Man, thank you so much for the information that you provide for those of us who need it. I made my first knife by watching your videos and I'm surprised how much I love the finished product. Thank You!!!
I loved your honesty. Yes you can make a knife with cheep tools, yes it will work, yes the feeling of accomplishment is second to none, but to make something truly great it sometimes requires just that step above. That could be time, equipment, skill (from doing/learning) or just a continued love of what your doing and trying to better it and yourself. Either way for me nothing compares to the felling of achievement and the joy I get from making simple knives for my family and friends that I have been able to make from watching people like you. So thank you.
Great job as always James. I had a similar experience when I started making knives- but I purchased everything from Harbor Freight. I made a bunch of blades with minimal equipment- then moved to a 1x30- whatever it takes but the important thing is that is can be done.

What a thorough and comprehensive video. Knife making in new to me and I thoroughly enjoyed this video. I have to say the costing aspect really gave a new dimension to the possible taking up of this hobby. While a lot of people will have some of the tools and some may have all, it shows the potential knife maker that you can start cheaply and progress with better equipment as your skill levels improve too. Great video, thank you.

I cannot begin to express the gratitude for this video! Unfortunately, the "pretty" fence my girl wanted for our new place took priority and that is OK, safety for our pup comes first!! Long story still long, THANK YOU R-B-O ! The very end of the video killed me, thought it came out great but much respect for showing us newbies the realities, pros and cons of knife making in this aspect!!! You are awesome!
I am very much a beginner and really appreciate all the links to other makers and helpful videos that you shared during the video. Thank you for the great content.
One thing that is helpful with the angle grinder: Save worn sanding discs for the edge work. It will be slower, but a little more forgiving. Still must be careful though. Same is true of cut off wheels. I save some that have worn down (smaller radius) to get into tight spots. Dont take them all the way down to the drive-dog of course- they will break apart at some point.
thank you for not doing what a lot of idiots do with angle grinders and recommend gloves, just an FYI for anyone wondering what im talking about, if you wear gloves using a saw, angle grinder, table saw, anything with a circular motion ect. you risk it catching and pulling your hand or fingers into it resulting in losing a appendage or limb depending on the size.
In one of your videos, you use an arbor press to set eyelets in a kydex sheath. I’m looking for a press to do the same type of task. What brand, capacity, etc is yours? Anything that i should look for in particular? Looking at the 1 ton press from Harbor Freight.
A 1 ton should do it. I got mine from my dad, and it's a USECO Model "A". Nothing special man. you're going to have to drill the arbor and table to accept the dies. I have links in this video for the eyelet dies I recommend .... They're awesome. Also make sure you get the good eyelets too or they'll crush. ua-cam.com/video/sYNcViSGzAw/v-deo.html

Cool to see a video like this! I started out with all amazon bought tools and as Walter Sorrells put it I “polished a turd” tools really didn’t last more than a few knives, a few rounds of those tools and wouldn’t you know I’m still a turd polisher😂 getting better though!
Usually Videos talking about simple tools are complete bs. This guy did it right tho, Amazon tools and a torch for edge hardening. Finally I'll be able to heattreat the stuff I make.
I have used Gough's file guide to sharpen knives too using a Smith Tri-hone I had. I removed the stones from the plastic base and glued them to scrap wood so I had a surface to put the hose clamps on while using the full length of the stones.
Thank you sir! I made a good deal of knives on that jig! If you have the patience you can turn out some great products with it. Glad you enjoyed this one, have a great day!
@@RedBeardOps Thank you. I will definitely check it out right away. So far at least I have the steel resembling that of a knife, but it still needs a bit of persuasion before it can call itself a knife 😄
Your filing jig is genius. I’ve done a ton precision file work, and I can’t tell how much time this would have saved me compared to other filing methods I used.
