    about the upgrade hotkey:
    i usually put my upgrades (ebay/armory/watev) on the same hotkey as my command centers.
    pressing tab (or the rebind) shouldn't be thaaat big of a problem for upgrades; additionally u always can spot if you are researching something while selecting your CC/nexus/hatch... which you do pretty frequently with pretty much every race.

    This is single-handedly the most useful video I've ever watched. I always struggled with hotkeys for my control groups since the closest numbers were for buildings and I would fat-finger trying to access 6 and 7 when controlling my army. Having spellcasters on Q and siege units on W with my army on 1 is now my default, it makes my play a lot more fluid.

    I like to use the alt key with select all army which i find helps a lot.
    i.e. say i have my drops on control group 2. I will bind all my army to control group 1 then select my drops via hokkeys and press alt 2 to clear them from the 1st
    its sounds complicated but it can be done quickly once you get the hang of it. I also unbind my f2 so Its always a conscious decision for me to use it and wont mess up my map presence

    that shift+click method for managing an F2 usage is great. Works also in other situations if you forget to shift click a scouting marine out of an army control group as you move out; he will still make his rounds. Thank you, Maru and uwuThermal XD

  • @vitusk8
    @vitusk8 3 роки тому

    Great video! The tip about Maru's F2 trick is pretty interesting.
    I don't know if people use ctrl to save camera keys, but by using shift I have no issues using F1-F7 for my bases.
    Also, the tilde is spot on. I love using that to go back to my ramp or wall asap.
    As for army hotkeys, I actually have more than 3.
    I feel it's okay depending on your setup, so long as you realize 2 things:
    (A) Splitting your army may force on-screen micro
    (B) It's better to move around with fewer clicks.
    For instance, as a protoss, I have stalkers on both 1 (main group) and q (just stalkers).
    I use 1 to move around and a-move, then q to blink and snipe vikings.
    If you have a special hotkey for units like templars/disruptors, they can follow an immortal/colossus to make it easier to move around.
    Even a warp prism can do that if you attack one of your units with it.
    I also like to use space bar for certain scouting units (e.g. observers, hallucinated phoenix, overlords).
    There are so many ways to fine-tune your mechanics w/ hotkeys, it's amazing.

    Thx for the amazing video! :) A thing i strugle with as terran is how to command your army efficient. LIke when there is a lategame fight and you have to burrow your mines, siege your tanks, stim and split your marines and maybe use the ghost for EMP's all at the same time i always just do one stuff, like i emp an Protoss army but then my stim is so late that the fight is almost over, i didnt burrow my mines etc. So i was always woundering if there are any tricks or methods, how to handle late-game armies efficiency, or if it is truely just a matter of training and becoming better/faster with your micro.

    Hello Mr @uThermal, love the vids, thanks!
    Questions:
    1. Do you forgo using the "Jump to Last Alert" hotkey (which was Space by default) then? Thought I needed to start using this but maybe pros dont.
    2. Are there any unit control tricks - maybe for a separate video - such as controlling medivac drops to drop on the move you could share?
    Cheers and keep up the good work!

    you can set hotkeys for both tab up and tab down, i have both as side mouse buttons
    so if you have rax/fac/starport all on the same hotkey, it would just be 4>mouse4>medivac. pretty much just as fast as clicking a hotkey for specifically starport.

  • @christhomas412

    I like to remap all the camera hotkeys to f1-f8, then use ' for f1 (idle workers) and 0 for f2 (so that it's kinda out of reach but still usable). Hotkey profiles can be saved, and if you have unbound stuff, it will more or less force you to do this. I also rebound esc to f9 since too many times I have cancelled a building or something (esp. frustrating when it's almost complete) because I hit esc instead of f1 :( Personally, I would avoid using w for groups if you even occasionally play protoss, this way you avoid confusing your army with warp-ins. Anyway, thanks for the great guide and ideas about moving patrol to z and lift/land to something closer, very helpful!

  • @checkmatenate
    @checkmatenate 9 місяців тому

    I will have to try switching patrol to z and lift building maybe on space bar as well. I use F1-F8 or whatever for all cameras hotkeys. But I usually just use F1-F4. I don’t use F2 select all army at all. I use Ctrl + Tilda for selecting all idle workers. And I also use J for stim because the C button is too awkward for me. I put all my upgrades and production on 4 and tan through everything. And I use 5 for my CC’s and scans which messes up my rally point sometimes when I want to scan before or during the fight. I also use caps lock key to add to control group 9. And I use army keys on 1,2,3, and caps lock. And I’m always switching the armies hot key depending on the game. I use Ctrl click and Alt clicking a lot and I use H key as well, sometimes also Ctrl r on the scvs. I marines spread and box click stim a small

