The MSI RTX 4080 Super 16GB Expert is a newly-designed partner card built around NVIDIA's RTX 4080 Super GPU, featuring an aluminum alloy housing and push-pull fan design inspired by the Founders Edition cards. But is it worth the markup from $1000 to $1150? Here's my full review and benchmarks.

"Hey, I got a RTX 4080 Super!"
"Same here! I got the MSI Expert."
"Really? How much did that cost?"
"$1150."
"Mine was $1000. How does it perform?"
"It looks cool."
4080 super fe is just better in everyway imo. Cheaper, better looking, better cooling and same performance.
I can already see that based upon current gen pricing and the scalpers, I'm a have to buy the 4000 series cards when the 5000 series cards drop.
It honestly looks cool
Everyone knows you don't pay for board partner cards for performance. It's 100% aesthetics.
“I just paid $1000 to get a bit more frames from games I waste thousands of hours playing. Doctor says I’ve got onset diabetes and women are disgusted by me, but my new GPU shroud makes up for it!”
I hope they continue this EXPERT line into the launch of the 5000 series. I'd pick up a 5080 or 5090 in this design if an FE wasn't available
That’s a gorgeous GPU design. The most unique one that I have seen so far. It deserves to be mounted vertically to be shown off.
Would’ve gotten it if it were white or black, but that pewter was a selfish color choice. Got a FE instead
I don't do Nvidia and I even think it looks good too..
this. It is a solid statement of some sort. Feels like what a Metal Gear Solid licensed card would look like or that it would not have been out of place in the old military themed asus fx 990 sabertooth motherboard from the AM3 chipset@@marcasswellbmd6922
ever seen a founder's edition?
You like cheese graters?
Nice that someone is putting a bit of work into making sure the "bottom" (top) of the card looks nice.
The disappointment I feel every single time that I look at my GPU in its case... it feels like I'm always looking at it wrong.
Damn, how empty is your life
@@JohnSmith-op7ls Well I stare at my GPU for a couple of hours every afternoon, then put food in my family’s feed trough before resuming for another solid five hours. I’d say that’s a pretty full life. 🤷🏾♂️
@@casualnerdjason6678 Feel for ya
@@casualnerdjason6678 Vertical mounts bro, they are amazing
I received my Expert card February 1st from Newegg and it reached a clock of 3080mhz on LV and stock cooler in vertical mount. Vertical mount on these cards blesses your MB with great air flow, and usually remains below 70c. Good luck!
Great information and solid review. I would recommend throwing in a previous gen card, probably the 3080 in for a reference point.
That new design looks pretty damn nice!
I disagree.
@@hendrik3076thank you for sharing that🤠
Lovely looking card. Stay safe with the weather my guy
Thank you once again for keeping Microsoft Flight Simulator in your game test line up! Much appreciated!
Why? It doesn't need no fucking 4080 super nor is it insanely graphically intensive or even close.
@@dukedase7 it does, actually, esp if you run multi screen. Plus the biggest demand is vram, so I will take what I can thanks
Great video, BUT PLEASE do a follow up on the $10,000 pc for Joe!!! Did you get it fixed??????
if the clock speeds are higher on the expert, isn't cooling at the same temperature as the FE at base clock a good thing? or am i missing something here
Thanks, Paul! The design reminds me of the GTX 480!
Got any news on when the next AMD gpu series is coming out?
No Bios switch???
then i go for the msi slim version....
I've just fitted one to replace an ageing EVGA 1070 FTW from 2017 to go with my new 32" Samsung Odyssey7 monitor, wow what a difference.
the only downside was having to spend another £50 odd quid on new cables (1x 12vhpwr side mounting cable & 3x 30cm PCIe cables).
I like the look of the card other than the angle/orientation of the grill. Also looks like it's choking airflow.
Paul did you list your test rig specs? cpu; ram; hd...sorry cant find it
How are you liking WFH? cheers.
I had really hoped the cooling would be more effective, allowing a bit better over clock.
Thank you so much for this Paul!!!
