Another gem 💎 of a post. I think I have watched this cover 50 times in the last year. It’s phenomenal to say the least. It’s such an emotional capture of greatness on so many levels. Thanks for the effort in breaking some of the details out on such an iconic cover. 🙏🏼
I love the sweet irony that Ann and Nancy did this to honor the immortal legacy of Led Zeppelin, and simultaneously cemented their own legacy in the process. Beautiful!
She's one of the greatest female vocalist of all time. You could tell that they were honored to have Heart playing one of their greatest songs of all time. I don't think they could've picked anyone else any better for that song. Awesomeness.
Plant talked about in an interview how he was mostly paying attention to Jason Bonham (on drums), the late John Bonham's son. Between him and the bowler hat choir (which was one of John's signature looks), the whole experience really took him back and made a lot of emotion well up in Robert, which I imagine is why he was in tears for most of the performance.
Led Zeppelin specifically requested that Heart do this...after all, back in the day, Heart was called the female Zeppelin. Ann, THE BEST female rock singer of all time!
That's not actually accurate. The Kennedy Center asked Ann and Nancy to do it (not the entire group Heart, but just those two -- which is why they were announced as "Ann and Nancy Wilson of Heart") because Jason thought Ann would be the perfect vocalist. In fact, the Heart label on this recording is way misleading, because it's not Heart's band playing it and it wasn't Ann, Nancy, or anyone affiliated with Heart who arranged it. The Zeppelin guys had no idea who was going to be on stage, which is why Robert looked so surprised at the beginning when Jason walked out. Robert has always liked Ann personally and thinks she is a great singer, but for years was very annoyed when her voice was compared to his so I'm not sure she would have been his first choice even though practically everyone else thinks she's the only one vocally qualified to cover Zeppelin.
She’s always been a favorite voice of mine. I love that she didn’t veer too far off of the original and kept the essence of what made this song stand out
I rarely like covers! This one was done so well and truly honored Led Zeppelin properly. I don’t believe anyone could have done it better! Great video.
Ann Wilson did an awesome job covering “She Talks To Angels” by The Black Crowes! I’d recommend it very highly! After all I was introduced to her band Heart by going to listen to her earlier stuff after seeing the video on UA-cam for her performance on that one song.
It's truly amazing how affected the artists were to sit there and have that presented to them. It blows me away just to think about it, rchelicopterheaven!
Hey again Ken! Ann Wilson, for me, the best female rock lead EVER! No one can top her especially live. I've been up close at several of HEART concerts and this lady is absolutely amazing! Adding Nancy to the mix just makes the entire thing perfect.
In '79 a girl I met lived 2 blocks from Ann on Lake Washington. Was invited to a "friends and neighbors Bar-B-Que" at her house. I could play Beatle songs, and Ann sat me right next to her. Her voice moved my hair !!! Best voice ever. Just fun oldies and Beatles. Have since met them many times, and they let me film all their shows way up close. On my channel !
I always get so moved watching Zepp watch the performance. Robert looked so emotional...like he was going through years of memories in his head and just really realizing the enormity of what they accomplished while listening to their work being done so beautifully. I also felt like Ann was moving him to the verge of tears at the climax of the song (I know she did that to me). Jimmy was just loving it and in awe. I have watched this performance countless times and it just never gets old.
Love this performance & Heart, but Jason’s presence brings me to tears every time. 😢 Especially when he looks up as if to say “This is for you, dad” ❤️ My heart! Needless to say he did his dad proud!!❤️ Then his kiss to the band at the end~ they’ve really stepped in for Bonzo & have always been there for Jason... personally & professionally. Beautiful relationship. ❤️
I remember Robert Plant even saying that one of the main reasons he teared up during this performance was because of seeing Jason there drumming... and he just thought of John and how amazing it was for Jason to be doing John's part.
THIS is a stunning performance. I get chills and goosebumps whenever I watch it (Like Pink Floyd's 'Pulse' concert version of 'Comfortably Numb'). From all reports, Robert Plant, John Paul Jones, and Jimmy Page were VERY impressed and awed by the performance as well!
I have so much respect for Heart, hearing her vocals always give me the chills. THIS one though......I am STILL tingling. What a voice, a true powerhouse. Loved the video and commentary as always. Happy Thanksgiving to you Ken and your family. Rock on 🤘🎶🎼🎤
To my untrained ear, it I love the entire performance and Ann just killed the song. It’s not often you hear a female voice cover that really does justice to the original. Her voice is so thick and full of powerful tone.
Wow. When I hear Ann Wilson singing "stairway to heaven", my heart melts and flows into the infinity of the universe. It's the same feeling I had when I first heard these songs in 1971. For me it was like a glance into heaven, made possible by Led Zeppelin.
In my amateurish standing, this is the best cover of a great song, EVER!!! HEART has always tried to emulate L.Z. and on that night they for a few minutes became a truly fine version of them. Cool that the L.Z. crew got to see it in person.
Ken I love your face!! The expressions of joy when you listen to the performances are very moving to me. You beam with passion! Brightens my day as much as the music
I love this version, its very powerful and a true homage to the band and to John Bonham. The entire second choir and ofc Jason Bonham on drums, all wearing Bowlerhats in honor of the late, great, John Bonham. Robert getting emotional, John-Paul and Jimmy having a blast, the audience taking it all in, that is musical magic right there, on that stage. Thnx for the upload Ken :)
Same that’s my biggest irritation of most Zeppelin covers. The singers just do way too much. Ann keeps it true to the original which fits the song much better
