- This is a test of the 150 gr Sevr Robusto.

Here is summary of my 2022 Testing Procedure & Scoring w/ the scores of the Aftermath posted in parenthesis as well.
Total Sevr Robusto Score: 93.68 = 10 Golden Arrows
1. Flight Forgiveness (20%, 20 pts)
This is not just a test of how heads fly out of my bow, as it was in the past. With a well tuned bow, properly built arrows & good form, almost every head flies well. That's why in the past most heads got a flight score of 9 or 10. But that doesn't help those who may not have perfectly tuned bows/arrows/good form. So now I am gauging Flight Forgiveness. This is based on how the head flies for me, how well it spins, how "sensitive" the flight is to imperfections, & the exposed surface area of the blades. The max score of a Mech is 10 (20 on 20 pt scale) & the max score of a Fixed is 8 (16 on 20 pt scale).
2. Cut Size (20%, 19.08 pts)
The more tissue being cut, the more lethal the head, all else equal. The entrance cut, total cut, & width of the cut (a crucial variable for bloodletting) are all scored:
The entrance cut size is compared to a standard of 2.5" then that fraction is weighted to 7% of the score. (2.0"+.33"/2.5" x 7 = 6.54 pts)
The max cut size is compared to a standard of 2.5" as well, then that fraction is is weighted to 7% of the score. (2.33"/2.5" x 7 = 6.54 pts)
The max cutting diameter is compared to a standard of 2.0", then that fraction is weighted to 6% of the score. (2.0"/2 x 6 = 6 pts)
3. Blades (20%, 18.95 pts)
Initial sharpness (9%, 200 grs=10/10=9 pts ) & Edge Retention (9%, +25 grs=9.5/10=8.55 pts) are measured using the Edge On Up Sharpness Tester. The pressure needed for a blade to cut thru a copolymer wire is measured in grams.
Edge Retention is the loss of sharpness after the head is shot in Penetration Test 1, thru 1/2" MDF and 2/3" rubber foam mat & Clear Ballistics FBI gel. For every 50 "grams" of sharpness lost, 1 point is deducted from 10.
What are some sharpness scores for common edges?
A butter knife takes 2000 grams of pressure to break the co polymer wire.
A new high end cutlery edge: ~ 375 grams of pressure.
A utility razor blade: 200 grams.
Based on the many broadheads I have tested, here is my scoring scale:
Out of the Box Sharpness:
0-200 gr: 10
201-300 gr 9
301-400 gr: 8
401-500 gr: 7
501-600 gr: 6
Ease to resharpen or replace blades is judged & given 2% of the score. (7/10=1.4 pts)
4. Penetration (20%, 15.20 pts)
There are 3 penetration tests:
Pen Test 1: 1/2" MDF, 2/3" rubber foam mat, Clear Ballistics FBI gel. Depth of penetration is compared to a standard of 9" & weighted to 9% of the score. (6.5" = 6.5 pts)
Pen Test 2: Layered cardboard. # of layers penetrated is compared to a standard of 70 layers & weighted to 9% of score.
(54 layers=6.95 pts)
Angled Penetration Test: How effectively does the head penetrate 1/4" MDF covered by carpet at a 45 degree angle. This accounts for 2% of the score. (2/2pts)
5. Durability (20%, 18.45 pts)
Each head is shot thru 1/2" MDF 3 times. Its condition is judged 1-10 after each shot & weighted to 12% of the score. (10/10 = 12 pts)
If a head survives that, it is then shot thru 22 ga steel plate twice. Its condition is judged 1-10 & weighted to 5% of the score. (9/10=4.5 pts)
If a head survives that, it is then shot into concrete once. Its condition is judged 1-10 & weighted to 3% of the score. (6.5/10=1.95 pts)
Steel plate & concrete are certainly not "realistic" mediums, but they do reveal the outer limits of a head's durability.
BONUS: Heads will be rewarded bonus points for special, intangible features such as: rotation, no O rings/clips for mechs, extra thickness, hole size, other unique designs, etc.

