I was part of the choir for this show, it was an amazing experience. Dave Grohl was on drums for all the rehearsals, so it was a surprise to everyone when Jason Bonham came out for the final performance. Also, this video has footage both from the dress rehearsal, and the live performance. After the show was over, Stephen Colbert came up to me and 2 of my fellow choir members to tell us that we did a great job, it was surreal. Choral arrangement was done by Rob Mathes, and our chorus director is Joyce Garrett. Our choir was also at Obama's inauguration, Bruce Springsteen Super Bowl, and every Christmas in Washington performance on TNT, until it was canceled. We were drawn from a lot of different sources around the DC area, including some former High School choirs after we all graduated, some church choirs, and eventually some University of Maryland choir members. We rehearsed every day including weekends for about 3 weeks for this, and for most of our performances
Your choir performances - both mic’d 🎤 small choir and mass choir with Bonzo’s bowler hats - were the most powerful accents on this tributes. Don’t get me wrong, the strings, horns, keys all awesome accents too. But you guys in the choirs made it truly Stairway to Heavenly! Thank you 🙏🏽
Andrew , what can I say, you have your opinion and I have mine. I admit I haven't heard every female singer in the world . so just for you I'll reword it, she's one of the best singers I've heard. Just for the record she's even better live, especially when your right at the front 😁
I agree jerry. Everytime I see this I look away. Because it looks full of love, missing and sorrow. I watch this all the time and after the first time ive always looked away
Fun fact, Robert pretty much hates it, when others sing their songs, and on top of his "do not touch" list, is "Stairway to heaven". But... he does have a soft spot for the Wilson sisters, and he sought them out after the show, to not only congratulate them on a job well done, but also to tell them he really loved the performance. And what isnt there to love about this, the choir, the orchestra, the second choir, the bowler hats, Jason Bonham, "Blue" Lou Marini! (ok, i added him for me, because i'm a HUGE fan of his work) and the Wilson sisters ofc. (Heart, the female counterpart to Led Zeppelin) I love the joy you express when hearing this masterclass performance of the giant classic song by Led Zeppelin by the lovely sisters. Ann's vocals are as good as way back in the 70s' she has not lost a single frequency from her range, she's still as clear as a church bell, and Nancy has got to be one of the best acoustic guitar players around, the talent these two share among them, is almost unfair lol... almost ;) Ann is 69 now, but if you didnt know, someone could easily fool you into thinking this is a lady in her early 30's or even her 20's. (she was 62 or 63 at the time of this honoring) and over 4 decades, they've been at it, and been successful from day one. Ty again Valerie, for a great video and reaction, to me, if i cannot have the Led Zeppelin version, then this version is the perfect replacement for me, the power of it all... just wow. (Edit, in this video, i just love how Yo Yo Ma is enjoying it all, and how Bonnie Riatt is rocking out to this wonderful performance)
@Andrew Ongais She's is to be seen, close to the ending of the song, her distinctive white lock of hair, can be spotted hehehe :) (Edit* looked it up for you, in this video, its at the 7:46 mark, 2 seconds of one hell of a awesome lady :D )
John, well said. I too loved the joy and personal tid-bits she added. Ann's voice has remained strong and clear all these decades. Another musician reactor explained how difficult keeping every note crisp and on time Nancy's intro is to do.
I love that it was Jason Bonham on drums wearing a "bowler hat" like his father used to wear. And all the choir members at the end were wearing bowler hats too. A touching tribute to the late great John Bonham.
the hat was his dads not a re pop and the drum kit was his fathers not played sine he died was in the same shape as then skins and all it was the real deal !!.
Why must people stop mid song. Also have you seen Luciano Pavarotti singing Nessun Dorma from the opera turandot at the 3 tenors concert. I think it was early 2000
I think both Ann and particularly Nancy Wilson are under-rated by the general public .... they belong among the pop-legends. And being joined by Jason Bonham, drumming his heart out to honour Led Zeppelin as well as his late father John, the original drummer of Zeppelin, is a joy to behold.
@@kdbadk Nancy sings lead vocals on a decent chunk of Heart's songs, particularly their '80s-era stuff. She doesn't really get to show it off as much these days but she was a hella underrated guitarist back in the day.
As homages go, this is as respectfully on point as something can be. You have it exactly right. No one better than Ann to handle the tall order that is Robert Plant. Thank You!