Hey, I typically don't comment or leave reviews. But BRO. What an Excellent video. You showed us how to get into knife making on a budget. The different ways to do things. Sources on techniques other people have done. And you brought science into it to show us the quality and how strong the material or knife you made could hold up to some grueling punishment. Very well done man. Subscribed for sure.
As far as epoxy goes, 5 minute set time epoxy will hold up for a while, but it isn't waterproof and will deteriorate after several years, 60 minute set epoxy is waterproof and wont deteriorate the same way 5 minute will (it can last upwards of 30 years)
Fore sure! G-Flex has a 24hr cure. That stuff is great and long lasting. The CA Rouge is at 60 min and the BSI mid cure is 15 i think. Thanks for your comment sir!
5 minute epoxy has a much lower melting point. It’s great for glueing fishing rod tip guides as you can remove/ reposition the guide using a butane lighter to soften the epoxy. But, use slow set epoxy for scales.
Dude you are cool!!! Not an elitist but a guy who wants others to learn cool stuff that you enjoy. I respect that very much sir. I subbed to you a while back. Have a great day and thanks again.
I'm currently making a knife for a friend using ordinary hand tools and a thought occurred to me. Know the difference between a $50 knife and a $500 knife? About 5 hours of polishing. I don't make a lot of knives and I've never sold one (I manage to give them away) so I'm making him a $50 knife. Thanks for your tutorial, it will definitely help beginning knife makers on a budget. Update: I believe Geough is pronounced "Jeff". The "gh" is a soft "gh" as in "enough". Update to the update: Well I was wrong. I watched Geough's video and it sounded like he said "guff".
PPE: I wear a pair of Noise-canceling ear muff style headphones when i am in my shop (that i actually on amazon) and listen to audiobooks or music as I work
PPE: Short story.... 20 years ago I was in at 1 of the big 3. Back before all this technology so I was fortunate to have that job. When it came to rules/ regulations of course we needed PPE, but no headphones. They provided the ear protection. I was 19 and wanted music but my job more. There was this guy 1 machine over who did wear phones and lost his arm shoulder and bit of his left ear. I learned real smart real quick about the policy protection for our ears not distraction from our jobs. Had to be aware enough to hear the machines when they go off, or back up, or any sound they should not be making. Ready to hit the BIG RED button when needed. Yes I did say when not if. So filing away with a file .... sure have some shop music from a radio. But please don't plug your ears with music to the point you can't hear your equipment. Thanks guys
If you REALLY have a lot of time you could make a knife using only a file, I actually tried it and only got it really roughly shaped it took about 40 hours in total or maybe less but I almost lost my mind.
Interesting and well explained and discussed as always, good stuff. I couldn't help but cringe at the end with the testing hehe. Yea it looked a bit cold when you quenched but that's the limit of that method as you said and the little brick forge will overcome that for very little extra outlay.
Try some charcoal and a fan blower next time 😉 You can use a cheap fan to make a blower.. And some bricks to build a small forge 👍 Appreciate your effort
Great informative video, also good to se someone promoting entry level stuff as opposed to complicated builds with expensive forging/finishing equipment
Black and decker will get the job done but id recommend looking at the drills at harbor freight like bauer or hercules. They are cheap and tough as nails. I’ve personally used my hercules drill to drill through 5/8 inch steel many times and i still have it. It will be so hot its smoking and burning my hand and i just let it cool down and it keeps on going. Some of the tools at harbor freight are awesome.
Red Beard Ops yeah it’s pretty cool I would like to make knives but I just feel like I would waste my money on the tools but how much would a knife like that be worth?
Well done, I think this will be a winner. Great title too, should draw a crowd. Thanks for putting this out. I never made a knife even though, I have most of the tools needed, just not motivated to do so. This video help keep it simple and easy for a guy like me to follow.

Great teaching video again👍 You have definitely given me the confidence to try a few of these techniques before I commit to buying a whole load of forging equipment and tools. Great looking little knife too. Thank you sir. 👍
Worth a look at Aldi or Lidl for a combo disc / belt sander, they often have them there pretty cheap, around 80 pounds, usually equates to dollars roughly. Nice video. Love that jig.

