- Natural / Neglect / Freeform Dreadlocks information. What are neglect dreadlocks? How do you start the neglect process? what are the pros and cons of neglect dreadlocks?
This method requires you to do nothing... nothing!. If you leave your hair along for long enough it will in fact form deadlocks. To use the neglect method successfully you simply need to stop brushing and conditioning your hair.
Pros:
This method will create completely 'natural' dreadlocks. Their appearance will differ from those attained by other methods because the hair will not be constrained to any predetermined root pattern.
This is obviously the cheapest method because you don't need to buy anything special or pay anyone to create the locks for you.
This method doesn't require any hair or scalp work so you will not experience the sore scalp that some of the other methods immediately result in.
This method doesn't require any products / no waxes or gels are required for this method
Cons:
This is in some ways the slowest method for attaining dreadlocks. While all methods will take 1 year+ to mature, Neglect dreads take a really long time before they even look like dreadlocks.
You have very little control over how they look. The other methods have a vary degree of control over how thick or thin the dreadlocks are because you create them from the root upwards and therefore the dreadlocks will always be as thick or as thin as the root pattern you used. In the case of neglect dreadlocks you are leaving them to their own devices and this can result in very uneven looking dreadlocks. You will have to periodically pull the matted sections of hair apart yourself in order to stop them forming one huge dreadlock, but that's about all the control you will have.

This guy does not edit his videos, he teleports with his dreadlocks powers.
That’s right, we dread people teleport, and not walk.
Yeah, I did think that he is talking very nicely, he must have really thought about what he is going to say.
DredTech allows you to teleport on demand
i am caucasian with extremely straight and thick hair. i did my dreads by only using residue free shampoo. i did not section, twist and rip or anything like that. it took about three whole years for them to actually lock and mature and i ended up with only 23 dreads. im pretty satisfied with them now although i did stress quite a bit during the 3 years it took. i dont have the best roots/sections but the dreads themselves are pretty beatiful now if i say so myself. my best advice for anyone using any method at any point in your journey is just dont worry about it. even just forget about your hair all together. i learned that they only get better given time regardless.
I wanna see your photo please 😭
Thank you so much. I've been feeling self concious about my locs. I've had mine for almost two years now. I relieved to know that they will get better.
when I feel discouraged about my dreads or when I think about taking them out, I just watch your videos and I immediately remember why I wanted them in the first place. your dreads are very inspiring. thank you!!!
DUDE THIS VIDEO IS AMAZING, your accent is way cool and your humor entertained me all the way through.
Lukas Bliss Glad you enjoyed it!
OMG I started my freeform dreads four days ago. I stopped using conditioner, only washing every 4 days, and not touching my hair. Thanks for everything man you are the reason I got interested in dreads! :)
I have natural dreadlocks!
They take a lot of patience and dedication. :)
But totally worth it in the end
Good things come to those who wait :)
Lazy Dreads yepp :) true
Freeform every time! Just be prepared to look like a scruff for a while and have a lot of shrinkage, but it's worth it
lnMemory of JohnMordaunt I didn’t twist and rip on the top first then started towel method, would it come out good
I'm around 8 months into free forming and you're definatly not wrong about shrinkage.
Is shrinkage like your hair getting shorter or the dread getting skinnier
@@stuntxx it looks a lot shorter as it knots but don't worry it soon grows 😁
My hair is naturally very knotty and likes to matte if I ignore it for even a day. I've wanted dreads for a long time and I'm so glad I found this method of dreading. I think I'm ready to take the journey :P
I love the techno beginning and love your greetings. I love dreads I am attempting the neglect method to see if my hair will dread
I feel I can identify most with this method - it's pros and cons, so I'm glad to have watched this! :-) thanks for another great video!
