In the old days,, this is how it use to be, and i am very proud of you and your skills. I'm also happy this craft is being carried on by so many new, and very talented people. Good Job!

Or is there a reason to cut it with a hole on both ends and then put fire bricks on the back wall?

Hey there. Since the start of the year (when things went a bit wonky for us all) i've been binge watching knife making videos. There's lots of good videos out there but i find your complete presentation to be very comforting and confidence inspiring. I'm in the process of making my first knife but i have a few questions. 1. Does the plunge line have to be vertical? I've designed my knife to have a forward (tip) leaning plunge line. That can be future me's problem. 2. My knife is a decent size (Not over compensating, Honest). How do you work out how many holes to drill in the tang, to balance the blade to the handle? 3. How much will my beard effect the outcome of the knife?
Heck yeah, thanks man. I'm happy you're getting in the game! 1.) Nope, doesn't have to be vertical at all! Many makers have a forward slant of the plunge line. Most of mine end up that way... I don't think a backwards slant looks good though... just my opinion. 2.) That is a difficult question. Handle material will come into play. Some people like having the knife a little blade heavy and others like more of the weight in the handle. To lighten more than just drilling holes you can "hollow" out the tang with a grinding wheel or skeleton it with a dremal. Lots of options here. Trial and error will likely be your friend. 3.) The beard is actually pretty crucial to success. If you keep a decent beard the process of knife making, cabin building, and weight lifting will be easier for sure. To state it simply, the beard will help with all aspects of life. Cheers man!
Heck yeah Nick, thanks a million for your comment. I hope this video finds some guys who are right there on the fence looking to make a knife... then pushes them over into the garage! Have a great weekend man.

My dad, however, has a whole bunch of metal around. What kind of steel could I use just merely to practice on that I could potentially turn into a knife blade.(if he didn't have 1080) Any stainless he has lying around? Please advise.
If you want to use reclaimed materials you can try to find old saw blades or leaf springs or something like that... hardenable steel. I'd advise getting your hands on 1080. It's reasonably priced.
Awesome work. The minimalist mentality escaped me. I'm currently looking into belt sanders and band saws. Totally going to go for the hand tools to start.
What a wonderful video! Man, this is an awesome, complete, clear instructional video. My 15 year old is showing interest in making a knife, and this seems like exactly the place to start together with tools we have on hand. Thanks for showing some simple alternatives to approach the same step with different tools. This video is inspiring, and makes me feel like I can help him through the process of making his first knife (mine too). Thanks!
This is so cool- I've always wanted to make a knife of my own, I'm going to look into this. I don't have any tools yet, but this seems very approachable and I feel like I could justify a couple of tools
I think it would be. Check out Outdoors55 's mini forge. I think he used a propane torch at one point. It may be slightly under powered. For a very low cost you could make yourself a little propane burner like I did recently in my own "mini forge" build. ua-cam.com/video/lOWbXbBOJhw/v-deo.html
Hi, awesome video, really helpful. I just made myself a furnace like this, but clamped two bricks together and used a hole saw and went in from both ends, the full depth of the holsaw, opened the bricks up and removed the plug.. Then did exactly the same till I met in the middle. Found this way really quick and accurate..

I wish you showed more stuff done on a belt sander instead of angle grinder, hand filing and other things I don't own. Seems like it would go a lot faster if you grind with a jig
Question: I am wanting to make a small pocket knife out of materials I can get around my neighborhood. Is there something you can think of that I can use to make the blade? I thought of using stone, but that seems too difficult. I'm trying to think of some scrap metal I can use. Thanks much!
It's just what I wanted! I need to get an angle grinder and files, and the materials of course. And I want to make it little bit different to yours it's such a good base.
I appreciate that you reply to these comments and I promise I’ll lower the frequency of my questions haha but what numbered bit for 1/4” pins? I drilled 1/4” holes but the pin is very tough to get in the tang without hammering. I could shave down the pins a little, but I don’t want a non symmetrical pin if I do it imperfectly (likely).

