I've been over thinking dreads for a long time. A lot of videos you see talk about how the roots need to be super tight, the ends should be tight, etc. I unfortunately brushed out my first set of dreads for fear of them 'not being right'. Thank you for your videos, they're very informative.
They tighten over time :) they're no instant thing. The best thing to do is just not worry and let them do their thing. Hair knots whether you want it to or not... which is annoying for people with regular long hair - great for dreadheads :)
Myself back in 1990 I braided my hair and back combed it then got a hard block of bees wax and worked real well I just had a problem when my hair grew at the root i found it hard to dread up, back in those days no white dude would have there dreaded but glad people caught on cos it looks Kool, Peace out
omg thats awesome. thank you so much. im caucasian spaniard and i ve been wanting dreads for a few years. Ive lived mostly with a shaved head but ive been looking for a change up and after a years research, youve simplified it in literally only a few minutes. Kick ass man
I just want to say thanks for all your great videos. I have learned so many new things about dreadlocks. On Tuesday I get my hair divided into sections by a hairdresser and then I'll go myself in the process of making dreadlocks throughout my long hair. Thanks to you I will not commit any silly mistakes as others try to lure me into. You do it all so simple and I am looking forward to get dreadlocks for the first time in my 41 years old life. Thank you from Denmark
Diana Lund Jørgensen I hope they didn't charge you to section off you're hair that would be ridiculous now if they section and dread it then ya it's reasonable to pay
By watching ur videos, ur not telling me anything I don't know lol. Ur videos have given me a ton of confidence :). Even my co workers have noticed them getting shorter and thicker and think they r looking really good and a lot better. At first they called me weird, but now they think the dreads look cool lol.
I love your videos! I've been watching them for about a year now. I'm gonna be 18 in November of next year and hopefully I'll be sharing an apartment with my best friend (I know it sounds childish) and I'll finally be able to get dreadlocks. My parents never let me get them, but I am slowly persuading them. So I might actually start my dreadlocks before then. I just want to thank you for posting these videos because they really taught me a lot. :3
Wow i am so happy to come across you...im starting my dread journey with rip and twirl method now and you have helped me so much!!! Your videos are so clear and easy to understand.
Talk about a throw back. I remember a few yrs ago when I decided to do my dreads and did MASSIVE research and found ur channel on UA-cam and decided twist and rip was how I wanted to go. However I twisted tighter and ripped harder to the point to where after I was finished with one section, my scalp was indeed very tender. Took me about 2.5 weeks to do it all. I did every part of the process on my own. I'm finiky when it comes to my hair. I can only be mad at myself if I don't do it correctly.
Yesss I use this method for the ends of my braids! I don't want to use a shitton of tiny rubber bands so I lock the ends of my braids with the twist & rip, works perfectly :)
Yeyyyy finally i found the right video!!! Have not comb my hair in about 2 weeks my hair already has seccions sibce i have losse hair i tryed 2 parts AND IT WORKED!!!! THANK YOU!!!!
I've been using this method but using the flea comb just to push the knots up tighter every inch or so. I stick it into the mat where it feels too loose and push the knots upward toward the good knotted matted area. I hope i don't regret that. Also I notice you're leaving like 2 inches of space or more at the top. Do I need that much room? I've got about that much room but I've put a rubber band at the top where it felt too loose. Bad idea? It's close to my skull but not squeezed tight against it- maybe a centimeter ish of room between band and skull
After you twist and rip what about the the section of the hair closes to the root? How do you get that to dread since it dosent dread all the way to the root??
Twist them to tighten the locks up. Twist and leave them twisted for a few days if you have a bunch use one of your locks to keep them pulled back after you twist them.
i think loose tips look ok. almost makes the dreads look more natural if they are frayed on the end. im going to have to grow my hair quite a bit before i can start mine
I'll be posting a pic soon to the Facebook page (and emailing one for an entry for dreads of the day). The only ones that look braided are a few in the back. Just washed my dreads last night and they r full of loops and lumps and bumps, and more defined...they look really good at just 4 mos.
