Make A WAR Knife | My First Hollow Grind | Knife Making

- Is this knife ready for WAR?!? Recently yall gave me some input on three different knife designs. This design was the clear winner! There were many facets of this knife build that were new to me including hollow grinding the bevels and grinding in the clip on the blade. Trying out new techniques in the art of knife making is what makes this craft fun! I hope yall enjoy the build; and if you have any questions please put them in the comments below.

This knife is killer!! Beautiful handle, clip and hollow grind, and stone finish. Love it!
Thank you greatly sir! Always fun to try new techniques out!
@@RedBeardOps Great job! may Ask you what was the tmp you heat the blead for the first time ?

Wow, you are a great presenter. All needed information is clearly and precisely vocalized while showing how to actually do it. It appears you are being spoken to by a Special Ops operator who is as calm as corn flakes and knows axactly what his plans are, improvising where necessary and again clearly explained! Congratulations on a great build and absolutely wonderful video....Thanks
Lol thanks man! #CalmAsCornFlakes over here!
I feel like the lines are actually very traditional and functional. This might be my favorite design of yours yet. Handle looks great too, total workhorse.
Thank you very much! I really like this one too
Всё видео смотрел на одном дыхании , невероятно круто !!!
Появился стимул и вдохновение👍 вы профи 80 уровня👍
Большое Вам спасибо; друг!
U can also use an angle grinder for hollow grinds. ( Just my opinion)
Angle grinders are so versatile!
That is a blade fit for a warrior OR a gentleman, Red! Well done!😊👍

The stonewash on the darkened surface looks so incredible. Putting this in the top 3 of all knife builds I've watched on YT.
Heck yeah Mitch! Thank you so much!
Your videos are SO helpful for a new knife maker such as myself. I really appreciate your clear concise and detailed voice overs that follow along with your builds. The editing is spot on as well, please keep them coming. The knife turned out great, that bowie with a clip has to be my favorite blade design of all time, just such a classic undeniably good looking profile. Thanks!
Thank you greatly Jordan! Really happy you're enjoying the videos.
Nice work 👍
Thank you! Cheers!
Wow! Wow! Wow! Absolutely magnificent!!
Love the confidence to hand hold an almost complete knife and grind those scallops in the handle.
Lol, thanks Chris. I wish I would of done some more layout on that handle! It came out pretty good, but really could have been better.
The shape and proportions, as well as the fit an finish on this knife are fantastic. Well done!
Thank you greatly Michael!

Beautiful knife reminds me of the jeotec knife
I'm interested in the belt sanding system you're using. Plus attachments.
that tumbler is awesome. (PERIOD)
Thanks Joseph!
You nailed it again! I am not a huge fan of g10 myself, but the lines are just superb. Keep em coming!
Thank you greatly sir!
G10 seems to lend itself well to scalloping and lots of contours, a lot of that detail is hard to see in more traditional materials.
I know this is an older video and I don't know if you still want the idea, but if you wanted to get your scallops lined up, why not use an adjustable benchrest in front of your grinder? Something as simple as a barstool with a stack of dinner plates would even work. Make matching scallops on each side, then remove a plate. Make the next pair of matching scallops, remove a plate.
Clearly a stack of known thickness material would be better and a purpose built adjustable benchrest would be best.
Handle looks great
Thanks!
Beautiful job ❤! I’m going to try your lanyard hole idea on the knife I’m in the process of making!
Good luck with your build!
Thanks James, as always, impressive and thoughtful, thorough in your process explanation and demonstration.
Glad it was helpful!
It’s a beauty
Looks really cool! Reminds me of a venomous snake
It came out amazing
Thanks!
Oh man! Your art of making kinfe is absolutely outstanding! Really compliments!! Keep it up!
Thank you very much! Have a great weekend!
Foarte frumos lucrat și explicat. Un adevărat profesionist. Am învățat de la tine foarte multe. Stima pentru munca depusă.
Mulțumesc! Ma bucur ca ti-a placut!
Very pretty. Reminds me of the Becker BK7 only with nicer lines and scales. Top work.
Thank you very much!
I like the water bucket to cool the sparks from the grinding belt.
THanks!
いつ見ても凄いし、完璧🥂
FRIEND THAT KNIFE IS BEAUTIFUL!!!! THATS WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOUR A PERFECTIONIST!!!
Thank you Sir!
HE’LL YEAH BROHER GOBBLESD
I love all of your knife designs and this particular design is my overall favourite. I like the way you make knives and every detail of it. 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Thanks Francisco! I like this one too!
Very nice!!! Great video. Envious of your 2x72! That thing is sweet!
Thanks! I love that guy! Not sure if he's making them anymore.
That's a nice knife. Great work, man. Thanks for taking us through the process.
Thank you!
absolutely beautiful work bro!

