We've been using this setup to map the silt buildup in a bay and river. I'm amazed at the 3D capabilities! Primarily we're taking just 2D maps, but the 3D ended up being a bonus. I'm boggled!
I worked for a company that did high-res 3D mapping for large commercial and DoD customers, using a manned plane, very expensive cameras, and a massive Linux cluster to crunch the pixels and geometry. My work concerned that last part. Fun stuff for math and imaging geeks! It's amazing how ordinary folk can get their hands on and use things that required security clearances several years ago. Of course, the big boys with big budgets have also moved ahead, and aren't going to say exactly what they're capable of.
Holy shit. My mind is blow with the rapid increase in drone tech. Yesterday it was the DJI Mavic with long flight time and range, nearly pocket sized, incredibly stable 4k camera, gesture recognition, fantastic flight stability, precision location tracking via multiple satellites, and more. Today it's incredibly easy autonomous 3D mapping via 3rd party app, with much higher resolution for the map just a small step away. Adding in multiple flight patterns to auto circle targets at various heights during the mapping is a simple add-on that eliminates having to do a manual flight to improve the mapping. I'm actually surprised it isn't included in the software already. It was only a few years ago that auto-return was the cutting edge, which my drone didn't have and flew away from me in the wind. :) I came here from the consumer camera is dead vid. Now helicopter rentals for movie footage and aerial surveying is dead - has been in the process of dying for a couple of years now. But now you won't have to hire a pro pilot to fly your drone for you movie footage. This will soon bleed into the consumer photograph market for spectacular panoramic vista photos from any point desired. Portable camera tech is blowing up so DOF, shutter speed, and exposure will enter these cameras quickly, if not from the manufacturer then from 3rd party apps. Not sure if you got the perfect shot of a falcon flying, just track it for a 100 m (or 500 m) and shoot a dozen photos -- and pre-programm the camera to shoot with a variety of setings for f stops and exposure settings. Why buy a $4k 300mm lens when you can shoot photos as close as you want - limited by scaring the target when you can buy a drone for $1500 that does that and much, much more. ;) These changes are like going from a flip phone to a smart phone. It's game changing. I don't know if I'm getting old, but I'm truly stunned.
this technology was before phantoms, same technic (camera + waypoints + gps locations\altitude info+distrosion), the main difference is ine the process, now you just uploading, times ago - you must check whole process by yourself). Anyway, great thing.
Didn't know much about photogrammetry until recently but it seems like you can take pictures with any camera of a certain object and with a software like "Reality Capture" or "Agisoft Photoscan" you stitch the pictures together and get a 3d model just like the one you showed in this video. The big advantage is that you can get a much better result buy doing it yourself and you can export the model and use it in any 3d software you want. Not sure how accurate is the model but i intend to use it for architectural surveys.
Marian Sdraila It's good for vegetation and natural objects and complex man made objects. For games it needs to be optimized a LOT because of the excessive amount of polygons. It's mostly accurate for the dimensions, textures not so much.
Looks like the new Phantom Pro remote includes an integrated controller display. I'm assuming you couldn't use Drone Deploy on that??? And, it doesn't look like you can download additional software on the integrated display. Thoughts? Sorry... newbie here.
the more I learn about drone uses the more amazed I am, and the more I want to do it. thank you for mentioning the before you fly app, booked marked that app for future use (when I get my drone)
Can this also create 3d objects that can be used in photoshop?? This would be very intriguing to me. I do a bit of compositeing /desgin etc. in Photoshop and haveing realistic 3d objects would make this so much easier. No searching for the perfect stock image from the right angle with matching horizons and stuff. Still the DJI is ridiculously expensive. I may still be tempted to get a new lens or body for that kind of money. (Plus I would really like a higher res on those drone cameras).
Great software, though becomes $80 per month to use view or inspection utilities. I now use the app to gather the images and then use other more affordable software to do the photogrammetry and inspection functions. Drone deploy really need a hobbyist edition, I wouldn't mind paying.
