Years ago, I put 50 little braids in my hair. Someone suggested interlooping to tighten them up. I tried it. Major ouch when I finally took the braids out. Thanks for sharing all these methods with us Liz!!!❤️
Irish, Scottish and Scandinavians knotted their hair too. I think this hairstyle goes back to the 1st human to walk Earth but many cultures have had locs.
@@GypsyLeeLeeLovesTheWorldlease stop! It’s one thing to embrace OUR culture, but to lie and claim it as yours, NO!!!!! White washing history is NOT cool! The first humans to walk earth are blacks!!!
Well many other people don't, and some people will criticize and even physically assault white people for having braids or dreadlocks. Definitely risky for white people to wear their hair like this.
@@CrystalJanelleTV Many historians believe that India can be credited for the religious origins of dreadlocks. In fact, the Hindu Holy Scriptures, The Vedas, which was written in Indian between 1500 and 1000 BCE, provides the first written historical evidence of dreadlocks.
You did the interlocking all wrong!. or shall I say the darker interlocking. You were interlocking as you were doing a roof tightening, not a starter. You have to start at the bottom and work your way up to the top with no holes or gaps as you’re interlocking the hair upward when you’re starting the the locks if you are using the interlock method
okay okay Im also not a professional but if anyone is considering using twist n rip method you do it like that: you make sections of hair then you take one section of the hair twist it 2 times!!! and then you rip it... Liz showed it in a wrong way but there is no problem we are all learning ❤ thank you Liz for showing me different methods 🤍❤
Hahahaha thank you Katja for the very sweet correction😅 I have since learned how it was supposed to be done from this comment section! I appreciate you!
That was a very kind correction!! I love seeing people helping other people with things they may not be 100% professionally skilled in, and not being hateful towards the person trying to learn!! I've been wanting to start my Loc Journey for a few years now.. but I didn't want to be looked down on or degraded, just because I'm a Caucasian/Native American Woman🙃💁🏼♀️ but for the past few months, I've REALLY been thinking about it heavily, and I think I'm getting closer to being comfortable enough to start them!! I know everyone starts theirs for their own personal reasons... Personally, I want to start mine because when I'm doing my hair, it takes a good amount of time, and that extra time I spend on my hair could be put to better use, like spending time with my family, my babies, my husband, my Daddy.. I just want to be able to focus more time on my family, friends(the very few I have lol), just my life in general. Anyway.. sorry for the novel lol.. it just came out I guess 😅🤷🏼♀️☺️
Hi what does twist and rip mean?.. Ehat part do you rip out and why would anyone want to rip it out?..Genuine question, I'm considering locks and don't know where to start
thanks for this great and detailed guide. i had a good 13 years dreadlocks and lost it in 2020 after chemotherapy, now the hair is long enough again and I am looking for a possibility without gel, wax and the like. . i find your method with crocheting best and I'll test it for a while. . thanks for the great video . . your hair look great 👍
I’m doing mine semi free form not into all the products to make them look “nice” of course I want them to look good though not super highly polished couldn’t really be bothered just twisted the sections that formed already just looking for a approximate time to see some kind of results like knots or budding phase
As a whites girl with naturally curly, but very fine hair (a lot of very fine hair), when I wear my hair in its natural state, by noon, I have tiny dreads starting all over my head. So I don’t even bother wearing it natural anymore because it’s been awful to comb out every time I wash it. Have been teetering on having locs because I’ve always loved the look and I will finally have the freedom of not having to straighten my hair for special occasions, or wearing my hair in a permanent bun to avoid the tangles. I just don’t want to be accused of anything wrong. But is it wrong when your hair naturally wants to go that way, despite the color of your skin or not? Please forgive me if I said anything to offend anybody, I truly don’t mean to. I’m not good with words, and am feeling just a little lost in what to do.
