The explanation of the difference between Stage Manager and External Display Support of what they are and how to use them was clearly delivered. Well done.
The problem I have with it right now is that it still feels like it's still in beta, even on a stable build. Certain apps don't work at all without opening on the iPad and then switching over, or doesn't even work at all on the external display. So I don't recommend it to power users until every app doesn't break when you involve the external display
Agreed! I tried to like, and really want to, but there are just so many issues that remain. Feels like they improved the limitations on window sizing and placement, and that’s about it. Way too many issues.
Just compare Stage Manager on MacOS to iPadOS... the latter is incredibly CLUNKY compared to the former. That's the problem with multi-tasking on iPadOS while file-management is also lacking. Apple is really dragging its feet concerning making basic desktop-OS functionality equivalent on the two OSs they manage... one can only wonder why they'd drag it out for so long with sub-optimal aka beta build.............
You can airplay to your airpods while connected to a monitor via TB4 port. So if you want audio to be different from your display source you can airplay to any airplay enabled speaker.
Fernando: I wrote this in reply to a poster’s comment, but in case you didn’t see it: As of today it has been resolved! I now have “iPad” as a selection on control panel when selecting audio output while using external monitor. Thanks god! I am so sick of having to disconnect my iPad from the monitor for a Zoom meeting. Plus it’s nice to finally be able to use the iPad Pro’s amazing speakers.
Great explanations. I went through most of these when iPad os17 came out. Could not get extended to work without first having the keyboard and mouse connected. Thanks for including the solution! 🐬
one of the biggest struggle i had with the old school split screen multitasking on my ipad air 4 was the contextual cursor; it struggled to identify which app do i want to type in with 2 apps side by side. this basically killed my interest in using my ipad to do productive work for a while (bear in mind i was carrying a keyboard case around, which was cumbersome and heavy, and wasnt always useful). it was so bad i ditched the Logitech Combo Touch altogether and just gave up on the idea that ipad was a multitasking machine of any kind and use it as a youtube machine. with stage manager though, i might just get back to the ipad productivity bandwagon again. cant wait for the new iPad Pro in 2024.
Stage manager is great. IPad Pro 12.9 M2 is my Main and only work horse computer. My only gripe with extended monitor support is that when it first came out I bought a monitor to use with it, only £100 but it work great with a usb-c to hdmi cable. Sadly after a few months it stopped working and only does mirror screen. I think I finally found out why. The monitor is HDMI 1.4 and I have read somewhere from Apple you need to use HDMI 2.0. Thanks for that now I have a monitor just for screen mirror only until I can afford a new one. At least I got to experience the first version of extended monitor for a bit I guess
Here’s the thing… someone like me who has always used windows, doesn’t just jump into a new operating system at once. Thanks to your videos, I have gradually moved from Windows into iOS. Videos and information like your channel have made it a comfortable move and I can’t see going back. I am not a heavy user or a gamer and so far, this 12.9 pro has slowly been replacing a Windows PC, Windows tablet, Windows laptop all in one. A magnetic case for using it as a tablet. A Brydge keyboard for laptop work. A dock for desk space office work. Thank you for the videos.
🐬 - I am really liking Apples improvements to Stage Manager. Im glad they removed the weird keyboard requirement for external support but i wish they would steal Samsungs virtual trackpad and keyboard implementations to just make it seamless. At the same time I wish Samsug would steal Apples multiple "desktop" support. Sure on dex you can have tons of apps open/minimized but its still just 1 desktop and no easy way to manage everything thats open (even with 12, 16, 24 gigs of ram) and seamlessly switch between workstations. Thanks for continuing this series and keeping us informed on the stagemanager improvements!
Hey, Apple, why not let users use ipad screen as keyboard and trackpad? While everything else is on bigger and better monitor. You don’t need any peripherals in this case
I was very excited to see the option to set Stage Manager on the External Display….every time I come home and go to the home office to dock it, the external display reverts to Mirror(ed). I thought with my 5th gen iPad Pro, it would hold the setting…..nope. Still in the same loop of pulling in iPad and having to go to settings to turn off mirroring…..from the highs to such disappointment!!!
Same- oh and then there's always the fact that it won't draw a charge through the usb c - so you'd even need to plug it in, in order to show everyone how bloody useless apple are. For me it's not incompetence it's apple being controlling and not wanting to damage sales on other apple products. But then not wanting to damage sales, They are gonna lose customers, loyalty And trust, think I'm gonna buy decent android tab .