Same here. It's the song construction, Ann's vocal performance, the orchestra, the intense scrutiny and anxiousness on Plant's face, Plant's tear when he accepted that those onstage had 'Done It' (turned out a monstrous cover/tribute,) and the suddenly revealed second giant choir! I'm 70 and have been a music freak and TV watcher since '59, and can't remember a performance as hypnotizing and bombastically done!!!
Seven years later, this is still one of the best performances I've ever seen in my life. I hope she's Sung it many times since then, because it really became her song that night.
Spot on !! A miraculous emotionally defying tribute by legends to legends that will never be duplicated on any level and forever will be remembered embraced by fans/friends /followers of both Heart and Led Zeppelin ! I cry every time I see /hear this !
I loved the detail, the hats in remembrance of their late drummer. Must have been so emotional for his son to drum there, full circle. ❤ Ann's voice...😍 Great reaction!
40 years ago I was dating a girl that lived a block away from Ann. Neighbors and friends were invited for a "campfire sing-a-long" in her backyard on the lake. A bunch of Beatle tunes and Carpenters and oldies and such. Sat next to her, and her voice MOVED MY HAIR ! And her voice is even better now. Have "known" them since... many full shows (very close) on my channel. From many years ago right up until last month. Best is Showbox... and Christmas Show with many special guests.
Plant was misty eyed the entire Heart performance. If you watch from the entire Heart performance, you'll notice their reaction when Jason Bonham walked out. They (Zeppelin) didn't know he was going to be there and was an utter surprise when he walked on stage. Plant said all he could think about was John Bonham and how much he would have loved this performance. That's why you see Jimmy and John bouncing in their seats and Robert is sitting almost motionless. It was an incredibly emotional performance for Robert.
This is the most perfect *performance* EVER! I have watched it many times and never tire of it. I love the way it starts out with just Nancy then Ann then builds many layers until ultimately the end with everything and everybody in perfect unison. Ann with her perfect voice and presence! All this in front of LZ! And, John Bonham's (hence the derbies) son, Jason, on drums. Oh, my!
sassiebrat : I don’t know if it was an action by UA-cam mod but a comment was posted on here by some childish, 20 going on 13 troll, referring to Ann’s gender. Thank goodness, it is no longer here.
Sassiiebrat: just for info and continuing learning, we refer (UK) to “derbies” as Bowler hats. They were introduced as part of the uniform worn by the gamekeepers on one of our rich men’s estate. But in those days there was more violence so the hat was armoured to reduce the effect from a blow with a truncheon.
Remember, Anne Wilson is in her late 60s when she sang this, well past her prime of 30 years earlier, yet she is still amazing. She can't quite hit those high notes she once did with ease, but what Rock lead vocalist can at that age? Just so powerful still today. Saw them in concert way back in 1977 in their hometown of Seattle, and it was an unbelievable evening. Thanks
I love what the people who put this together did. They did not try to compete with the original they just made it special. I think you have to watch this performance to fully appreciate it but you only need to hear Zeppelin on the radio to immures yourself in this song.
Ann Wilson the best woman singer in rock and roll 😇🎙 ....add Nancy strumming away and John's son ( Jason Bonham on drums ) It's a perfect match.... they nailed it solid ❤ Best cover of "Stairway" ....EVER ! ( R.I.P Bonzo )
I'm still in awe watching this Valerie, one of your best, love you girl..arguably one of the number one songs of all time.... the looks on Robert Plants face and Jimmy Page, priceless. I think I can die now :-)
"If you were born after 1999, let me explain, they are watching rock legends- Heart- cover rock gods in front of said rock gods on a night the rock gods are being honored for their rock godliness, choosing the rock gods most famous song and they slayed it!!"
Valerie - there's a version of Heart's "Alone" done acoustically by Floor, Marco & Troy from Nightwish you should react to. Ann said she loved it, the same way Lady Gaga did with Floor's version of "Shallow". ❤️
This cover by Heart is several years old and has been reviewed over and over--and I have yet to hear one word of critism! Everybody found this an astonishing performance. the choir was such a great idea! Ann was not drowned out!