I tried to press play but my soul told me to stop this video of blasphemy, i hope every single one of you find someone whos culture started this hairstyle and give them these views. We should have been more upset about Travis Kelce getting credit for the fade, i guess this is where we at now. First "natural" hairstyles would be a disqualifying trait, NOW "they" teachin "us" bought those same styles, only in America
what if you have short hair? Can you do the crochet method? Do you add hair to make them a good length? I have used temporary dreads and I really want to have real dreads, but my hair is short.
freeformer here. it took me about 4-5 years. i loved this process. i was able to control the end result quite a bit by separating the dreads as life went on. the third pro for this method is painless. after now getting my hair tidied up professionally (i have crazy curly hair and my baby hair wreak havoc on my dreads as they've stopped naturally locking), I had no idea how much it can hurt when you go somewhere to get your dreads seen too. OMG
How long did it take your dreads to take some type of form I’m doing mine semi Freeform and am looking for approximate time to see some type of knots and what have you
Leave it to me to have insomnia at 3am and spend almost an hour making one single crochet dread in my hair. But hey, it’s not too bad for my first dread literally ever and if I was able to do it just from watching this video that’s pretty cool. No way in hell I could do my whole head by myself, but definitely makes me appreciate actual dreadlock artists and how much time that does actually take. Though I’m sure it wouldn’t take a pro almost an hour for only one lock. I was being extra careful so not to break hair and I had no idea what I was doing…..but I crochet and have hooks sooooo…….
mine actually started different, i put in extensions (braided my two inch long hair around them) and left those in for a couple months. when they came out, the hair under the extensions had matted into baby dreads. then i just let it go from there! they are down to my butt now lol
My dad @ 69 decided he wants to do dreads in his hair. For the last wk 0 days I have been trying to teach myself how to dread 😂 (how I reached ur pg) Thank u so much for making this. So far I agree the hook method has been the best for me. I do have a silly question typically how many dreads should a person have. Oh he did start w freeform how do u make them more uniformed plz & thank u tremendously. Any added advice would be awesome ❤ be blessed
Great explanations! My first set was 100% freeform. Loved watching them form, but I ended up being unhappy with how thick they were, especially the ends. Latest set was started with twist n rip, then I experimented with back comb and crochet. I liked that so much better, that I undid most of the tnr dreads and redid with back comb / crochet. Sectioning was grab and go, but it’s since been fixed by a loctician, though she said it was mostly pretty good😊.
Yeah I’m doing semi free form in case I want to take them out one day it’ll be an absolute nightmare trying to brush them out nicely or taking them out after a certain period
I'm obsessed with this new channel Liz, thank you!!! Can you please please show all the "extras" you put in your hair? Like single or double ended extensions, loose hair, etc? Thank you! This was great!
Sad to see so many people not being able to watch a video without picking fights in the comments. Anyway Lizz, awesome video. I love using the crochet method you use, I've heard it called a basket stitch too. Once I learnt it, I found it really easy to maintain my own dreads with it. Unfortunately since I have fine flyaway (but thick) hair and mine weren't created with the crochet method, my root maintenance is pretty regular because the fluffies are insane when I wash mine.
@@lizkidderstudioI’m super excited to see where my semi free form dreads end up right now they looks like some messy messy hair thinking of washing them gonna use ACV and water maybe some natural shampoo (or not)
I used to want dreads so badly when I was a teenager . I never did it though and now I don’t want to anymore but the twist and rip was really hard to watch 😂😂😂 same with the back comb . I have very fine hair and I could easily see mine turning into one big dread
I went to some dude and he used the crochet method to bottom part of my hair, and did not realise how long my hair was going to take. He then pursued to braid the rest of my hair (I wanted thin dreads) and only crocheted the ends and the start of each braid. I must also mention that my hair was not parted and now almost in week two I am regretting this journey because some strands of one section of hair is in another section of hair. As if my hair was not properly separated while doing the dreads. Now I don't know what to do. Please advise
hey, first off so sorry about the guy that messed you up. So, you can take time to find out a good experienced personel to rectify the situation. Best thing with hair you can almost always manipulate it as long as it ain't cut down
Got another way. Install synthetic dreadlocks and just leave them in. I had mine in for about 3 months and my actual hair had started to dread by the time i took the synths out. I did end up combing them all out but if you wanted to have nice looking dreads right away while you wait for your real hair to dread up thats one way to do it I guess. Might be a pain to get the synths out once they get too long but I mean it is one way to do it. lol
I don't maintain my roots, (mostly because they are at the back and I can't see them) but I can use my crochet hook to tidy up further down on the dreads if needed. Crochet all the way for me..... The thing I love most about dreads is that there are so many ways to go about having them, caring for them and everyone can do what is best for them!
