    This is a test of the 125 gr, 3 blade MD3 Broadhead, by Method Archery.
    For sharpening, pls watch this: • 344 sharpener by Stay ...
    Here is summary of my 2022 Testing Procedure & Scoring w/ the scores of the MD3 posted in parentheses as well.
    Total MD3 125gr Score: 88.87 = 9 Golden Arrows
    1. Flight Forgiveness (20%, 16 pts)
    This is not just a test of how heads fly out of my bow, as it was in the past. With a well tuned bow, properly built arrows & good form, almost every head flies well. That's why in the past most heads got a flight score of 9 or 10. But that doesn't help those who may not have perfectly tuned bows/arrows/good form. So now I am gauging Flight Forgiveness. This is based on how the head flies for me, how well it spins, how "sensitive" the flight is to imperfections, & the exposed surface area of the blades. The max score of a Mech is 20 & the max score of a Fixed is 16. The MD3 got 16 pts (it also received 1 bonus pt for excellent flight).
    2. Cut Size (20%, 14.25 pts)
    The more tissue being cut, the more lethal the head, all else equal. The entrance cut, total cut, & width of the cut (a crucial variable for bloodletting) are all scored:
    The entrance cut size is compared to a standard of 2.5" then that fraction is weighted to 7% of the score. (1.875"/2.5" x 7 = 5.25 pts)
    The max cut size is compared to a standard of 2.5" as well, then that fraction is is weighted to 7% of the score. (1.875"/2.5" x 7 = 5.25 pts)
    The max cutting diameter is compared to a standard of 2.0", then that fraction is weighted to 6% of the score. (1.25"/2 x 6 = 3.75 pts)
    3. Blades (20%, 18.65 pts)
    Initial sharpness (9%, 350 grs=8.5/10=7.65 pts ) & Edge Retention (9%, +0 grs=10/10=9 pts) are measured using the Edge On Up Sharpness Tester. The pressure needed for a blade to cut thru a copolymer wire is measured in grams.
    Edge Retention is the loss of sharpness after the head is shot in Penetration Test 1, thru 1/2" MDF and 2/3" rubber foam mat & Clear Ballistics FBI gel. For every 50 "grams" of sharpness lost, 1 point is deducted from 10.
    What are some sharpness scores for common edges?
    A butter knife takes 2000 grams of pressure to break the co polymer wire.
    A new high end cutlery edge: ~ 375 grams of pressure.
    A utility razor blade: 200 grams.
    Based on the many broadheads I have tested, here is my scoring scale:
    Out of the Box Sharpness:
    0-200 gr: 10
    201-300 gr 9
    301-400 gr: 8
    401-500 gr: 7
    501-600 gr: 6
    601-700 gr: 5
    701-800 gr: 4
    801-900 gr: 3
    901-1000 gr: 2
    1001-1100 gr: 1
    1101+ gr: 0
    Ease to resharpen or replace blades is judged & given 2% of the score. (10/10=2 pts) Use the Stay Sharp Guide Diamond Plate or "344".
    4. Penetration (20%, 16.97 pts)
    There are 3 penetration tests:
    Pen Test 1: 1/2" MDF, 2/3" rubber foam mat, Clear Ballistics FBI gel. Depth of penetration is compared to a standard of 9" & weighted to 9% of the score. (7.25" = 7.25 pts)
    Pen Test 2: Layered cardboard. # of layers penetrated is compared to a standard of 70 layers & weighted to 9% of the score (60 layers=7.72 pts)
    Angled Penetration Test: How effectively does the head penetrate 1/4" MDF covered by carpet at a 45 degree angle. This accounts for 2% of the score. (2/2pts)
    5. Durability (20%, 20 pts)
    Each head is shot thru 1/2" MDF 3 times. Its condition is judged 1-10 & weighted to 12% of the score. (12 pts)
    If a head survives that, it is then shot thru 22 ga steel plate twice. Its condition is judged 1-10 & weighted to 5% of the score. (5 pts)
    If a head survives that, it is then shot into concrete once. Its condition is judged 1-10 & weighted to 3% of the score. (10/10 = 3 pts)
    Steel plate & concrete are certainly not "realistic" mediums, but they do reveal the outer limits of a head's durability.
    BONUS: Heads will be rewarded bonus points for special, intangible features such as: rotation, no O rings/clips for mechs, extra thick, hole size, other unique designs, etc.
    MD3 Bonus: +1 excellent flight
    +1 extra triangular holes
    +1 extra durability
    Total Score: 88.87 = 9 Golden Arrows
    Price = $23/head (Use Discount Code: LUSK for free shipping)
    Grading Scale:
    90-100 10 Golden Arrows
    85-90 9
    80-85 8
    70-80 7
    60-70 6

    I’m not any sort of fan of a 3 blade whether 1 piece or not.
    But nobody in the world can dispute the damage and toughness of this head.
    I was mostly impressed with the heads hardness and resistance to chatter. Pretty amazing.
    Love to see some animals taken with it because @ 1.25 inch cut, that’s bigger than normal and it tracked dead on with field tip @ 30 yards.
    I’d like to see further yardages with its accuracy and its blood letting. I believe this head blades won’t flex and the hole sizes will be huge.
    It’s a exciting head and a great test John. Thanks again for uncovering a little known beauty.

