The Phantom 4 Pro V2.0 also has The OcuSync 2.0 HD transmission system. Ive gotten over 20,000 feet away on mine, witch is roughly 4miles so it is achievable great video.
They're both using Ocusync 2.0 - if anything (and providing you get your antenna orientations correct) the P4P has a hard limit of 17.9km videio transmission whereas the Air 2 is limited to 11km so at least in theory the P4P could be pushed much further. Throw in the P4P's more robust powetrain and its more likley to make it home in stronger wind conditions vs the AIr 2. Still both great little quads, cant go wrong with either!
Awesome video Ken. And thank you for having a spotter and showing the RIGHT way to do a range test. There’s another UA-camr that doesn’t do that. He sets a bad example. Love that you use spotters in other videos too. And I’ve also seen the other video demonstrating how to go under a bridge. That’s a good one too.
Awesome, I look forward to my next distance test. I need to find a really calm day. The first test I did was at the beach and it was pretty windy, so I only flew 17,000 ft before the drone said it needed to return because f battery level. But my reception was still perfect, it was cool I flew straight down the surf meeting the sand at about 15 ft high for over 3 miles and I recorded it. I love my Air 2, it’s not overrated, it’s really a capable drone.
Those intelligent flight batteries drop down to around 55% or so if you fully charged them but say leave them sit in your storage bag to 2 days or so before you fly again those batteries self deplete. Some people do not realize this but it is a failsafe and should make the batteries last longer.
I am currently using the DJI mini 2 and I have noticed on range testing that i got better distances when using the compass located in the corner of the map screen. If I am facing the east and flying out around 1000 feet and make a turn with the drone and my controller is still facing the same direction I will lose signal. But when using my compass I can see the direction of the drone and it allows me to point my antenna in the same direction as the drone which will allow me to get a better signal and go further. It also helps to fly in an area where their is little or no interference such as wifi or radio or tv towers. Actually it’s hard to find an area like that unless you are in the dessert or somewhere. But if you can find an area just open land that is a couple miles long you will have better results. Personally for me I live in the mountains of West Virginia and I can’t find any area that is open like that so just flying in an area with interference I usually lose signal around 6 to 8000 feet also. But using the compass really helped me point my antenna towards my drone and it did increase my range. I have enjoyed watching your videos. Keep flying and have a great day.
Ken I appreciate that you had multiple VOs on this. I made an earlier comment without watching the whole video first. My bad. Thanks Ken keep up the good work.

So if my line of sight is 3 miles I can't go father than that? I don't get why they can't count the video as 'observer'. Really limits distance. What's seeing it from the ground going to do compared to seeing through the crystal clear pov gimbal
It let's you see anything around your drone that you could hit. If you could only go forwards then your thought process would be sound. But what good does looking forward do when going left right or backwards? And... line of sight is the distance you can visually see your drone. Even with the strobes, 3 miles is a real stretch.
Yea, I agree. You have to be really careful flying out of sight. I do it pretty often but I make sure I’m well above the tallest object in the area. I have to hand it to the guy that can see his drone 3 miles away? I’d estimate I can only see mine at about 1/2 to 3/4 of a mile but, I’m 62 and my sight certainly isn’t what it was when I was younger. Still I’m not sure the best eyes can see a drone this size 3 miles away. Maybe, and good for you if you can.
You’re facing the antennas the wrong way using the air 2 ...it was only like 500ft in the air and yet u were facing the antennas almost straight up.. could of gone a lot farther dispite losing LOS, I bet it would of gone double what you did,
How come at the bottom of your screen it shows antennas for controller were pointing opposite direction of your drone . Drone was never in front of a Controller. antenna according to the screen, am I reading that wrong?
In fact Joseph P. Kennedy Jr. died during his suicide mission. The plane he was in was wired to the hilt with explosives, he was to bail out and then the plane would be piloted remotely and steered into a German munitions factory, it went badly. JFK had to step in and be groomed to be the first Irish Catholic president.
Love these videos and the Ken Heron humor. Flying around my place sucks. So many airports and military bases and busy roads. I try and follow all the rules.
@@KenHeron Wow, I never thought that after all the years of planning, funding, acquiring right of ways, and getting that far into it, that a project could just be left unfinished. It does make for a good place to fly.
Guys, to get the best range you need the antenna pointed perpendicular to the drone- so in this case the phone holder rails should be pointing towards the drone. I fly CE mode and get range beyond 7km (about 4.5miles)... thats even more than dji claim for CE mode.
