Since I'm a green woodworker I didn't do much blacksmithing yet. Although I hope to start blacksmithing and be able to forge my own tools together with a friend of mine who has a coal forge.
Thx alot for the great videos and inspiration Nils!
I hope to visit Sweden next summer to be able to visit other craftspeople and maybe have time to follow some courses.
      Keep up the great work!

I'm also starting out and am in need of a nice hammer like this one! Thanks for all the great videos you have made and I really like the voice over commentary on this one. I'm living not too far away from you and I'd love to come by and visit your shop some day. I hope that I eventually have enough skill to take a one-on-one course with you and be able to get the most out of it.

Don't sweat the beginer dude. I been at this for decades and my "daily driver" hammer is a 900g(ish) crosspeen too. sure i got lighter one and heavier ones dependong on the work... but this type and size hammer been made on this vid is 100% the work horse of my career, cant go wrong with it from beginner to pro my dude.

HI Folks, I have watched Black Bear forge over the years and more or less revived my interest in Blacksmithing. I worked With Bob Wilson at the Grange Smithy Nr Dundee. I have used alll the skills Bob showed me as a teenager And at 75 years I feel I have reached a proficient level in Blacksmithing, It is a Skill where you are always learning.
I have moved on to Making horseshoes now for the local horse owners. So thanks for the video on the Cross peen Hammer, Time to get some tool steel and have a go. Thanks for the tutorial.. Tom in Ayr Scotland.

I have been using hardware store hammers up to this point, and they work ok, but this one is very nice. It would be a very welcome addition as my first forging hammer made by a fellow smith. I haven't had the courage (or skills) to attempt making one myself, but it is in my sights as I make more tooling. I really like that style of punch you used. I will try to make one soon.

The hatchet side is sharp on two sides and multiple holes on the one side for measuring. Be a challenge for you but bet you would have fun doing it. Also it will add to your tool chest.

To me, punching the eye is by far the hardest part...does anyone else agree? Nils makes it look so easy!

    • @fredfchopin
      @fredfchopin 19 днів тому

Punching it isn't all that terrible, especially with a power hammer or even a treadle hammer. It's drifting the eye that's difficult, since that's where all the stuff can go wrong and you have to fix it. Doesn't take much for the eye to become crooked or off-center in some way, and if it's off center then it's tough to heat only one side of the eye without a coal forge.

Beautiful work. I love watching your videos. I have not tried making my own hammer yet, but maybe one day. Right now I'm just using a hardware store hammer, but it gets the job done

Fantastic hammer, great video.....as a volunteer at a tiny forge museum, quality tools are in short supply, so my hammer is always in toolless youngsters' hands!

I love watching these, especially with the explanation.
I don't need a smithing hammer, and don't have space for one. Give it to someone else; I'm commenting to show engagement.

Amazing work and great info as always Nils! Just starting in the world of blacksmithing but your videos are great resources to have. A hammer like that would definitely be a game changer from my $25 Amazon special 😂

I have never used a hammer of that kind and it would be a honor to be considered for the giveaway draw. Your hand forging skills keep impressing me every time. Also, the poster of Arnold in the background always gets me. So awesome!!

You are such an inspiration Nils! I am getting into Scandinavian axe making thanks to you and would love to use a hammer forged by you to make them!

Thank you for all your efforts. Your videos are well done. I have yet to try a hammer or an axe. I think it is anxiety over messing up the eye.
Thank you for doing these and sharing your skills, talents and abilities with us. USA with Scandinavian roots. 🧙🏻‍♂️💕

Man, you should only know how many eye's I have messed up.
Dont worry, just do it :)

Very nice work. I've forged 5 hammers with similar techniques, but they certainly did not turn out nearly as well. May be time to revisit hammer forging!

Personally find the spring fullers work great to moving the larger stock thickness when making hammers, the only tricky part is getting the set down lined up, but patience is part of the work.. great video 🍻🍻

Yes! focus and patience. speed comes later :)
