More Price Cut Than Upgrade: Nvidia GeForce RTX 4080 Super Review - Is The Price Finally Right?

  • The end of the Super refresh is upon us with the arrival of the RTX 4080 Super. Minor spec bumps and a new paint job - along with minuscule performance differences - are all that separate Super and non-Super. So it's all about value. Is a $200 price-cut good enough? And is there a threshold point for ultra high-end 4K gaming - and if so, do the RTX 4080 and 4080 Super meet it?
NOTE: At the 19:15 point, the caption says FSR/DLSS performance, but the metrics are indeed from quality mode as the VO says.

This is good, but without power usage numbers is not accurate. Keep in mind 4080 has 40 to 80 watts less than 7900XTX and over 150watt more efficient than 4090. So cost per frame figures will be actually in 4080 favour when electricity cost is added . Here in UK it matters a lot when el prices have risen drastically.

That 384bit bus and extra 6K cores just go so hard (especially at 4K), as well as probably the more unconstrained power. Damn glad I got mine instead of the 4080S.

It's more expensive than the 4080 ever was in Australia. It's so stupid.

  • @romxxii
    @romxxii 4 місяці тому +92

That's still $300 bucks over the 3080 launch price. And 3080s currently cost about $800 bucks at Newegg at the cheapest. So it's less a question of "is the price cut enough for gamers" but "is a $200-$300 price increase for the next generation worth it?"
Because i think the people who have the money to burn already bought 4090s, like myself.

    • @timotmon

@@HunterTracks Another way to look at it is that typically a next gen card card should perform as well as one tier slower than the previous gen. For ex. a 4070 should be as fast as a 3080. However, the 4080 is way more powerful than both the 3090 AND the 3090 ti and doing it much more efficiently. People who were fine paying $1000 for a 2080ti, 3080ti are having no issues paying the same for a 4080.

It'll take at least 1 more console generation before RT becomes an absolute requirement in AAA games, i.e. you absolutely cannot even launch the game without an RT capable card. By then both AMD and Nvidia should have cards that offer acceptable RT performance without costing $1k+...

You may as well quit PC gaming for good then--im serious. If you think Nvidia will ever drop prices to that level again, you are ignoring reality and living in fantasy. Nvidia has overcharged for these cards and everyone has bought them, the 4080 Super is sold out everywhere and the 4090 is so popular it's still selling for 2x it's price.
Face it, the reasonable prices you want are gone for good. Nvidia will not reduce inflated prices when people are still buying them like hot cakes. And since people will continue to buy them, the price will only keep increasing.
As such, if you truly refuse to pay anything more than old outdated pricing, you should just quit pc gaming and switch to consoles where your price range will stay much more sane and stable

This has become the absolute high end sweet spot overall - I would choose it over a 7900 due to DLSS3 and FG any day.
Not to mention G-Sync works so much better with Nvidia's front end implementation vs Freesync.
So I am glad I waited to build my desktop as this is the card I will get, mated with the 14700KS.
Just choosing a cooler and motherboard which has been a daunting decision. So many options.
Edit, just to put it in perspective, my up coming rig has a 1500VA UPS and an 1000 watt Gold PSU, with 14700K and 4080s when I find one in Australia, the GPU is what I am waiting for now.. But I am a 1440P gamer on a 1440P OLED Adaptive Sync display. I'd have to get a better UPS and spend a thousand bucks more to get a 4090 not to mention the extra power draw, so my comment is mostly aimed for 1440P ultra gaming for now and the foreseeable future.
For 4K , even with DLSS, the 4090 is a much better bet, but I will reevaluate all this in a couple years.

It does. Just at a slower rate

I never understood this idea that value per dollar should increase for lower end products. I understand consumers on a budget would prefer this to be the case but isn't Nvidia interested in consumers buying more expensive products? If one sees that more expensive product is not only superior but also better value per dollar they are more likely to buy it instead of cheaper options, no?

Goes to show ps5 and series x came out way way too early. Barely any “next gen” games STILL. They could have just waited a few years and actually made them powerful and since games aren’t even really coming out yet anyways they definitely should have waited.

I would never put my money to anything else then founders edition on this card. Its truly not even close the design of partner models.

There are aib models with the same price as FE edition. Plenty stock too. Just too expensive for people to buy. Most allr stuck and fucked with the 3080's and trying to use it till it cannot cope.

wake me up when prices really drop and they releasae something truly new, and not the same performance for the same price. prices are faaaar too high across all GPU's these days.
pure black looks like pure cheap plastic lol

I think the price is 100 USD too high if it came on the market over a year ago. But getting a "super" card is usually not a good idea. Better get a real next gen card when it comes out.

@@robertkorth2911 Another interesting factor is that in games without RT, both cards reach very high frame rates. Games with heavy RT are the only places where the performance difference actually impacts the subjective experience. But yeah, the upscaling quality is still an underrated upside of Nvidia cards. With 4k DLSS quality often looking better than native TAA, it means that AMD cards flat out don't have access to the best image quality - not even at a cost of massively lower performance (caused by running native res + TAA instead of FSR2/DLSS Quality).

I think the reason Nvidia has kept such a gap between the 4080's to 4090 is that they've envisioned scenarios where some people will actually buy two 40-series cards during this generation.
They prey on FOMO and want to have the "unicorn card" that *feels* like a generational leap versus the rest of the 40-series lineup. Nvidia have gone out of their way to precisely engineer
    what's effectively a 4070ti 16gb and a 4080 Super that appears upgraded on paper.
