I remember when a "80" series cards were $500 and would be a 384 bit bus.
Yeah now Nvidia got idiots paying $1000 and arguing in these comment sections that its good value for what is essentially a 70 class card.

The fact that Nvidia would launch and entire line of products instead of discounting their existing GPUs is awful. They can anchor their prices all they want, my budget won't change and my wallet will remain untouched.
Look up the latest quarterly earnings report and you get your answer on why they can do it.
I agree that they won't get my money right now. I paid $960 for a 3080 in Jan. 2021 at Best Buy. I won't consider another high priced GPU again. I will wring every last ounce of life from this GPU.

I made that mistake. Got a 4070ti super and there’s only 3 drivers that have ever dropped for them and had nothing but issues. Most likely due to the architecture change. Returned and snagged a 4080s.

Coming from a 1070 and waiting on my 4070 super and rest of my components for my new build and I will be happy with 1440 gaming for several years until hopefully 4k gaming becomes more normalized and less expensive.

Hey Mr. Paul, in the future would you include peak and average operating frequency for the cards? Im guessing you were right that your 4080 FE was clocking higher but im really curious by how much. Btw, you aint gotta or anything but your timespy test results should have the frequency info. Would be dope if you could post that.
Come to Australia, Paul, where you'll be able to buy a 2% on average faster RTX 4080 Super for a 4% price increase ($1870 AUD) over the base model RTX 4080 that was already retailing for $1800 a couple days before Nvidia's CES announcement. Now that's value! Thanks Jensen! What a legend! 👍 PS: don't be a "Super" sucker, and just buy an on sale 4080 for $1500-1600, so you can still get the majority of that "discount" we're supposed to get, like I did. 🙂

I'd argue that $1,499 is too much at this point. If it was that price at launch i might have considered. It was $1,499 for 3 days before it sold out. That just tells you it was still a hard sell at that price lol. That or people release the super wasn't any better after the reviews and came to their senses and got the 4080 on sale instead. I've waited this long though, it would have to under $1,299 or less for me to be interested. Waiting for next gen instead. If the 5080 is priced right. Otherwise I'll get a 4080 second hand for half of what it is now lol
@@PCbenchmarktime yeah, I wouldn't argue with you on that either. But it is the best we got for that performance/price bracket, for people that want to play games with full ray tracing and need the better support that Nvidia provides when it comes to more niche things like hardware eye tracking in high end VR, which is all very important to me. I got burnt hard on the 3090, even after selling it months before the next gen was announced, and so, I have now been waiting for 18 months without a GPU in my sim rig, until a moment just like this past week, where the 4080 finally becomes viable/reasonable in the price to performance category, when compared to the performace tiers above and below it (4070 Ti (not enough VRAM) & 4090 (too expensive)). So yeah, it was either 4080 now, or potentially wait another 1-2yrs for 50 series. No thank you. I got games and sim racing to play in 2024! haha. But each to there own. 🙂
This and the other supers in this series are proving that the bus is saturated.

It depends on country/store.
In Romania, I was lucky enough to grab a Gigabyte RTX 4080 SUPER WINDFORCE at slightly above MSRP, for 955 EUR / 1034 USD (19% VAT excluded). I like this card because the 12 VHPWR connector is on the small side of the PCB, causing no interference with the side panel.
There were 4 pieces available when I started the order, and by the time I finished, it went out of stock.
Now the cheapest 4080 Super on the same store costs 1033 EUR / 1119 USD without the 19% VAT.
4080 super 1113eur vs 4080 1166eur in Czech republic
4080s windforce and tuf @ 1150€ with 24% VAT here in finland. Most ran out of stock though. got myself a suprim for 1299€.
Prices may start making sense around April. It's when the market usually starts to cool down before summer. Lowest prices being around mid August. But then the longer it takes, the less sense it makes to buy one at all. RTX 50 isn't that far away either. -Grabs popcorn

The 4000 series as a whole has been a huge disappointment, especially from a pricing standpoint. The performance gains do not justify the hikes.
great video as always and thanks for the review...myself i am in need of an update ...but i have an rx-580 8gb that still holds on and breaths just enough to not justify getting any of these absurd priced cards.i game at 1440p at low settings-there is no comparison ofc to these newer generation cards but still .since you mentioned mists of pandaria i would love if you could add in any of your tests world of warcraft a so beloved game

Only nvidia shop is down, but major shops have loads aib available and some with the same price as FE. Best bet i think is wait a bit more to see some decreasing of the 4080

