnR
can you do it alone, if you never have tried it before? and have much hair length do you lose?
I do not recommend to do it alone, it is not so easy to work on the back of your own head. Different people will lose different amounts depending on their starting hair length and their hair thickness. Around 1/3 is the average loss I see people experience, but it could be more or less.
I just keep watching these videos and i just cant decide how to do my dreadlocks! Do u think this method is better?
breindel xo I don't think any one method is universally "better" - it depends on the individual.
How did u do yours? And how old are they?
breindel xo I started with backcomb, 91 months ago - but all that hair has since grown long and been trimmed off.
Lazy Dreads woa!!!
thank you! how long shud hair be to back comb?
Loxxi Brown did u get a answer for this?
I wanting to start my dreads is it better to start short or long? Also would you prefer backcombing
Sinisterdiz28 The longer the hair, the better they will hold up and the faster they will form: ua-cam.com/video/3oGa5vpAjEQ/v-deo.html
How long usually does it take for backcomb dreads to lye down.
Hey Lazy Dreads I really want dreads. My hair is about shoulder length. Which method would better organize my dreads? I want them to be neat. Also, should I let my hair grow longer to so that when I start dreads they won't be as short?
D'Angelo Yates Each method has it's own set of pros and cons that can really only be weighed up by the individual. I'd recommend checking out examples of each method - the timelines section of the Dreadlock Truth Forum has plenty to look at - and then seeing which method you think would best suit your situation.
I think time is better spent if you start the dreadlocks as soon as you can and let the hair grow while the hair is locking... rather than just growing the hair.
Do u have to keep back combing every other day to make the dread tighter want to know bc I been grown my hair out for all most a year and going try to get dread hope u see this msg ✌🏼️✌🏼
can you section your hair and leave the rubber band's on and wait a couple days to backcomb
+Ell Chapo You could... but you may find that things have started to get tangled by the time you come back, making the rubber bands harder to remove again.
What do you do after you finish your backcomb? Take bands out, and then? I love your videos!!!
And then you get on with whatever you have to do... and leave the hair to do it's thing.
So it's okay there a bit loose and I don't have redo them or touch them up?
Once they're started, they just need leaving alone
Friend, no need to use needle to sew the dread? I can only do this as you did in the video? sorry my english, I hope you can understand me ...
UMBRAL ELÉTRICO No, you don't need a needle.
I need your help lazy dreads! I dreaded my hair yesterday using t&r method and i had let my bangs grow to about 4 inches before i dreaded it in hope that it would stay in place, when i was t&ring my bangs would not knot with the rest of the section i took, i wanted larger dreads on the top of my hair so i put my small amount of bangs and mixed it with a bit more hair from the top to make a 1 1/2 inch by 1 1/2 inch square when i was seperating but my bangs seem to be slowly unraveling while the rest of the dread is really knotted, how can i retangle my bangs back into its original dread, im thinking about backcombing which i why i went to this video but im not sure if it will work, thank you for any help and much appreciated!
+brendon hilliard I would not personally try to dreadlock hair shorter than 6 inches. At 4 inches you are going to struggle to get things to hold. I would myself only use T&R on medium to long lengths of hair. I think trying to use T&R on 4 inches of hair is not going to hold up so well.
+Lazy Dreads my hair is about 20 inches long maybe a little longer in all, what i tried to do when i was initially t&ring was to take my bangs and take a little bit of much longer hair and try to dread my bangs into the longer hair and it did not work one bit, what i ended up doing after posting that question was taking it out and seperating my bangs from it and then dreading my bangs which i did with a combo of the t&ring and backcombing and its holding up beautifully, i only have one more question! How long should i wait to wash my hair after dreading it? thank you!
The background music makes me happy.

Nice dreads man
Bro do you use wax? After backcomb?
What do you thinki of the new justin beiber dreads?
Thank you for all your videos!! When do you take out the rubber bands?
+RubyTuesday Fla I wouldn't leave them in any longer than necessary... so take them out once you've finished all the backcombing.
oh ok thank you
How do i know if im getting them tight enough? Also my hair is thin so how big do i need to make my dreads?
Necro666Mole It's difficult to say what is 'tight enough' because there's not really a scale of 'tightness'... you can only get them as tight as you can and either they'll hold up and you'll know you did a good enough job... or they'll wash out, in which case you'll know something didn't work out.
How big you make them depends entirely on how big you want them.
Question: can I use dread extensions with the backcomb method? I've been wanting them for years, but am just now about to do it and am trying to get as much info as possible. Love your videos, thanks!
Shauna Mullins Yes, extensions can be added to backcomb-method dreadlocks.
Hey since I have thin fine 5 inch hair and I want my dreads pretty thick what inch by what inch should I make the sectioned squares
I would wait until the hair is slightly longer. If you want them thick then they will likely need to be larger than 1 inch squares. 1.5 inch squares will result in thicker dreads, I probably wouldn't go much bigger than that though. The thickness of the resulting dreads will be determined by your hair thickness.
