This is a test of the 125 gr, 4 blade modular VBS Broadhead, by Vector Custom Shop--both the 7/8" bleeders & 1 1/8" bleeders.
For sharpening, consider using the Stay Sharp Guide "C" Sharpener, for curved blades.
Here is summary of my 2022 Testing Procedure & Scoring w/the scores of the VBS (7/8" bleeder) posted in parentheses as well.
Total VBS 125gr w/7/8" Bleeders Score: 88.47 = 9 Golden Arrows
1. Flight Forgiveness (20%, 16 pts)
This is not just a test of how heads fly out of my bow, as it was in the past. With a well tuned bow, properly built arrows & good form, almost every head flies well. That's why in the past most heads got a flight score of 9 or 10. But that doesn't help those who may not have perfectly tuned bows/arrows/good form. So now I am gauging Flight Forgiveness. This is based on how the head flies for me, how well it spins, how "sensitive" the flight is to imperfections, & the exposed surface area of the blades. The max score of a Mech is 20 & the max of a Fixed is 16.
2. Cut Size (20%, 15.13 pts)
The more tissue being cut, the more lethal the head, all else equal. The entrance cut, total cut, & width of the cut (a crucial variable for bloodletting) are all scored:
The entrance cut size is compared to a standard of 2.5" then that fraction is weighted to 7% of the score (1.19 +.875"/2.5" x 7 = 5.78 pts)
The max cut size is compared to a standard of 2.5" as well, then that fraction is is weighted to 7% of the score (5.78 pts)
The max cutting diameter is compared to a standard of 2.0", then that fraction is weighted to 6% of the score (1.19"/2 x 6 = 3.57 pts)
3. Blades (20%, 18.1 pts)
Initial sharpness (9%, 125 grs=10/10=9 pts ) & Edge Retention (9%, +50 grs=9/10=8.1 pts) are measured using the Edge On Up Sharpness Tester. The pressure needed for a blade to cut thru a copolymer wire is measured in grams.
Edge Retention is the loss of sharpness after the head is shot in Pen Test 1, thru 1/2" MDF & 2/3" rubber foam mat & Clear Ballistics FBI gel. For every 50 "grams" of sharpness lost, 1 pt is deducted from 10
What are some sharpness scores for common edges?
A butter knife takes 2000 grams of pressure to break the co polymer wire
A new high end cutlery edge: ~ 375 grs of pressure
A utility razor blade: 200 grs
Based on the many broadheads I have tested, here is my scoring scale:
Out of the Box Sharpness:
0-200 gr: 10
201-300 gr 9
301-400 gr: 8
...
Ease to resharpen or replace blades is judged & given 2% of the score. (5/10=1 pts) Use the Stay Sharp Guide "C" Sharpener.
4. Penetration (20%, 17.09 pts)
There are 3 penetration tests:
Pen Test 1: 1/2" MDF, 2/3" rubber foam mat, Clear Ballistics FBI gel. Depth of penetration is compared to a standard of 9" & weighted to 9% of the score. (7.25" = 7.25 pts)
Pen Test 2: Layered cardboard. # of layers penetrated is compared to a standard of 70 layers & weighted to 9% of the score (61 layers=7.84 pts)
Angled Penetration Test: How effectively does the head penetrate 1/4" MDF covered by carpet at a 45 degree angle. This accounts for 2% of the score. (2/2pts)
5. Durability (20%, 18.65 pts)
Each head is shot thru 1/2" MDF 3 times. Its condition is judged 1-10 & weighted to 12% of the score. (12 pts)
If a head survives that, it is then shot thru 22 ga steel plate twice. Its condition is judged 1-10 & weighted to 5% of the score. (8.5/10 = 4.25 pts)
If a head survives that, it is then shot into concrete once. Its condition is judged 1-10 & weighted to 3% of the score. (8/10 = 2.4 pts)
Steel plate & concrete are certainly not "realistic" mediums, but they do reveal the outer limits of a head's durability.