Talk about being stuck inside the box… not you personally but the whole adapting an iPad to be the laptop you didn’t buy thing. So convoluted. For me, my iPad Pro is just a more powerful big phone that frees me from being tied down by something on a desk… and that’s fine. It meets 99% of my needs. The other 1% is met by an inexpensive refurbished Windows PC or laptop. With iCloud, software that syncs and works the same across both platforms, USB and Bluetooth accessories, etc., you can be both fully mobile and desktop-bound to your heart’s content. Personally, I do almost everything from my couch and I just wirelessly use my 4K TV when I need to see something on a larger screen. This works particularly well if you have an Apple TV box, but most smart TV’s work fine with Airplay.
Not usable in Professional setting: MS Teams still has the weird error with external monitor and iPad in landscape orientation, that the camera for videocalls is wrongly rotated by 90 degrees and there is no option to fix that. Absolute Dealbreaker when using Apple Magic Keyboard and external display. Internal display works fine, but as soon as MS Teams is displayed on the external monitor the error is there. PLEAS DO A VIDEOON THIS ERROR TO BRING THAT TO MICROSOFTS ATTENTION! Error is there for ages.
I'm experiencing the exact problem, it so very annoying. I use my iPad at work as my main device (even with Citrix to connect the the office's Window environment) and want to be able tu use an external monitor for Teams as well. And I wish all apps that use a camera can now use the external webcam as well, just like Facetime can.
3 Dots at the top with the selections are still WAY too small. Us folk visually impaired it’s almost impossible to locate, even with all accessibility options on. Then there’s the round cursor…. For the love of Steve Jobs soul, give us the traditional Mac cursor shape on the iPad.
Stage manager 17 is a big improvement. But the burning question still remains: Why get and iPad Pro AND a Magic Keyboard for considerably more money that an Air? Just because of the touch sensitive screen? Hmmm…? 🧐🤔 Freeform is getting exciting too. When magnification becomes infinite and boards are able to be ‘nested’ it’s gonna be a proverbial game-changer…
For some reason, ever since this extended display was made available with iOS 16, my iPad (Air 5th Generation) has my orientation in the “Display & Brightness- Arrangement” the reverse of what my iPad is actually in. 9:13
I tried my iPad Pro as a laptop replacement and it didn’t last long. No window manager to tile windows next to each other? wth? My external monitor display was very dim compared to when my laptop is connected. I looked into continuing my current docker application migration to a new server, and there was no way to open a console to test containers locally before deploying them to production. I could go on, but let’s just say an iPad is not ready to replace a MacBook.
Hi Fernando, just checked the audio with stagemanager connected to an external monitor. I could switch from monitor audio to iPad audio (I tried it with youtube on the monitor with you video playing).
This is decent! Still will wait another year or two before buying an ipad again for serious use though to see how this grows…i would love a 15 inch ipad a lot though. After using the galaxy tab ultra, ipads just feel…awful.
I was excited to try the external monitor and very disappointed to learn that I can not port sound to the monitor any longer with the new update. I tried multiple apps and different cables and doc with no luck at all. You would think a release candidate would have tested this across multiple monitors and TV’s to ensure it worked, after all it worked before. I like the ability to adjust the window size, but seriously not being able to hear on my TV without using headphones is a serious fail!
Search some videos about this, because now you can switch between the iPad and the monitor, try to search. If It doesnt work for you, i'm Sorry i don't know.
Great video. I have the magic keyboard and would love to try your clamshell hack. Can you please explain how to set that up? I'm using my M1 iPad Pro with my studio display. Thanks!
When using a HDMI cable to usb-c (my Ipad air has this) - the sound is in the hdmi signal / speakers connected to your monitor. But in my opinion this technology is for apple standards less good then for example in windows: I have an external screen of 21:9 (ultra wide) - and I have an app to watch some movies or series on. When extending the screen - the app won't fit the screen like for example vlc mediaplayer can. It doesn't scale to fit the screen at all etc etc... After all I was surprised I could connect my Apple ipad air to an external screen (not from apple) with using a cable hdmi to usbc (not from apple) :-D so after all I was pretty amazed this is possible now
Hi buddy. Is being able to extend your monitor only available on beta software? I have an 5th ed 12.9M1 and am connecting to my ultra wide screen via HDMI (HDMI into monitor then Uni 6in1 to usb connected to iPad ). There is no option within my settings as you have shown to select extend display. My screen is only mirroring. I spoken to Apple support who think this is not possible to do. Really want to extend display. Any help would be appreciated
🐬Stage manager functionality and external monitor support is much improved on my 12.9-inch M1 iPad Pro. But what I have gained in iPad OS 17 with this regard, I have lost with respect to my ability to side load apps via Altstore etc, as Apple have changed the protocols. So, my M1 iPad Pro will never be my main computer because iPad OS is so inadequate as a modern OS, with too much missing functionality. It cripples fantastic hardware to exist in a wall garden ecosystem of mostly mediocre smartphone apps, Logic Pro for iPad being one of the few exceptions. I want to be able to side load apps such as UTM, Dolphin emulator, etc. and not be limited to apps that only Apple allows me to run. The M series iPad Pros are the biggest waste of money going which begins to explain why their sales volumes are suffering compared with iPhones and Mac computers.
Love that Apple has updating iPadOS/UNIX while still making so us normals can still pick it up and use it the same way we have in the pass. Hate when things do not work the same way they did before. I wish I could have a DEX experience on my iPad pro, but with no mouse pointer (what is that circle joke) it everything except closed to a laptop. Also stuck with App Store thst blocks everything like emulators.
Are we able to use a touchscreen compatible monitor as an extended display and still be able to use the touchscreen on that second display with stage manager?
Another awesome video! The audio issue where it will not play on the iPad and is a bit of a mess about to work on AirPods, is the only thing holding me back from using my iPad as my full time machine!