Awesome very detailed without being complicated, showed it can be fun while still showing serious skills no matter what your budget
Glad you enjoyed it!
Awesome work. The minimalist mentality escaped me. I'm currently looking into belt sanders and band saws. Totally going to go for the hand tools to start.
Right on! I can't blame you!
WOW! That's killer man, nice work. One of these days when I get some what of a shop, where the tools I need will fit gonna try this out:)
Good luck!
I think the dremel is a total win for every DYIer out there! Great video. Thanks for sharing your skills with us!
Great point!
Well done... Good video. Thank you for not filing backward like I see some folks do. (easiest way to ruin a good file)
Cheers sir!
What a wonderful video! We got a free design, complete instructions in simple clear terms, a "how-to" on building a furnace, material recommendations, tips, tricks and warnings on what to look out for. If there was an Academy Award for How-To UA-cam videos, Red Beard would win it. Can you teach us more about the heating cycles for hardening and tempering. You gave me the courage to make the jump. Thanks!
Heck yeah man, I'm stoked you enjoyed this one! This is my full guide on how to HT 1084 - ua-cam.com/video/TBIiWwawKSY/v-deo.html
Great video! Great instructions! Thank you so much for stripping me of my excuse to say "Oh, I've always wanted to craft my own knife, but don't got that kind of money for fancy tools and forges and anvils and such." No more of that talk. I've had most of these tools the entire time. LET'S GET TO IT!!! Thank you!
Heck yeah man! Good luck with your build sir! You got it
Thx for an epic video. This make me go for a try to make my own knife. like to do stuff in my garage and this make me to see that I don't need expensive tools or machines. great job
Heck yeah, good luck Petter!
@@RedBeardOps keep up the good work:D
So far the best first knife instructional video I’ve seen. Would like to see a video discussing type and thickness of steel and where to buy.
1/8'' thick stock from Alpha Knife Supply is a good start
Yep, you've discovered it.., your supreme niche ~ teaching knife making! I've never watched a better [not even close!] intro to Knife Making 101. Mixing the simple base methods with moderate and "PRO Series" instructionals is Way Awesomeness. Thank YOU! GOD Bless American PATRIOTS..!!!
Thank you greatly Andrew! Glad you enjoyed it!
Thanks!
That's awesome! Good luck Brendan!
@@RedBeardOps What do you recommend for belts for different steps? Assuming you'd use ceramic for knifework?
@@brendan8363 search blade forums for “belt progression” I started a thread on it a while back
I have been making knifes for like half a year and learned a lot from your video Thanks for those informations
Glad to help! Cheers
Best "how-to" video, period. Great job. Love the forge.
Glad you liked it!
First watch, of many to come. You’re informative and clear. Simple, as it should be. Thanks for your hard work!
Thanks Eddie!
Always a treat to watch you make a knife and learn new tips. Thanks and keep up the good work.
Thank you sir! Glad you enjoyed this one!
Awesome build. I have a class coming up in college where we have to make a knife. I might just use this as a template.
You are a true craftsman.
Thank you sir! Good luck with your build!
@@RedBeardOps Rock It
That little wharncliffe blade in a background photo was awesome! 🙌🙌
I still use this guy on my box opening. - - ua-cam.com/video/HAE9V5wu5qA/v-deo.html
This is so cool- I've always wanted to make a knife of my own, I'm going to look into this. I don't have any tools yet, but this seems very approachable and I feel like I could justify a couple of tools
Nice! Good luck with your first build!
would it be possible to use standard propane torch?
I think it would be. Check out Outdoors55 's mini forge. I think he used a propane torch at one point. It may be slightly under powered. For a very low cost you could make yourself a little propane burner like I did recently in my own "mini forge" build. ua-cam.com/video/lOWbXbBOJhw/v-deo.html
@@RedBeardOps Thanks for the reply I watched the build video. It looks great except I am lacking the tools to tap pipes etc. Still an amazing video.
what kind of wheel do you use on the grinder to take the wood down on the handle?
80 grit flap wheel on the angle grinder
Awesome video. This is a hobby that has intimidated me for years. I'm hoping this will help me get over the hump and start trying it out. Thanks
Heck yea! Good luck!
Glad you liked it and glad you found a solution!
that scalloped look is nice. i was cringing at the thought of it at first, but it turned out extremely nice looking!!
Thanks! I kinda like it too. Worth messing around with. I think it would look good with smaller scallops too!
Thank you for a straight forward starting guide. I do want to know if walnut wood would work in the handle as I have a massive hunk of beautiful walnut left over from woodshop due to schools closing my graduating year.
I've never used walnut, so I'm not sure. Some woods need to be stabilized.