Thanks, Paul. That's a lot of hard work there. It's very telling how often the 1% lows of the RTX 4090 near or even exceed the average FPS of the 4080 & 4080 Ti. With such high frame rates the 1% lows are just as - or even more - important than the average frame rate. 0.1% lows would have been very useful. Stutters are really bad.
I must take issue with your $2000 pricing of the RTX 4090. The price hike is over. Over here the price, including 20% tax, is under £1600, or £1333 ex tax which translates to about US$1600 and that would give an adjusted cost per frame of $11.23 at 4k (I didn't calculate the rest). I wonder how things look if you do that calculation on 1% lows?
For me, and granted that I purchased one on launch day, the RTX 4090 is still the card that gives the most value. If you can afford it. And that's a shame.
Germany is the same. The cheapest 4090 I can find here is 1820€, with the cheapest 4080 Super being 1110€. Whereas in the chart, the 4090 is exactly twice as expensive, it's only 1.64 times as expensive in reality. Using these numbers, the cost per frame would be 10.60€ and 12.78€, respectively. I can't be bothered to convert into US dollars as it doesn't make a difference when it comes to their relative values.
Also, there are 7900 XTX for 950€ available here, making it ~14.5% cheaper than the 4080 Super instead of the 5% cheaper in the chart.
Do these new cards have the new 2x6 power adaptor or the original 12V Fire hazzard one? Everyone keeps says 12V adaptor, which is quite surprising considering the thousands of carrd impacted by the issue
Nice video man but I wish you would have done some comparisons to the 30-series cards as most people like me would like to see if perhaps the upgrade from my 3080ti would be worth it. I don’t think too many people are looking to upgrade within the same generation.

Having a well-loved pair of 1080ti's in SLI on x99, I contentedly skipped the 20's & 30's, but by the 40's launch I was getting pretty itchy despite being disgusted by Nvidia's tactics. Out of spite I set a stock MSRP $1000 price notification for a very particular 7900 XTX flagship AIB thinking yeah right, never gonna happen. Then not even 30 days later it did, I jumped ship, went all in, and it just might be the best "gaming" decision I've ever made. Nvidia, Jensen, and even RT can kiss my entire butt.... Completely happy with team red's products & platforms (except for maybe Adrenaline :P) and have gotten very comfortable with them; since Nvidia has gone full vile mega-corp, and Intel keeps phoning it in (still watching ARC though), I don't see any reason to change.
RTX 4080 Super has 5% more CUDA, Tensor, and RT cores. We all knew this like two weeks ago when the specs were released on all the new GPUs. No idea what people expected knowing this info.
We expected at least 5% across the board, we did not get even that... which seems to be common theme for "Super" cards
@@henson2k I personally don't care about these founders cards. Always the limiting factor. If there are no changes between higher tier models against same cooling variants, then maybe. If there are 5% more CUDA, Tensor, and RT cores + memory speed upgrade (everything else the same inc core clocks), the difference should be around 5%.
Path tracing scenarios maybe more, or less... Depends on how the AI core count affect the PT fps. Also, waiting on DLDSR + DLSS test on higher resolutions.
@@Monsux The only explanation I have Nvidia has switched to a cheaper/worse components (memory?) in Super cards.
@@henson2k No idea... It can be almost anything. GPU bios, Cooling, OC limits, memory, memory cooling (pads). Just lower quality VRAM thermal pads can increase massively memory temps (my last Asus model). That GPU had insane VRAM OC potential, but OG thermal pads destroyed the memory performance.
I find it weird that Paul didn't see a small increase coming when that information has been available for months.

@@josephmccartney5951 that's just dead wrong. Nvidia has a total control of the market and history of the last few years has shown them setting higher prices and the cards still sell. They make so much money doing AI stuff for big corporate clients that they don't care about losing a few "regular gamer" customers. In fact, they don't want us to have our own gpus at all in a few years, they want to sell us Geforce Link or whatever their game streaming subscription is called.
If I didn't need a card right now... I'd probably wait a year too. But... I guess, not bad at $999. I feel like everyone still has a bad taste in their mouth from the unreasonable pricing of the original 4080 launch. Original pricing missed the mark so badly.

It's an amazing card, using previous cards, 2080ti, 3090 ti, it's fast and a 1000 isn't bad. It's like 30% faster than my 3090.

I've always told people who don't care about raytracing, upscaling and hdr for streaming videos, 3D rendering and VR encoding to go with AMD to save a few bucks.
AMD is for those who only care about price for the basic raster. You did good 👍
I will say I'm surprised at how much the 7900XTX has improved. Initially it was neck and neck in non RT with the 4080 but it seems that drivers improved the cards performance a ton. If I were to buy now I would probably go with a 7900XTX over a 4080 shame that they launched the card without mature drivers cuz it was offputting to a lot of people like myself.
@@23kendrell Makes sense. I'm keeping an eye on the big remaster effort with the RTX tools Nvidia released for mod creators. I want to play HL2 remastered with ray tracing, tomb raider 1 with RT etc. But again, we're talking about potential stuff. Could be significant in a year or two though what gets released with the RTX toolkit.

thnx for a great review and over all test of the current cards and prices including most bang for the $! nVidia needs to really shape up and get their prices adjusted to the market again, don't see anyone buying cards priced like they were in the shortage crisis of 2021... sticking with my 3070Ti for another while, and most likely wont upgrade the whole system until everything runs PCIe 5.0.

i don't know if it's retracted at all. the 4080 is much less of a "monster" today than it was at launch. so, comparatively, it's probably an ever worse launch.