Woooooo I love lazy dreads! Thank you for existing you gives me all the information
love the top. wish everyone knew about this. so many people say I'm doing it wrong. When I'm doing what u say. thank you for ur support x
2 months in my neglect journey... your videos have been a great resource and it really eases the uncertainty that I face in these early stages. thanks @lazy dreads
how do your locks stand 4 years later?
well they're only 2 years now after cutting off the first set 2 years ago, but at length to tie back so I'm pretty content. I mostly like that I can have more length than my loose hair in the long run except it grows considerably slower.
Thank you for the info It has help me decide the type of dreads that I want.
Thanks for making this vid! I started mine backcomb but I than went with the neglect method and what I loved the most ( and It still going on ) its to see the change, the improvement of the knotting! but you are right, you need to like the messy look. especially when they start, I looked like I was a biiiig mess with neglect hair haha!
You're so chill man, I subbed
awesome vid! considering freeform now, I have been doing this for some time now accidentally and am now experiencing dreading. Thinking about letting it rock because it seems like it will be good for my hair in the long run.
I started my dread journey of natural dreads. My hair grows slow but I'm going to continue to wait because I've always wanted dreads but the other methods haven't really worked for me due to also having fine hair but so far the neglect method is working very well
2 and a half years in with freeformin..freakin love it 💯
Mr Chris, ur dreads look more wicked with every video :)! With starting the wool rubbing as u saw in my 20 question tag video, starting my 4th month of t&r soon, they r shrinking, getting thicker and forming wonderfully! I'll send u a pic soon. Keep rockin ur vids!
I stopped cutting, conditioning and brushing my hair almost two years ago. It looks the same now as it did then, no tangles. However, when I was younger I didnt cut, brush OR WASH my hair for 6 months and it started to dread on its own.
Do you have an update on this? I dont know how this is even possible.
Freeform going on for me :) one year in, got 3 loopy crazy ones before I started combing again. Stopped combing again and got some extra ones forming now.
I'm someone who has used both backcombing and neglect/patience/freeform in his life. My current set that I've had for three years are from the neglect method. It was an emotional rollercoaster. During the process and though they were clean, there were days and weeks that my hair just looked so terrible to a point I was considering brushing them out or cutting them. Thank goodness for tams/hats. I wanted some consistency with neglect dreads (which is almost unheard of) I allowed the to grow together to a point I now have 10 huge dreads on my head. The reason I went with this current method, is because I didn't have anyone to help backcomb them. I love them and wouldn't have them any other way. Peace.
I've known a number of people who have gone for neglect when starting over. I would also neglect if I was to start over anew.
I don't need to control, this type of hair can help me learn to flow with what is
as a kid i never really brushed my hair unless i was forced to cuz my hair was wavy and it would do its own thing but i started the towel method and i get laughed at alot cuz my hair looks weird an stuck but its good so far, thanks for inspiring me man ✊♥️
Thanx a million+ times buddy!
OMG THANK YOU I've been looking for a video in freeformin for a black male with about 4 ins of hair this was extremely helpful my hair is pretty curly and can form a quick lose loc when rolled
Question how do ya feel on Palm rolling to get the locs started and take early form
Thanks Lazy Dreads
i really do dig neglected ...
My boyfriend has dreads from this method. After a year they are forming well but he still has some loose hair. I love them so I'm now downing the brush to try myself. I have waist length hair so I hope it will still dread.
Thanks I just started using salt water and I'm not gonna condition. It makes it look wild but that's what I want
The look i want IS neglect dreadlocks ❤ and i am broke and patient 😂 so this has me sold 🎉
Awesome video! I find I am very drawn to the neglect method.Even though I don't know how they will turn out once time goes on,but that's kind of the interesting part I find about it that draws me to it.I found when I did have shoulder length hair and came out of the bath,my hair was all knotted up very fast and some of them did already look like dreads, they were separated and knotted right tight. They were also hard as hell to brush out every night after my bath and sometimes I would feel like saying hell with this and just forget brushing them altogether because of the feeling of my arms going to fall off lol I have wavy thick hair, but I have no idea if that's the reason why they would get matted so fast or if it's the way I wash my hair,I don't know.Anyways I feel like I am going to first go with the neglect method and see what happens with it all.hopefully my boss don't get at me for having a lot of matted knots in my hair,he's kind of uptight which I hate and I hope I can dye them the way I want to as well.I hate jobs that control a persons hair and body.I mean as long as a person is clean that's all that should matter I think.
