I could go iPad only. Since I bought my M1 iPad Pro, I've been using it more than my Mac, and if I had to choose between one or the other, id go with my iPad.
That’s my set up for the last 3 yrs. 🎉

Now i use my m1 ipad pro only for 1 year as every thing entertainment working learning gaming
When my MacBook was in for a repair, I used my iPad Pro only for a few weeks. It definitely grew on me and I realized it's almost possible to completely use it 100% of the time. With external display support, it makes it a reality.
I recently sold my old laptop and got an 11’ M2 iPad Pro. I paired it with the Logitech combo case and keyboard, a wireless mouse and a 30’ ultra wide curved monitor and that’s it. It works amazing and I feel with every OS update it works even better. I would recommend it to anyone who doesn’t need specific desktop software in their daily tasks. It even recognized my Poly speaker for calls or just to consume media.

I started to go iPad only a few weeks ago. It works quite fine. I can 90% of my work and entertainment stuff covered by the iPad.

No one in our family requires an iPad Pro, so this iPad fits our needs well. I’ve never had complaints on my Apple purchases and this iPad follows suit. Def worth the money.
Just giving my contribution. Multitasking is not about cramming as many applications as possible on the screen by creating a mosaic. Multitasking is about switching swiftly between applications to complete a task. The stage manager helps to accelerate the application switching process by keeping the windows of the most recent applications visible and accessible. The application in focus can have the optimal window size for the task at hand, neither too large nor too small. The window size is determined by the balance between its content and the empty space around it. The empty space around the centered and focused window draws the user's attention to its content while allowing the background windows of the previous applications to be seen. This way of organizing the screen content reminds me of the importance of negative space to highlight what matters, similar to the concept of "MA" in Japanese culture. When needed, it is possible to have more than one window in the foreground following the same principles mentioned above. By the way, great video.

I'm planning on this setup and just curious regarding the Ipad's battery. Will it affect if the Ipad is plugged in all the time?
I have a 12.9" M1 iPad Pro, a Samsung Tab S7 FE and a Lenovo Chromebook Duet 5. Of those 3, the one I rate best at handling external displays is the Duet 5.
Not only can you choose where the sound comes from, but you can extend the display to the external (have dual displays), Turn off the display of the Duet and still use the external monitor and with multiple desktop, I can flip between desktops that focus on work, media, gaming etc. It even runs VS Code natively on my Linux partition. I paid $325+ tax for it, and I am always astonished it has more functionality with an external monitor, than my $1800+ tax iPad Pro, which didn't even have external display support 8 months ago.
Would love to see an update to this video in light of the recent addition of Final Cut Pro & Logic Coming to iPads.

Thank you so much for first specifying that only M1 iPads get this feature. I am on iPad Pro first generation so I believe it won’t work for me. Please let me know if there is a workaround on this.
I appreciate your comments about getting used to the iPad paradigm. Any new platform can be frustrating while learning its pros and cons. It seems that many issues you've discovered involve the external display; this suggests that a laptop user without a large display would be pretty happy switching to iPad for basic productivity.
realistically an iPad Air does majority of the normal day work tasks. iPad Pro if people want to spend their money if they are not using a MacBook at all.. I use my M1 MacBook for my photography and to run Final Cut using the BENQ 27" 2705u... Using the USB-C very nice...

0:37 the iPad air doesn't actually have thunderbolt support, which means that an way cheaper USB-C hub does the same thing. Of course a thunderbolt hub will work but you won't get all of the features and it costs more, only the iPad Pro has thunderbolt support
I am watching the set up. Have not finished the vid yet. Love it. I am a heavy apple user. However, I do outsource non apple tech like mouse and key board. I can relate to what you are demonstrating. Great job.

that iPad being turned on all the time is the killer of this whole idea. I feel like it being off will make sense.
One cool suggestion i saw was to have an ipad home screen page full of control widgets, so even though you have to keep the ipad on, you can use it as a sort of control panel instead of leaving it empty

Like an option to only display on Screen 2. Same as Windows.

@TerrenRule will you be revisiting this with iPadOS 17 where stage manager? It has more precise sizing options and stage manager seems WAY more pleasant.

Got an M1 ipad air on friday. So far I used my studio display with a macbook pro M1 pro yet now I want to try this out lol
My only worry is that iPads seem to go "obsolete" quicker than a computer. And with the price of an M1 and M2 MacMini, there's a really affordable way to use an iPad as a laptop and purchase a great desktop, which is what I've done. I even use my iPad for work calls so I could store my work laptop out of view and didn't need a camera.
I was ipad-only for 6 years. It met all of my needs. I only recently bought a m2 macbook air for some specific use cases, but the ipad is awesome and more fun to use. ESPECIALLY with a trackpad. The gestures are so intuitive and make navigating a breeze. If I had an M1 ipad I might have not got the laptop, especially with the new update coming where stage manager apps can be resized to whatever size you want
Same to me. I bough a MacBook too, now it is sleeping because the iPad is more fun and you don’t waste time.
With Final Cut Pro coming to iPad, this setup may actually have a point for some people!

