- Join Kevin as he sits down with fellow character actor John C. McGinley (Scrubs, Platoon). John chats about his beginnings in New York theater leading to memorable performances on both the small and big screen.
John C is an amazing actor. I celebrate the guy's entire catalogue.
I see what ya did there.
Haha..his place in office space was great
LMAO!!
I just discovered this podcast. It’s amazing. I can’t believe he’s not doing it anymore.
And here I am, 6 years after this has been posted, absolutely AMAZED at how spot on his John Malkovich impression was. Hahahaha I love it.
I met this man last year in an elevator. What a presence. Good man. I was ecstatic but had to be cool. Having grown up watching his work I was very happy to at least get to say hello.
One of my all time favs. He does not fail.
I love McGinley! I have never seen him do a bad job, even in tiny roles.
I remember when he was a go to henchman, he has had varied career that is for sure.
Seven!
My favourite was when he was in Highlander 2, trying to negotiate with a bloodthirsty psychopath like any good yuppie
He specializes in taking a character that's nothing on the page, and making it a memorable role that suggests real substance behind the scenes.
Rare interview indeed. John is awesome. What a great program this was.
Love this guy in Point Break 😂 , he’s got so many great roles tho it’s hard to pick a favorite. Honorable mention Wild Hogs
J.C.M., an amazing storyteller and actor. One of a handful of the best interviews on KPCS. Great job, Kevin.
The best thing I have seen anywhere. Not just on the Internet. McGinley is always such good value for money - but Kevin Pollack and his team are amazing.
Except for Sam. I'm sorry but that kid is so annoying and intrusive.
Great actor! Loved him in Office Space
I never saw an interview with John C. McGinley, impressive, bright, passionate
In 2003, I saw him walking out of the parking garage at The Grove in Hollywood, and said, "Hey, Marv, would you do your own homework?" and he gave me a WITHERING look - and I still love him. -- and true to his word, he NEVER broke stride.
That’s great
His performance in intensity was an absolute masterclass.
I can't think of a better interview either of them have done. Good to see McGinley talk his career at such great length, including Se7en for the first time I've seen
That was outstanding, engaging and inspiring.
These interviews will become legendary.
❤❤❤❤❤ John thank you mate ❤❤❤❤❤you need to come to Australia ❤love from Australia.Clay
Consummate professional. Radiant presence. Excellent listener. Damn fine storyteller.
What a treat this was. Thank you, sir, for all the hard work and talent you've poured into your roles. It's clear you have a passion for storytelling - thank you for using your gift.
@25:27 Malkovich: "Get a fucking wig - ARE YOU DAFT?!"
@29:49 Oliver Stone: "You wanna play the lead in my fuckin movie?"
@31:10 Joe Papp: "We'll do Hamlet again when you get back...Go & tell Ollie I said Hi"
Yes! Indeed a most excellent interview! Many thanks!
The way John talks about actors and performances makes it REALLY sound like he should give directing a goddamn go.
excellent, one of the best interviews
To be honest I'd never exactly considered myself specifically like a huge John McGinley fan, I mean I've enjoyed and respected plenty of his work over the years, but not like I often went out of my way to plug into more of him. I kind of lazily first watched this not long after its debut when I didn't really have anything to do. There's been maybe like 5 different episodes from this series at this point that I have watched at least 3 times in their entirety over the years (& still paying full attention), this is one of them. The day I'm leaving this comment might have even been the 4th.
Love him in Office Space.
Two Bobs.
One of the best episodes for Kps
Terrific discussion about acting.
Excellent. "Being an Actor 101".
This is why I watch every week.
IMHO, exemplary acting is found in the eyes. John McGinley as Perry Cox is masterful in this regard; even in expository scenes, this dimension of his acting elevates even basic expository scenes and electrifies the dramatic ones. He's an actor's actor, and worthy of examination by anyone in the arts
Great show. Great actors.
This was a beautiful tennis match between two character actors. Loved it from 0:01 to end
Ones of the things I like about Johnny c. Is he is a humble actor,he has no problem just doing a little bit part in a movie and he can also star!
It's easy to forget sometimes just how incredible Scrubs could be. Could go from hilarious to painfully deep and be ridiculous and sincere at the same time.
I fully agree. Scrubs always reminded me of a live action broad cartoon that so happens to be a moving drama. I have never seen that kind of juxtaposition in a show ever
I loved him as Dr. Cox!!!!’
Good Lord!! How have I JUST found this?
I'll take it! 2020 has sucked balls so far.
❤❤❤❤❤ love from Australia.Clay ❤❤praze you Kevin ❤
Brilliant interview
McGinley is one of my very favorite actors, and this was great fun. It amused me that he dissed *Highway* because I loved his character in that (Johnny the Fox). The movie really wasn't good, but he was terrific.
Never saw that one but I liked how you said "actor" and not character actor : )
never has Samm and Jamie been so quiet... cant believe it was 2 hours
6:05 for the guest
SOOO miss Kevin doing this podcast. I know he's too busy now but....
a great interview, and wonderful stories :-)
Crazy to hear John say California (Seven) was only a 3 line role. That was the first role where I really noticed John and became a huge fan. He really did have Elvis dust!
without question, great episode
Kevin makes it look easy. I'm late to his 'show' but have throughly enjoyed each of the dozen + + I have seen. Would hope he gets some of the interviewees back for 'the rest of the story'
Around 20:00 they ask for a definition of the word "unctuous". For the record, it's pronounced "UNK-tchoo-us" and it literally means "oily", but contextually, it means that in the sense of being excessively smooth, suave, or smug. So like oily as a weasel or some other oily-fur bearing critter, and about as trustworthy.
Confidence personified. He's like a drill sergeant who was never in the military. One, if not the best actor anyone can afford
He's still holding onto that "widow's peak" for dear life.