Loved the video John! Good stuff. I did have a sevr 2.0 125 gr open in my quiver while hiking, and the O ring stretched too much to use. I used a piece of thread to secure it.. Worked great, excellent entry and penetration. And you are correct, "$5 ain't much, but it helps"

Thanks for the comment. I've heard of some people using 2 O rings..and another buddy just bought some slightly stiffer O rings from Amazon. I tested them and they worked well.

I'm new to bowhunting and have really enjoyed watching your content to help decide what I want for a setup to start out. I really like the features of the Sevr Robusto, especially that I could practice with it without using a different head thats supposed to be the same like other brands. I'm thinking about pairing it with the slash brand inset blade arrows. Would love to see a video of you testing the slash arrows with a broadhead to make sure the design allows for the blades to still have enough contact to deploy after a wound channel has already been established. Thanks James. I haven't tested the Slash Brand Arrows. You'll want to make sure that you don't have too much cutting edge, or you will not penetrate very well.

A few years ago a friend gave me 12 of the original “ Ulmer edge” heads still in their packaging. You know I’m a fixed blade guy but this video kind of gets me motivated to try them on a doe or pig. 👍👍

Great review as always John. I bought some Robustos last year along with the 1.5”, but have yet to try them on game. Based on all of your tests they’re super durable, but mechanicals still scare me.
The only reason I would have a mechanical in my quiver is to shoot at rabbits or something.

Yeah, I hear ya. I used to feel that way as well. I felt the same about Drop Away Rests when they first came out. I suppose trad bowhunters feel that way about all the moving parts of a compound bow.
Though I'll be using fixed blade (Jager 150g) for my buck/wild boar hunting these are already in my bow quiver for my doe hunting this year. I used them last year out of my v3 @ 70lbs and it’s another great broad head from Sevr . All three whitetails did not got more than 40 yards

Man, I love these heads. Highest score by far in 2022. Shot a doe in the butt with one and it only went 60-70 yds with a really nice blood trail.

I just pulled out my old PSE Carrera. 2003. Put a Robusto on. I’m thinking about using it on this old compound. Shoots great. Doesn’t sound like a problem. I’m down to 65 pounds. But the set up shoots great.

I shoot a low IBO, have for year due to old neck injury. I have a 29 inch draw at 55lbs. I’ve shot every head under the sun, but the magnus has been my go to for 20 years. I really want to try a 150gr expandable, this maybe the one!
Magnus are great heads. This would be a good choice for a 150 gr like that.
It buckled in the concrete because your arrow is like 600 grains. Majority of crossbow bolts are 300 grains. I’d like to see a comparison using a lighter arrow. It’d be very cool if your tests had a crossbow comparison. With the growing amount of crossbow hunters I’d bet your channel would receive A LOT more traffic if you also used a crossbow during testing.
Thanks for the comment. Yeah, I've sure thought about branching out into crossbows. If I were retired, I'd do it. But right now my life is beyond full as it is :) I test all the heads with the same weight arrows and I need that extra weight to keep them from breaking :)
I actually just bought some daysix broadheads and I don’t think I’m gonna have the heart to leave my Sevr in the quiver because they have been good to me for 3 years now
So many great choices in broadheads. But always remember, shot placement is the biggest issue :)

very impressive for open on impact as im not a fan of any of those though. Had friends and family members lose deer break blade hardly any penetration when hitting bone and etc. but if i were to ever use any it would be these! they are 150 grain which allows more metal to be stronger most broadheads are 100 or 125 u test and id love to see these broadheads and others actually shot through deer shoulder bones!

I hear what your saying about the ballistic gel test… however, to prove a point: would you film that bounce-back happening in slo-mo for a demonstration?

I don't have a camera that can film it that slowly...at least I don't think. The concrete shots are the slowest I can get. I'll try to show it in brand new gel, next time I get some new blocks. With the naked eye, you can see the cut extending into the gel in many different heads.
Maybe it’s time to get a crossbow for some of your testing? I would like to see the test results at higher speed, as they are sold for crossbows.
Yeah, I will add that at some point in the future. The less surface area, the better the flight...at any speed. But higher speeds are less forgiving. These Sevrs are amongst the very best flying heads made.
I finnaly went ahead and ordered 7 of these so far iv been running a 200 grain vpa single bevel head as my main broadhead but im really interesting in trying these 150s on mule deer and white tails but it's definitely nice to know they are solid enuff should I need it for elk and moose.