Thanks for presenting all the methods. Your pictures were amazing, I wish you showed more. You mentioned not breaking hair and I cringed because I have to break hair to separate and I hate it.❤
Dreadlocks are just a term. Nothing to dread about them yes but the term dread I think used to mean something akin to greatness. I can't remember exactly what it was but when the term was coined dread wasn't a bad thing. Even if I'm wrong about that it's only a term literally everyone says it the word "dread" has basically lost the meaning. Do YOUR research.
I have rat tail dreads. I used a mix of different methods to dread my hair. I used wax for the maintenance because I am Mongolian and Russian mix so I have more Asian texture hair so actually the wax helps my dreads. I don’t suggest using wax with very thin hair. I would say to use the best method for your hair because everyone has different hair
Oh man I wish I would of seen this years ago. I didn't know how to do the crochet hook thing that well when I did my dreads and pretty much was way too rough and m you hair got really short when I took my dreads out... I cried. But I'm not doing it again up until I figure it out better lol
The crochet hook is nice. I love it and I love how you explain everything and I can’t wait for my daughter to get started today🎉 it’s been over 25 years. I’ve been wanting these and I’m like no I don’t want it. Yes I want it. No they’re gonna be too heavy because I have a thick head of curly curly curly hair thank you and I subscribed to you and I’m going to keep watching.😊😊😊
I had a loctitian do crochet hook locs on my hair and it looked amazing on day one but after like 2 weeks my roots were all short loose flyaways and it looked HORRIBLE
Hey Liz🤗appreciate the sharing of knowledge👍✨i have a kid with 3c curls (youth, 20 year old) and i am a hairdresser, only made dreads on straight hair before with backcombing and roll between palms with a dry pastewax to lock the hair more and to remove frizz. Never used the crochetmethod, but looks great. What about ising the two methods together? Like more fluffy backcombing first, then using the crochet(needle).. and end with the rolling between the palms, What do you think? And any objection against using paste/wax? Other option you would use instead?
Currently, I have 4 Locs at my neck and I have 2c and 3a hair (I am white). And I don't brush my hair bc then I would have just puffy, "leo" hair ;-). So, everytime I brush my hair (usually before I wash them), it takes so much time bc my hair obv decides to loc itself and it's rather annoying & time consuming to comb that out. If I would do nothing, I for sure would have freeform locs all over my head, but I prefer the crocheted look much more :)
Had my hair done by a friend in college, she used the back combing and palm rolling... I have thick and curly hair and it worked great...held up great as I was swimming as part of my workout routine...I can't wait to get out of the military to have it done again... I would love to come to you and have em done.
My hair is very short at the moment like inch long.. How long should I grow out my hair to start the process ? I have straight hair ? thanks for the video Liz
Her dreadlocs look good. Usually, when people with naturally straight hair get locs, it looks sloppy. Too stringy and not cared for properly and not thoroughly done.