When i saw that design at CES:
1. I was happy to see a new design for a cooler, from anyone!!
2. I was curious how it performed.
Caffeinator out.
No disassembly to have a closer look at the coolers??
Did you get the latest VBIOS from MSI?
Hi, can you tell me if the 4080 super inno3d ichill x3 is good? Thank you for your reply
trying to flip my current setup so I can build a 4080 Super build, im wanting a 4080 Super FE or the MSI Expert 4080 Super, as those 2 cards appeal to me the most atm :) gg great vid :)
It’s refreshing to see one oem making a new design, especially since the 40-series cooler designs really were lacking aesthetically compared to the 20 and 30 series generations. Perhaps with exception of ZOTAC, whose curvy coolers actually looked fresh.
no RGB ? i have now the 3080 suprim-X and i love the RGB details
I think I need to upgrade my 3600 and 3060 12gb for game dev should I go to a 5900x and a 7800xt or upgrade to AM5 and get a new gpu later?
Reply
My concern is I wanna run an air cooler and im slightly concerned the exhausted hot air will affect air flow for a tower. So I guess this is best paired with an AIO?
Temp seems higher than expected. Are you certain it wasn't OC'ed?
Mine just arrived yesterday pairing it with ryzen 9 7900x and 64gb ddr5 6400mhz ram and 1200watt psu gonna be rebuilt tomm
480 throw back design? Kind of love it.
Just so happened that I watched this late at night while tired.
The tunes out me to sleep rather quickly. So I missed the video.
Will rewatch later when not so tired.
Looking upgrade my system as it is from my 2080 and so either a 4070 super or the 4080 super it'd be a major upgrade what I have
I had this paused at 1:59 and could have sworn you were telling me these are NOT the droids I'm looking for.
I have been trying for over a year to get a 4080 founders edition but haven’t had any luck, and now I am trying to get a 4080 super founders edition but I just can’t. I really want a 4080 super founders edition, but are really hard to get. :(
2:45
what so the advertised boost clock off 2505 MHz (and 2550) means nothing. wtf.
Still happy I got my 7900xtx way back. It’s still quite good rt if you want that, but I’m any other case basically wipes the floor with anything but the 4090. Pretty insane value to have a card that is often cheaper than even the 4080 super but has raster and vram at just under a 4090 level.
Is it a (half) blower? It seems Paul is showing it from every side other than the back - why, why?
what about teardown for repasting ?
FW's are pretty bad on that
Looks awesome, does it look +$150 over the msrp with worse cooler?????
8:47 ain’t the coolers it’s bumped a bit, therefore runs slightly warmer hence the temp
how about hot spot temps? memory temps? vrm probably ok but still interesting. How does the cooler perform without the plastic intake shroud on the bottom?
I commented with my findings on this exact card
“For anyone who is interested in purchasing this card. Hotspot temps sit at around 80 max, Memory temps haven't gone higher than 72 degrees for me.
Definitely a great design.”
I want to see dual bios on more graphics cards as a safety net more than anything, I’ve had a few cards bios brick all of a sudden
I don't know why but I can't get rid of the cheese grater image in my head after seeing this
Ah fudge. Now you've ruined it for me. Why you gotta say that?
@@gallieon8718 yup right after I bought the thing:( got a killer $800 deal tho
How about a Superman theme build?..could be fun with the color scheme and name theme colors in rgb and color cables.
Hi Paul your window 11 version still 22H2 I think you should have window up to date
How many frames more, makes spending more money for almost the same thing worth it?
Normally when you go add more cores you lose some speed due to higher thermal concentration in the silicon.
I have a tuf and its a shame you vant set the fans lower then 30% because they never go above and the card has enough headroom to go lower rpm making it as good as Silent
Can we get a thumbscrew ash tray or cigar cutter?