Thanks for the Stage Mgr., info. I have an older monitor Dynex brand actually. Can you tell me what I would use to connect my M1 iPad Pro to the Dynex? It has ports for HDMI and USB, but not Thunderbolt due to its age. Any Colour resolution requirements preferred? Thanks in advance for any tips you can offer.
It’s just so painful to watch apple trying so hard to make iPadOS useful. The only reason for them not putting MacOS on it is so they can still sell MacBooks.
Can we use this feature with non type c monitor There are some type c to hdmi cable available in market will this feature work on them Because my monitor didn’t have a type c port
When I connect my ipad pro to external monitor, in arrangement menu my iPad show as portrait mode rather than landscape, can anyone help, what is this happening it is causing teams call camera rotate when I move Teams to external monitor.
Is there a way to use the iPad as a viewfinder and even controller for the camera on an iPhone. Maybe even if it's connected via USB on the 15. You seem like someone who would know! lol
This is simple my 12.9 iPad Pro (M2) is my laptop and has been with the other older iPad Pro’s. Now with DaVinci Resolve, FCP, Photoshop, Affinity Publisher, etc…..my iMac is now my “truck” for the heavy lifting. I also love Stage Mgr. I hope Apple continues to improve it so it is just like what is done on the Mac.
Thank you so much! I personally think the iPad is not for everyone, it’s mostly for creatives who desire freedom and flexibility, I’m glad that Apple is making improvements. Once again thanks for sharing!
do you ever having external monitor flickering problem? my ipad pro m2 running the latest software seems causing filckering external monitor, does it require 120hz refresh rate monitor to match ipad pro display refresh rate?
Still prefer the flexibility of my Samsung Tab S9. With Dex, it is a powerhouse, particularly when connected to an external monitor or tv. Stage Manager is a wannabe.
Thanks for the video! I have an iPad Air 5th gen with M1 chip. I can connect to my 4K TV and use stage manager fine with extended display. However, when I connect to my monitor, I am only able to mirror the display and it does not allow stage manager to take over and use an extended display... Ive checked multiple forums and others have the same issue... any tips?
I have same problem. I use to be able to at the start of iPadOS 16 but then it stopped working. I think it is because Apple stopped support for HDMI 1.4 and only supports 2.0. My monitor is 1.4 and I read somewhere from Apple you need HDMI 2.0. 😢
@@deejayvrThanks for that, I should have realized that Apple would do something to make you spend more money lol. Well jokes on them because If I need to spend more it definitely will be on a monitor brand other than Apple.
The explanation of the difference between Stage Manager and External Display Support of what they are and how to use them was clearly delivered. Well done.

