I’ve been using my 2020 iPad Pro as my main computer since the day it released. Absolutely love the experience; however, after over 3 years of trying to force it to act as a computer (running a virtual machine to do my architectural work) I finally bought a 14in MacBook Pro. My first time with a Mac computer, but so far the experience has been fantastic. I still love my iPad, but unfortunately had to accept that Apple just doesn’t want it to be able to completely live in a world of its own.
I can't really understand how anyone can meaningfully work with just an iPad Pro (other than office / PowerPoint or light programming or multimedia editing) or, if it's attached to a big screen, how do you manage to work limited by the iPadOS / tablet apps. The hardware is there, but the software doesn't. I even have a Mac Mini M1 and as a desktop computer, other than for multimedia editing or office, it's a pain in the @$$. To buy a Mac and have to work with VMs, it's a waste of money. Since then I invested on a Surface Pro 8 and at home, I attach it to a strong eGPU (connected to a big 4K monitor). That works very well, both for dual window and 3D apps.
@@ricarmig depends what all you need to get done I guess. I like the iPad Pro because it’s a comfortable device to use casually when work is done and seamlessly works with my phone. But yeah, if you need specific software it can be annoying. For presentation work I like it a lot; between Adobe apps, procreate and Sketchup I can do what I would on a normal computer but with the benefit of sketching on the screen. The reality for me is that no surface model spec is powerful enough to natively do what I need anyway, so I went with doing all of my personal computing and work that can be done on a light snappy iPad Pro, and dock it to run windows when I needed that. Not a perfect solution, but use any device 8-10 hours a day for 3 years and you’ll have a pretty good rhythm down lol
Thats actually crazy. Its amazing. Native support for fullscreen monitor connection and ability to connect to external webcam is surreal. If only the same function available on ipad mini, that would be amazing.
I agree, but I still don‘t understand how you do that with the iPad Pro either. I just got the studio display, but I can‘t get the iPad to use the studio display‘s camera. Would a thunderbolt dock with various thunderbolt ports help?

My iPad Pro M1 12.9" is a fun companion to my M2 16" Macbook Max, but I've encountered some issues with iPad OS copy/paste, buggy apps, and missing features. While it serves as a second monitor, backup, and entertainment device, I see it more as a Pro accessory for my Macbook, rather than a fully Pro device on its own.

Ipad is impressive nowadays, but I still doubt about the battery durability especially for replacing main device such as laptop/PC. I had one to replace my laptop and pen display (as an artist) then the battery could not stay long with plugged in cable, the battery expanded and pushed the screen. I think it was because I used the Ipad for hours everyday and kept using it even when I charge it. That was the complicated troubles started. The screen got some white spots, big leaked light in the center of the screen, and darker spots in some parts of the screen. I think the main issue of Ipad is the battery. Now, my Ipad is completely dead just months ago.
yeah, I have the same concern. Pushing to an external monitor is energy-consuming, it even heats up laptops. Surface Pros become noticeably hot when connected to an external monitor, even though the modern ones all have fans. I suspect as thin devices as iPads are it is harder to dissipate extra heat generated when connected. Thus I wouldn't use iPads like this for long periods of time, they are just not designed for that. Yes, MBA M1/M2 do not have fans either but they still are much larger devices with proper heat sinks and plenty of possibility for dissipation.
I love my course mate's Surface pro She would run R codes and data visualization on it, things I wish the ipad could do. But at the end of the day, iPad is intended to be a companion and not a desktop replacement. It still cannot run desktop apps.
Thanks, tried it out, and it does help. Only I found it closes windows. For instance, I have several tabs open in Safari, cmd+w won‘t quit Safari, just close the tabs one by one 😅. In apps without multiple tabs, however, it does close the app ;-)
Which docking station we need to use to charge iPad while connecting to monitor.. Also, could you advise if you continuously use iPad with the monitor, do you feel iPad is getting hot?
I've tried this out of curiosity and I would describe it as "barely usable". External bluetooth mice have crazy lag that makes it feel like you're moving through molasses and the scroll wheel behaves oddly. You can't scale the external monitor UI so everything is blown up huge and wastes tons of screen space. Lots of iPad apps just don't behave properly with windowed resizing in stage view, even Apple's own apps. And sometimes they will launch prompts that you can't even see or interact with. It's totally half-baked. The only thing I think iPad's external monitor support would be useful is for occasional use like, you need to project in a conference room and show some Keynote/PowerPoint deck on the projector, while keeping your notes on the iPad. As a desktop setup... sorry you bought the wrong computer for this.
I tried last year my ipad pro 12.9 to a 32" Benq monitor and the screen resolution was not sharp. I mostly use Safari and need text to be sharp not hazzy. Any one seen if this is a issue with new updates

I love my course mate's Surface pro
She would run R codes and data visualization on it, things I wish the ipad could do. But at the end of the day, iPad is intended to be a companion and not a desktop replacement. It still cannot run desktop apps.
It could be a replacement for people who do causal work
@@ThisIsE True. I used it in my undergrad for research and lots of typing.
By the way, lovely video.
Love the content.
Also letting you know, cmd+w quits apps 😉
Thanks, tried it out, and it does help. Only I found it closes windows. For instance, I have several tabs open in Safari, cmd+w won‘t quit Safari, just close the tabs one by one 😅. In apps without multiple tabs, however, it does close the app ;-)
Love the reviews! Absolutely informative and very helpful. Thanks @ThisisE.
Glad it was helpful!
Is it possible to charge iPad while connecting to monitor
Absolutely
Which docking station we need to use to charge iPad while connecting to monitor.. Also, could you advise if you continuously use iPad with the monitor, do you feel iPad is getting hot?
i use ipad pro M1 12.9 and its not heat much even charging within@@sherifmudavan