Page is the MAN! ............Ann and Nancy have covered Zep songs for decades. In fact they played in front of Zeppelin during Zeps induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
Been watching Heart tearing up Zep tunes since 74' . Best covers of Zep ever. Saw Heart and the Led Zepplin Experience with Jason a few years back . Excellent
I absolutely LOVE this version... And Ann Wilson is and ever was such a stunning, gifted and underrated vocalist! I absolutely also love the version of "Alone" they did - ok a little less breath in some notes compared to the original 80's version but sooooo much feeling and love, exceptional. And come on, she's born 1950 - if I only perform at 20% of what she does at her age I will be in heaven ;)
Plant and Page have both made no secret of the fact that they are not fond of "Stairway" being performed/butchered by others. It's wonderful to watch them go from rather stoic and closed in the beginning of this performance to a laughing, enthusiastic standing ovation at the end. A smashing perfromance and a lovely tribute indeed.
Seeing Robert crying .. is so moving I’m sure he was looking back 40 years seeing himself on stage with his friend John behind him ... I was crying the whole time ..
And think about how blown away Zeppelin was by this performance, not to mention how it was for Heart to sing in front of their heroes. Jimmy Paige was so astounded that he laughed like a young kid at how epic this was. In a way, they got to hear their song like it was something they were hearing for the first time---- this version was so good that they not only could reminisce about it while listening, but appreciate it in another way--- like they had never heard it before, because of the level at which Heart pulled it off. It wasnt some knock-off cover for sure. This version, in fact, was equal to and maybe even (unimaginably) better than the original, and the original was otherworldy. Heart, though, knocked it out of the universe. Amazing and beyond!
Beautiful! You could tell that Jimmy Page wanted so badly to be up there during that guitar solo. Heart is the lonely band that could do Led Zeppelin justice.
Jimmy said on the BBC that they wrote the song in such a way that covering artistes could select different ways to open levels of the song in different ways. I feel that Ann and Nancy have actually made it there.
Epic is the correct way to describe this tribute to Led Zeppelin. I think I like it better than the original, just for the pure emotion it brings out. Everything - the choir with the bowler hats, Bonham's son on the drums, Nancy's voice and Ann's intro - evoke the raw feelings of missing someone who is gone. Robert Plant almost brought to tears - me, well I don't have that kinda control. I sob everytime I see this performance.
Great reaction. I got a lump in my throat when Jason looked up as if looking for his dad. If you aren’t moved by that and Robert Plant in tears, then there’s something wrong with you. And Nancy and the guitarist had to be nervous knowing Jimmy Page was watching them play his riffs
Nancy Wilson can mesmerize anyone with her guitar skills. Then add Ann Wilson's vocals and it's perfection. No one else could pull this off. Notice Bonnie Raitt in the audience - rockin' it!
I got to see them perform this in person. At the site of the original Woodstock. Barefoot in the rain with some of my favorite people. Group hugs after. I'll never forget it.
this was an outstanding performance. Beautiful and powerful. I used to listen to this blasting my ears. The guy looked super emotional. great reaction.
Absolutely love this. One of my favs. Best arrangement!! Great musicians! Ann, well, just nails it. I love watching the guys react too. So emotional. Loved your reaction too.
I love this performance . I also liked the reaction the remaining members had to it. I just have to say, Led Zeppelin played this with 3 musicians and one vocalist, and their live version had every bit as much impact as this symphonic performance and with a choir. By the way, they are wearing the John Bonham bowler hat in memory of Bonzo, RIP.
Wonderful reaction! This was an astounding performance! What a tribute! Great analysis as well, by someone who understands the history and significance of this moment in time! Nicely done!
It's hard not to tear up its so beautiful it just keeps building they have nerves of steel to play in front of Robert and the other Zep band members :-)
The "good drumming reaction" was to a part that John Bonham played on the live version from " The Song Remains The Same". His son paid tribute to him during that part. A subtle addition that makes this whole performance legendary.
Drummer is the son (Jason Bonham) of the late John Bonham, the original, and only drummer for the Band. Later you see Robert Plant tear up and tap his chest ("Love you."). He had no idea that Jason was going to be the drummer for this Led Zeppelin Kennedy Center Awards Tribute. So touching, I began to tear up as well. I'll bet John Bonham was looking down and saying "That's my son...atta Boy...atta Boy."
That's why I didn't recognize the drummer. Heart is a big Seattle band and their regular drummer has been Ben Smith. No wonder Robert Plant had that reaction. Thanks for sharing. :)
Great commenting. Being from a music background, this song rendition was great. Your articulation to go with a mesmerizing face made t complete. Keep up your great work, especially in these trying times.