This is pretty cool! But I'd be concerned about privacy issues. For instance, Within my fenced in back yard, I have my patio inside a white vinyl fence. I and mine like to sunbathe and soak in the hot tub. I think I have a reasonable expectation of privacy. And this will display us in 3D.
Sending a drone over now. Seriously, though, regular 2D photos show far more detail than these 3D models, so this shouldn't scare you more than regular drones.
Quick question ......If i add some extra images of a building to get good quality how to add the extra photos? just add them with the plan photos? if so what about the order of the extra photos added..... some help would be great thanks great video!
I miss the time that you had the pictures of drones but watched video. I have a picture I like you to look at that i took with my drone . will you have another one .just like you two to look at what i did ? thank you .
Instead of having to fly manually, can't you just tell Drone Deploy to fly over five times: once with the camera pointed down, once with the camera pointed 45 degrees up from north, once with the camera pointed 45 degrees up from south, once with the camera pointed 45 degrees up from east, and once with the camera pointed 45 degrees up from west? Or does Drone Deploy only point the camera down?
I haven't tried the app recently, but at the time, it only flew with the lens pointed down. Any sort of automatic flight would require it to take a lot of unnecessary pictures, unless it had the logic to figure out where taller objects were. Maybe soon!
Great vid! What if you have the controller that comes with the built in screen? Do you just hook up the controller to your computer with a USB cable and download it from there??
Can you export the 3D map? If so, is that feature available with every level of subscription? Or do I have to pick a specific service plan, like Enterprise? I see an Export button in the top left corner, when you go to your map, but want to make sure that means what I think it means.
Nice video. I run a 3d print shop. Can the image be converted to a 3d files to be printed off. So I could scan a customers building project and produce a scale model
Is it possible to use this in areas that are not in Cell coverage or mapped from Google earth? Im finding it difficult to make my flight path with no maps.
I keep getting the error that 'not enough waypoints defined'; have you ever experienced this? Also, I have a P3P do I need to be in F-mode or P-mode to start a mission? Thanks!
So if I switch to the DJI go app and then snap photos when I'm flying in DJI go app and load them with the drone deploy app it will use them seamlessly?
Tony why went you take off is the phantom 4 but then you use a footages of a phantom 2 that is not even carrying a camera. What happened at take off did you P4 got stuck on a tree or something???
Hi. Thanks for the video Tony. Can drone deploy export to DEM/DTM where it can be used on more of the engineering/landscaping softwares? Also, could u review other software such as: Agisoft Maps made easy Pix4d For a part time drone surveyor like me, drone deploy is just too unaffordable
Good video. Someone once told me before you start to make your run, take 1 photo with the drone on the ground pointed at the area. Your suggestion of taking extra pictures is great!! Drone deploy will automatically insert them in the correct space. Thanks!
Hi Tony :-) When you say flight manually in case you want to make a better job with different angles, 3 different altitudes orbit on a building which app are you meaning to use to make that...DJI go app or drone deploy app??? Thank you Marco from Italy?:-)
Holy-manoli, this is so cool! This looks SO satisfying! You're damn right, i'm going to spend countless hours pointlessly mapping everything with it.... if i had so much money to spend. Can you fly the drone around yourself while standing still and make a Tony model? For scientific purposes of Tony preservation. Thank you!
Can you then take the data and do some 3D printing? I'm thinking, make a 3D model of Cerro Gordo, and put a giant Robert in the middle, ruling over it all like a boss.
Tony. I found your page totally by accident. As I watched your videos (especially this one) I noticed that I recognized lots of your subject matter. Turns out, I live about a mile from you.
Love your drone videos :) Would be awesome if you could do a review for the xiaomi drone as it is supposed to be a good alternative to the dji drone :D
Remember that if any of you are planning to get any compensation for using a drone like this video o plan to do videos with it you need to comply with rule 107, before FAA knock at your door. (US Territory)