Very good video. Thanks for sharing :)
Great videos, Sir. Also digging the accent. :)
How you talk reminds me of the Dentist Bounty Hunter in Django, lol.
Month and a half in and I have 4 well shaped locs on the back and about every week or so a new one forms.
I began locking my hair about a week ago using the twist n rip method, and I am constantly harassed by people because I didn't use the neglect method. It's crazy, I cannot believe how much some people care about that kind of stuff.
Fookin simpla no brushy Just washy with wota and only your skalp with your tiny cute ass fingaz lay Back and W8 Job done
My ego says no don't go freeform bc it may turn out bad/not how I "want" it but something deeper inside me says it feels more right to go freeform. Something about damaging my hair to obtain dreads (bc something like backcombing will cause microscopic damage to your hair) just seems wrong. Decisions
Totally agree with you.. X I've stopped BRUSHIng my hair for 1 week now so far so good! 👍
i've recently learned of freeform & im convinced its a myth.. i havent used conditioner in probably like 7years, haven't combed my hair in atleast 2 years.. yet i do not have dreadlocks..
Paul Flurry
It’s not. I did it a few years back. You must also not run fingers through your hair and try not to tie it up too often. The hair needs to moove. Also, in the beginning, it helps to rub your hair with a towel a few times a day for 20 or so minutes. That way you get the knots started and they take over on their own.
hows your progress now 5 yrs later?
@@Dewey_Boondye420 my hair dreads mad fast if I don't brush it and were to keep it up in a bun too often. But in a bun it becomes like one dread lol. Down at night it would dread slower for me but better form. For instance right now there is like an hr of brushing to be done on maybe 2 weeks of not brushing it lol
you have such a fun opening
I went on vacation to Denver for about a month and didn't bring a brush or use conditioner at all and by the end of the trip my hair was pretty heavily dreaded so I let it go lol now they're been thriving like crazy but I'm considering getting them touched up and finished some where
QUESTION! I went to a watermark over the weekend, and there was a bunch of chlorine in the water, and it made my dreads feel really dry. Is that bad?!
PS. Love your videos!
Your locs are gorgeous
I started freeform dreads again last week. Keeping them clean is essential, last time I only washed 1-2 times a week and my hair was so greasy all the time they didn`t form. After a year of freeforming then I only had one or two knots that could maybe almost be considered a baby dreadlock. 1-2 times works for some people but my hair needs more washing to stay clean.
Do you use natural shampoo?, what hair type/ race are you, im a caucasian male and have just started my loc journey, do you know if tying my hair up in a rishi/top knot will affect the process, i usally wear it in one all day during work
I am starting to dread my hair after a weekend Festival, it's decided. Using the freeform method. Wish me luck
Good luck
You're my spirit animal. haha
great video thank you!! with straight hair, does tying it up get in the way of natural locks to form, or would leaving it down be best? :)
i have a lot more time than money at the moment so i figured maybe i will try this out. i have been quoted around $500 and up for a set of new dreads....!
So my question is would you recommend sectioning my hair with rubberbands at the beginning so that i can get better control on how my sections locks up? and how often should i wash my hair? fortunately i do live close to the beach so i may try that as well. thanks so much!!
Thank you for making this video! It is absolutely unbelievable -- in a very ironic way -- how many misconceptions there are about free-forming. Yes, I just left them alone and they locked on their own. No, I don't "do anything" to them. Yes, I can wash my hair and they "stay in." Hair, when not brushed or covered in soap residue, will knot. Such a simple concept!