I'm watching this and while you're back combing, I have this urge to go in and remove all the tangles!! Which is totally ironic because I want dreads myself! Hahaha 😂

How she gonna say straighter hair is easier to loc then kinky. Lady bye. Yall always trying to steal methods and claim them as your own. Yes you have done some homework but you have tried to twist what you have learned. Tell the truth. If anybody could get locs everyone would have them. Well she told the truth when she said she doesn't know what she is doing. Can we have anything 4 ourselves?
patience is key for the loc journey unless you opt for locs extension that'll give you a 'foreshadow' of how you may appear in natural locs as you grow them beneath the extensions
Liz can i come to u to start my dreads. Im 30 white and my hairs dirty blonde straight asf and right now most of it is 7-8 inches. I was thinking of doing braids till its longer bc i dont wanna look silly but idk what to do. Im tired of doing a skin faid hard part and gel back top style.
My hair is longer than a Bob right now, like A little longer than my chin and I can’t wait anymore! I really want my dreadlocks back - but I can’t afford to go to Philly and pay $800-1100 for them. I really wanna just do them myself but idk if I can do it.. 😢
Love this video,I've had my dreads for almost 7 years,I started mine with backcombing and twist and rip,it took around a year for them to mature and it definitely taught me patience lol,but I couldn't imagine not having my dreads now Def the best decision I've ever made for my hair, and I wouldn't recommend interlocking as it causing alot of damage and weak spots at the root and with twist and rip u only wanna twist each stand about 3 times then pull up and repeat until u reach the end of that strand,if u twist to much they turn out looking twisted instead of dread like lol,ty so much I'm loving this new channel girl..💜✌😁
I ve just discoved your utube channel thank you so much for those vidéos it helps me to decide to do réal dreads on my head !! I put false to try but i love dreads more and more maybe in 2024 january Will be thé beginnings of my real dreads life !! Thank you soooo much !!!!
I did do my own dreads with crochet technique and it does take so much practice but I have gotten a lot better, sometimes I cheat and interlock to tighten close to roots
So I have a question. Are my dreads supposed to feel, scratchy? They're not soft and they really don't bend so I'm left with almost no ways to do them other than a blank boring pony tail. Help Liz Kidder!
Hi Lina! Brand new crocheted dreadlocks will certainly feel stiff/scratchy. As they mature they *should* soften up over time. They will always be a little dryer/scratchier than “normal” hair and that’s something you should get used to. BUT if they’re extremelyyyyyy dry/brittle (like my bleached hair) then you could use an oil on them to try to hydrate/soften. OF if you have synthetic dreadlocks they might always stay stiff/scratchy. Hope this helps!
Wish you could do mine. I'm creole so my hair is fine like Caucasians. My locs turned out looking like yours,I'm just African American I used the backcombing to start the foundation cuse my hair is so soft the I went in with the crochet hook
I JUST got dreads 2 days ago. They did a interlocking/comb back method and palm rolling.. but the Knotty Boy wax balm they used feels terrible. There is so much wax from my hair everywhere! They said I shouldn't wash my hair for a month and continue to use the wax every 3-4days and palm roll every day. Does this sound right? I hate the wax haha
If your hair is interlocked, you can wash your scalp, maybe not your actual dreds. (I’m not a pro, just a dred head) and if you don’t like the product, there are so many great ones out there❤ there’s no right or wrong way to go about your dred journey, they’re your dreds, feed them what works for you 🎉 personally, I love using a hand roll/crochet technique to maintain and lock new growth. Your dred journey should bring you joy my friend, don’t be afraid to switch it up 😊
Another question: Ik have made dreads in my hair (rip, backcomb, twist, crochet, palmroll) and extended them with synth. extensions. When they are locked to my hair I test the connection to pull on them and the lock is really tight. But every other day one of them just falls out. How is that possible? Wat can I do to prevent that? I have not washed my hair for 2 weeks now.
your mode of attaching is of concern here. If you crotchet the extensions in then work your way on doing better crotcheting particularly at the intersection point of your hair and the extension
I hav always loved doing hair. Alive had dreads before wen my hair was short. And I recently cut it short. Ad I saw a video on Facebook about dreads Ad it inspired me to do dreads. I love seeing Caucasians with locs glad to see they like something of the black culture
Irish, Scottish and Scandinavians knotted their hair too. I think this hairstyle goes back to the 1st human to walk Earth but many cultures have had locs.