Hopefully support from apps to have full screen output to a display. Apple TV is great and extends really well full screen, all others don't yet

You can choose to play the audio over ipad speakers. You need to do it from the ipad drag down menu.
Thank you for this video. It taught me a few things.
I wish they would bring stage manager to some of the other iPads. The mini 6 would be much more capable if they could leverage it

It seems that is not true extended monitor mode, because you can't move open work windows from the device to the monitor or vice versa.
Thank you! Awesome video!! What about dual monitor support?
So you can run two monitors off an iPad and not mirror the display?
Hi Fernando, just checked the audio with stagemanager connected to an external monitor. I could switch from monitor audio to iPad audio (I tried it with youtube on the monitor with you video playing).
Can you DM me a video of it on Twitter? @nandoprince93.
That would be so helpful
My ipad takes at least 30 tries each time before it finally connects to my external monitor. is there any way i can fix this?
This is decent! Still will wait another year or two before buying an ipad again for serious use though to see how this grows…i would love a 15 inch ipad a lot though. After using the galaxy tab ultra, ipads just feel…awful.
You're pretty good at explaining things. Thanks!
Also, is there a way to slow down the speed in which you are speaking. I have an older model brain.
I don’t have the external display option in multitasking tab
🐬needed video.i enjoyed the tutorial format. Explaining the in and out at present.
Still can't use xcode to developing applications. Hopes the release of iPadOS version 20 will do.
I have iPad 2018 it’s don’t work with msi screen 😭😭😭 still have the black line both side
whats the best accessory (keyboard vs keyboard w. track pad ) is ideal to buy for the ipad pro so we can use it with an external display?
you've really explained it very well

I just want the iPad pro to use with my TV in full screen portrait mode.
well the Plugable 8-in-1 USB C Hub work with ipad air m2 so i can use my monitor
Thank you! Great vid.
Great video. I have the magic keyboard and would love to try your clamshell hack. Can you please explain how to set that up? I'm using my M1 iPad Pro with my studio display. Thanks!
Everything sounded really good except no sound from the iPad lol
When using a HDMI cable to usb-c (my Ipad air has this) - the sound is in the hdmi signal / speakers connected to your monitor. when i am connected to external monitor, I could choose ipad for audio no problem
Thanks for sharing. Blessings on your day 🐬
i cannot move any windows around in stage manager. only able to adjust the size but moving them doesnt work
Hi buddy. Is being able to extend your monitor only available on beta software? That's my doubt too. Did you find out? Use the iPad with the extended screen mode will help me a lot
External Monitor support is getting better all the time but I hope we can support two monitors soon.
🐬Stage manager functionality and external monitor support is much improved on my 12.9-inch M1 iPad Pro. The M series iPad Pros are the biggest waste of money going which begins to explain why their sales volumes are suffering compared with iPhones and Mac computers.
Can you full screen all games/apps on external display?
Just connected my LG external display to the iPad Pro 12 iOS 17 and “External Display” does not show up. What am I missing? Thanks.
You need to turn on the external display manually. It doesn’t automatically wakes up the display like Windows laptop does
He lied
Love that Apple has updating iPadOS/UNIX while still making so us normals can still pick it up and use it the same way we have in the pass. Hate when things do not work the same way they did before.