I just tried this, and i had one dread half finished, as it wasn't knotting up anymore. I was trying for about an hour, but the dreaded and fine part was still the same length. I got it out for now (which really did hurt) and i will try again with a friend.
I just used the twist and rip to dread my hair this past Thursday. I haven't been able to find a lot of information for maintaining it though. Am I supposed to do anything besides wash it?
Ur video was a god send nice and clear instructions thx 4 takin the time to make this video. Will my locks be alright under a wool hat? Scared ov them comin inraveled while at work lol
Thank you so much for this video! I just made my first dread and I've always wanted them! Exciting! How do you make sure it doesn't come out and how long should you wait to wash it?
Man I dreaded my hair with this method. Loved them. But they started getting really loose 👀 at the base so I just started taking them out to redo them because I thought I did it wrong ! So... its normal for them to get loose ?
@junginj this dread is still in my hair and is tightening up nicely. I prefer dreads not to be started off as tight, since my scalp is aldready sore from the dreading.
so i made two dreads with the T&R method, and it was quite good. I mean i tried the backcomb method but the knots where not that strong and weak. With the T&R method there where strong and it didn't shrink my hair at all.Well okay i know that it needs more time for the dreads to tighten and shrink. So i'd say the T&R method work quite good.Should I keep using this method or should i use the Backcomb method?
I’m really looking into getting dreads myself but I have semi medium long straight hair, sort of like an emo cut lmfao what method would you recommend? And any tips on sectioning hair on your own? Like how to keep sections separated? Anything would really help, love the dreads bro!
I did this method a little differently. I made sure to create knots but I twisted the hair as it was separated into two strands, grabbing two of different sizes each time. Will my hair still lock?
I am getting ready to put dreads in using this method. My hair is very long and very thick. Should I use thinner sections of hair so that drying the dreads is easier? Also, I have been prepping my hair by going longer between washes with just a regular shampoo bar, should it be ok to go ahead? Thanks! Love your videos :)
+Lazy Dreads you definitely do a great job at it :) I also have a question about twist and rip actually.Like when doing so you have to make it really tight at the root? Because I see so many people doing different things with it,where some do it so tight that it hurts their head and they stick out more that way too.but then they say the dreads get loose so they have to make them really tight.I read somewhere though that making it too tight could cause breakage and the dread to fall off or there will be bald spots.so by that I am a bit worried.there was a video where I saw this girl make sure she left a bit of a gap between her scalp and the beginning of her hair when making the dread, but I'm not sure if that would last or not.in this video you don't seem to be doing them uncomfortably tight either, but with a good amount of tight.
It's not so much about tightness, but more how many knots overall that you manage to get in. Twist & Rip only serves to hold the hair in sections - it doesn't actually make finished dreadlocks. It will take months for those knotted sections to lock into finished dreadlocks. Basically you just need to make sure that you're able to create enough knots to make sure that they don't just fall apart and wash out. Obviously the tighter they are, the less likely they are to wash out, but it's not imperative that they're painfully tight, just so long as they're 'tight enough'.
Im pretty sure i just love you.. lol your videos are pretty great nd the way you like talk to people haha if ya know what i mean... explaining different things.. im thinking of dreading a few bits of my hair but im not sure just yet. i dont think i want a full head.. maybe just a few different peices.. haha idk..
I just looked up this video for a friend. i have had dreads before, but only a few. i never did go with a full head of dreads... anyway i really wish i watched THIS video before doing them. it's very descriptive.. fantastic vid! I will do them again (as soon as that hair grows back, i cut them out) but, i do have one question.. how do you prevent dreads from locking up all funky like? when i did mine, they decided they were going to kind of merge together at the top and make kind of a fork. did i go to far from the root, or was i washing them wrong? i must have messed up somewhere.
hi. I am considering starting dreads but am wondering if I do the twist and rip method, how do I maintain (in the initial process as well as when they have matured) the new hair that grows? thanks (:
I never twisted mine back to the natural "lose" form. Kept it twisted after I ripped, twisted it again, ripped, twisted again, ripped. Would it have made a difference and be further along if I would have done it as this video or does it depend on my own texture? Also, I ripped mine as tight as possible and got headaches lol. But so far, so wonderful :).