I've had the pleasure of seeing 3 of the greatest vocalists in rock live in my lifetime. Steve Perry of Journey, Freddie Mercury of Queen (both of them twice) and Ann Wilson of Heart. I saw Heart way back in 1977 during the "Little Queen" tour in Asbury Park, New Jersey on the boardwalk at Convention Hall. It was August 16th the day Elvis died, to honor the King they dedicated the final song of their encore Zeppelin's "Rock and Roll" to him.
I read the Ann and Nancy used to do Led Zeppelin covers before they became famous. I believe it because they were spot on. Ann Wilson is the queen of rock!
I’ve seen them in concert.. They were awesome.. I’m (61) and all the great music was when I was young...The guy playing the drums; his dad was the original drum player.. The hats they all were wearing; his Dad wore it...

@Andrew Ongais name a few since there's no way in hell, you could name a hundred, that are better.
This was also an emotional performance for Robert Plant as the drummer is John Bonham son.
What always gets me is his glance upwards at the end. Feels like intruding upon a private moment of joy, love but also grief.
I agree jerry. Everytime I see this I look away. Because it looks full of love, missing and sorrow. I watch this all the time and after the first time ive always looked away
..and John Bonham was a dear friend of his...brought him to join Zeppelin.

It was an award banquet for led Zeppelin Stairway to Heaven 50 years and still rocks on and she nailed it
Nancy Wilson can mesmerize anyone with her guitar skills. Then add Ann Wilson's vocals and it's perfection. No one else could pull this off. Notice Bonnie Raitt in the audience - rockin' it!
And Yo Yo Ma head banging a bit and Debbie Allen raising her hands and getting some religion.
@@dicklauder Don't forget Bonnie Rait
Rock history made before our eyes 👍
I got to see them perform this in person. At the site of the original Woodstock. Barefoot in the rain with some of my favorite people. Group hugs after. I'll never forget it.
this was an outstanding performance. Beautiful and powerful. I used to listen to this blasting my ears. The guy looked super emotional. great reaction.
one can tell from your genuine and joyful reaction that you a true fan! One of the BEST reactions to this performance, thanks.
Brilliant reaction. thank you!
My favorite part of it was the beginning with Nancy finger picking the start of the song. It is so clear and precise.
Makes me emotional every time I see this performance
Absolutely love this. One of my favs. Best arrangement!! Great musicians! Ann, well, just nails it. I love watching the guys react too. So emotional. Loved your reaction too.
I love this performance . I also liked the reaction the remaining members had to it. I just have to say, Led Zeppelin played this with 3 musicians and one vocalist, and their live version had every bit as much impact as this symphonic performance and with a choir. By the way, they are wearing the John Bonham bowler hat in memory of Bonzo, RIP.
Saw this when it aired on tv and you just knew you were witnessing magic and history. Still gives me chills seeing it!
Legends of rock paying tribute to legends of rock. Outstanding.
That was amazing !
glad to see somebody understands this song- just gotta feel it- peace!
Ann Wilson....the greatest!! More Heart, please.
Rock goddess, singing in from of rock gods, an epic performance of a legendary song!
So good to hear a voice coaches take on this performance! Thank you xx
Ufff, Page's face all the song...so, so emotive. Can't contain the thears. Awesome.
The "good drumming reaction" was to a part that John Bonham played on the live version from " The Song Remains The Same". His son paid tribute to him during that part. A subtle addition that makes this whole performance legendary.
So love what you said... music is about sharing and community, not competition. ❤
Your spontaneous and emotional reaction was as entertaining to me as the (as you say) "epic" performance itself......wonderful to watch...
Great commenting. Being from a music background, this song rendition was great. Your articulation to go with a mesmerizing face made t complete. Keep up your great work, especially in these trying times.
What Aretha was to soul/r&b, Ann is the rock and roll equivalent. When Wilson sings, I get goosebumps...chills.
Also...Nancy Wilson is 66 (I just looked it up)...and still breathtakingly beautiful.
Greatest cover ever and great analysis too.
I cry every time i see this cover...thank you for your reaction video
There is no video but Ann Wilson's tribute "Jezabel" is other worldly. Best I've ever heard.
Love this! Loved Jason Bonham playing drums too. I've always loved Led Zeppelin, and heart too. Very cool!
Heart was my first concert, and I fell hard for Nancy Wilson. Of course I was a Zeppelin fan, so this really meant something to me
Vocal Splendor - I LOVED your reactions and constant smiles to this brilliant performance.