BONUS: Heads will be rewarded bonus points for special, intangible features such as: rotation, no O rings/clips for mechs, extra thick, hole size, other unique designs, etc.
VBS 7/8" Bonus: +1 excellent flight
+1 extra sharp blades
+1 modular design
+.5 extra thick blades (.057")
Total Score 7/8"= 88.47 = 9 Golden Arrows
Total Score 1 1/8"=87.47 = 9 Golden Arrows
Price = $23/head (Use Discount Code: LUSK for free ship)
Grading Scale:
90-100 10 Golden Arrows
85-90 9
80-85 8
70-80 7

That sharpness is mind boggling.....thats how sharp all broadheads should be.
Yup and I thought 200 was razor sharp but 170!
Generally a super fine edge is more prone to rollover. So you wouldnt want blades this sharp in every single design
@@Tugboat1110 that also depends on the bevel angle tho, I'd take a sharper blade any day
I use Iron Will and they are a very hard A7 tool steel. The hardness of these broadheads are less prone to rolling over. I had a pass through breaking two ribs and burying about 8" into the dirt. Broadhead took no damage and only took roughly two minutes of sharpening to get a razor edge back
Very impressive. And the edge retention with that sharpness was incredible...still at 175 after the shot.
Very cool design and impressive performance! Great video again John thank you for this content.
Thank you!
Wow that sharpness is amazing! Gonna have to try some of these babies. As always good review job John.
Thank you
I really like the design and versatility of the system! Great performance!
Yep.
Amazing broadhead! 👏 Another great video thank you sir!
Thank you Drew.
Sweet! I’m really liking this one. Have a feeling this is one mighty fine design and will easily make a pass thru hit. May be buying these
Nice.
Holy buckets!! Sharpness was insane. Also on the concrete test it cracked the block because it penetrated so deep. Was on the fence about getting these and some arrow from Vector but not anymore!! Ty Lusk for the free shipping code!!
Thanks Warren.
Just got a dozen arrows from them a few weeks ago and I’m really happy with them. Might have to try these broad heads next season.
Nice!
I love these heads too John! I'm going to have to try them.
:)
Great video !!!
Thank you!
Nice broadhead they held up very well, not bad sharpness out of the box , I still like my broadheads shaving sharp’ great review John as always
Not many get that sharp!
@@LuskArcheryAdventures no they don’t get that sharp specially straight out of the box
Great stuff guy
Thank you Richard.
That is an impressive head!!!
Yep.
They hit a home run 👍🏾👍🏾
Yep
@@LuskArcheryAdventures did I really win?
Great video those are pretty nice
Thank you
That sharp out of the box - cant go wrong with that. I might reconsider my decision to move to IronWills after seeing this video as IronWills really do cost their weight in gold, so these Vector broadheads look like they're going to be a great bang for buck!
:)
Awesome test as always. I'm ordering some for my girlfriend immediately for our Nov. Trip
Nice! Good luck.
I'm guessing all these configs net out to the same weight, hence the venting for the wider secondary blade, and some shape difference for the primary blades. This would make sense from an engineering/trajectory standpoint, but I think I would explore other options to keep each secondary blade option in the same durability zone. Separately, THANKS for the discount !!! You really take care of us.
Yep...that's correct. You can make them heavier, but can also keep them within the same weight, based on which ferrule you're using.
they certainly got the sharpness right 👍
Haha. True that.
Their broadheads look really good. I pre ordered the md3 after you reviewed it, with vectors statement that it would be available mid september, after emailing them when September came and went with no info, or heads, they told me mid November, I'm pretty disappointed as I wanted to use it for this season.
Sorry to hear that. Hope they come soon. I’ve found that most broadheads don’t hit their production dates, unfortunately.
😳 thats a very impressive head
Yep.
Good job
Thank you
Reminds me of the Space Shuttle broadheads my brother used on our Bison hunt. I imagine these to be a challenge to resharpen
Probably referring to the Shuttle T...some similarities. You can use a Stay Sharp Guide C Sharpener, designed for concave/convex heads like this one.