If it's not relaxed back to the loose form you can get a bit of twisted look or braided artifact in the texture of the hair. It's not a big deal as the locks will loosen and tighten... and loosen and tighten over and over as they lock up and mature and so the initial texture - whether it's T&R looking or braided looking or backcombed looking etc, that texture will be lost anyway. As long as there are enough knots to hold things together, time will do the rest.
Hello :) I recently got started on my dreadlock journey. I started with partial dreads (8 at the nape of my neck and 1 in front by my face) that were started by a friend if mine using a combination of twist and rip and back combing on May 5th. Then about a week ago I started the rest of my head with twist and rip and bit of back combing. I have a few questions an I don't need them answered in one of your Q&A videos but if I could get some answers here that would be much appreciated. 1) My original 10 dreads looked fluffy after using twist and rip but the rest of the dreads that I did recently look almost like braids at some parts. Is this normal and will the braided look eventually go away? 2) My hair locs up pretty fast and my 10 original dreads are pretty tight and mature and the new ones were locing up fast as well but against my better judgment I ended up crocheting several loose sections of hair into the dreads. But I didn't do it the way I've seen or heard you and others describe or demonstrate it. Rather I took long, loose pieces of hair and crocheted them back an forth into a dread all the way down the length of a particular dread down to the loose ends. This fixed the issue of loose hair therefore making my hair more presentable at work but now I'm kicking myself because this has contributed even more to the slightly braided appearance of my dreads. And that appearance is even more prominent because I have caramel and brown highlights in my black hair. My question on this one is whether or not the appearance that has been left by crocheting in these hairs will go away if I stop crocheting in the loose hairs and just maintain my dreads using palm rolling from here on out? 3) And I promise this is the last one. I have a family reunion in a week and I haven't seen my family in two years. I've had issues with some of my family because of my religion and other aspects of who I am and my lifestyle. Because of this, while I want to express who I am (kind of a "this is who I am and I respect who you are so please respect me" kind of attitude) I don't want to show up with frizzy, messy dreads and have to deal with judgment because my dreads are messy. I've heard you and others talk about using aloe like hair gel to tame loose frizzy hairs for an event. My question is will this have any negative impact on my dreads seeing as they're young? Also, we will be swimming in a salt water swimming pool and while I know salt water is good for dreads I'm wondering if I should be concerned about the aloe being more difficult to get out of my dreads if I go swimming with it in my dreads (I would be using pure aloe straight from the plant that I have stored in my fridge, without added dyes or chemicals). Sorry for the long comment with all the questions but some advice would be much appreciated. Love your videos I've been binge watching in my spare time for weeks now.
Btw, my dreads are technical unsectioned. I went with how my hair naturally wanted to section itself since my hair is naturally a bit curly and sections itself.
I have spoken with people who had dreads made with this method and they ended up loosing around 70% of the hair lenght. Would like to hear your insights about that? :)
Thanks for all the videos man. Was wondering if it is beneficial to use overhand knots like where you placed the hairbands at the top and bottom of the knotted section instead of the hairbands?
Andrew Coates I wouldn't. The elastic band only remains in the hair long enough for all the dreadlocks to be started - they're there to help organise the sections of hair so that one section doesn't fall ontop of another while you're trying to work. Once the last dreadlock has been started, all the elastics can come off.
i have coarse curly hair and started freeform dreadlocks almost 4 months ago. but now i'm considering brushing my hair out in some places and choosing another method because my hair keeps clumping together. what do you suggest?