      Thanks Mike. I've been shooting at 30 yards for a couple reasons. First, I can do it in my backyard :) Otherwise, I have to drive 20 minutes to the range and it costs $20 to shoot there. Second, I've found that if I'm getting a 1-2" group with my field points at 30 yds, then they're going to group fairly well at longer distances as well. I used to test every head at 80...then I switched to 70, then last year I switched to 40...now 30 :) With a well tuned bow and properly set up arrow and decent form, it seems pretty much every head flies fairly well out to distance.

    S7 is not generally known as a cutlery steel. Back in the late last century I talked a custom knife maker into building a knife for me out of it, despite his protestations. It took time but he did, and got a scary sharp edge on it. I nicked myself with that knife about every time I fooled with it. At 59 RC these 'heads should stay sharp for a long, long time.

    • @LuskArcheryAdventures
      @LuskArcheryAdventures  2 роки тому +1

      Yep. It's not a cutlery steel as much as it is a tool steel. But in a broadhead application, impact resistance is much more important than it is in cutlery. And S7 is amazing at impact resistance.

    After disappointment with the durability and customer service of TotA 175g heads last season, this is exactly what I've been looking for. A monolithic 3 blade with a large diameter cut, and available in weights beyond 100 grains. I was going to give annihilatilors a try, but I like the look of these a lot more. Wish they made a 150, but 125 will do.

      @@LuskArcheryAdventures very true. Just seems like grinding a new bevel in that hard of a steel would be very time consuming. Very well could be worth it in the end. They bugger is tough and appears to hold one one hell of an edge even after impact. If like to see the edge tested on those after each media impact. Barring the cinder block of course. I know you have done them before, but it’s been awhile. This head is awesome, but comparatively speaking it’s a bit less sharp out of the box. Seems like you could show the advantages of sharpening a head like this. 🤷‍♂️ Anyways, Ty for the discount. 👊🏻🙏🏻

    I would compare them with slick trick ss3 broad head, looks like the accuracy is a little better with slick trick, also cheaper price, and has same cutting diameter. ALSO Can sharpen both easy due to similar designs. Do you think in the long run this broad head would be better after multiple kills and resharpening, vs the ss3 due to the metal it is made out of? OR would both have a long life span in the quiver when resharpening?
    Thanks for your review.

    • @LuskArcheryAdventures
      @LuskArcheryAdventures  2 роки тому +3

      Well, this has a cutting diameter of 1 1/4" and the SS3 is 1 1/8. That's a significant difference. And the steel quality is night and day and will deform much less readily. As for flight, I was really surprised by how well these flew. I shot them out past 60 yds the other day and they were dead on with my field points.

  • @stick__shooter
    @stick__shooter 2 роки тому

    Looks very similar to the SS3 and the Ozcut Elite, but better quality steel. I may need to try these out. I would try the SS3 but they don't come in 125 grain, and the Ozcuts seem to be too soft and not hold an edge.
    Is there any advantage to this head over the Tooth of the Arrow 1" solid other than being able to sharpen on a sharp stone?

    • @LuskArcheryAdventures
      @LuskArcheryAdventures  2 роки тому +1

      Yeah, but this is 1.25" cutting diameter and those others are 1 1/8". And this is a bit shorter...and as you said, it's S7 tool steel vs much inferior steel. Any advantage over the TOTA is the steel--so edge retention & durability--and sharpening, as you said.

    • @LuskArcheryAdventures

      That sound was because I'm standing inside my house when I shoot, and the camera mic is flush with the bow, so it maximizes the initial sounds. And my helical Blazers make a lot of noise, but these heads are relatively quiet, due to them not being vented.

      i get my 3 blade one piece solid heads shaving sharp in about 2 minutes on sandpaper, a file, or a flat stone. i have heard several people say they cant get them real sharp, but it has never been the slightest problem for me. i practice with the same heads i hunt with. a few strokes and im shaving arm hairs. the easy re-sharping of this style head is a big selling point to me.

    Nice three blade. I like that it is a good tool steel. Not a fan of how short it is though and how steep the blade angles are. I like the longer three blades with a more shallow blade angle for better penetration, but it looks like this head will do the job just fine. Is it made in the U.S.A.? If not, I am going to have to label it complete garbage.

    • @LuskArcheryAdventures
      @LuskArcheryAdventures  2 роки тому +2

      Yeah, US made. But in all my testing, the shorter heads far outpenetrate the longer heads...at least in every medium I've ever tested them in. In some ways, it's counter intuitive, but that's what's happened--check out the penetration of these, Tooth of the Arrow, Exodus, SS1, etc. Then compare them to heads like Montec, or the longer VPAs. That 3:1 ratio thing is misapplied in a cutting application. The extra friction of the longer blades impedes penetration as well as flight.

      @@LuskArcheryAdventures or is it that the steeper blade angles does not allow the ballistic gel to grab the shaft as quick a shallower angled blade would? The only test media that really matters is live animals with hides, bones, and slippery organs with blood.

      They're both great heads. The difference is largely the difference between replaceable blades and solid construction. Each have their advantage. These will be more durable, overall, due to the geometry and steel. And they're super easy to sharpen by being 60 degrees like this. But the Exodus are nice in that you can just replace the blades if you want to....and they're really sharp.