Just a smart guy and great actor.
John C. McGinley, super cool. Eternally irritated. That's how I feel most days. Blessings...
Wow his memory is amazing
Great episode. I could have listened to another 2 hours.
What a great personality - good on you John C!
I studied with B.H. Barry too at Circle in the Square. He's great! :)
Great show
If he isn’t teaching an actors class - what a shame. Listening to McGinkey made me feel like I could go audition and land a role - and I’m not an actor lol! Christ he is passionate and inspiring!
John C. McGinley cool good actor , i love the fear in his voice " Bob i got a bad feeling about this one all right" "i dont think I`m going to make it out of here " "understand what I`m saying to you" ,,,, Everybody gotta die some time Red
Captain Dale Dye: "Red O'Neil, how ya doin'?
Sgt. O'Neil: "Just fine, sir."
Captain Dye: "That's good, cuz you've got second platoon."
O'Neil (Disbelief, sorrow and fear): "Yes, sir."
Great stories and John's impersonations were killing me. Easily up there with Jamie Lee or Hanks as my favorite episode.
Fantastic show. Fascinating listening to the inside-baseball stuff about working actors. But no Larry King Game?
Him and Kevin breaking down the mechanics of supporting characters is a bit of a revelation to me. It's been staring me in the face for as long as I've watched movies or TV and it's so obvious, but how it's picked apart and discussed here has definitely made me look at it a different way.
1:18:54 McGinley on Se7en & Fincher, for those interested: the best film he's been in, in my opinion. Talk Radio is an underrated classic, too
It is a tiny role, and he makes his fucking presence KNOWN (& yet not being at all hammy)
McGinley has always been solid.Top draw character actor.
what a pro
takes the craft massively serious
Oliver Stone impression killed me!
Fine job by all!
show needs more attention
It was one of the greatest TV shows of all time.It got me going through a lot.
Miss this chat show.
I think John C McGinley just invented a new game: The Oliver Stone Game.
This guy is pretty blunt and profane. Seen alot of his work. Spoke fast and was also blunt then. He wears a t shirt and shorts. How about that?
His entre movie listing is impossible
46:00 Awkward as usual when the cohost kid butts in. Especially awkward because Johnny C. is pretty authentic and not into bull crap. The kid should have asked it as a question, "Is that [hating when other actors don't know their lines] because of your theater days?"
I want John C. as a life coach.
remember the movie Intensity? great stuff john play a bad guy
That kitchen extract fan is still rumbling away in the background...
Great entertainer and Jersey guy.
Johnny is so intense. I love him
58:18 "cmon!" lmao
1:21:32 If this were a very common, regular practice in Hollywood, pretty much every third screenplay of the last 30 years would have "(a John Spencer type)" written somewhere in it.
The "Attaching a verb to listening" is interesting. I'll try it in my next droning meeting.
Fun to hear Kevin talk about Red State a bit, he was great in that movie and the movie itself is fantastic. Too bad Kevin Smith doesn't do more of that stuff.
Agreed, well.. a half great movie, but miles ahead of his later junk. Funnily, K Smith mentions he'd finished a dark and twisted script for a movie that'd make no money in their '09 kpcs, before he even thought of casting him.
love jc.m
"Scrubs was never top ten maybe top twenty" u wot
Woohoo, someone I know! First guest since Jamie Lee Curtis I have known.
He could "print" Cher in a second? I assume that's a sexual term, but I haven't heard it.
Amazing actor. Lol through college i worked as a restaurant manager and john C's depiction of dr. cox was my inspiration for management style. It worked surprisingly well actually
I bet it did. Did your staff hate you though? :D
+Pseudonayme 77 haha im sure some did but since i also did the hiring and the schedule, i kinda surrounded myself with the people i got along with... Hey i never said i was ethical about it lol
That's true about Pacino. I'm nobody, but I've met him a few times and he really is a sweet, genuine guy to everyone he meets.
not sure if stalking is meeting
+ahabthewhaler you haven't met me, but you ARE stalking me.
Elvis Dust = I'm awesome, you're awesome... let's be awesome together.
Great show!! Love to see Michael Keaton one day.
Is there a reason that this particular show is not numbered?
Well, now it is, past me.
- All these KPCS shows disappeared off YT for a good while - but now they're back! ....Err.....ok....Great!
I love this show, but I"m not sure about the unctuous quality regarding John Cusack, considering in a previous episode he was referred to as 'an old pile of coats' - as it should be!
My favorite John C. movie lines:
(1) what are you doin ...saving up to be Jewish ? (PLATOON)
(2)What ya think Bob ... a guy like that make it ?? (PLATOON)
(3) well Bob I was hoping you'd put me on the chopper with King.... what ya say there chief-a- roony? (PLATOON)
(4) BOB... I GOT A BAD FEELING ON THIS ONE (PLATOON)
(5) "It's Barry's show boss" (Talk Radio)
(6) HEY NICK I LIKE YOU LIKE THIS.... YOU AND YOUR PROM DATE HAVING WEAPONS ... (NOTHING TO LOSE)
(7) AHHH ... THAT'S GREAT.... THAT'S JUST FUCKING GREAT!!! (ANY GIVIN SUNDAY)
(8) Tom Sadowski...... He's useless (OFFICE SPACE)
NO LARRY KING GAME? What I would do to see John C McGinley do a Larry King Game.
At 1:29:44 I'm sure I'm not the only one who was immediately put in mind of, "What would you say... .ya DO here?" :-)
39:00 pineapples don't grow in trees
when in june will he be back and who is the guest. thats what i want to know. also what movie did john film in bloomington
Christ, I hope Oliver is just fucking around when he says lines like he's quoted as saying.
The fuckin man
I want him as the DCEU Jay Garricj