I did this method (with similar length hair) and all the knots ended up towards the bottom of the hair and straight unknotted hair towards the root, about 4-5 inches of straight hair. Will the straight hair eventually lock up?
problem here with locks. I ripped and twisted locks a little bigger than the ones in your video. 5 months later my locks feel stiff when dry, and don't lay down. they sit up in the air. the parts were done square by a licensed professional. why isn't my hair laying down and sitting outward? I don't palm roll, could that be the reason. my hair also looks like thick ropes, not a single thick Strand of hair like one of your locks do. what can I do to get them lay down and fall like yours. they do when wet but when dry they don't. could it be there is still gel in your hair from 3 months ago though it was washed thoroughly several twice til none came out. thank u for all your help
Hey man, thanks for the tutorial. I am planning on making a Halloween mask that involves dreads. Can I use synthetic hair and use this method, AND could I spray something on them to help achieve the "matured" look that you talk about in this video? Thanks. Any and all help is greatly appreciated. 🤘💀
If you're doing partial-dreads and you already twist and ripped and dread, do you need to continuously twist and tip every day to create the actual dread, or do I need to let it do that on its own after I twist and rip my hair once?
Hey! I have wavy slightly curly hair and it's length comes down to about the bottom of my nose on top, what would you recommend for the best way to start dreadlocking my hair?
if you have very thick but very slippery hair that doesnt hold well, is there any way of securing the bottom? like adding some wax or something to ensure it does not slip out. I'm a first timer and am just experimenting
so , i am african american lol my hair is nappy to an extent but i have wet it and comb it completely so no knots. any extra advice on my hair per say?
I section a layer, make the dreads and then section the next layer, make the dreads. I couldn't show how to do it unless I was creating a whole head of dreadlocks. If at some point I do have to section a whole head of dreadlocks, I'll show it, but it's unlikely to happen anytime soon.
My friend gave me dreads yesterday and honestly I didn't think much of the tightness of the knots he was creating. Afterwards I was looking at them in the mirror and I noticed just how loose they are (some so loose the entire thing fell apart overnight) as well as the presence of gaps between some of the "knots" (barely knotted). Will they lock up and form true dreads eventually or should I comb them out and start over?
Lindsey Childs It's pretty hard to say for sure - the first wash will probably answer it best - if the hair is still knotted off into sections, then they will eventually form dreadlocks in those sections... but if everything just falls totally loose, then you'll need to do-over if you want to keep the sections.
Hey man, I have sheep like curly hair the becomes a frizzy fro. What would b a good method to use and what is a good hair length to start. My hair is shorter atm and was wandering if they can grow into healthy dreads from it only being shoulder length.
brendensdad01 Backcomb, but there's none of the backcombed length there anymore. Most starting methods eventually end up with the same result so it's best to just use what will be the most effective for your situation.
Hello! I want dreads but when my boyfriend did them the hair didnt feel dreaded. It felt more like a twisted mess...was he doing it right? I just dont want to spend money for dreads that could be done at home, i just keep doubting that its correct. Thank you! 😌
I'm mixed and have half white/half black hair so what method would work best? Should I straighten my hair first? Pretty much just need a lot of help with this. It's my first time ever doing this.
Hi Jazmin, that's a tricky one. For African textured hair Twisting is one of the most popular methods, it's simple and the hair will hold the twists, however Twisting does very little for Caucasian hair and so if your hair does not have a tight curl to it, you might be best off with one of the options that will work on Caucasian hair such as backcomb or twist & rip, both of these methods will work on African and Caucasian hair. Of course there is also natural / freeform which will work on either type of hair, but the results will be different and so it depends on what you're going for.
I just started my dreadlock journey please help me I watched your videos but how do I wash them and how often I want to use as less product as possible because I don't want them to get gross...please help!!!
I am going to be starting dreads on my husbands hair tonight and was just curious how to dread the new hair once it becomes long enough since you wont be able to "Twist and Rip" Through the already present knot. Does it dread itself, or...?