Hi Ken. Interesting comparison, thanks for sharing. As a matter of interest, when you flew under the plane wing and close to the wheel, were you “tyred”? I guess you have to tread carefully when doing something like that! Take care and catch you later. Peter
OK, I can vouch for the 15,000 feet - I actually went just over 17,000 at the Oregon Coast just 4 weeks ago. My Mavic Air 2 still had a good signal when the safety system kicked in and decided it needed to turn and start home to insure there was adequate battery to get there. Weird, it quit at about 17,000 ft but still showed 60% battery level. I still had 35% power when it returned home. I’m thinking the drone was gauging the power requirement based on the initial flight north along the surf, where it was flying against a pretty steady southern wind. Not sure. Bottom line this is my 3rd Drone and it is awesome - My first drone was a Parrot Beebop 2, then had the Parrot Anafi, both were great in there own right and for their respective cost. Parrot makes some really good drones also and at pretty reasonable prices. But I gotta say, the DJI Mavic Air 2 is at another level. Great drone design, very durable, great distance, great reception, great camera, great flexibility, great software. It’s just plain fun to fly and goof around with. It makes a 62 year old man like me feel like a kid again. Which I sure noticed was the case with these two fellas. Good job guys I enjoyed the video. Thanks
My air 2 went about 6 km with no range problems. I think I could have pushed it farther but did not do so. You didn’t point the the remote towards the drone and the drone was at low altitude so that might have been problem
I live in Los Angeles which is a very city like area. I have the DJI Mini 2, however, I'm afraid to fly it long distances due to the fact I live in the midst of a city with power lines and buildings everywhere, thus I don't want to loose sight and connection with my drone. Does this drone do well on long distant flights in a busy city like area?
In the city u get alot of wifi interference so u can't fly to far. And you are only allowed to go a few hundred feet with limits . So sucks trying to get the videos u really want. But the mini 2 is great for beginners
@Ken Heron Ken, Even though the Phantom 4 Pro V2.0 was originally released with the first version of Occusync through updates it was upgraded to Occusync 2. I am sure you have updated since so you should be running Occusync 2 also! Nice Test Bro!
Now two years later, you can get the Air 2 fly more combo for under $800. Defiantly not the latest, greatest technology, but a damn fine drone nonetheless.
Hey ken I know this is off topic but the range of the mini 3 pro is literally less than one third of the range of the phantom or the mavic air 2, you got any solutions so the mini 3 can get that far, even top the distance
That was fun. Thanks. Yesterday, I was filming a bridge and ended up dumping my Mavic Mini into the stream. Thank goodness they are cheap. I looked at the Air2 for a replacement, but it is a lot of cash to lose. Perhaps, I need to be more careful. I have a second Mavic Mini already so it is not the end of my flying. I will decide in the next couple of days on upgrading or replacing. Good fun all around. TTYL...
Id suggest robb at thunderdrones in daluth Georgia, he's my super geek that fixes anything, and reasonable. You have to crash to find the limits sometimes.
Blame the laws of physics. Trees attenuate the signal, unless you massively increase transmitted power that problem will always be with you, and drones don't have that option open to them.
Our flight crew has already managed with Phantom P4 2.0 to reach a point at 6800 meters, totaling 13,600. flight mtrs. I took the risk myself and went to 5800. mtrs without problems. São Paulo Brazil
Range changes with the amount of obstacles in the way of the drone, wifi signals, and other types of interference. Just to clarify, the range they refer to here is transmitter range not battery range, the Mini 2 can fly up to 10 km away in perfect conditions and if it's battery lasts that long, however, it most likely doesn't have the battery for that in the real world
That 10 k range is under perfect conditions. It's unlikely to get that far but who needs to fly that far away? You can't legally do it by yourself anyways
u both make it quite fun to test the range...occusync rocks!! owning a Mavic Mini and soon will have MA2 ....This is really impressive. take care Ken n fren...keep rockin'
Bravo mate, I get almost 2 miles in SoCal with my Spark, wind is no issue if ya fly smart, the mini doesn’t hold a candle, the 2 ain’t worth it until price drops dramatically
@@bigeyetuna6228 I have a Spark. It doesn't stand much chance of being flown again. The Spark is a selfie drone. If I want to fly a small drone I use the Mini. If I want a proper drone I use the Mavic Pro or the Air 2. The last thing the Spark had going for it was the lights for night flying but the Air 2 beats it on that score. The Spark isn't being made any longer, it has no selling point. I might use the Spark for stunts and autonomous flights with Litchi. Maybe for VR FPV with Litchi too. Although the Spark is cute that's little consolation for limited range and poor endurance.
hey ken great video, ive been wanting the air 2 but with the lost of court battle agaist autel ive heard that they no longer ship in the U.S .does this apply to the air 2 and can we get more props for the air .or should i order one now
I would love to see you guys fly this same route and do a range test of the original Mavic Pro, which I think was the bird that introduced the Occusync system(?) not sure about the facts. But as far as myself, I'm a very conservative shopper and so far, have refused to buy any other Mavic since buying the original... No Mavic 2, No Zoom, No AIR (yet!!) I'm really tempted to buy the Mavic Air2, very impressive drone. Thanks guys!!!