Wow, that's pretty cool.
Yeah, you gotta try it out (and say goodbye to a weekend while you pointlessly map everything you can)
I worked for a company that did high-res 3D mapping for large commercial and DoD customers, using a manned plane, very expensive cameras, and a massive Linux cluster to crunch the pixels and geometry. My work concerned that last part. Fun stuff for math and imaging geeks!

we've had this technology for a long time. they just integrated the feature into the DJI

The pricing of Drone Deploy is just absurd
That is spectacularly cool
Cool, so it's photogrammetry with a drone. I wonder how the quality stacks up against Reality Capture.

I think so--if you have the paid subscription you can export the models in various usable formats.
Tony & Chelsea Northrup what about the price?
Great software, though becomes $80 per month to use view or inspection utilities. I now use the app to gather the images and then use other more affordable software to do the photogrammetry and inspection functions. Drone deploy really need a hobbyist edition, I wouldn't mind paying.

You are the dude. King of content.

I miss the time that you had the pictures of drones but watched video. I have a picture I like you to look at that i took with my drone . will you have another one .just like you two to look at what i did ? thank you .
Can u show me clear about build again ? Should I flight for area. And next flight around the building ?
The problem is using diffrent more accurate programs like pix 4d takes crazy amounts of ram for large projects.
What's the size of those images, and what's a typical number, and what is the upper limit to that number?
Can we get elevation of landscapes? I mean can it do contour mapping?
If there are power lines nearby, will it hit them. Is the app just like the dji go app, in the sense of reliability
try to not fly over other ppls property **draws an area that is size of university**
Can i do it with the phantom 3 standard too?
yes you can :)
what about with the P4P +???
Great vid! What if you have the controller that comes with the built in screen? Do you just hook up the controller to your computer with a USB cable and download it from there??
Too bad the Autel X-Star Premium is not on the supported drones list. DroneDeploy is missing an opportunity by omitting the Autel drones.
Does Pix4D take into account the density of water and how it bends light in it's volumetric calculations?
While letting it move around a fixed perimeter how is the map visible before flight to set the path..
Please confirm?
Altizure is another good one Tony.
Hi, can I use mavic pro to do the same thing? How can I do it while the drone is flying and let it take photo automatically? Thanks
Thats cool, but what mapping software does it use? Say if you don't have internet/wifi on location. How to cache the maps?
"Call of Duty at my house?""What map?""My house?"
+HDredneck lol that was my first thought too! It's gonna happen; you'll be able to rampage your neighborhood.
+peter muiden how did you come out with 50% percent went the discount is only 14% can you plz explain that to me ????
HDredneck he's just a troll.
It's easier then the 'old' way... where you had to re-create stuff in a 3D editor (made countless Quake Arena levels this way :) )
Can I use mavic mini for this
Can you export the 3D map? If so, is that feature available with every level of subscription? Or do I have to pick a specific service plan, like Enterprise? I see an Export button in the top left corner, when you go to your map, but want to make sure that means what I think it means.
This just blew my mind. Simple.
How about safety of drone? I have phantom 4 and how front sensors work with this program?
Nice video. I run a 3d print shop. Can the image be converted to a 3d files to be printed off. So I could scan a customers building project and produce a scale model
Is it possible to use this in areas that are not in Cell coverage or mapped from Google earth? Im finding it difficult to make my flight path with no maps.
How does it handle moving things like swaying trees or moving cars?
I work as a programmer for a company that makes software that does exactly what you've shown here.
This is amazing for architecture
Hi Tony.. My drone won't take off I think because I have picture of a camera not a airplane in lower right in screen. Do you know why?? Thanks!
What position is the switch on the controller during the mapping process? Cool video.
Nice but isn't it an option for it to fly obliques on its own?
when using dronedeploy app, am I must connected to the internet?
Is there any other video about how to use it with DJI PHantom 4 Pro + remote ? Do I need to reinstall everything or ust download the app ?
Another great video Tony! What's the cost for drone deploy? I know the app is free but how much to upload and process the pics?
Some software that could do the same dronedeploy does without the need to upload hundreds of images to the internet?.
Can i hook up a scanse sweep to this and get some lidar data as well?
I keep getting the error that 'not enough waypoints defined'; have you ever experienced this? Also, I have a P3P do I need to be in F-mode or P-mode to start a mission? Thanks!
So if I switch to the DJI go app and then snap photos when I'm flying in DJI go app and load them with the drone deploy app it will use them seamlessly?
How accurate is it for elevation if i do survey for a village for sewer project?
Tony why went you take off is the phantom 4 but then you use a footages of a phantom 2 that is not even carrying a camera. What happened at take off did you P4 got stuck on a tree or something???
Hi. Thanks for the video Tony.
Can drone deploy export to DEM/DTM where it can be used on more of the engineering/landscaping softwares?
Also, could u review other software such as:
Agisoft
Maps made easy
Pix4d
For a part time drone surveyor like me, drone deploy is just too unaffordable
That's the coolest thing I've seen in quite a while. Makes me want to get a drone.
You can use the DJI Go app for that.
We have tried taking different angles in dronedeply will it take both the angles??? If I uploaded both angles
Does it benefit to have a powerful CPU and GPU when using these 3D mapping softwares?
I'm sure tools like this will be extremely useful for game development, it is not already the case.
Wonderful, thank you. Will this work with the new Mavic Mini?
This is probably the future of gaming
Super cool! Thank you. As always your nerdness shines like a beacon.
I've tried Drone Deploy but wasn't a fan. The resolution is pretty horrible in free mode, still not all that great with a paid subscription.
I love this video. can't wait to try this out real soon. Using this app is free?
yeah
Holy-manoli, this is so cool! This looks SO satisfying! You're damn right, i'm going to spend countless hours pointlessly mapping everything with it.... if i had so much money to spend.
Can you fly the drone around yourself while standing still and make a Tony model? For scientific purposes of Tony preservation.