I think people are just genuinely surprised that dreadlocks can form so simply :)
Is there anything you have to be careful of to protect the hair follicles? I had locks that were started by back coming about 10 years ago that lasted for nearly three years before I cut them. Yours look long and heavy, much more mature than mine were. So I'm asking if you've ever encountered any advice to keep the hair follicles and scalp very healthy
I'm on my 6th month of freeform, extremely satisfied with my decision, I have exactly 20 young dreads with strong roots and a few congos, exactly what I wanted, I wash my hair once a month with normal shampoo and separate them after showering, they are getting thicker and beautifully chaotic, thanks for the tips.
During bathing, can I bath my hair with soap?
How do you know when to start separating? I'm afraid I'm keeping the dreads from forming by pulling them apart, but I don't want them to be too thick or knot together at the wrong points
I had twist and rip dreadlocks for a year, I brushed them out because I died them too much and I just wanted healthier dreads. I started the twist and rip method again. I was able to put in six at the bottom of my scalp. I've now decided to keep them separate and have been free forming the rest of my hair. I definitely like the freeform way better. I'm just concerned about getting big locks. I've been separating the thicker knots that have been forming to prevent big locks. Can you separate beginner locks too much? My hair tangles super easy, so they're not going away, I just want to make sure I'm not slowing down the process even more than what it is to begin with.
im fairly new to locs but ive always wanted the "natural" loc look and im finally ready to start but my only question is if i want to wash my hair while growing it how often should i wash it and should i use shampoo? if so what brand or kind of shampoo would u reccomend?
I grew out a fro for about two years before it started locking up on its own. I love the freeform method. All I use is Guava and Pineapple oil twice a week and I let my hair do the rest. I used to use sea salt and water to help the new growth lock up, but I didnt like how dry it made my hair feel.
My hair has been locking for almost a year now, and I have to say Im extremely satisfied with this method. The hair on the side is more matted than the hair on the top and back of my head because of how I sleep...and Im perfectly fine with that. I also have never seperated any of my locs, and dont plan to either. (CONGOS!!!!!!!)
Anyway, I just wanted to share a little bit of knowledge that Ive picked up so far on my Locking Journey:
1. DO NOT TWIST THEM YOURSELF!!!!! Let your hair just do its thing. (Especially the new growth.)
2. Too much of anything is bad. (Sea salt, oils, ect.)
3. Avoid too much heat. It causes hair to brittle. (And maybe fall off if the roots arent strong enough!)
4. Avoid too much water. Give your hair some time to do its thing before you wash them again. (If you wash them that is.)
5. Patience...and lots of it.
Oh, and one more thing...I use water to wash my hair....thats it. Oils and water.
Happy Locking!!!
Question: If you have a dread dangling hanging on some strands what to do to keep the dread and get it like the rest of your dreads?
Do you have to moisturizer and oil them? If so how often?
The dreadlocks style I'm wanting to go for is the Bob Marley dreadlocks so what do I need to do to get them like that and how long do I gotta wait
I did the twist and rip method a little more than a week ago. My "dreads" have almost completely fallen out except for a small part of the middle in each one. They were fine until I washed my hair. I know it has not been long at all, but I am scared they will never form. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!!
I'm planning to start freeform method as my hair knots up sooo fast and is very "locky" but i'm just curious about a few things, should I section off the dreads as they form to avoid "rat nests" as I get huge knots really really easily. Or should I wait for the large knots to form first and then section them apart?
What kind of shampoo should I use to start start my dreads from day 1 with non dreaded hair?