What about file manager? Is it possible to sync google drive like on macOS?
It does not solve the problem, that no real applications to use... There are dumb versions of mac apps on ipados, but those are more of a joke than real apps... This is faaaaaaar far far from being a computer... Maybe for some basic users.
File manager is a mess, way better in Mac os. That's enough for stick to pc/Mac instead of iPad
I managed to get my iPad play audio Wien connected to external monitor through AirPlay. So i guess it thinks it sends audio to itself 😂
I wish I could have a DEX experience on my iPad pro, but with no mouse pointer (what is that circle joke) it everything except closed to a laptop. Also stuck with App Store thst blocks everything like emulators.
Is it possible to use chrome extensions on an iPad ? This is the only thing I need to be able to go 100% iPad
Are we able to use a touchscreen compatible monitor as an extended display and still be able to use the touchscreen on that second display with stage manager?
I want to know this too
Another awesome video! The audio issue where it will not play on the iPad and is a bit of a mess about to work on AirPods, is the only thing holding me back from using my iPad as my full time machine!
As of today it has been resolved! I now have “iPad” as a selection on control panel when selecting audio output while using external monitor. Thanks god! I am so sick of having to disconnect my iPad from the monitor for a Zoom meeting. Plus it’s nice to finally be able to use the iPad Pro’s amazing speakers.
R u gonna update your ipad next year with the m3?
What’s the difference between Dexter and stage manager
Thanks for the Stage Mgr., info. I have an older monitor Dynex brand actually. Can you tell me what I would use to connect my M1 iPad Pro to the Dynex? It has ports for HDMI and USB, but not Thunderbolt due to its age. Any Colour resolution requirements preferred? Thanks in advance for any tips you can offer.
Just wondering could I use my old LED apple display with a iPad Pro m2?
New to all this. Are there touch monitors that would work this way?
How do you disable to the today view in iOS 17?
It’s just so painful to watch apple trying so hard to make iPadOS useful. The only reason for them not putting MacOS on it is so they can still sell MacBooks.
Can we use this feature with non type c monitor
There are some type c to hdmi cable available in market will this feature work on them
Because my monitor didn’t have a type c port
hdmi to hdmi plus dongle works perfectly fine
great video!
When I connect my ipad pro to external monitor, in arrangement menu my iPad show as portrait mode rather than landscape, can anyone help, what is this happening it is causing teams call camera rotate when I move Teams to external monitor.
It’s only mirrored after I updated it to 17 pfttttttttttt
Is there a way to use the iPad as a viewfinder and even controller for the camera on an iPhone. Maybe even if it's connected via USB on the 15. You seem like someone who would know! lol
Apple Watch has that functionality but not the iPad currently
Is an adapter needed to connect iPad Air 2024 to a monitor?
Is the cable usbc to usbc?
dongle plus hdmi to hdmi/ c to c both work
Nice, I’m iPad centric.
🐬 excellent presentation
Can we swith extended display into vertical display with ipad?
This is simple my 12.9 iPad Pro (M2) is my laptop and has been with the other older iPad Pro’s. Now with DaVinci Resolve, FCP, Photoshop, Affinity Publisher, etc…..my iMac is now my “truck” for the heavy lifting. I also love Stage Mgr. I hope Apple continues to improve it so it is just like what is done on the Mac.

Any portable monitor compatible with Ipad Pro m series?
Thank you so much! I personally think the iPad is not for everyone, it’s mostly for creatives who desire freedom and flexibility, I’m glad that Apple is making improvements. Once again thanks for sharing!
is this still not available on not m1 iPad pros?
do you ever having external monitor flickering problem? my ipad pro m2 running the latest software seems causing filckering external monitor, does it require 120hz refresh rate monitor to match ipad pro display refresh rate?
Like the fact that iPad OS now allows you to connect webcams via usb c and FaceTime picks it up
Is there any difference in battery 🔋 ?
Between iOS 16 and 17 ?
It’s not noticeable

My external monitor goes to sleep mode when I connect it to my m1 iPad Pro
Can anyone help me with this issue please 🙏🏽
How does it act on ultralight monitors?
This video may be old, but you just helped rationalize migrating to an iPad-only setup.
Will the iPad charge when connected to an external monitor via TB or are we limited to work in this mode until the battery drains out?
It charges at the same time
Gaming is still not working with the StageManager…
It works, just not in full screen
@@9to5Mac You‘re damn right! 🤨
How about IPAd 10
Samsung allows the sound to come from the phone or tablet.
iPads now can as well. I guess they have fixed it
where do you get the lead plz
No it cant. Maybe it can if we are still using softwares from 2005
🔥 let’s gooo Nando!
Still prefer the flexibility of my Samsung Tab S9. With Dex, it is a powerhouse, particularly when connected to an external monitor or tv. Stage Manager is a wannabe.
Hello could you please tell me the which html cable are you used? Any link?
Amazon basic works just fine
@@deejayvr haven’t thought about the HDMI versions! will read up on my monitor specs, will let you know if i get the same results
@@deejayvrThanks for that, I should have realized that Apple would do something to make you spend more money lol. Well jokes on them because If I need to spend more it definitely will be on a monitor brand other than Apple.
Can I use stage manager with a wireless display adapter
probably not
are there speakers that can connect?
I NEED APP ICONS ON DISPLAY MONITOR DESKTOP