Many monitors have an audio out 3.5 mm jack. That is usually connected to the Display Port and HDMI sound output. You can feed that in to a powered speaker. Just make sure you max out the volume on the monitor settings.
It’s crazy I was attempting this about 4 years ago. The lack of full screen was just a bummer. I have a 27 in monitor and the iPad crop killed the experience. With the new additions of type c support and the updates to the files app along with this I can see this truly being a thing!

Great video man. As a samsung user its very very nice to see some real competition in the tablet pc space. I wish samsung would copy the "move app to screen/ipad" feature because you literally have to restart the app. I tried swapping to an ipad only for work (as a challenge) but it just can't do the things I need as a software dev (better sql apps, terminal support/management, proper file management (beyond just media/doc files), and other little things. I'm really hoping Apple and Samsung will start pushing each other to do the best for us!
I have a Sonos system in my house - and Spotify easily links to my house system and plays to them while in full screen mode. No problems using the iPad as. My main device and playing music on external speakers..
While I love my iPad & can use it for about 90% of what I do, there's a few main things in my workflow the iPad can't do. Overall, this is a great tutorial
My ipad mini 6 has an external display functiom but without the stage manager. So it basically only mirrors the ipads screen. But mouse, keyboard and other accessories work as well.

Good video. Could you do a video on what you can not do with the ipad pro? That would be very interesting, instead of what you can do?
Anyone using this setup you can use the HomePod mini speakers by going into the music app switching it to HomePod as main speaker for audio and everything else will work as well such as video and anything you watch with safari or apps.

NYrs eve 2023 we have M2 powered devices so StageMgr should b nicer now. As a retired gtr-teacher used 2 write lots of GtrPro files. Can't do that on iPad / is read only & poorly @ that. I know I know, there're other notation editor apps out there & one of them's compatible + GtrPro. Apart from that, I'm not a pro/business user & am determined 2 streamline 2 a phone & tablet only system .. no "desktop". (Maybe, just maybe, it might b worth converting my old MacMini into personal server .. lack of on-board SSD might b issue). Have a Samsung smart TV which was intended as external (4K) monitor .. i just keep it off-line. What fun; a NYrs project build!
Stage manager is only on the M powered chips. External display IS supported on all iPads. I know because I have an iPad Air 4.

Go with the Mac Mini M2...I tried the iPad pro M2 set up but it's not ideal or close to a proper desktop experience...

I use an iPad Air 5 as my ONLY “computer”, so I have an external monitor. And I would like to share something. I always see people talking about “stage manager”. You don’t need stage manager to use it. I might make a video showing it, but I am no UA-camr.
I love the way stage manager handles windows resizing on iPad. I wish I had it on my Macbook!

@@ivindholm2031 there's a mac app i use called Rectangle that lets me snap a window to a preset (left/right halves, thirds, two thirds, or top/bottom left/right quarter, etc etc)
After i learned some of the keyboard shortcuts, I'd say that Rectangle is the best window manager, better than what ive used on any other OS (Windows, linux fedora, ipad)

I only need my IPAD PRO for my daily work despite owning a Mac Air. And use Jump desktop to tap on my Mac or Windows for more intensive work.
For me almost everytime i open any app on external screen it freeze for about 30 seconds. It s frustrating. And in some cases the keyboard just refuses to work. And on the audio issue, you can choose the audio output from control center

Tell me please, for a person with very poor eyesight, 27 inch monitor with what resolution is better to buy so that the elements displayed on it through the iPad Pro M1 were as large as possible? FullHD, 2K or 4K? I know that on the iPad you can select the magnification of screen elements, but I do not know which of these three resolutions of the monitor will be the largest elements? thats basically what i did in 2003 when everything other than the hdd in my fujitsu laptop stopped working - i was using vga monitor + ps2 mouse and keyboard + pcie cd drive

For professionals, you are right they probably need a MacBook. But I believe I can still edit pretty good videos with lumefusion probably spelled that wrong? iPads still have pretty good apps for that a long with photo editing apps too.

Idk if it's my monitor or what but my ipad doesn't charge or maintain charge when connected. It's my biggest issue right now and Idk how to fix or approach that. I'm connected to a BenQ EX2780Q monitor via USB-C.

Hi! Thank you for the video! Actually, just one stupid thing is preventing me from buying M-based iPad for desktop setup: audio is routed to display output when you have external display connected. Why would you have bluetooth headphones connected but your audio goes somewhere else?
Now that we have Final Cut and Logic on iPad. Does iPad Only make this iPad set up better?

I set up my partner with iPad desktop recently.
The lack of traditional window snapping is the only thing that’s holding back the concept for me. The iPad itself allows for flush split screen but not for the external display? I can’t understand that design premise. Stage manager is cool, but not consistent with any other desktop user experience.

Professional Illustrator here and I’ve migrated to an iPad only display like the one you have. It’s not 100% flawless but I get a lot more productivity done than I did on my PC. Great video!