Should I not keep my hair up in a pony tail during free form process
how do i get them to start forming in the front? cuz they are forming nicely in the back but not so much in the front yet
peace 🙏 do you think towel-drying hair after washing could prevent the forming of knots? when i tried neglect-method a few years ago, thats what seemed to happen. im planning to try again, starting from a buzzcut. im considering not towel drying this time. thank you 🙏
my hair always knots up alot more when i wash my hair. i think its all about your hair. mine gets to locking in like a week. then i brush it out because i get scared
and i have two strand twist some parts of my hair so praticle im having two strands and free form or neglected locs
i had freeform for half year and they just looked like messy hair, no dreads. in end i just rip and twist them. took 3-4 months to start shrink, and they have crazy loops and zigzags, i never use crotchet or maintance my roots, let them grow how they want.
i have a question, 'i've been free forming for a year now and i have a couple of dreads forming, but the top of my head is the only part not dreading, what can i do?
Can I free form from having parted crochet locks? They are bout 3 inches long. And is it a good idea?
I had my dreads interlocked for a year now but I wanna switch over to freeform, is this still possible
Question: I have twisted my hair with a sponge will this form free from dreads?
Should I wet my hair every morning to get dreads and wash every week and that's it
When you say NO CONDITIONER, does that include like Coconut Oil, Castor Oil and Jojoba Oil. I also wash my hair with Shea Moisture shampoo. What do you wash your Hair With
I'm trying to do this, I've already have hair locking together but of course it's not dreads yet, I use coconut oil to keep my skin and hair hydrated, is this wrong? will they not form with oiled hair? I also use argan oil.
btw my hair is naturally curly/afro (big curls).
God! This is so nostalgic for me.
i couldnt help but bust out laughing when you said that you dont even have to pay anyone, you dont even have to do it yourself!
haha
Should I put like absolutely nothing in my hair or should I use a specific kind of soap also is it okay if my hair is dyed
So like For the neglect method. When I shower I just water my hair. I should Start using the shampoo but don't brush
I accidentally grew 3 neglect locs, didnt realize it till i went to go get my head shaved down for my mohawk
YEA! beatles rock
is it faster to do it when you have thicker or thiner hair??
Thank you so much for this video! I was really looking for such a video, I started my neglected dreads journey 31 days ago and I'm just relieved to see I did everything right until now.. No brushing, no conditioning, only shampoo :)
I'm scared that the hair at the back of my head will become one big lock. I separate it regularly, but every morning it looks... kinda.. "knobbed" (if that means something in English :D). What do you recommend doing with my hair before going to sleep? Should I make a ponytail or a bun? Or just leave it?
mumkere You should just leave it. A lot of the progress happens at night while your head moves the hair around in your sleep. Having them tied up every night could considerably hinder their progress... and likely be uncomfortable. You just have to keep separating and wait to see how they turn out.. it's kind of how it goes when you're forming them naturally.
when you say dont brush it do you mean with your fingers too? like even in the shower and everything?
I once had dreads forming naturally after I stopped brushing my hair. Sadly, I got worried because they were massive, And I didn't know what was happening.
So when he says don't condition your hair, does that also mean don't moisturize it daily? Also how long in between washes?
Also how long will it take for the hair to loc ?
When I did neglect I had one giant one at the back, it started off okay but then within a month or two all the hair around it became part of it, I should have been more careful lol.
Anyways, I wanted to ask something, it might sound silly but I need to ask. If you have lots of thin locks but twice as many loose frizzy hair around the roots, these loose frizzy hairs will lock up right? Will they be last part that will lock? I found this in my experience anyway and just checking before I go through it again.
Also do the thinner dreads get fatter when maturer?
What if you have thick and dense hair, but it is really smooth and silky??? I have a couple of what look like knots..... just let them be? Hair length is about 8-11cm
Just a couple quick questions .... is it ok to tie your hair up in a very loosely bound bun to keep out of eyes....also every once and awhile I sift my hands through my hair due to having a combover and undercut manbun for the last 1yr?!?!?! Anyone that can help with straight forward answers please....
Can you tie your hair in the early stages of this process?
I have a question, and I want to give some back story before I ask it. I understand if you're too busy to read all of this, so my question is separated out at the bottom. I want to share my journey for the same reason you want to share yours.
