For Tiberium War, the initial release of the game the cranes could build base defenses, a balance patch took that away and a campaign mission where you started with only a crane became more difficult.
I was WONDERING why that was a thing, because I came into Tiberium War after Red Alert 3 and in Red Alert 3 the crane used by the Soviets could build both base structures and defenses.

I remember in Tiberium Wars, before they removed base defenses from the crane, I would have several defense structures cued up. Then I would lure enemies into the base and deploy the defenses behind their forces. Was very disappointed when they removed that in Kane's Wrath
Disc version being the best version of the game is great. When they did only updates to multiplayer, that also effected the campaign, you basically redo the campaign on ultra-brutal hard unintended difficulty. Because your income is halved. Base defences are weaker. Power plants do not spread build area, and cranes can't build defences

For me the first time was mission 4 or RA2 because I didn’t play mission two or the tutorial. It was the awesomest moment to see this but command centres from missions 1,2, and 3 were this unit.
The MCVs is what got me interested in the technological lore of C&C, imagine being able to build up an entire city from just one vehicle. Now possible with 3D printers that spew out concrete buildings.
Construction yards was not only act as a base builder but it's also acts as the headquarter for that region area. Here in Thailand a person who actually being a gamer used to call this type of Base main base or the mother base.
Recently got the C&C collection on steam, have been playing through Tiberian Sun and Renegade. I've said this before but I love how you give so much depth to objects and units that could simply be seen as game assets.
I think there's another reasaon why Nod had underground construction facilities in the 2nd Tiberium war. The onset of Ion storms meant the EMP shut down everything on the surface, having them underground provided the facility with natural shielding against it allowing it to continue to operate during a storm. Although not represented in game, if there were also storage facilities Nod could quickly release an army of vehicles immediately upon the Storm ending.

In sense of the vehicle folding together, yes. But what we see ingame is always just a translation. The reason why bases in C&C can build this fast is do to gameplay and i think they delibaretly never specifyed how fast the actual build time is. I mean, how long does it take to train a Infantry Squad in C&C 3? Also, C&C3 plays in the year 2047. We can 3D print alot today, even buildings. That a Military is useing Nanon Assemblers for there forward bases in the next 3 decades, doesn´t sound unrealistic at all, anymore.
I kinda had a hypothesis that the Crane seen is similar to the Scaffolding erected when Starcrafts Terran Builders are constructing barrack and stuff. Kinda like a giant 3d Printer of sorts

The MCVs and the Construction Yards are your best friends without them you won't be able to build your bases, remember that they are the heart of your base and also acting as the Command Center since the building itself is an important structure for base building.

By the time of Firestorm and with their alliance with GDI more solidified, they seemed to be more militarized with GDI equipment, forgoing Nod's stuff and the improvised weapons/tools.

I had a nightmare that there were once 6 other MCVs 3 for Nod and 3 for GDI. In my Nightmare they called it Tiberium Twillight ... it was terrible i am so happy that this never existed . 😅😅
Whats weird is that i was playing Red Alert 2 and thinking is there more to MVCs than just build base. I was also wondering if there was a way to reduce building times, but i dont think that's happening, not with the buildings any.
When playing C&C 3 I actually rarely build the mini MCV's. I usually just build a crane about as far away from my refinary as I can since it allows buildings to be build around it and then I move my MCV to the other place I want to build. A crane and base expansion vehicle have the same cost but a crane has other uses too. The larger construction range of the MCV also allows it to do the job of 2 mobile units at times.

@@Saviliana I agree, while I still like a lot of units and designs from C&C 3 and will play it, unlike my boycotting and dismissal of #4; My canon for C&C still rests at the end of Tiberian Sun. I like the Scrin (the Nod "space ship alluded to a coming alien threat in Tib Sun), I like that things are building up to it, I just don't like how the executed the story of C&C 3. The Forgotten were... Forgotten, prominent characters killed off screen or retired. The change of the world's Tiberium flora and fauna that was so compelling in Tib Sun. I do think the oldest Redzones could still develop to the point of the pure massive crystals we seen in Tib 3, just I wanted everything from before to also carry over. I think I'd start the game with Anton Slavic still being alive, not killed off screen, and I'd keep the SG1 style storytelling and CGI we got from Tiberian Sun. The Kodiak and Montauk still being used (maybe even as proper MCV vehicles) and I think I'd have the destruction of the Philadelphia actually happen as the mid point of the games story, a turning point so to speak of things ramping up.
or perhaps even have the Philadelphia's destruction come from the Scrin Invasion rather than a Nod missile, Having the first half of the game still have GDI drop Troopers coming in would be too cool, and seeing them scramble from a space dominant doctrine to working with what they have on the ground
So a lot of the base building was done as "make believe"/"pretend" where they just don't show the workers moving supplies around and building. I understand why but it would have made the game more immersive and allowed for more options to attack and defend supply lines.
It was in-line with a certain design philosophy. The devs wanted an RTS you can just pickup and play without having to do busywork-this is why the CnC games only have 1 resource besides providing your base power (which is still inherently liked to income.). They didn't want complicate the gameplay too much by implementing things like supply and logistical lines but instead imply they are there via story. Just because something would be interesting to implement doesn't mean it's going to be fun.
C&C always designed to be fast paced combat heavy skirmish though, not resource management. Besides, lore wise, everything is assembled and transported underground. All the workers and engineers are underground. That's why the "build range" or ground control is core mechanic. And if you look at the animations, all buildings pop up from ground while all the ConYard / Cranes crane will deposit the materials underground when you build something instead of extracting it out.
another note about the drone platform is this large floating mass can destroy an enemy mothership if you order it to collide of the center core of the mothership
Funny things about GDI's MCV of 3rd war is it actually have a very boxy design but the silhouette is very round like a dome or a beetle. ... Of all the C&C universe MCVs. I like the design of Empire's MCV the most. Following by Nod 3rd war MCV.
@@CathrineMacNiel Terran buildings lift off. MCV set up and repack, MCV at least the one in C&C 1 is much smaller than the Construction Yard it deploy into. It could be transported inside another unit, which would be an interesting mechanic if all building could repack in such a way.

Multiple MCVs do speed up build times at least up to RA2.
In CnC3 and beyond, you can queue up multiple buildings as a trade off.

@@CathrineMacNiel Terran buildings lift off. MCV set up and repack, MCV at least the one in C&C 1 is much smaller than the Construction Yard it deploy into. It could be transported inside another unit, which would be an interesting mechanic if all building could repack in such a way.

can you put lasers and sonic fences back on after? i legit dont recall ever testing it

Does anyone know if the construction yard in RA and C&C such as Tiberian Sun can make some adjustments in the .ini files back to MCV or not?
I'm still not convinced Red Alert is canonically part of the Tiberian timeline. There's too many inconsistencies.