Yeah, I did with my older test regimen. I often re test heads when I update the test regimen.
I think it would be super cool if you could use A wooden dowel in front of the ballistics gel to mimic a bone so we could see what the pivot looks like in side the gel
Thanks for the suggestion. Sevr has a vid of a bone inside of gel and a blade pivoting when it hits it, on their website, to demonstrate that. I've thought about doing it, but it could take me a lot of shots till a blade hit it :)

My quiver is full of robustos this yr just waiting on that opportunity now. I'm curious if you've ever done a sharpness test after shooting them in the locked in position. When I put the set screw in it seems like it pushes the blade out and it is exposed. It's not a big deal I just bought a couple extra for practice. My field tips during practice season are a hundred I should just buy 150gr field points sevr is always tuned the same as field points.
Yeah, even if the blades are fully enclosed within the ferrule--a target will push material up against them. Honestly, I never even bother practicing with Sevrs, but only use field points...they really fly that well.
I actually upgraded to these from the 100 grain only because I wanted a heavier head.

have you tested any of the gator style heads where the blades do not lock in place? i have tried a lot of heads but never tried that style. BPS sells them in an all stainless model. the only thing about them that concerns me is that they always have to have pressure on the front for the blades to be held open. i wonder is soft lung tissue firm enough to keep the blades in the full open position?
Yeah, I've tested the Truglo 2 Blade; you can find that vid here on my channel. When the blades retract like that, it does aid in penetration---but also decreases the wound channel.

I was going to do that, but heard they are not going to be making them in the future, just due to lack of demand. So I figured I'd just skip it.

Yes, that's exactly it.
I suspect bent ferrule has to do with it being longer for the larger blades to fit into.
It's a bit longer than the 1.5 for sure.
A note about the factory blades, While they do cut at 200, its a factory cut edge. With a bit of time and a fine hand, a person can hand sharpen them to a bit better. Not that its needed at all, Just putting it out there for people who care to put the effort in for that Tiny bit of difference.

Killed a doe last year. Sevr 2.0, 440 grain total arrow weight, 29 inch draw, 70 lbs draw. 20 yard shot. The arrow went through the deer cutting through the top of the heart. It then buried into the dirt. The blades were damaged from me pulling the arrow out of the dirt. The contact point of the blade against the ferrule. I’m not complaining, doe went about 40 yards and dropped. They’ll definitely be in my quiver this year. 😁
Unfortunately I’ll need a new bow. My limbs have stress fractures and the factory won’t warranty the repair. 😢

Absolutely. Makes do difference what they're shot out of. The only difference from the 2.0 is the steel and thus the thickest of the ferrule/tip. I've taken multiple animals with them out of my compound.
Killed my first bull elk at 91 yards with sevr 2.0. Complete pass thru never found my arrow

To all the naysayers about mechanicals I killed tons of deer with rocket broadheads and other mechanicals and I have never had an issue. Some designs are better then others tho. I currently shoot ramcats and think they are on e of the best fixed blades out there.

I bought some of the sevr 100gr. 1.5 I had on one of my arrows if a turkey walked thru I was going to use it but for deer I just use fixed heads, I'm wondering if it hits one of the tuff arteries would it pivot away from that ? I know I've seen some of your kills and they sure look good and if I decide to shoot a mechanical head it would be this one the 1.5 because I only shoot 60lb bow
I don't think an artery being hit at that speed will cause the blade to pivot. But everything in broadhead design is a tradeoff. The pivoting heads can prevent deflection but could also potentially cause a bone or other hard tissue to not be cut with that blade.
Hey John. I have one of those " odd" quivers.i keep forgetting these are rear deploy and i actuly broke a couple o rings while pushing my arrows into my quiver. My question is this. Can i use like a swhaker band to secure the blades? Have you ever had this problem? If so what would you recommend as a back up o ring? Thanks.
If you have a foam quiver, you can just cut some holes in it for these, or any other mech. I would not use a different O ring, or even multiple Sevr O rings unless I thoroughly tested in beforehand.