Thank you for testing in Microsoft Flight Simulator, that's my primary use case. But I don't see it CPU limited at 2K resolution, perhaps something else eating resources.

My local Microcenter has 6950 XT for $550 and it makes it really hard to consider the 7800 XT or 4070 Super.
If you get 6950 Xt make sure to get atleast a 850w psu

Need help guys, I’m planning to upgrade my pc from a GTX 1080 but I’m torn between rtx 4070ti super and 4080 super, the graph shows that the 4070ti super seems to be the better bet, am I right in thinking this? Or should I shell out a bit more and get the 4080 super?
Your takes are always straight to the point. You're the best, Paul. Personally, I'm sticking to the 3070 until I learn the recommended requirements for GTA IV. All the games I'm playing are running great.
4070 or 4070ti should be more than enough for gta 6 at high settings decent fps.
They should have bumped the 4080 Super VRAM to 20 GB
I swear people say this that don't know how rendering pipelines work. More VRAM would do very little for performance which is why AMD isn't blowing nvidias cards out of the water. Raw raster might be a bit better, but in 2024 you're a dingus if you're trying to play modern games with no upscaling.

How exactly is it possible that the Super card gets less frames than the regular 4080? Is something maybe wrong with your benchmarking? HW Unboxed didn't find this at all.
Thanks Paul! 4070 at 600 is by far the most interesting card, but I still am not sure its enough to get me to actually purchase it. Based on your review the 4080 super is really disappointing, I was hoping for something that slotted between the 4080 and 4090 for $1000, but it turns out its basically the same as a 4080 non super performance wise based on your analysis.
These cards still just need to sit on shelves until these companies come back to reality with pricing.
they sold out almost instantly this morning, 10's of thousands of cards sold immediately.

This is stupid as all we going to do by buying these expensive cards is that they can double the price in the future and then they will become unaffordable and kill the pc gaming.
AMD will save you by dropping the proce of the XTX from $999 to $500.

I think it's strange that you use 1920x1080 in the test for with 4080 super because it depends a lot on how fast your cpu is in that resolution with more powerful graphics cards
Could any of those minor performance differences between the 4080 and 4080 Super be caused by the reviewer drivers? And then with the newer, better optimized drivers the difference between them would be larger, i.e., the 4080 Super is faster in all tests?

I would like to see a video editor do a video on what GPU etc they like. Not everyone is just gaming with these higher end GPUs.
A ton of work with all of the cards, Appreciate your dedication to detail and doing the entire suite of card Paul. I went from a 3080Ti to the 4090 when I did my 13900KS build, but I would have happily went with the black 4080 Super. I really hate how Nvidia puts the high end cards out first so they have you over a barrel of you can't or don't want to wait.
I dont get how average 4k Raster performance is the same as average 4k RT performance? is it because when there's RT , a DLSS is used? If yes, DLSS set to what? Peformance?

So is it a better option at the moment get a 4070 Ti Super instead of this 4080 Super for play at 1440 with RT? The performances are not so different between the two GPUs...Eventually with a mild overclock of the $070 Ti Super the difference in performances could be reduced?
It depends on what games. The 4070 TI Super is a great 1440p RT card, you can think of the 4080 Super as a full on 4k RT card or it gives you extra FPS for 1440p.
It also depends on if you plan on buying again for the 5000 or 6000 series or later. If earlier (6000 or earlier), the TI will serve you the whole way.
@@ehenningsenThank you for the help. My idea is to grab a mid range rtx and save some money until the 5000 series will be on the market. I will use this 4070 Ti Super also for some preview 3d rendering and the 16gb are better than the 12gb of the 4070 Super (I was using a 3090 and the performance are a little less than the 4070 To Super).
My aim is to play Cyberpunk with RT or Path Tracing, the Witcher 3 Rt, Stanfield...
Paul includes the 7900xtx since that's what it should be compared to. Linus's team really didn't think it was necessary for their entire super series roundup which is hilarious. Idk how their mistakes are so common. Luckily gamersnexus called them out so we are getting less than we otherwise would've.
back in june i almost a 4080 for 1300 them got a 7900xt for only £700 on offer. well before the price drop