What is remarkable about this is that Ann starts the song so gently and then builds up with a massive voice. It takes enormous cojones to perform a song like this in front of the guys who wrote it. This was incredible. PS: I know what it's like to play a piece of music in front of the composer. When I was a kid,, I played accordion and played at a festival each year. One time the adjudicator had written the piece of music and ripped my playing to shreds. It made me a better musician and composer.
The Wilson Sisters are my idols such trialblazers for woman in rock and them doing one of the most amazing covers of my favorite band ever Led Zeppelin is just amazing !!
What blows me away is the amazing amount of depth and dimension the choir and expanded range of instruments brings to this song. To me it really adds flesh to the bones. Makes it more complete if you will. A moving and we'll performed tribute that always brings a tear to my eye.
Hi Ken. A little late to the party. I think part of the magic is that the words carry even more weight when sung by a female, especially Ann. It creates more empathy for the woman in the song. I also believe this is one of the greatest live performances of any kind. The musical direction and audio mix was outstanding.
I totally agree about loving this song sung by a woman as it adds something special. Also, I think the whole production was under the very talented Paul Shaffer.
I've watched this dozens of times and I get chills every time. I believe in numerous interviews over the years the ladies have stated that Zeppelin was a big influence on them back in the day. I saw them way back in 1977 on the boardwalk in Asbury Park, NJ at Convention Hall. The date was August 16th, the day Elvis died, during their encore they did "Rock n Roll", by Zeppelin, to honor the King.
Goosebumps. Goosebumps. Goosebumps. Who doesn't like Led Zeppelin? I am sure there are people who don't like them, and that's what makes this world go around. Heart, yes. Nancy Wilson on the guitar. Ann and her magical voice. If you don't watch it, you can hear her sound a bit like Robert Plant. Great video. Much respect.
Anne said, her and Nancy were nervous behind the curtain, also No one knew the late drummers son was going to play. The larger choir w bolo hats , we’re a tribute to his dad. I guess it pumped the choirs up, they used stand in drummers. That whole show was awesome.. 🎉🇨🇦
BTW, that was now deceased Led Zeppelin drummer John Bohnam's son Jason Bonham on the kit. He was not only paying homage to the mighty Led Zeppelin, but also to his father. This should have been recorded and released on an album...IMHO. Absolutely brilliant performance!
two of my most favorite groups of all time.... ever!! most excellent rendition/tribute. it would be an honor to be able to sound as great in front of Led Zepplin. amazing!! just pure and simply AMAZING! loved the performance. Ann and Nancy just killed it, and so did Jason. He did his father proud.
Heart is my all-time favorite group and of course Ann is my all-time favorite female singer. I have seen them live about six times throughout the years. I believe that at every show that I've been to, they have always done a couple Zeppelin songs. Mainly during their encore. This may have already been mentioned in the comments but the gentleman that was playing the lead guitar was not supposed to be playing that part. I read an interview that Ann did about the event and she mentioned Jeff Beck was to play initially. I don't know at what time it was decided he wasn't playing but perhaps the person who did didn't have much time to prepare.
Imagine being Led Zeppelin at that concert. I almost teared up and got the chills just watching it from here but being there with all those people and that amazing, awesome performance, Jason Bonham on the drums, it's just perfect. Awesome moment that I watched years ago and forgot, thank you for reminding me and happy Thanksgiving
I watched this live; BLOWN AWAY!!! My two favorite bands of ALL time... other than the Grateful Dead of course... LOL! Omg so amazing! I strive to find my own expression of this sound.
I think this is absolutely the best version ever minus the original. It is common knowledge that Robert Plant really doesn’t think too highly of this song but to the rest of us it is the epitome of a perfect song. The band does a stellar job- perfect tempo to a song that has no bounds. The singing is so good it is jaw dropping. The background vocals are icing on top of the cake. There is one thing about all versions and even the live version of the guitar solos… the originals cannot be replicated… it’s something so special, it just isn’t the same no matter who plays it. Epic version ..my favorite.
The Kennedy Center Honors has been around since the 1970s. A few years ago, the Kennedy Center Honors listed the top five performances and two of them happened on that night. The other performance was Jeff Beck and Beth Hart's cover of I'd Rather Go Blind.
This video is so emotional because you see this guys and think, what a beautifull contribution they gave to rock! I think that is not thanks enough to say to them. I saw Mary J. Blidge sing this song very well to, o think one day you may react to.
Finally!!!! Haven't watched yet....but going to right now! I LOVE LOVE LOVE THIS PERFORMANCE and have watched it a ridiculous amount. LOL Watching now! Thank you, Ken!
you are so wrong about how me. plant was thinking. he was very proud and very emotional about the beautiful song he performed many years ago. I could tell it was almost bringing tears to his eyes.
YESSSSSS!!!!! I'm so glad you finally reviewed this!!! I watch this video at least three times a week. Talk about emotional! How can you not be moved by this performance!? Thank you Ken! Thank you for finally reviewing this iconic performance! ❤👍👏
I’m a huge Heart fan, as well as Zeppelin. But i feel that this song when covered requires a certain kind of voice. I think they nailed it. “Stairway to Heaven, is one of those songs that is just pure rock gold and a classic. I don’t think just anyone can sing it, it has to be a certain kind of vocalist to sing it with the respect it deserves.” But i will say that in my opinion Heart accomplishes this hands down. I’m sure that woman, was stunned when she realized it was Robert Plant lol.
If the Led Zeppelin boys approve then so do I lol. I love the way Ann and Nancy do this song and you are right about Ann being a good fit for Plant's vocals. Would also be cool to hear you do a version of this.
did you release this video 3 years ago? why I did not see it?. I have watched that video so many times! tears come from my eyes each time....what a great surprise to see this review from you! :) :) my favorite UA-cam channel!

