that's normal in the drone business. you can buy the p4 and in less then 4-5months there will be a new and better one released. I mean, the release of the P3 is not more then 10months ago... this drone are coming out faster then smartphones
+Tyler Lyssy dw man i did the same thing but yes the p4 has got longer battery life and a tracking system but the p3 pro basically does everything else . for the p3pro:
1. get numerous batteries( i have got three and thats more than enough(bout 1hr and 10 mins)
2.i dont see any need for the p4 to have a more stable gimbal, the one on my p3pro works so well.
and plus give it a year and dji will probs add the tracking thing as a firmware update for the p3 series.
im just relived they didnt put a better camera on it, thats the only thing that would have pissed me off

I recently got a DJI Phantom 4, and holy cow is it fun to play with, take awesome scenery videos with, and fly around in some places where you wouldn't usually be. Using this with family is fun! I went to the park with my uncle and we had a blast. Nice review!

Hey guys, thanks for the video. So you know, I just purchased a phantom 4 as my first drone. I am a film maker and am making a documentary from san diego to miami for 4 months. I bought this drone for SO many reasons, but mostly for all of it's automation. The reason I never bought a drone is because I knew I would crash it. Even though it isn't fully going to keep me from that, I am excited to use all of the automated flight paths so I can closely control the camera for my shots. This thing looks perfect. I will also be filming with the DJI Osmo, Sony RX100m4, GoProHero4, Nikon D800 and Nikon D4 ... and I am sure a few iPhone shots will make it in the mix as well.
Can't wait to get my droneydrone!

Wow! I have been a Rc airplane pilot since I was a little boy. I've wanted one of these drones since I first saw them. But now I can se my self flying one of theses. The Phantome 4 looks awesome!
In my opinion, it's an unfinished/rushed through product. Obstacle avoidance should be 360 degrees. Heck, even the design looks unfinished. Needed more work. Maybe they'll get it right next year...

+sheepcute I think >80% of the obstacles are in the forward direction in practical scenarios. Of course, 360 degrees will be better. The 360 degrees may be a build-in function of Inspire 2 most probably.

They did say later it had some difficulty holding a lock on people in varying light conditions,maybe that was what happened there?

what I would love to see is it tracking one person running, then have someone else run into the shot then run in between the subject and the drone and see how it handles it

Question: I want to fly in a heavily wooded area. Can the RTH feature be programmed to maintain a minimum altitude so it doesn't fly into the treetops on the way home?

+WildAndLiving wont be doing much flying over water, - unless I can teach it to troll - but "home" is surrounded by trees and a power line. If I can set the minimum RTH altitude at say .. 65 feet - I will have plenty of room to clear the trees and wires.

The Phantom 6 is already designed and ready for market. Companies slowly release "newer watered down versions" to guarantee future profits. I can guarantee that a DJI Phantom with sensors ALL AROUND that can avoid all obstacles in all directions is designed and planned and simply not released for many generations.
Intel and Nvidia have also famously been known to practice this company model :(
So us, the consumers, are really always waiting for new emerging companies or other "rebel" companies to release something so revolutionary that the big giant companies are forced to come out with serious upgrades on their new releases.
A good example of this is how BlackMagicTechnologies (makers of the RED cameras) recently launched a full featured NLE (aka. video editing program) for FREE, with their Davinci Resolve 12.5.
This will force the giant NLE companies like Adobe, Apple, Sony, and Avid to really step up their game too give the consumers reasons to still choose their paid software. Or they can also roll out their current products for free, but somehow I doubt they will :P

They are only releasing one version of the phantom 4 instead of the three versions of phantom 3.

I am so stoked to own one of these drones. I also have re-built a few of them..I even re-build the gimbals. I know every screw and part and piece in these drones. Some of the calibration procedures are kind of tricky to get dialed. If you have Apple computers it should be a lot easier to do the calibration's. Super huge fan of these amazing Drones.

Awesome news. My concerns are wether the automatic obstacle dodging feature is enabled while manually flying it or it is only when it is tracking a subject or automatically returning home. It would be cool if it was an always-on feature to help you out wether you lose controls, the wind is too strong or for whatever reason it's about to crash into something. Like if you're accidentally flying it toward a tree it should automatically brake and hover in front of it until you take control again. With that being said, these are some amazing new advancements for the Phantom. Just hope that the 400-feet software altitude limitation can be removed when using it outside the US.
The following feature seemed amazing, until I saw how easily it lost track of you in an open field with absolutely nothing in it while you were still in the frame.
Obviously it would work better at higher altitudes because the camera doesn't have to move as much but the person would be smaller therefore harder to track but still pretty good if your walking slowly

Great first review! I own the Phantom 3 and really like the new features of the Phantom 4. However, I would guess that after one typical crash one or more of those sensors will be fried (too much to go wrong). Also the new identification follow me mode is limited in it's uses (most be only 1 moving object in view & correct lighting). Other problem is flight time. Certainly in Normal mode with reduced speed one would get 28 mins, but in Sport mode I'm guessing 8 mins less. I like the obstacal avoidance BUT I like to fly between objects and I would think I'd have to turn it off to accomplish this smoothly. In your next video can you also compare the P4 designed gimbal to that of the P3 for range of movement and smoothness of video. Thanks.