Thanks!! I’m about to start making my first knife and so far your videos have helped me loads. I really Appreciate the hard work you put in!
Hey yeah, Garry. I have a video coming out in about 20 min that you'll love when researching making your first knife. Cheers
@@RedBeardOps Thank you. I will definitely check it out right away. So far at least I have the steel resembling that of a knife, but it still needs a bit of persuasion before it can call itself a knife 😄
I actually watched to see your Beard but man, you put out one fkn good good video!
SUBSCRIBED!
Heck yeah! Thanks man, glad you liked it. Have a great weekend!
Your filing jig is genius. I’ve done a ton precision file work, and I can’t tell how much time this would have saved me compared to other filing methods I used.
It is awesome. Got it from here - Filing Jig - ua-cam.com/video/r9iNDRwwBQQ/v-deo.html
their are guides to make a heat treat oven with a large can, and some fire clay, and a socket for the torch to sit in.
Yep those would be good options for this project. Cheers sir!
Thank you greatly Ryan! Glad you got something out of this one. Cheers!
Hey man, I really appreciate that! Cheers man, thanks for your comment.
Man I'm terrible with names. You're 100% right on the polishing... Teaches for patience for sure.
Gough is pronounced “goff”. (gh as in cough)
cool you didnt need a forge at all. looking into small diy knife making. thanks for this!
PPE: I wear a pair of Noise-canceling ear muff style headphones when i am in my shop (that i actually on amazon) and listen to audiobooks or music as I work
Heck yeah. I love being able to listen to music and podcast while working!
Thanks guys
It’s actually so satisfying to watch filing in bevels
For sure! CHeers man
If you REALLY have a lot of time you could make a knife using only a file, I actually tried it and only got it really roughly shaped it took about 40 hours in total or maybe less but I almost lost my mind.
This is true! And I would lose my mind as well!
Have been in beard since 1976... and ty for the video... so easy to understand
Hey Seth, really happy you enjoyed this video! I was actually born with a beard.
Interesting and well explained and discussed as always, good stuff. I couldn't help but cringe at the end with the testing hehe.
Yea it looked a bit cold when you quenched but that's the limit of that method as you said and the little brick forge will overcome that for very little extra outlay.
Thank you! Yeah, wish I would of bought a couple of small bricks before this project, but hey... part of the learning. Cheers man.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Be extra careful when drilling the tang, one slip and you will have to learn to play the flute.
Have a great day!
Thank you sir! I'm 14 but very very interested in knives camping fishing etc your video helped me a lot! I also love your knife designs. 👍🔪🔪
Very cool! Take your time and be carful. Good luck with your builds
Heed the warnings, tinnitus is a bitch (got some complementary of uncle sam). Great video mate very informative and easy to follow 👍🇺🇸
Thank you sir! Glad you enjoyed it!
Thanks for actually talking and explaining. Every other video I searched about knife making/restoration is some wierd mute ASMR visual. 😆
Thanks for your comment sir!
Most places charge more for a single knife to hear treat than to buy the torch
This is true, good point.
Great video. I’ve made my knives using tools I have laying around at home and love seeing what’s possible on a low budget.
Right on man! Glad you liked this one.
“You could bring it all the way up to a mirror polish if you wanted to...and you’re a masochist” 🤣😂
LOL, the truth! Not my jam for sure!
Hi James, You've inspired me to have a go at this. Thanks for your content, I'm now a subscriber. From Australia.
Awesome! Thank you! Good luck with your build Greg!
Hell... all of my knives are made with cheap Amazon and Harbor Freight tools. Started with just an HF 1x30 and a corded drill.
Awesome man! That's how I started too!
The testing at the end felt like killing puppies. We all got invested in the knife, we gave it a name, then it died.