  • @Mike6rs

    Hi Marc, this is my first comment on your YT channel so at first I would like to say that I'm super happy that You started a YT channel, I'm a big fan of You :). Videos are awesome and I love to watch them. This video is especially helpful for me as I struggle with army hotkeys a lot. It is because I'm using too many hotkeys and my struggle is to properly move the army which completely slow me down. I have to try out using just 1 to 3 hotkeys for entire army that I move out for an attack and see if this will improve my results (I'm platinum 3 btw. so nothing special just a casual fan of StarCraft 2). I have also a question on army control while using just one or up to three hotkeys. How to actually control entre Terran army composition in that case. A video on this topic might be also an awesome idea as I feel this is a deep topic. To explain a little bit better what I mean I simply show my current hotkeys: 2 - vikings, 3 - liberators, 4 - tanks, 5 bio (marines and marauders), 6 meivacks, 7 - raven (I usually have only one), 9 - buildings (production and upgrades), 0 command centers. Yes pretty dame crazy as it looks like for me there is not enough place for hotkeys. But I'm doing that because it feels as it is a bit easier for me to control the army like to siege and unsiege tanks or liberators, correctly control vikings (not flay into ground units or turrets etc.). I divided bio army and medivacks because otherwise I constantly fly them too far while giving order to attack and in that case those medivacks get exposed for an attack more than it is needed.

    • @uThermal
      @uThermal  3 роки тому +2

      A lot of units have a pretty good overlap in hotkeys, for example vikings and liberators can perfectly fine be on the same hotkey. The same with vikings and ghosts if you have those. Some top players also use bio and ghosts together, you dont need every single unit on a different hotkey if their unit movement doesnt differ that much

    • @whirlwind872
      @whirlwind872 3 роки тому +1

      How do you reach across the keyboard to hit 9 or 0 every time you want to access production? That sounds miserable! This is what I do. 1 - main army, 2 - ghosts, 3 - tanks, 4 - CCs, 5 - production, 6 - miscellaneous, don't use 7-0 at all cuz they're too hard to reach, but rebound 9 and 0 to tilde and Q. Tilde is for drops or runbys, and Q is for upgrades.
      You definitely do NOT need separate hotkeys for all the stuff you got hotkeyed, don't be afraid to just click on the screen! A lot of the time its better to manually click, ctrl-click, or box the units
      Try watching uthermal or another top Terran play and actually REALLY pay close attention to every single click they're making, focus intensely on the way they are physically controlling their units. Study them closely and try to copy what they do. Its amazing how much you miss when you just watch Starcraft passively, once you actually closely examine everything being done there's a ton you can learn

      It will still send your units to the point. Imagine you have a liberator or a medevac in an unreachable zone close to your opponent base. You select everything with F2 and press A-shift-click. Then your liberator / medevac will follow to the point. So, the trick is useful in the case the whole your army in a safe position and you want to open a second front.

    I really should do some rebinding for Terran. I've already done a little for Zerg. am currently using a modified "classic" layout. I've swapped jump to last notification, and base cam cycle, and that's it for Terran, while Zerg on the other hand I have overlords moved to A and swarm hosts to Y(I never consciously make them anyway), because I would rather make an overlord and potentially unblock my supply accidentally than make a useless swarm host because I was caught off guard and panicked. I also moved morph overseer to x from v because from where my hand is normally positioned it's a little harder to hit v. generally though I try to keep my "town halls" on 1, production on 2(for zerg my upgrade buildings like pool, hydra den and evos go here instead), army on 3 and 4, and upgrades on 5(I don't usually remember to do this one though) for Terran.

    The thing I've struggled since HotS, army positioning aside, how are you supposed to hotkey ghost-viking-bio army? I've played tons of Nova in coop and I've landed in the following setup, 5 as my main army, 3 as ghosts and 4 as vikings. When a fight is about to happen, I use the group steal keys to make sure ghosts and vikings are separate groups. Then I try to position everything best I can. Is this one of those cases where you don't use hotkeys at all and just rely on boxing and tabbing? Or is there an actual better way to do this?

Although if there are murauders u gonna have to tab twice. But u also wanna focus fire with tanks. Do u just control click them in fights? Also mines are way further in the tab priority i feel like tab is not a good way to borrow mines. Do u also just ctrl click? Finally for ghosts, do u snipe normally or do u rapid fire?

      A lot of units can be on the same control groups, all bio + medivacs will always be on the same one for example. Usually I have all bio on 1, ghosts or tanks on 2 ( if I only have widow mines they can be on 2 ) and air army on 3, widow mines are not high priority for control groups because you dont need to micro them all at the same time

    As for planetary fortress, you can put it on the same as patrol, as you would never use both at the same time anyway.