@@LuskArcheryAdventures Yup that has to be it. And thank you for the good info on curved edge sharpening solutions.
great review. Being I have not figured out or care to leave mechanical broadheads for fixed, I won't be buying them. However, THESE would be the ones I would buy if so. Badass in the concrete; stick with the 7/8" to help prevent flight offset from field point hit point.
Thanks Brian.
Such a great broad head review... Sincerely appreciate it.
Thanks Bill.
Sharpest head I can recall out of the box. The 1.5 cut looks to be a nice hog head. Great job again John. Didn't see the 1.5 cut get any action ? Looks like a real winner Team Vector. Sharp, great steel, ferrule. Should kill extremely well.
Thanks Mike. Yeah, I didn't test the 1.5. They just sent me one as a prototype.
Unless you're shooting some 80lbs monster bow or a crossbow i'd choose a smaller cut for hogs, more chance for passtrough and even an inch wide cut will kill the hog if you hit it in the vitals.
One thing I'd love to see added to your tests is flight noise. I know I'll probly catch flack for saying this is of all my hunting and reading. That a deer hears the arrow coming vs "jumping the string". The few experiments I have done I found broad heads with no holes are alot quieter. Anyhoo thought it would be a great thing to add. How to fully do it not sure? Maybe put a microphone next to the target while your doing the flight test.
Thank you. I have sure considered doing it. But there are a few obstacles. First, I don't have a long enough quiet place to do that test. Outside, there is so much variation in ambient noise that it would be difficult to really compare the noise of one head to another on different days. Inside, I need enough distance away from the sound of the shot....and also a very quiet place. I don't have that.
On a separate note, I really don't worry about arrow flight noise at all. Bow noise is huge cause an animal can pinpoint the origin--you! But a moving object could be a bird or bug for all they know. I've taken hundreds of animals and never seen it to be an issue. It may be...but I just haven't seen it or see how it could be. And I already use loud vanes--Blazers attached helically, so my arrows are already pretty loud as it is.
All that said, if I have a choice, all other things equal, I'd choose a solid blade over a vented cause they are quieter.
Holy sharp Batman.
haha Right?!
Jesus Christ what a monster broardhead!, This company has alot going for it, super looking, super sharp, super strong,!, I diffently got to get some for my self this season! Keep up the good work! Do they make it in 100 grain?
They do make a lot of variations.
Nice head for sure . 👍
Yep.
I’d be interested if it wasn’t for the concave blades (sharpening). I’m sure they would work great though! Really like the tanto tip and how they squared off the blade ends.
Vector says to just buy new blades (of course) kind of annoying
You can use a Stay Sharp Guide C Sharpener, designed for concave/convex heads like this one.
That's one mean looking Mamma Jamma, and the initial sharpness.....WOW!
Any input on a sharpening regimen?
You can use a Stay Sharp Guide C Sharpener, designed for concave/convex heads like this one.
One other thing John is I feel that there is a design flaw in the VBS. I know I can't shoot these with HIT's due to the rear of the bleeders are tight against the end of the arrow shaft. I was practicing with one and after a few shots into foam the bleeders left divots in the carbon. If I decide to shoot them I will have to go to a sturdier outsert. Probably the sharpest broadhead out of the box I have EVER tested!
That’s good observation. My arrows have a collar that protects that but not everyone’s does. I’ve seen the same happen with other Blade over Shaft designs, like the Exodus Full.
@@LuskArcheryAdventures Like when the larger bleeders broke and drove straight back through your insert and into the front of the carbon shaft! I just went outside and shot the MD3 and the VBS with an identical 4 vane AAE Pro Max set up on a RIP TKO. They shot within 1-2" of one another at 70 yards.
I think these will have to be the next fixed blades I try. Not really anything I don't like about them!
:)
Nice broadhead! Do you think these will fit on arrows with a collar? Like the victory vap or gold tip pierce? I like this one for sure
Should as long as there isn't a lip
Yeah, as long as there is no lip to them.