@@RedBeardOps Ah well guess ill figure it out one way or the other. Also just found you by this vid and looking at some of your other knifes they are beautiful. Thank you for making vids and helping people like me out! you sir have earned a sub
Your attention in showing multiple ways of accomplishing a step is great. Really well-made video.
I appreciate that! Glad you liked it!
Thank you, your effort in sharing this with us is greatly appreciated. This is so awesome!
Glad you're enjoying the video!
Another excellent video J! Thank you for taking the time to do this!
Heck yeah Jeff! Really glad you took the time to comment and enjoyed this video!
An angle grinder is like an adjustable wrench. Its not exactly the best tool for every job, but can accomplish any job. I subbed to you about 10 months ago, didn't turn on the notifications, and here I am. Remembering you, and got 9ish months worth of videos to catch up on. I've been wanting to make a knife, just to say I've done it. A few more of these videos and I'm going too. Love the videos, keep doing them. You make it look easy, bro.
Thank you greatly, The Bro!! Glad you're enjoying them!
Wow! Thank you for all that hard work. I appreciate custom knives so much more now.
Glad you like them!
Just bought my very first piece of Damascus steel, i will be doing everything by hand, this video gave me some great tips... keep up the great work 💪
Heck yeah! Glad you liked it!
Great tutorial. After repeated viewings I finished adding scales to my purchased Damascus knife. Turned out very well. Thanks for getting me started. Now to move to Christmas gifts.....
Heck yeah Robert! Welcome to the game!
That green handle came out alright . I liked the looks of it.
Thanks!
This vid actually makes me believe I can do this myself...thanks!
Heck yeah Tony! Good luck with your build!
As a new arrival to knife making this is one of the best videos I've seen. Great work and thanks for the inspiration. Stay safe - Steve from the UK
Heck yeah Steve! I really appreciate your comment... it makes these videos worth it. Have a great weekend, sir! Cheers from Texas
Loved this. I've watched many of your videos and love them all. I'm procrastinating about my first build feeling that I'm totally unprepared and incapable, this gives me hope!
Awesome job.
Thankyou
You can do it RIck! Good luck!
@@RedBeardOps thanks Brother Red... You know it.
A question if you don't mind.
I can't afford an anvil, but i've been offered huge slabs or cast or mild steel as a maker do... Which do you think?
Also. I don't have a lathe and don't think I'll ever get one, but I totally loved the restoration vid of your beauty.
Thanks again for all your awesome work and generosity.
Oh... and that little forge and burner... cracking! Building those this weekend.
Oh... and a bevel filling jig and a a...
@@rickstrodder129 Very cool Rick! I think it could potentially get you going, but it will deform. Good anvils have a hardened face.
@@RedBeardOps well, I'm more than a couple of steps away from anything like good, so getting by sounds perfect!
Thanks again .
BTW, can a brother bierdo purchase your knives? All I can find is your merch....
@@rickstrodder129 Hey Rick, when I do have one for sale I put it up on INstagram.... but I don't sell very much
I wish you showed more stuff done on a belt sander instead of angle grinder, hand filing and other things I don't own.
Seems like it would go a lot faster if you grind with a jig
Most of my videos use a belt grinder. In this case I wanted to show people without more expensive tools how to make a knife.
@@RedBeardOps I bought a hf belt 1x30 for the exact purpose of making blades from start to finish. Hopefully I don't need metal files and saws
Question: I am wanting to make a small pocket knife out of materials I can get around my neighborhood. Is there something you can think of that I can use to make the blade? I thought of using stone, but that seems too difficult. I'm trying to think of some scrap metal I can use. Thanks much!
Truck leaf springs, old saw blades, some lawn mower blades... old files. There are a ton of options. Cheers man
@@RedBeardOps Thanks much!!
It's just what I wanted!
I need to get an angle grinder and files, and the materials of course. And I want to make it little bit different to yours it's such a good base.
Good luck Filip! Cheers
This drill chart should help - templatelab.com/tap-drill-chart/
A letter F bit should do it
dude best vid iv seen yet on youtube bro keep it up and thanks for the knife it works great and i always use fast moving tools because i never mess up a project with them.
Thanks man!
The best video for start making my first knfie
Thank you
Glad I could help!

Must have taken a lot of work to make this video, it was excellent. Thank you for your time and effort!

@@RedBeardOps I did very much. How long have you been making knives? Happy New Year
@@Kdubbzism Well I started making knives back in 2005, but had a significant layoff from the hobby. Really got back into it about 3 years ago. Thanks for watching and thanks for your comment! Have a great 2021!
That was a very nice tutorial. I just got an actual belt sander, I am still struggling with the bevels, need more practice. But I think I will use that file trick for the beginning of the bevel.
Thanks for this video.