YES!!!!!! finally You Answer the question about crashing on the sides or behind.. Yup Getting the TYPHOON H They have sensors on all sides 6 Props, Follow Mode (while dodging obstacles) & landing gear that lets you move camera in 360 degrees like an inspire 1. PEACE
Finally someone who is realising that
+jose Madera : The H does not have sensors on all 6 sides. They have them on the front only, BUT the Intel version works 180 degrees and 45 up/down. The sensors on the bottom are motion flow camera for stable non-gps flight.
The Multi-Rotar that had real sense on 6 slides was from Ascending technologies, and its not cheap, if they let you buy one!
If only they could suppress the rotor noise when its filming so you could do the David Attenborough style narration as it tracks you.

Great review, very thorough, and very timely as I just found out about this new model a few days ago. Thank Norm! I can always rely on you for an insightful discussion about the subject. Got my P3Pro less than two months ago and I'm still learning, so no upgrade for me. Yet.
As a filmmaker I will stick to the P3P. There is no killer argument for the camera to buy it, it's just little bit better. (Not like the jump from P2V+ to P3P).
I would have liked much higher bitrate, so that video get better quality. Also 4K with 50 fps would have been great. So let's wait until next year.
I think they want to put something on the market before the Lilly comes out.

I am a happy owner of a Phantom 3 Pro, and I will only upgrade when I see weather resistance added. Obstacle stuff is nice, although I fly mine backwards facing me all the time, so need those cameras on the rear too. 4K/60p is a must, 1080/120p is very handy for slo-mo, as long as the image quality isn't too mushy.
DJI, please make a Phantom 5 with 4K/60p and able to fly in the rain/snow/-20C and you have my money!

I'm sticking with the P3S for a while. The follow feature seems pretty lame at best and the DJI employee avoided the question about speed following, and based upon what I saw, it doesn't look very good. Crash avoidance doesn't look to be all that great either. Part of the fun for me is actually piloting the P3 and filming.

This was nice! A great look on the device, good questions and even highlighting som issues. I watched The Verges video on Phantom 4 and I couldn't tell the difference between DJI's PR people and the journalist....

Good review, my dream is to someday own a quadcopter, but for now I simply can't afford one.
Every new edition gets better and better, watching review videos like this one kinda makes you crave to own one, that's for sure.
However, not yet. Still far too expensive.
But someday, one day, for sure.
You can see props on 4:54 when DJI said the motors were placed higher so it was impossible to ruin shots because of visible propellers LOL
So basically at 45 mph straight in to a wall the avoidance will slow it down enough that it breaks in to 100 peices then 1000 peices. That's great to know. That speed is disaster waiting to happen. If you want a racing drone buy a racing drone. If you want a video drone buy a video drone. Show me one amazing drone footage video that shows a drone hauling ass. They are always nice and slow. Camera upgrade is a bit better but was hoping for more. We just saw how well that tracking works. It was smooth as hell when it worked. It will only get better over time. But was real glitchy. Obstacle avoidance is so far from reliable and I can asure you it will NOT save your P4 from power lines and tree branches or anything at 45 mph. Would have liked to have seen then all over. Front, back, sides, top and bottom but hey ya gotta start somewhere. And it's great that dji is working on this technology. Battery life is getting a little better which is a good thing. But remember folks. Those of you that have bought dji in the past remember just how many of the cool features where not working yet when they received their drones. And how many months did it take for them to actually get it to work properly. Also remember how many updates it has gone through over the period to get all these features to be compatible across all mobile devices. It's still a bit of a mess. But they are always moving forward. I am just saying don't be that guy that rushes out to buy the next big thing and then be pissed at dji when you crash the P4 because you didn't know any better. But as Apple sheep are they have the money and could care less. Enjoy your P4s and be sure to share your experience with the smart folks standing by. Thanks dji for doing what you do.

Yeah that is what I thought would be the case. The tracking and the collision avoidance are good features until they don't work. can you imagine the person who buys one of these because of all the highly touted features and goes mountain biking only to turn around and find his quad had attention deficit disorder? Or went on a hike through the woods to find it didn't miss the tree. All this stuff is great but we still need a few years of development to get it right. All that being said, I'm glad that DJI and YUNEEC are brining us this technology. Wonder where we will be with it in 5 more years.Thanks for the review. I was thinking of getting one but seeing how easily it looses tracking, I'll wait and see where the quads fall, I mean "where the cards fall".
The max altitude is limited to 500m!!! so happy i know this before i just played out!

The Active Track feature is great, but a lot of third party apps are incorporating this feature. The Phantom 3 can now do the same thing.