Love the look of this card
I think the price cut is great and all, but it looks like the scalpers on Ebay have them, so it’s much more expensive than the regular card
If the Founder's Edition is the classic version, this is what happens when a very good company redoes the body while keeping the car's heart. It's gorgeous for an air cooled card. The Suprim is the best looking card of this generation but this is a VERY close second.
nah, the proarts always looks the best
@@henryt9731eh not if you mount them normally i don't think the tops of them look good at all, fan side yes
Maybe lopping off two power stages had an effect on SuperFE
Have an MSI Suprim X 4080 and appears to clock at 2820mhz (without overclocking) at around 57 degrees. I was expecting the expert cooler to perform a lot better than what it does.
Seems like 4080’s are better to push hard than super variant so far.
Still early though.
4080 has fewer CUDA cores than the 4080 super.
I really wanted this, but it wasn't available on the launch here where I live, so I went with an Asus TUF RTX 4080S for a nice msrp.
I have an MSI RX 5700 EVOKE O.C and it's also completely metal with a very stylish design... It was also *the cheapest* RX 5700 around a few months after launch 🤔
The DIY remount card. Cheap as initial batch had cooler/pad issues? Looked cool though, nice to see different colour shrouds now and again
5:02 THANK YOU!
(I have 800 hours in Flight Sim.)
It's hard to beat the looks of the new Super series cards - that stealthy clean/sophisticated looking matte black finish. I already have an RTX 3080 but had to pick up an RTX 4070 Super after seeing how cool it looks.
Why a 4070 over 4080, the 3080 is just as fast as 4070s
hey look, someone included the 7900XTX and 4090FE for comparison. Thanks Paul
2:50 nice row there explaining if it is a "Ti" or "Super" 👍
it would be 1000 times better if the row stated "is made of mashed potatoes" and they are all just x, x, x, x...
I think I’m finally decided on the 4080 super fe for my new itx build. Last time I built a system Paul was still at the height of his fame with Newegg 😊
Me too, back in 2013-so much nostalgia 🤩
It does look really nice, but the added cost and other properties like noise performance shown here make it a bit of an odd choice for people into that range of card.
I have only ever seen an FE 4090 in video. Have to see the unicorn in the wild.
Dual bios switches should be on the expansion slot mounts (don't think that's the right name, but where the HDMI/DP outputs are)
So on the outside of the case.
Are you going to review the MSI "slim" hahaha 3 slot slim card - asus proart is 2.5 slot... what was msi thinking
Why didn't you ever show the I/0 ports?
Can anyone explain to me why the advertised boost clock speed is much lower than the actual boost clock speed?
Advertised boost clock on Strix 4080 Super OC is 2640MHz, but when gaming its actually closer to 3000MHz, with some overclock settings its above 3000MHz easy.
I had the same thing on my 4070 Ti, where the actual clock speed was 2900MHz+
I assume it's because I've increased the powerlimit to 131% in MSI Afterburner, which i always do, but not sure.
On the silicon quality, I got lucky with the 7900 XTX I got, it runs about 80-100MHz faster than what most reviewers saw, and cooler by 5-7° than most reviews of the make/model and zero coil whine. So yeah it's interesting how the silicon quality can vary from one to another of the same chip.
yeah pretty messed up when these prices are what they are
i would have picked this one up if available but I ordered one of the 999 cards I could find because why be choosey when the 1k ones are all the same.
What was the other msi expert you showed us?
love that cheese grater look
What happened to slightly more than msrp? 1050 at most for this piece when it's hardly better than the FE
For me it was what I could get. Availability is low and people are scalping, so picking this up for retail cost me less than a Founders Edition. Mad world! But I can’t wait to plug her in.
Updates? How’s the temp? Did you over clock it?
Good Stuff Paul :)
I like the aesthetics of this one for sure.
MSI is truly creating a new standard of refined GPUs. Both this and the Suprim are aestestically pleasing to the eye.
So uh, did you happen to run the card on an MSI motherboard and run MSI center or afterburner? Both will allow you to OC that card and MSI center has performance profiles. You might be leaving performance on the table without it.
Benchmarks aren't about overclocking. Most people just use out of box settings. It's better comparisons between cards to run everything stock. Plus since he showed that it runs slightly hotter it's not even going to overclock as well as an fe.