It was bought to Africa by the Indians
You don't know how to do dreds
I need someone in Dallas TX area to do back combing and crocheting for me! Anyone know of someone?!?
Nah I didn’t do the twist n rip I did the back comb she was right😅
Hi what does twist and rip mean?.. Ehat part do you rip out and why would anyone want to rip it out?..Genuine question, I'm considering locks and don't know where to start
@@lizkidderstudio I’m looking to starting dreads in my hair I’m wondering what u would suggest me to do first I KNOW NOTHING and YOUR AMAZING
thanks for this great and detailed guide. i had a good 13 years dreadlocks and lost it in 2020 after chemotherapy, now the hair is long enough again and I am looking for a possibility without gel, wax and the like. . i find your method with crocheting best and I'll test it for a while. . thanks for the great video . . your hair look great 👍
I’m doing mine semi free form not into all the products to make them look “nice” of course I want them to look good though not super highly polished couldn’t really be bothered just twisted the sections that formed already just looking for a approximate time to see some kind of results like knots or budding phase
I’m so scared to try them on my hair but I want them so bad 😢 you remind me of Sheri Moon Zombie and you’re so pretty! 🖤
Appropriation at its finest
Hey love your video can you wash your hair with the Dreads❤️
of course
That's how I started my daughters. ❤❤❤😂😂😂😂😂
What do you mean?? Caucasians seem to like TOO much of Black culture 💯
What if u leave single braids in your hair and don't take it down can u start that way as well?
My hair tangles while I am brushing and if I go a day or two WITH OUT brushing I have a MASSIVE rats nest
I never recommend interlocking for straight hairs.
My favorite is to back comb then crochet.
Did my own that way.
Loving this new channel 👏😁
I agree im doing those and i have straight hait
Hey again Lisa! Just realized you’ve asked this a few times, sorry for the delay! Like I said, stay tuned for Sundays video!
Dang wish u were here in the Bay Area. I want locs soooo bad but I’m scared, gotta find the right person 😮💨
I love your videos, thanks for sharing
Sad to see so many people not being able to watch a video without picking fights in the comments.
Anyway Lizz, awesome video. I love using the crochet method you use, I've heard it called a basket stitch too. Once I learnt it, I found it really easy to maintain my own dreads with it. Unfortunately since I have fine flyaway (but thick) hair and mine weren't created with the crochet method, my root maintenance is pretty regular because the fluffies are insane when I wash mine.
Thanks for being here! I like the term basket stitch.. I use 3 different crochet techniques and have no idea what they’re called😆
Best thing with hair you can almost always manipulate it as long as it ain't cut down
If you have textured hair and do the twist method your hair should not come out loose when you wash it.
I think Shes not talking to kinky hair people but whities🙄
It will come loose, depending on how you shampoo it, but almost 1st time it’s going to unravel some
I want your hair Liz!!!!
I’m looking into getting dreads wondering where u would suggest me to start
To cut time in half use the double or triple crochet hook !!!
Might be a pain to get the synths out once they get too long but I mean it is one way to do it. lol
Gurl I love your hair u look like huddle and Flo beautiful blonde gurl fr and I love crocheting!!!
You mentioned not breaking hair and I cringed because I have to break hair to separate and I hate it.❤
STOP CALLING THEN DREADLOCS. THERE'S NOTHING TO DREAD ABOUT THEM. DO YOUR RESEARCH ON THAT.
I know one more method: on wool socks: you take sock and rub your hair like a lot - it takes really lot time but results are quite nice
Super informative. So would u suggest interlocking with that hook thing for shorter kinda micro dreads with straighter hair ?
Awesome video!