    Something I was wondering for Terran players, do you do the following (since you cannot hotkey eggs or units you have just warped in):
    F2 > add to group (whichever you want the new units to be in) > consecutively, for every other army group, you select it and steal it's units into the same group.
    Also, what do you think of having ccs + only one of the army production buildings in the same hotkey (so either barracks or factories or starports) and doing rallies with the rally hotkey? The idea is to keep the same hotkey count as when you have all 3 army production buildings in the same hotkey while removing tabbing twice in the same group (though you will still have to tab twice in total a macro cycle that uses all 3 building types).
    (Eg: 4 is ccs and barracks, 5 is factories and starports)

    • @smnvalex
      @smnvalex 3 роки тому

      Much easier to just rally units properly and then hotkey them from there. Using F2 in my experience is for the most part to find specific unit types to add them to a different hotkey such as ghosts

      People tend to put the “more important” hotkeys on the closest/fastest ones. Idk how much of a difference it makes, but if you have to react quickly in a fight, pressing 1 or 2 is like faster/more instinctual

    • @uThermal

    Map F2 to the caps lock key?(mostly JK) Edit: Oh Q and W, that's cool. Also tilda and tab for camera locations(as long as you have another location for tab function like "back" on your mouse.
    I don't quite understand why adding all production to the barracks key when you're going to have factory and starport separate as well.

    How do you split the army hotkeys before an engagement? Like say 1 is your entire army, but it also includes ghosts. How do you quickly create a group without ghosts and one for only the ghosts?

    • @DeanJarratt
      @DeanJarratt Рік тому

      I believe you can CTRL+Click a Ghost in the selection window (might require changing the selection window number). Then Alt + 2 should remove all Ghosts from Group 1 and set them up under Group 2.

    Why cant you use E for Planetary? Ive rebound nearly all spells to E. Bad?
    My recommendation would be to get other places for F1 and F2 and use those for location hotkeys. Example Ctrl-tab for idle workers (remove reverse tab function) and shift-tab for all army. Same button for different functions and the button you need is already pressed like ctrl to get all workers and shift to move all idle army without making new orders for those who already have it.

    I would be really interested in a dedicated camera hotkeys video. I've been playing for a long time all types of strategy games that didn't have this feature (notably Brood War and Age of Empires II) and I have never ever used them cpnsistently. Everybody is saying how useful they are in SC2 and I have tried using them and learning them (hotkeying my three bases and fourth hotkey for my rally point) but as soon as I get in mid-late game I get totally out of the rhythim to use them and forget it. I am sure there must be very useful tricks out there!

    • @FenixBG
      @FenixBG 3 роки тому

      BTW in Broodwar hotkeying like 7-9 things is quite common. You do use control groups as camera hotkeys there, e.g. setting your nexus on 8 and 1 production structure on 9 and placing all production structures around it.

    • @Kradukman
      @Kradukman 3 роки тому +1

      You have to focus practice. Just play a lot of game where the only goal is to use the camera hotkeys, not clicking the minimap. Your game is a success if you use the hotkey during the full match, not if you win or loose. I think it also comes with the number of action that you have to execute. After a certain point, you waste too much time clicking on the minimap.

    Have you thought about a bronze to gm like series like vibe did for terran? Of course you don't need to start at bronze, but maybe at diamond and try to handicap yourself with your build and apm. The goal: Just make intelligent reads and decisions, I think perfect timing/ apm will always improve the game of viewers but hard to replicate.. However, I think deep insight into counters/ plans/ strategy will help a lot:]

    • @uThermal
      @uThermal  3 роки тому +2

      Hmm I have done some videos at lower mmr ranges ( like the mouse only ) but I don't really like the idea in smurfing on lower leagues. I honestly don't think pro players can replicate what bronze play is like and 'just win by making good decisions'.

    Seems masochistic not to use grid hotkeys 0.o I never once struggled to remember where a key was. I rearranged my camera keys to f1 f2 f3 f4 7 U J and my control groups to 1 2 3 4 5 6 Y H N M to make them easier to reach. F5 is the longest reach so it's Select All Army, Caps Lock is Select Idle Worker, Tab is Tab.
    I actually use every hotkey, too.

    Hi all
    Suggestion:
    F5 (select all army like F2)
    F6 Add to groupe 1
    F7 select groupe 2
    F8 create groupe 2 and take away unit from other groups.
    So your dropships or whatever in groupe 2 stay in groupe 2.
    Now that I'm writting this, I thing I should inverse from F8 to F5 because the finger on left hand slide better from the right to left (than left to right) :)