I've been over thinking dreads for a long time. A lot of videos you see talk about how the roots need to be super tight, the ends should be tight, etc. I unfortunately brushed out my first set of dreads for fear of them 'not being right'. Thank you for your videos, they're very informative.

I find a really good way to start dreads is to braid the hair at the roots then twist and rip and backcomb abit. It worked for me.
Man!! I've been doing the same but mine ended up getting really loose and I thought I did it wrong I haven't tried back combing though
deiced to make a single T&R dread to go under the rest of my hair. found this very informative and reassuring. THANK YOU

Im pretty sure i just love you.. lol your videos are pretty great nd the way you like talk to people haha if ya know what i mean... explaining different things.. im thinking of dreading a few bits of my hair but im not sure just yet. i dont think i want a full head.. maybe just a few different peices.. haha idk..
Is it possible to “undread “ your reads at that maturity and length, or will you have to simply cut it all?
I just looked up this video for a friend. i have had dreads before, but only a few. i never did go with a full head of dreads... anyway i really wish i watched THIS video before doing them. it's very descriptive.. fantastic vid! I will do them again (as soon as that hair grows back, i cut them out) but, i do have one question.. how do you prevent dreads from locking up all funky like? when i did mine, they decided they were going to kind of merge together at the top and make kind of a fork. did i go to far from the root, or was i washing them wrong? i must have messed up somewhere.
hi. I am considering starting dreads but am wondering if I do the twist and rip method, how do I maintain (in the initial process as well as when they have matured) the new hair that grows? thanks (:
Vilma Rodriguez dont worry about the roots they will lock on their own
king capo what about the tips
I just say its a way of helping your hair dread. :) I do it here and there with different bits. Rubbing them too. But not so much..
I got my twist and rip dreadlocks yesterday any tips?
Don't wash em.
Great video, I have 3a hair what method would you best recommend?
Will this work on coily hair or is there a better method for me?
If I wanted to take my dreads out ( after I've done this method ) would it be the same as taking any other dread out ?
What do you do during the following months
Should I use this method if I want to get dreads like lil pump
Hi. The hair must be clean? Thanks, regards
What is the best method in your opinion
problem here with locks.
Omg, so i did it all wrong 😞
I should've watched this video before doing it
And thank you for every information ❤😊
I'm curious about dreading grey hair and if it works as easily. Also, is there such a thing as dreading beards?
If you're doing partial-dreads and you already twist and ripped and dread, do you need to continuously twist and tip every day to create the actual dread, or do I need to let it do that on its own after I twist and rip my hair once?
No, just leave your hair alone. Let them mature, continued twisting and ripping will slow down the process.
I'm considering dreadlocks as soon as my hair grows a bit more. Twist & Rip or Backcomb? Is the mature dread the same either way?
Hey! I have wavy slightly curly hair and it's length comes down to about the bottom of my nose on top, what would you recommend for the best way to start dreadlocking my hair?
I started one of my dreads today to see really how it's gonna go. No rubber bands tho
26 seconds in and I love you already @LazyDreads
if you have very thick but very slippery hair that doesnt hold well, is there any way of securing the bottom? like adding some wax or something to ensure it does not slip out. I'm a first timer and am just experimenting
When I try this method instead of creating knots it just twists around what can I do to fix this?
so , i am african american lol my hair is nappy to an extent but i have wet it and comb it completely so no knots. any extra advice on my hair per say?
How does your dread loc up to your scalp? Does it eventually loc up at the scalp?
Hey lazydreads, could you do a video on how to do the sectioning as I struggle with this part. Thank you plez
Helpful videos bro!! Which methid did you use? Your dreads are nice man.
brendensdad01 Backcomb, but there's none of the backcombed length there anymore.
Thank you! 😌
I have been thinking about it but will they fall out sometimes I only won't to put two in my hair?
Does this mean that after you do the twist and rip you don't have to do anything else after to your dread lock or do you still have to treat it
I'm mixed and have half white/half black hair so what method would work best?