Thanks for all the great info. I went with twist n rip 10 months ago and I love my hooks for self maintenance ♡
The way you do interlocking was not right and this is why you didnt get it the way it was to look
Oh man I wish I would of seen this years ago. I didn't know how to do the crochet hook thing that well when I did my dreads and pretty much was way too rough and m you hair got really short when I took my dreads out... I cried. But I'm not doing it again up until I figure it out better lol
Thanks for the knowledge.. I appreciate it.
so im okay with what she does and her hair but why are there no color clients?!? That is really weird.
I think the video is only 4 whities 🙄 i dare u!
Omgggg thank you so Much sending love and light to you😊💕🤙🏾
Really interesting. Twist and rip is easier if you only twist a couple of times. I'm sure others will have sai this 😊 Tfs
I'm considering doing the free form. My hair is very short now, but I'll just leave it alone. No brushing.
Hahaha 😂
I love her voice.
If you know how to crochet with yarn do you think it would be fairly easy to do the crochet method on your own?
WHAT!!!!!!!😬🙄
Many historians believe that India can be credited for the religious origins of dreadlocks. In fact, the Hindu Holy Scriptures, The Vedas, which was written in Indian between 1500 and 1000 BCE, provides the first written historical evidence of dreadlocks.

I've been trying to loc my hair for about 3 months 2 different places money and time very bad experience.
patience is key for the loc journey unless you opt for locs extension that'll give you a 'foreshadow' of how you may appear in natural locs as you grow them beneath the extensions
When you have thin Caucasian hair the second methode is very difficult to achieve
Chile
My hair is longer than a Bob right now, like A little longer than my chin and I can’t wait anymore! I really want my dreadlocks back - but I can’t afford to go to Philly and pay $800-1100 for them. I really wanna just do them myself but idk if I can do it.. 😢
you did it! 👏
How long does your hair need to be in order to start locs??
could even be as short as 2 inches, but the most recommended is 4-6 inche... depends w alot of factors thus, hair type, texture, and locs type too😅
You have such a beautiful radiant energy ❤thanks for all the explanations
How long should my hair be before starting dreads?
Ughhhh, you are adorable 😍
Help!! My dread is too thick in the middle and it looks buldgy, how can I thin it out??
Loving the new channel! Keep ‘em coming! 🖤🖤🖤
Thanks that was very helpful thank you xx
Gracias por la explicación!!! Me encanta tú trabajo!!
How do you maintain locs
😂😂🙏🏻🙏🏻❤️❤️
I like the twist and rip, i may do this myself.
Do u live in Florida ? N could u do my dreads ?
Thank you so much nice video🙏💚💛💖💫🍀✨☀☺
What tech did you use? Love the look of your hair😊
Wish you could do mine. I'm creole so my hair is fine like Caucasians. My locs turned out looking like yours,I'm just African American
I used the backcombing to start the foundation cuse my hair is so soft the I went in with the crochet hook
Your dred journey should bring you joy my friend, don’t be afraid to switch it up 😊
too much wax= lint
Another question: Ik have made dreads in my hair (rip, backcomb, twist, crochet, palmroll) and extended them with synth. extensions. When they are locked to my hair I test the connection to pull on them and the lock is really tight. But every other day one of them just falls out. How is that possible? Wat can I do to prevent that? I have not washed my hair for 2 weeks now.
How are you attaching them to your hair?
your mode of attaching is of concern here.
Even tho my hair is thinner right now because of the layers and softer because of the shampoo I have bought. I just really want dreads because I love doing my hair always . As a kid Ad a white girl my hair has always been more like an afro. This is my always go to style when my hair is short. And I'm hoping I keep them this time because I want long dreads. I really am just a peaceful soul. In a small town. Even though I'm 30. I know I still have spunk in me. So why not throw a few dreads in my hair and call it a night heck call it a journey. Thank you for all the tips and tricks!!!!!
I wonder if steam or a light hit with a hair straightener on backcombing would make it look better.
Like they do when ppl make synthetic dreads
Well yeah you are twisting way too much lol
🤣🤣🤣
Love it . Very educational. Thank you .
U did great explaining that thax
