I love how you broke this all down! Just in case this helps anyone reading through the comments I have straight fine but thick hair and I highly recommend only using rip and twist to start your dreads. I ended up removing my first set because of the crochet method!!! It looks great at first but within two to three months became my biggest regret. The ones that were only rip and twisted annoyed me at first but were doing wonderfully at the 6 month mark. I am going to start another set after my hair grows back a few inches from where I cut it (the crochet method also made it a major headache to remove them). Happy dreading everyone!!!
I have very straight hair and used the crochet hook method. I'm coming up on a year and couldn't be happier with the result. The only thing that was even slightly an issue was that for the first couple months, they looked unnatural and they were very tight. After the first few months though I got through the "ugly" phase and now almost a year later I'm so happy with them and would recommend this method for straight hair any day!
This was so far beyond being helpful, I feel like I had someone invested in my hair and knowledge! Thank you brotha, I'll be learning from the tube and my friends since my family hasn't used dreads since they were on the reservations! You da goat for sure
You asked what hair type, I have 3B(defined sharpie diameter curls) that goes almost to 3c when taken care of well and down to 2c if I use bad products and such.
2b I think I have🤔 I started my locks 2,5 week ago. I made a short video on the process for now. I love them and to see what is happening. I used backcomb and crochet.
I've dreadlocked my hair a few times and am trying again, with only two in my hairline, I feel so ready and know exactly how I'm going to start my hair babies! Thank you so much for this easy to follow video and mapping!
aderall deible it’s really nice bieng able to just get up and get on with day still waiting for the ones nearer to front to lock up properly but it’s rlly good so far
I’ve had 2 sets of locs (full head and high top) and I regret getting rid of them. I’m impatient and waiting to start my loc journey again. Also, I think I’m in the 3B, 3C section
I know this video is older. I have a weird combo of hair types, but overall I'd say I'm maybe 2A, and most of my hair has zero texture!! Not owned a brush in over 10 years, and barely need to comb it because it just stays so smooth! It took me over 50 hours (over the course of 2 weeks) to get through all of my hair. I did twist&rip with crochet and interlocking, and I killed my shoulders back-combing too. Each dread took nearly an hour; longer if I had to pause to do anything else. Never been one to wash my hair often, so my scalp is used to me going long period without washing (like you talked about in a different video). I lightly washed and dried my hair in the afternoon and allowed it to dry mostly in the sun. The next morning, almost all of my dreads were half unlocked! Took me another 4 days just to get them retwisted. My husband has been picking at me because I went from doing nearly zero maintenance on my hair to spending all my downtime to maintain dreads lol.
Just started mine on straight hair. Twist and rip wasnt really working so I searched it up and found the backcombing method. Its worked really great for me. Just need to practice more with crocheting. I got the frizzies!!!! lol
Just to add something nobody ever seems to mention: Dread locks are like sponges, if they are soaked, it can take days for them to dry properly, depending on how fat they are.. Ok, maybe not multiple days, but 1
Dredlocks.. When we use the term we are essentially referencing the way in which Europeans looked down on African natural hair styles Europeans thought natural intertwined hair was disgusting and disturbing thus the term “dread” being associated with locks. Let that sink in, when you use the term ‘dreadlocks’
I just started my first set with 2 strand twists on 3c 4a hair. If there would ever be a reason for me to cut all my hair off, I'd start my second set free forming. I think there is a big difference in how they develop in long hair vs short hair
Hey! I think from his diagram, I might have 3c or 4a as well. My plan is to freeform. I would like to ask, if you could explain what you meant about locing and long hair. I ask because my hair is probably a few inches past my bra strap. It grew so much not really doing anything to it. What is your opinion about freeforming. With this length? Thank you ❤
Ninti 999 they seem to get much thicker when you start with longer hair most of the time. There is a free former on UA-cam who started her first set with longer hair and got really thick locs that time around. The second set she started from a buzz cut and here locs are much thinner, without doing any type of seperation herself
Ninti 999 The UA-camrs name is the queen po Yes! It's exciting! It's a really exciting process. It's not just physical, because you get to learn so much about yourself, because of all the changes you have to go through.

Hey I think you are great! I’m glad I found you. I had dreads in my 20’s, before UA-cam. 😂 we did lots of stuff to try and make them happen. Ultimately I bought some beer an had friends over. They helped me section it off and twist/ripped my way into dread-dom. I had to chop them for personal reasons. I have 4 kids now 20 years later and I’m watching your channel enjoying the great info and positivity! I may do half dreads? After my kids my hair turned from bone straight to 2C 3A 😂 Plus some grey sparkles! Anyways, you have a wonderful day!
Hey Gunter, as someone who's about to start locking his hair (white Scottish person btw with type 1 hair) would you be able to go through the "washing process" when you have newly t&w+ch dreads. In your last vid you said "the more you wash the quicker it locks" but how do I wash without my hair opening up and going straight again? Help would be appreciated

yeet offcial yeah it didn’t start to get wavy until about 6 inches and curled up more the longer I let it grow. But from the root to that 6 inches or so is still the most straight. If that makes sense
Could i ask a question? Im a white girl with braid locks. My hair is really rhick so my locks are pretty thick and theres like 40 of them on half of my head (yhe bottom half) because of this, i blowdry them so they wont spoil (a lessin i learned pretty quick) ... My question is, would you recommend blow drying before or after retwisting
I have 4b hair and I’m thinking of interlocking the roots of the two strand twist I currently got in but I also plan to pull it out in a couple years. What’s the best method to use so that I’m able to pull it out?