Great stuff! I'm getting ready to make my first knife, and have learned so many things from your videos to get me ready for it, I'm excited! Thank you for sharing your knowledge and experience with us so we can learn!
I'm at the tail end of my first knife and am loving it! I used Red Beard's "Your First Knife" knife template and it coming along very nicely. Good luck!
@@thehumblepundit9790 Nice! And thank you!
Awesome guys! Thank you!
Neat job, James.
I'm always impressed at how sharp and crispy your lines and finishes are. Top notch!
Well done on not screwing up the hollow grinds, too!
If any knife has a beard, it's this one!
👊🏻👍🏻
Lol, thank you sir!
Just beautiful
Thank you! Cheers!
Stunning piece of work sir👍
Thank you so much 😀
The stone finishes always look amazing. The color on the scales came out nice as well.
Thank you! Cheers!
Excellent work man.
Much appreciated!
Amigo, disfrute mucho el video, eres un artista de la cuchillería, hermosa pieza.
Felicitaciones desde Ecatepec, México 🇲🇽
¡Muchos gracias! ¡Ten un excelente fin de semana!
Awesome knife build
Whatever tool we have to get the job done is what I believe in using
I think the knife looks great
I would carry it
Thank you!
Beautiful!!!!
Thank you! Cheers!
Excellent work! I have always been too afraid to try a hollow grind.. however, I have made quite a few textured handles... I would try a larger diameter wheel, I typically run a 3/4” or 1” wheel for this operation. Also, I typically grind in the scallops after profiling but before shaping the scales (if that makes sense).
Thanks for the tips!
That's a beautiful knife.
Thanks!
Over the top James! The hollow came out great. You'd think you've been doing them forever and that handle came out killer. Most guys use a rotary tool or dremel. I'm going to have to try using a small wheel on the grinder. It really cmae out nice! Congrats!
Thanks Jim! Glad you enjoyed that one! I really like this design...
VERY NICE
..YOUR A GREAT KNIVES DESIGNER
Thank you very much!
beautiful, only thing to improve would be the steel pins
This one had loveless fasteners :)
Awesome job man! Now that you have done a hollow grind have you ever thought of mimicking a loveless drop point hunter? Hollow grind, tappered tang, bolster, just a beautiful knife. I know that's on the top of my list to try once I get a 2*72.
Man, maybe one day. That's a very impressive blade design for sure. Cheers
Awesome build and wicked knife
Thanks Milan!
That knife looks killer! I may have to try making something similar. Love the stone wash on those tactical knives. And the hollow grind. The OCD part of me wished you could've somehow kept the stone washing on the exposed lanyard portion of the tang.
I feel you sir! It's possible for sure with removable handle scales. Cheers!
Looks like my $500 Winkler knife. So nice 👍
Glad you like it! CHeers
Excellent video. This may be my favorite knife you've made. I always felt like a 2x72 turned horizontal would be very handy!
Thanks Wayne!
Wonderful.
Thank you! Cheers!
well done meistro
Thanks Mik!
You made a knife like a
DRAGON KILLER
A nasty rocking drager
Thanks!
Spectacular piece of work.
Thank you sir!
Fantastic! That's a beast as well as a work of art.
Thank you!
A bit late bit if I am going to put scallops in the handle like that esp with handle material that has many alternating layers I like make it nothing but scallop and do my best to even it up by eye and use a moderate-high grit belt like 240 to do all of it. This will break it up visually and precision is less important since the eye doesn't really focus on how uneven it is since the handle material is many different layers and since it is all scallops there is no flat for a visual reference. It comes out looking good usually.
Thanks for the tips!
I have to say that I find most knife makers like either 5/32 or 3/16 for most general purpose knives, so good recommendation for the subscribers 👍
1/8 is great for a Caper/ Bird and Trout knife. Also as long as you get the distal taper and thickness behind the edge right, there’s nothing wrong with 1/8 for kitchen knives.
Also, love hollow grinds! Everything has its place, depending on the knife, but I have a real soft spot for hollows 👌
Cheers Griffiths, good stuff there. I'm a big fan of a full flat grind on a 1/8'' stock, but this thing turned out great with a hollow!
@@RedBeardOps Cool👍. If you’re looking for interesting handle patterns, several years ago TuffKnives (Tough Thumbz) on UA-cam did two tutorials on his Anso pattern and his Reptilian pattern. I tried posting the link earlier, but for some reason the comment kept being deleted. Anyway if you do an easy UA-cam search on Tough Thumbz Reptilian you’ll find it.
Geoff of ToughKnives is a seriously talented and highly sought after folder maker. Him and Gavko both are two of the original UA-cam knife making channels.
That came out nice! Great work... You really do an awesome job of explaining all the processes!
Thank you! Cheers!
Nice! I CANNOT wait for the day I get a grinder that allows me to start doing hollows! Looks superb!
Thank you! Good luck Blair!
@@RedBeardOps I ave a question before you go sir... I dunno if you're familiar with the EXTREMELY frugal grinding option of the harbor freight 4×36 belt sander... But I was wondering if You thought it might be possible to affix a diy surface grinder(not unlike the older surface grinder I've seen you use in older videos) to a rig like the above mentioned 4×36.
@@blairdiviak1978 Hey Blair, with enough effort anything is possible. I can't say I'm sure though on your grinder.
Really Great Work!
Thank you! Cheers!
Your grind lines are great, very sharp and crisp. My only suggestion would be to make the handle longer to accommodate gloves. Well done.
Thanks for the tip!
I find it easier to do scallops with a dremmel for some reason. I think it’s easier to see what I’m doing. I do love the clip point with the false edge. You’ll see that on most of my knives. 😜
Good tip sir! Yeah, I'm not sure how I feel about them. They don't feel bad in the hand though.
@@RedBeardOps If you put them closer together but only go half-way across the handle and then come from the other direction but offset the width of your scallop, you'll get a cool snakeskin pattern. I've done that on several "tactical" knives. I'm with you on G10.. if I'm not doing wood, it'll be G10. I hate micarta personally and think G10 is a superior product.
@@TyrellKnifeworks That would of been a good look for sure!
Great vid Red..
the design, material selection, finish... one of my favourites of yours so far.. it came out spectacular.
Thank you! Cheers! It was a fun build for sure!
Great job as always James- not too much not to like here. Hollow grinds are addictive- I almost exclusively use them on all builds.
Man it was different for sure! Do you hollow grind thinner stock as well?
@@RedBeardOps I do. Have done .100 on a 10 inch wheel. Bit more care needed for that.
@@NRiggiKnives I bet... I need to get me a 10''.
@@RedBeardOps Yes. Can still do a thinner blade but also gives you the ability to do a wider one without making multi-faceted passes to get the hollow in.
As always, well done, and well explained... Your process is always very detailed!
Thank you! Cheers!
Beautiful
Thank you! Cheers!
Great looking knife. I appreciate the care you put into everything you do. Thanks for the videos