LOL, sorry about that sir! It's a necessary step though. Breaking knives is part of the game! Glad you enjoyed this one.
@@RedBeardOps Great vid tho, I enjoy your content :)
In all fairness that would have happened to the knife when you started using it anyway.
You've put out a video debunking literally any excuse to not hand forging. Very impressive. Rock on.
Have a great day sir! I like forging too. :)
“Just a little bit of time” (takes 5 hours) just a bit of time a “little bit”
Hey man, that's not much when it comes to making knives! LOL
Red Beard Ops yeah it’s pretty cool I would like to make knives but I just feel like I would waste my money on the tools but how much would a knife like that be worth?
@@masoncragg1902 it would probably cost around 100 dollars to make your first knife if you dont have tools.
Why you only have 43k subs is beyond me. Keep up the good work man. Super informative content.
Thank you very much Steven! Your comment is much appreciated
@@RedBeardOps no thank you. Just ordered a 42x2 and have been watching all your stuff. Take care bud.
So what you're telling me is...I'm going to use alot of sandpaper.
Lol, yes sir! Lots of sand paper for sure.
Well done, I think this will be a winner. Great title too, should draw a crowd. Thanks for putting this out. I never made a knife even though, I have most of the tools needed, just not motivated to do so. This video help keep it simple and easy for a guy like me to follow.
Hey Ken, thanks for that! It's a fun weekend project for sure. Defiantly can test your patience! Hope all is well. Cheers
Next time, are you gonna make a knife with Harbor Freight tools?
Maybe, that's not a bad idea sir!
For making handles I often like using a scroll saw. Just another pretty good option for it.
Good option for sure!
From the thumbnail i expected an Irish accent
LOL, sorry for the disappointment!
I haven`t even seen all of the video but stopped to subscribe. I know a diamond when I see one. Extremely good explaind and prepared.
Thank you for your work. And I like the beard ; )
Heck yeah Oliver, I really appreciate that! Thanks for your comment it means a lot. Hope to see you around the comment section in the future.
@@RedBeardOps I`m not hanging around youtube very often. So it always takes a while. And I think it was the first time I ever commented ever. Subscriber to only five channels. Although I watch sometimes Jimmy Diresta I`not a follower ; )
Your health and Safty is amazing, the beard part is so true. 🤣🤙🏼 thanks for the great video.
one of the best videos so far that I have seen... very detailed and clear
Thank you very much, sir!
i do it the same way! love your content, glad i find you! greetings from my basement gym&workshop
Very nice!
I clamp a sharpened nail down to mark the center line of the edge. May work a little better. I love your improvised rotary sander for the finger well
Cheers Eric
Great teaching video again👍 You have definitely given me the confidence to try a few of these techniques before I commit to buying a whole load of forging equipment and tools. Great looking little knife too. Thank you sir. 👍
Glad you enjoyed it! Cheers
I really apreciate your safety explanation dude.. Thanks, so usefull 100% 👍👍
Happy to help!
Really well presented, and great filming. Quality stuff...thanks...
Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks Neil!
Your a god bro that jig is amazing and definitely something I will use in the future
Glad you like it! Good luck Justin!
I just built a jig earlier today cant wait to make blades wish me luck!!!
Good luck! 🙌
Woah! Right on Jimmy 😂😂 ! I'm glad you are still at it!!!
I was on here catching up on soldering and you came up on my list!!
-Rachel
Hey, thanks! Good hobbies are good to have I guess. Keeps me busy. Hope all is well! 🙌
It was great vid. Don't know what could tick off those 78 people.. Seriously! Enjoyed it.
Thank you very much sir! I don't know either... but you can't make everyone happy I guess! Have a great weekend!
This video reminds me why I like belt sanders.
For sure, Rob! I agree!
Worth a look at Aldi or Lidl for a combo disc / belt sander, they often have them there pretty cheap, around 80 pounds, usually equates to dollars roughly. Nice video. Love that jig.
Thanks for the tip!