@@tomgreene5388 did I say you have to overclock it? no, I said the card would run better with the appropriate control software, where you COULD overclock it. Again, you leave performance on the table by NOT RUNNING THE CONTROL SOFTWARE.
@@grtninja you aren't making any sense man. Why would he add variables to a benchmarking video? That's literally the opposite if the point lol
@@tomgreene5388 again, overclocking was a small part of the original comment. I didn't say he had to overclock it I said use the intended control software, where *gasp* you might actually find a different bios or power profile for the card and get better overall performance. if you want to latch onto a part of a comment, go ahead.
I love the look will match right up with my junk msi b650-p motherboard that can't handle 4 sticks even after bios updates.. wish it wasn't MSI love the clean look and professional style..
Thought-out designs are rare to see on GPUs. I would pay the extra Eddies.
it makes me look at the 7900xt even more lol
MSI must be loving you today. 👍💓
The design looks pretty but only if you plan to vertically mount it. It's too bad that the design isn't incorporated on both sides because If you mount it horizontally, you will only see a huge flat surface with visible screws and an ugly sticker... (7:28)
Well i dont feel bad for getting a new reg 4080 for $1060 in nov during black Friday now lol
That msi card is sooo damn nice looking
It wasn't the MSI bios bug?
I was able to snag one of these and I am pleased with it. It is out performing my dell MSI OEM RTX 3080 10gb. My 3080 is a great card, after I repasted it to fix the missing thermal pads, it held temps and clock better and is still a great card. I'm passing it down to my fiancee in her first gaming machine. I undervolt my gpus and so far the Expert 4080 Super holds a 2850mhz clock at 45c average at full load drawing around 270w. Not too shabby. My 3080 after repaste held 2085mhz at 72c average (82c average on the t-junction) but at 325w at full load.
EDIT: I forgot to mention how quiet this Expert 4080 Super is...you knew when my 3080 was being worked because the fans would really ramp up.... this Expert edition card is almost asleep for most of my normal gaming, during RE4 it will hit closer to 50c but still silent compared to my 3080.
This is because I undervolt it in afterburner.
I had two 4080 FE supers in two different carts that evaporated as I was trying to complete the orders... I went with the MSI Expert because it looked like a FE and was in stock... but it went out of stock shortly after I was able to complete my order from Newegg.
I am genuinely surprised to hear that it is outperforming your 3080 10Gb....
The 4080 Super Expert has a higher TDP max than a 4080 Super FE. Maybe that’s why it was warmer?
I'm legit building a new PC and can't decide on a GPU - I was eyeing the 4080 super, but the prices I'm seeing are $1,500-$1,700. Might as well get a 4090 ASUS TUF for $2,000
i must of got lucky as i got a 4080 super fe and its boost clock goes to 2805mhz
I love the design, would be a no brainer for me at $50 premium for a no RGB or workstation/sff build. $150 is a bit much. Maybe I will find one when people panic sell their new cards when the new series launches.
Looks nice but doesn’t perform as well as others based on the roundup vid I’ve seen. Kinda unfortunate tbh since it does look nice.
The cooler looks nice!
Hopefully they add these unique designs into the next round of GPUs. I'd love to see cards that don't basically look like replicas of each other. Now they just need non-garbage GPUs to put them on.
It also goes to show A) what a not great value the 80 series cards were this time around, and just how stupidly powerful the 4090 is still.
I really like the look of this card, but another $150 for pure esthetics is a bit much. When I bought my 4080 Ventus it was only $30 markup. It’s funny how much the super markups are.
i dont know if i want to grate some chees or get fe is hard to find
Looks like a Luxury car grill. I'm buying AMD this year but this is a handsome GPU.
Good comparison. Like the grille on a recent mercedes or bmw.
MSI did a good job on designing this card, its beautiful
Nice looking card but unfortunate that you have to pay an extra $150 to get worse cooling compared to FE. Hopefully they can improve on this design for the 50xx cards.
Asus has left a bad impression on me in the last couple of years so I'm really looking into other brands again. It's nice to see great options from other brands as options. Especially when they are doing something a little different
Classic MSI.
Great design, but not great temps and no dual bios.
Why?