My journey has taken me to many places. Back in August, I found my first freeform dreadlock, and it was quite a surprise to find in such a perfect shape and size (to my liking) - plus, I've wanted dreads for years but didn't know they could form so easily. After I asked someone with beautiful dreads about what to do (at the time, I wanted to get my information from people face to face rather than online), they said basically what you said - that they will form on their own and start popping up like trees. Well, sure enough, that's exactly what started happening (I hadn't brushed, used conditioner, or cut my hair in a year and a half since I had it cut really short, so by this time it was about shoulder length) She also told me to make sure the roots don't get too tight, so I started rubbing my dreads between my fingers from top to bottom. This didn't really help, but I thought it did. In retrospect, it wasn't a long enough conversation (she was just ringing me up at a register), and I didn't fully understand her. So for several months, every few days, I would work strenuously on separating and "twisting" my dreads, only for temporary relief. I eventually discovered the magic of Dr. Bronner's liquid soap, and ever since I've found that my dreads are forming with much more ease, and I rarely have to do much separating. I also stopped "twisting" them after meeting a girl with some of the most beautiful natural dreadlocks with very similar hair to mine and realized the uniqueness of my hair was nothing to dread (no pun intended but that's hilarious - and accurate no matter how you look at it).
So after 8 months of natural dreadlocks, they're forming beautifully, but some of my earliest dreads are kind of scary, taking sharp turns, bunched up at the ends, thinner at the tops, and just totally rebellious (totally in my nature to rebel against trying to control myself). My very first dread looks nowhere near as beautiful as it started - it looks like a Popeye the sailor man forearm and fist. Is there any way to fix this??? I'm afraid to mess them up worse. If you have a video that explains this, the link will suffice.
Thank you so much for your videos. They've been a huge help.
I'm free forming and white how do I get rid of all this frizzy hair I haven't started dreading yet as im only a couple weeks in but my hair is super frizzy am I stuck with this till it starts to dread or can I do something now
I have about 4 neglect dreads due to not separating at the correct time 3 of them are starting to from one close to my roots, is there anyway of separating them?
So do i wait until dreads actually start forming to start separating?
Ok I'm gonna do this. Wish me luck. Im aiming for the XXXtentacion look
Spritzaz hot look right there. I recommend keeping the eyebrows :))
My hair is curly and this kinda nit works for me well....any ideas how to fix this?
should i wash my hair and much and how long for freeform dreads
Question... I have hair down to my navel. I was institutionalized for a two months. I had to keep my hair tucked and wrapped in a Du-Rag for a couple of months dew to fighting every day. The end result is that my hair locked in to place. Now my hair is compressed, I had it tucked away it looks short. Now I have one dread that is above my neckline. My question is that I noticed the my new hair growth hasn't locked in place. I keep the Du rag on as I did when this first happened and I realized it not locking like it did the first time. What do you recommend that I do to get the new growth to lock together? Please keep in mind that my hair is forming into one huge dreadlock. It was unexpected but I like it. I would appreciate your input. I thank you in advance.
So I am in my 3rd month of my natural dreads . My roots are not knotting up and I thought it would . And have to separate my hair every morning and every night ..and my dreads are flat how do I get them circular ? Or is this part of the waiting process? Help!!
I wish i saw this eight months ago No one really explains these details you know and they're very important,I was told by my cousin just to wash and dry and let it grow and he didn't say anything else like don't condition,No wonder why not all of my hair has been locked,This is so frustrating is there anyway I can fix this?lol I am desperate,I only found out on my seventh month into this not to condition And on top of that I wasn't sure so I didn't condition and its only been a month but still some of my hair didnt locked,What a waste of good eight months,You're probably the only sensible person to explain details,I was so desperate I ended up buying a sponge but I still don't know why it is not locking,Is it to late because I needed to do all of this from the beginning because it's the neglected method?
I never combed my hair in eight months and I did use the towel method after five or six months into this But still not all of my hair locked I feel like I did this whole thing in a really wrong way
so what soap do we use if we want clean hair?