Have you guys ever used Maps Made Easy?
Can you then take the data and do some 3D printing? I'm thinking, make a 3D model of Cerro Gordo, and put a giant Robert in the middle, ruling over it all like a boss.
LOL! Yes, you can do exactly that, and I wish I'd had this in Cerro Gordo--you could quickly map the whole mountain.
How do you send that data to a 3D printer?
Just amazing video! Quick question: does the Dronedeploy manage the gimbal when shooting photos like tilt the camera down for mapping?
how come there are no reviews on the app in the app store?/
How deep under the water can this system map?
it only works with phantom 4 or does it work with other phantom versions?
How far can i send a drone with the GPS coordinate already configured
Amazing tool. BTW the place is beautiful where is it? thanks.
In what format does the 3d model export the app? And the height mode?
Say, can you do 3d mapping with the Mavic?
Awesome Vid, thanks for putting this together. BTW, I used your FAA vid to study for the my FAA cert. Best recourse to learn the basics quick!!!
Very nice still more information may be given
Tony. I found your page totally by accident. As I watched your videos (especially this one) I noticed that I recognized lots of your subject matter. Turns out, I live about a mile from you.
swimming party at the northrups?
What are the export options for the 3D models you make?
What's a good drone just to take a air pictures?
Technology has peaked
love the video. thanks you for sharing.
I have a 360°x235° camera, does your SW support it?
Hi Tony, my phantom 4 pro+ doesnt connect to this app. Can you or anyone solv this issue? Thanks in advance
el monitor de la emisora que modelo de samsung es??
Can I use this also on a DJI Phantom Vision 2+?
can it's work in phantom 3 standard?
yes :)
Nice video! Thanks for the information!
Now i gotta buy one of these!
Tony, THAT WAS FREAKIN' SWEEEEET!! Thank you, cool dude!!
What are some uses of 3D models? Why not just take video?
Love your drone videos :)
Would be awesome if you could do a review for the xiaomi drone as it is supposed to be a good alternative to the dji drone :D
a solution for flight simulator urban area scenery creation. as an x-plane 11 user.
Remember that if any of you are planning to get any compensation for using a drone like this video o plan to do videos with it you need to comply with rule 107, before FAA knock at your door. (US Territory)
What a world! We can do almost anything now.
Can you use the dronedeploy app whit dji phantom 3 standard?