Beautiful, clean and minimal design…well done, lad

I like it a lot.
Thanks Darrell!
Hey Red. An other blade done with patience and care. That's a formatable looking knife! P.S. your voice overs with shop sounds are a pleasant watch and listen. Please don't ever switch to music. Looking forward to the next one.
Thank you greatly Marco. I've been trying to do shop sounds, voice over, and light music behind it all. Hope that's not distracting. Cheers!
@@RedBeardOps no, not distracting at all..that whole video done perfectly. I didn't mean to suggest the light music in the background wasn't working. Lol I was saying don't switch to that techno shit some maker's have blasting. ☺. Bro. Your calm voice over top of the shop sounds was right on the money! The contrast of a calm voice while working steel with 🔥 is perfect. Just my 2 cents, but you seem to have a good thing going. Nice talking with you bro.
Thanks nice work
Glad you enjoyed it!
I’m pretty sure this is one of my favorites. Knice work as usual. Something has to change on my end. I’m still using a chop saw and a hand grinder for stock removal. I have a WEN bandsaw but haven’t tried a blade to cut steel with. Correct me if I’m wrong but I don’t think the WEN is strong enough for steel removal. Keep up the great work and new ideas.
If it's the WEN portaband like mine I bet it will work. Cheers Tim!
@@CamaroZ28Nut3 yes sir,,, it’s a table top and I was pretty sure it wouldn’t work. Was thinking of getting a portaband and a swag table. Thanks brother.
Wow I would love to own this knife!
Thank you sir!

Thank you very much!
Absolutely amazing knife. Love everything about it.

Great vid and Great Blade, really like the look of the finished blade and that scalloping of the handle really brought out the layers. I like my water sharpener as well, not sure why people complain about them.
Thanks MrSoloun! Glad you enjoyed this one.
Beautiful design. It turned out very well there. Keep up the great craftsmanship and hard work my friend. Can't wait to see ur next videos and next blade. Forge On. Keep Making. God Bless.
Thank you very much!
great video! Love the tactical but also rustic look of the blade. It's not just tactical matt black.
Thanks Pim! Glad you liked this one.
goodjob🥂💞
Awesome knife mate
Thanks Daniel!
To fit the fighter and war style and theme you should sand or bead blast the handle to give it a really nice grip and texture since its hard to sand the grooves in the handle. Awesome video!
Good idea Caleb, I need a sand blasting machine now...
It never ends, lol
Great video as always, knife looks beautiful! And thanks for addressing my spine question! 🤜🤛
Cheers Tyler!