Curious why u didn't u go close to tha scalp? @lazy dreads
what method do you use
What do you do when you get to the tip of the hair? Do you do anything special or just continue backcombing?
Godly Rotter Just backcomb down until you run out of hair. It's not of great importance to get the tips super knotted up as they'll likely come loose once the dreadlocks get washed anyway.
Greetings :). One week ago I back combed my hair. how long would you recommend I wait to wash them? and also I love your dreads, they are what I hope mine will turn out!!
using this method, how long do you recommend i leave the elastic bands in?
As short a period of time as you can.
My twist and rip won't stay together help me
Very good method. I wish it had shown the comparison of length of the freshly formed dreads vs the original straight hair though. I know they will get shorter as they lock up but it would have been nice to see.
As you said, they get shorter over time. These particular ones were not much shorter than the starting hair length - however they quickly lost length after they had started to be washed and so showing how much they'd lost at day 1 wouldn't have been all that representative.
Hey man I backcombed my hair today and I was wondering how long they stay large/poofy? Anyway to tighten them up? (caucasian, fine, straight hair)
They will settle after you've been sleeping on them and washed them a couple of times. You can sea salt them or wool rub them - or palm roll them to give yourself something to do, but in the end they're going to just need lots of time to lock up.
i have semi thin kinda curley hair, can be really curly at times, im wanting alot of dreads. not very thick, but distinguishable from braids. whats the best way i should do mine, and can u section too thin? also do u think mane and tail would help them grow faster?
can u section too small i meant.
jane doe As the dreadlocks lock up they will be distinguishable from braids regardless of what method you use. You can go for which ever you feel most comfortable and confident with - but you will likely want to avoid natural/freeform if you're looking for a particular/uniform thickness.
You can certainly section too thin - a section is too small if there is not sufficient hair within it to actually produce a dreadlock form. There is also the issue that thinner dreadlocks = a greater total number across the head, but also more that are able to knot into each other and therefore a greater number that will need to be separated - and thinner dreadlocks are harder to separate back out than thicker dreadlocks.
ok thank you so much! :-)
Does the new hair that grows from your roots knot itself together to form dreads??
eman1537em ua-cam.com/video/hRK2aOpbIi8/v-deo.html
what matures faster twist and rip dreads or back comb dreads ?
Philly Chronic Neither, those methods are only for holding the hairs in the sections... the maturation is from the day to day interaction and will take the same amount of time for both.
Lazy Dreads thanks man :) i had herd alot of different things but that helps so thank you :)
you got dreads like my dad, just that my dad has been saving dreads for around 22 years. His hair goes down to his knees haha
I noticed that when you back combed the hair, you back combed it straight upward and didn't twist the hair at all. When I back combed my first ones, I twisted the hair as well to make sure I had gotten all sides. Is this harmful or counter-productive in any way? I have half of my dreads made for the second course of dreads
well done
Hey bro, my hair at the moment is about 4-5 inches in length but hella thick and kinda wavey/curly I have purchased a back comb brush and I might go ahead and try to make a couple to see how they start out due to I already get knotty hair not touching it anyway! Any pointers? Cheers
I would personally recommend waiting until your hair is a little bit longer.
Okay thanks
this is a very nice intro btw
Dude how did u make this into😻I love it
being a weird person, and having really layered hair, i only put one dread in my hair last night with backcombing. i noticed today that the roots are longer on the top than the bottom, like it hangs down instead of trying to stick out. is that okay? also i left like an inch of hair between the dread part and the scalp, is that right?
As long as the lump of hair that you've backcombed has enough knots in it to hold together, it'll be fine. How it looks at the start is not representative of the finished thing :)
I want to know what is the best method. Back comb or twist and rip?
Randy Sanchez Neither is significantly different from the other over the long term.... so the 'best' would be the one you're best at using.
If I permed my hair to add some texture, would that make the process even more damaging?
+That Bethesda Guy I did braids to get my hair started which provided lots of texture for my straight hair, and bonus your hair will be presectioned for the dread process and it will be a chemical free method to get your texture. :)
when can I take out the elastic bands
I have done my full head of baby dreads usng the backcomb method and i love them but people keep saying they look too loose... but ive back combed them for the past three days now and im afraid that just because i didnt use wax or the crochet needle that my dreads won't mature...
I've watched a few UA-cam videos on dreads and have seen some people use the backcomb method then use a crotchet hook to make them look more like dreads. Also after a period of time using the crotchet hook to fix loose hair around the root and if the dread gets "frizzy" to use the hook through the dread to make it look better. Will doing that hurt or slow down the process of the dread?