Wicket sharp. Was surprised at how well they flew.
Yep.
Lusk, great video! I may order these broadheads and arrows. What kind of knocks were you using?
The arrows come with Bohning Nocks
@@jaredsteilkie7303 I was wondering about the lighted knocks at 9:50
Sorry I meant to clarify it
I use Deepower Lighted Nocks...the ones I tested a few months ago. They've been awesome for me--and cheap!
@@LuskArcheryAdventures Wow! I actually watched that review and I ordered them as well. I’m running them this season. I’m glad to see you stand behind products you test! You never recommend something you wouldn’t use! Thanks again
How would you compare to Iron Will? I started shooting single bevel Iron Will in the Synder core system this year and absolutely love them. I'm shooting these on Vector 490g arrows. I've had a pass through breaking two ribs and buried about 8" in the dirt. The Iron Will held a edge so well, I only needed maybe 2 minutes of sharpening. The curved blades seems like they would be a challenge to sharpen..
I really like Iron Wills. My only complaint of them is the cut size. I like their Wides for that reason. I'd rather have a wider cut and cut more tissue and just have the arrow land on the dirt on the opposite side of an animal :)
These have a cut that is in between the Wide and the regular Iron Will. I like that. But they also have a 1.5" that is wider than the Wide :)
Question John - have you seen any bow shelf clearance issues with the big 1-1/8” bleeders?
I didn't have any issue with that. And my arrows are much shorter than my draw length.
Can you do your top three fixed blade broadheads and your top three mechanical broadheads for a video?
Thank you. So many great options. At the end of each year, I usually list my top 5.
Regarding arrows. Side note to let your audience know you shoot a FAD Eliminator into concrete! Folks, three of these arrows go for $700 !!!! Mr Lusk is dedicated to bringing us Data!!!
And that's not even their most expensive arrow right?!
Haha. The owner and I are great friends, so I don't pay that :) I have some of their other arrows that are $700 each.
@@LuskArcheryAdventures 😳
One thing I’m questioning on these! Might be a pain to sharpen with the curved blade
Yeah, it can be. But Stay Sharp Guide makes a “C” Sharpener for any curved blade, whether concave or convex.
If I can ever get my crossbow to shoot a cut on contact Broadhead this will probably be the one that I choose
Nice
John would you be interested in testing the NAP Razorbak5 I’ve recently come into a few packs of them they’re the heads Rambo used to blow up the helicopter lol , just think it would be cool I love the vintage broadhead tests
I don’t suspect they’ll get 9 golden arrows but I am curious to see how they’d perform
Yeah, I’d love to. I just need one pack. My address is 6159 Nottingham Dr, Johnston IA 50131 Thank you!
These heads look really good. Like Kudu points but even better???
Yep.
They seem to have made the Magnus black hornet better…I like it. Is it a pain to sharpen those curved blades?
It can be, but the Stay Sharp Guide C sharpener for curved blades makes it much easier.
Right after I watched you test the 1st one the MV3I bought 2 packs of them I still haven't receipt though that's been too much
Nice. Good luck!
Would these work with the half outs from GT Trad Classics for the .204 ID?
I’m sorry but I really don’t know. I’d call Method Archery and ask them that.
What size bleeder would you recommend for the vented 100s? Primarily hutting whitetail in IA.
Any size is fine. With an average weight arrow and draw poundage, length, I’d go with the larger size.
I received these and the MD3's. My sharpness tester showed the same thing ....crazy sharp out of the box for the VBS but not so much on the MD3. I am sure the steel is SO hard that it's tough to get them "razor?" For some reason my VBS impact low at 50-80 yards compared to my Iron Will's 🤔....I wonder if it's because my VBS are the vented model (100g/1.25"/7/8") and have a little more drag vs my IW being solid single bevel left?
Could be. They’ve flown very well for me though. And yes, they are pretty difficult to get super sharp. But they can get sharp enough and they hold their edge well.