It was a moving performance and an experience to imagine it was like behind Robert, Jimmy, and John Paul's eyes!
I felt that Robert was seeing his whole life flowing by. That was his look.
*his legacy

She's the Queen 👑 70 years old and still singing damn amazing as she always did
saw Ann with her own band here two years ago. Lots of blues style tunes plus "Barracuda"! Blew the roof off the Paramount!!
Don't miss the fact the Jason Bohnam is on the drums recreating his dad's groove to perfection.
Did you see how Jason looked up when the song was almost over? Kind of like he was saying..."This is for you dad". Complete chills.
On his dad's kit, if I remember correctly. Just an amazing performance.
All the bowler hats too!
*Jason really made his dad proud!!! 🔥🤘🔥*
Yes!
Indeed he did
Absolutely Sanjay. I'm sure his dad was right there with him in spirit.
I love the way she takes her time once she sings 'and not to ROLL' to get to C5. It's the cherry on top for me. She's an amazing singer.

I was touched by Robert Plant's reaction to hearing Ann sing his trademark song. No one could have done it better. Perfection at it's finest.

you are so wrong about how me. plant was thinking. he was very proud and very emotional about the beautiful song he performed many years ago. I could tell it was almost bringing tears to his eyes.
ZEPPs reaction say more than any words about this performance. This must be the last step of the stairway, when you actually enter the HEAVEN

Haaa the bubble gum story! 😅😅 love those kind of stories :)
If the Led Zeppelin boys approve then so do I lol. I love the way Ann and Nancy do this song and you are right about Ann being a good fit for Plant's vocals. Would also be cool to hear you do a version of this.
Thanks for the suggestion, Joe!
