@@RedBeardOps I ave a question before you go sir... I dunno if you're familiar with the EXTREMELY frugal grinding option of the harbor freight 4×36 belt sander... But I was wondering if You thought it might be possible to affix a diy surface grinder(not unlike the older surface grinder I've seen you use in older videos) to a rig like the above mentioned 4×36.
A bit late bit if I am going to put scallops in the handle like that esp with handle material that has many alternating layers I like make it nothing but scallop and do my best to even it up by eye and use a moderate-high grit belt like 240 to do all of it. This will break it up visually and precision is less important since the eye doesn't really focus on how uneven it is since the handle material is many different layers and since it is all scallops there is no flat for a visual reference. I have to say that I find most knife makers like either 5/32 or 3/16 for most general purpose knives, so good recommendation for the subscribers 👍 1/8 is great for a Caper/ Bird and Trout knife. Also as long as you get the distal taper and thickness behind the edge right, there’s nothing wrong with 1/8 for kitchen knives. Also, love hollow grinds! Everything has its place, depending on the knife, but I have a real soft spot for hollows 👌
@@RedBeardOps Cool👍. If you’re looking for interesting handle patterns, several years ago TuffKnives (Tough Thumbz) on UA-cam did two tutorials on his Anso pattern and his Reptilian pattern. Great looking knife. Do you notice a difference in temper when done between the angle vs on its own on the rack?
Hey Shawn, there shouldn't be any differences. Everything in the oven gets up to temp
@@RedBeardOps thanks for the reply. I wasn’t sure if you would have to leave it longer so the heat would get past the angle and into the blank.
Just beautiful
Thank you! Cheers!
Great knife brother, it really came out beautifully!!
Thank you very much!
I have to say that I find most knife makers like either 5/32 or 3/16 for most general purpose knives, so good recommendation for the subscribers 👍
1/8 is great for a Caper/ Bird and Trout knife. Also as long as you get the distal taper and thickness behind the edge right, there’s nothing wrong with 1/8 for kitchen knives.
Also, love hollow grinds! Everything has its place, depending on the knife, but I have a real soft spot for hollows 👌
Cheers Griffiths, good stuff there. I'm a big fan of a full flat grind on a 1/8'' stock, but this thing turned out great with a hollow!
@@RedBeardOps Cool👍. If you’re looking for interesting handle patterns, several years ago TuffKnives (Tough Thumbz) on UA-cam did two tutorials on his Anso pattern and his Reptilian pattern. I tried posting the link earlier, but for some reason the comment kept being deleted. Anyway if you do an easy UA-cam search on Tough Thumbz Reptilian you’ll find it.
Geoff of ToughKnives is a seriously talented and highly sought after folder maker. Him and Gavko both are two of the original UA-cam knife making channels.