@@LuskArcheryAdventures John are your VBS's solids or vented?
Bruh that concrete shot warped the brass insert
Bruh, so? Crazy that's all it did! Those FAD eliminator arrows he tests with are only $700 for 3. Crazy
@@montuckyman4982 That was the Hexx from Easton. He couldn't fit the Vector head on the Bishop arrows.
Most insert/outsert combos will be similarly strong purely based on material type and thickness. Although my new favorite is the Sirius half jacket system. It's just as tough for frontal impacts as the FAD Eliminators.
Yeah it did. The FAD Eliminators would've fared better :) I don't pay that price for them, the owner is a great friend.
Yep, Simmons Mako on steroids! looks like another winner from Vector.
:)
Goodness! Last 2 videos, I've spent some money! Great reviews. Please do your favorite fixed before I spend more money! Jk
Haha. I know the feeling! So much great stuff out there. I need to post some crappy ones to give the wallet a break :)
Out of all the fixed broadheads that’s you have test which one do you think has ultimately done the best overall in your test?
Good question, and really impossible to answer--cause set ups and shot distances and sizes of animals can all vary so much. That being said, I do rank them all in the Overall Score and I am posting a spread sheet in a couple weeks, on my annual Year End Summary video, that will have ALL the scores for each test category for 2022. It can easily be arranged in a ranking of any of the scoring categories, so everyone can make those determinations.
On his podcast with Aron snyder he continually remarks the qad exodus as the best broadhead all around. Price, durability, cut, flight, it's a great head for the money
@@feelsgooddoit my opinion is that it’s the best fixed head to. I made the switch to them last year after watching bunch of his videos and they met me expectations. Really don’t have anything bad to say about them and nothing but praises for them
@@eckertoutdoors6194 I personally don't use them, I have an affinity for really pricey heads. The qad and alot of similar heads will all fit the bill. Top heads for me l, sevr, swhacker, cutthroat 3 blade, valkyrie, md3, although I've never gotten my hands on the md3 because they are out of business.
So what is the cutting diameter of the main blade middle size? On their website it says 1 1/4” but in the video you say 1 1/8” and then at the end of the video during the scoring portion it says 1 3/16” main blade. So which one is it?
They make a few models. But the one I tested was listed as 1 1/4 and was actually 1 3/16.
That looks like a Simmons Shark combined with a Iron Will. 5/5 design lol
:)
I'm thinking 1-1/2" with 7/8" bleeders make awesome big bear, moose and hog head from any bow or crossbow, 👍👍👍
Yeah...great bear head for sure!
@@LuskArcheryAdventures ,, thanks for the approval.
Can't wait 4 next video..,
God bless you & your entire family.
Looks like a modernized Simmons
Yep
How much was that arrow the bleeders damaged? Ouch
Yeah, bummer. Glad it wasn’t one of my Bishop arrows :) But those Easton Hexx aren’t very cheap.
@@LuskArcheryAdventures Yeah, the Hexx is basically free compared to those Bishop's tho😂

Nice!
What’s your dl and weight
72 lb and 27"
Looks like a pain to resharpen?
Can be for sure. But Stay Sharp Guide’s “C” Sharpener is designed for all curved blades. That helps. They also sell replacement blades.
✌️🤩
Thank you
Just got mine in the mail and I'm a bit disappointed...the blades aren't sticky at all, they dont clean cut paper nor can they even cut a hair
Well that is disappointing. They’re not very difficult to sharpen, though. You can use any cylindrical or round sharpening rod and do it by free hand, or use the Stay Sharp “C” sharpener for curved blades.
@Lusk Archery Adventures Ive sent a email and hope they can make it right because I really like these heads, until then I guess I better order the "C" Sharpener
Not a fan of the blade over shaft design. A great head otherwise.
What is it you don't like about that?
@@LuskArcheryAdventures for the exact reason you could not use your Bishop shafts.
Where areas they in stock though
Unfortunately they were bought out and are not available right now.
@@LuskArcheryAdventures damn lol