Hey Ken! I've been following you for a few years now, even remember when you got in an accident and had your phantom in its heavy duty case and it survived without a scratch! ... back to the point, you've really inspired me along the way, I've had some cheaper drones to learn and mimic your stick movements to make the drone move smoothly. Ive most recently got myself a mavic mini and have been gaining some traction through Facebook and Instagram but from one droner to the other is there any advice I could get from you in terms of starting a drone buisness or even a channel
Great video! You guys made this very entertaining and fun to watch. Thumbs up for the *Electric Boogaloo* statement! Surprise that you even know of it..lol
I like how most think that more battery would have changed the range by some galaxies. The mavic has punny antennas just like the ones who believe in it.
@@KenHeron ,class guy you ken, never fail to bring a smile , great content as always pal, . I have the phantom 4 ,, not a great fan of mavic, but hey each to their own , be well ken :)
Patrick Hofeld I have never met anyone stupid enough to get fined by the FAA for anything drone related. Stay out of no-fly zones, and be careful, and you’ll be fine. Do you honestly think they have FAA employees watching live satellite feeds seeing if a drone operator temporarily lets their drone out of sight? Get real.
@@ThunderfallFilms you miss the whole point. If you are flying for yourself, maybe no risk, but it would not be wise to document in a publicly available video your infringement of drone laws. Good luck defending yourself in court. These guys do it by the book because this video is evidence.

I think you need to point the top of the antenna towards the drone.looks like a patch type antenna..
My spark goes 3 miles and that’s in Australia without fcc power?
Bravo mate, I get almost 2 miles in SoCal with my Spark, wind is no issue if ya fly smart, the mini doesn’t hold a candle, the 2 ain’t worth it until price drops dramatically
Cheers
I just sold my mini and I’ve ordered an Air 2. I want to see six miles👍
👍👌 ✌️, Let er rip!!!
Although the Spark is cute that's little consolation for limited range and poor endurance.
hey ken great video, ive been wanting the air 2 but with the lost of court battle agaist autel ive heard that they no longer ship in the U.S .does this apply to the air 2 and can we get more props for the air .or should i order one now
That's a bunch of BS.
You can still buy them.
I LOVE my Air 2. I've had it since launch and this drone has been my favorite so far.
Thanks Matt!
This might help you:

That new Mavic Air 2 is a great drone, and I'm not surprised it won the range test. I'd go ahead order one.
Wow cool, but these paths you are flying along, are future highways?
Well the first test was not proper 54 % and you not pointing the transmitter at drone 🙄
The transmitter was pointed at sky, not at drone... :(
Great video! You guys made this very entertaining and fun to watch. Thumbs up for the *Electric Boogaloo* statement! Surprise that you even know of it..lol
I like how most think that more battery would have changed the range by some galaxies. The mavic has punny antennas just like the ones who believe in it.
Thanks for that guys, that was awesome
You bet!
I think those two are really good friends..
I've not had the privilege of meeting ken but he is a great guy , awesome vid ken , waving a hand from the uk, you guys are well , much love fella .
Hello to you my friend!👋
@@KenHeron ,class guy you ken, never fail to bring a smile , great content as always pal, . I have the phantom 4 ,, not a great fan of mavic, but hey each to their own , be well ken :)
I love how obsessed you guys are at keeping it in sight, not going over cars, etc. you realize like nobody actually cares about that right?
You... are an idiot.
Ken Heron no, I’m just not delusionally paranoid or a terrible pilot.
@@ThunderfallFilms Have fun with those FAA fines pal
Why is the locator at the center bottom showing the drone as being both behind you and pointing away from you? it should be the exact opposite.
But i did 6.5 kilometres with the Mavic air 2
Great video Ken. Damn DJI for making new better drones, and making us wanting to buy them!!!
Indeed!
in the first attempt, the drone disconnected because it was too low above the ground - I think
Ken do DJI batteries random die after two years even if not used much?
They can, yes.
Ken amazing video this shows that our P4p still on top to compete 👍
Heck yeah!
I love your videos but I got to ask what is the deal with the roads are they just not completed yet
The Mavic air 2 did not randomly disconnect, it was your phone disconcerting from the controller.
*connecting
Which one to buy? What a KENundrum.
Excited to buy mavic air 2 this december also this december will be 1st anniversary with my mavic mini 😊😊😊😊
I was hoping you were going to try both with your new range extenders
We ran out of spotters.
I have the Phantoms ,the Inspire, but my Mavic Air 2 is just a beauty and a beast.
Gotta love that Phantom! Thank You Ken for another entertaining and informative video.👍👍 You REALLY GOTTA LOVE the Air 2!!
Not sure why this video is so enjoyable but I’ve watched it a few times now lol.
Bruh
Forget the flip-to stop method, it's a safety feature, not for regular use!
Correct.
They disconnected because the forest is between you and the drones dude. They need a direct line of sight. Sure it works better if you fly higher...surprise. Also I dont know ehy you compare 54% battery vs. nearly 100%...makes no sense.
They were having fun they redid it at the end…
Because his favorite drone is the phantom 4 so he thought he could make it look better than mavic air 2 but it still beat the phantom