Chelsea Rhodes Using a hook will allow loose hairs to instantly be pulled into the dreadlocks which can lead to them looking significantly neater and tidier, faster. It's not really going to speed up the time it takes for the dreadlocks to properly mature throughout though as the hooking does not replace the tiny complex knots which form over time - but they can look more together, faster. On the downside, when you use a hook you don't let the hairs individually knot where they would necessarily naturally lay, instead you pull groups of hairs into the dreadlocks at points and angles which you decide. This can sometimes inhibit the dreadlock's ability to process naturally in the same way as it otherwise would have because parts are pulled tight by the hook. This can be especially noticeable at the roots - roots take a while to mature and in the meantime can look like they're just loose and growing out. Given enough time they will knot tighter and tighter to the root and then continue to lock the new hair as it grows out, but if the root hairs are crocheted up they can't move and mature in the same way which can lead to the roots needing to be continually re-crocheted as new hair grows in. Crochet hooking can be harmful to dreadlocks over periods of time as the repeated insertion and pulling of the hair can lead to damage. While in a single sitting the amount of damage would unlikely be noticeable, but if it needs to be repeated over and over, especially at the roots, it can lead to noticeable changes.
Lazy Dreads Wow, thank you for the great information! I appreciate it. I like the idea of dreads but not so much the idea of them looking "messy". Maybe they aren't for me.
Alright, so the hair can't be conditioned. What if it has been conditioned, do I have to wait a while or...?
The more conditioned the hair, the more likely the knots are to loosen. While there is no strict requirement for the hair to be 100% unconditioned, you do increase the risk of them washing out if the hair is too conditioned.
what method should i use for not too long hair?
Back combing works for short hair too! They might just stick straight up lol
Whats your opinion on putting beads in mature dreads
TheUpbeatStoner Decorate at will!I do however always recommend removing the beads before you wash the dreads and waiting until they're dry before reinstalling them. :)
Okay will remember, thanks for the info!
Just done a few and mine are a bit loose at the root is that bad?
It should not be of too much concern. They would loosen anyway.
This guys good at editing he was talking and doing his back combing and he stopped talkin just in time for him to speed if up
You only need to backcomb once right? Like you don't have to touch it up once in a while or..?
You just backcomb the once. The backcombing is to group the hairs up. Over time the hairs then knot together and form the dreadlocks proper.
I have a bad hairline n really thin hair will that stop me from getting dreads?
Well if you have thinner hair, you'll have less hair to form the dreadlocks so you'll still be able to make them, but they won't be as thick or as many compared to if you had thicker hair.
very helpful! do you have any tips for like..you know..using synthetic hair and such? ^-^ wicked dreads btw ^-^
Gabrielle Tollerson I'm afraid synthetics dreadlocks are not an area which I have any experience in.
Im way late to this discussion but most videos Ive watched i havent seen anyone using wax? Is that not something that helps?
My friend did basically the same thing as you did in this video to my hair so my dreads were really fluffy and soft the first few months. When I went to a punk festival a friend of mine told me I got ripped off (even though I got them for free) and that they weren't "real dreads".
Now they've really started to mature and knot together though so I've learned that you just got to be pantient.
Did you hear similair thing when you first started off with your dreads?
Per Bergman Pretty much everyone you meet will have some form of opinion on dreadlocks... and often they will let you know... even if you don't ask. You hear all sorts of things like "those aren't real", "you'll never be able to wash them", "you need wax to get those to work"... easiest just to smile and carry on.
+Lazy Dread i have an afro is there anyway i can put dread in my hair? I had them before they looked good for a couple of days but after a while they didn't look like dreads anymore.
Tristan Johnson If you have enough hair, you can. They're not going to look like great dreads when they're young though.
Lazy Dreads i had them for about 6 months and i was able to brush the out.
While some people can get very strong dreads by 6 months, it's more common for it to take 12 months or more and even then it would be possible to brush them out if you wanted to. It's possible to brush out 7+ year old dreadlocks.
Lazy Dreads they didn't form, and i was told if they are bigger they wont form. What would you say is the best way to get them done?
There is no single best way, different methods suit different people in different situations... and it also depends on the end result that is sought. The three methods I recommend are Natural/Neglect/Freeform, Backcomb and Twist & Rip.
I am interested in only partially dreading my hair. I read in the comments to wait at least a week before I wash them but how do I avoid getting them wet so that way I can wash my regular hair?
***** Well there lies the difficulty with having partial dreadlocks. There's no secret great way to go about washing the hair separately... you just have to do the best you can.
does this work for afroy type hair
brad ennis probably not
that's the point of the brush to get it to afro hair
for afro type hair free form, twisting with gel, or crochet hooks are good for that hairstyle
Zafir Uzoma exactly lol
Should I start dreadlocks in the summer or some other day?
It doesn't really matter I think
they are a little bit loose, will they completely form in few weeks?
+Lucija Čok It takes months for them to completely form.
How long does it take to make dreadlocks using the backcomb method?
Tyler Guest It can take from a few hours to a whole day or so to backcomb a whole head - it depends on how long the hair is and how experienced the person is that is doing the backcombing.