Now that they have the 1.75 broadheads what would you recommend for a crossbow that shoots 380fps the robusto 2.0 or the 1.75?
Either one would be fine. The extra weight of the 150 gr Robusto would be ideal...but any of them will work.
I was so haoppy when you got to the 7 min mark bc I was saying out loud that exact thing could happen when you were swinging the blades back and forth. Even expanding on that point, could it not clip a rib on the way in closing one blade then traveling thru your game only partially open? I will stick to the Grim Reaper xbow head. 125 grain. No silicone O-Rings. and it is 3 blades of destruction and a whitetails worst nightmare!
The thing is, the blades open on the hide, and lock open the entire way through an animal. There are less ways for them to fail to open than your grim reapers, and I doubt you've had any issues with them. As for the exit issue, I can see it being something that happens once or twice, but even then you have more cut than most of the two blade fixed heads that everyone seems to be raging about
it will never be partially open it opens and locks into position it just pivots inside of the frame once it passes the bone it pivots back to full cut it never closes until you retrieve arrow and you unlock it. I've heard a lot of good things of the head you mentioned shooting but it will not hold up to the same test as this head I know we're not shooting thru steel plate and concrete but there is a chance you will hit hard bone.
@@papajohnsy6659 thx, just curious how u see more ways for the GR to fail, when it has no O-ring? And I don't ever re-use a mechanical head so I don't care if they are one and done. It cost as much as a sandwich to replace it.
Glad you're happy with those heads. There are lots of great choices. I wish GR made a rear deploying mech, cause if you don't get a pass thru, that entrance hole is pretty small.
Sevr is what Rage wants to be if/when it grows up.
I really like the Slip Cam design & easy opening of the Rage...I just wish they would make them more durable.
Probably bent due to being stainless versus titanium which is extremely hard 🤔
Maybe...but steel is harder and more resistant to impact...but titanium is lighter.
Tool steel would be nice.
I've been shooting THORN RIFT 2.2 BROADHEADS & HAVE HAD NO ISSUES WITH THEM SO FAR , I'VE RECOVERED ALL DEER I'VE SHOT & EVEN THE ONE DEER I SHOT CHASING A DOE & HIT IN GUTS & BROADHEAD EDITED INTO REAR INSIDE HAM BEFORE BACKING OUT & THAT DEER ONLY MADE IT 100 YARDS MAX ... HOW DO YOU FEEL IN YOUR HEART OF HEARTS AND YOUR HONEST OPINION ON WHAT BROADHEAD YOUR QUIVER WOULD BE LOADED WITH IF YOU WERE GOING AFTER YOU ONCE IN LIFE TIME TARGET BUCK ? HOW DO U FEEL ABOUT THE THORN RIFT 2.2 BROADHEADS 125GR ? I'VE WATCHED YOUR VIDEO ALREADY I BELIEVE BUT HOW DOES THE RIFT HOLD UP TO OTHER MECHANICAL BROADHEADS IN YOUR BOOK ...

If my crossbow shoots a 400 grain bolt at 315 fps, is the 150 grain Robusto to heavy for it? Should I use a 100 or 125 instead? I know heavy is usually better but wasn’t sure when it came to lower speed crossbows.

It looks like the holes in the steel plate was much smaller than 2”? Also the holes in the MDF were hard to see but looked like they were also far smaller than 2”. Were the blades fully open after going through the steel plate and MDF or did they collapse over each other?
Regardless...they made it past the cardboard test unlike the garbage...I mean Rage🤣

Just surprised they only make a fixed blade size hole through MDF or the steel plate. I guess that is why they are durable. Easier on the blades if they are not fully deployed
What can happen with steel plate is that the 2 wing butts that stick out hit the steel and punch thru it...which forces the blades to open, but they're opening as they pass thru the steel plate and are hindered from opening fully by the density of the steel. That happens with a number of mechs; especially gator style heads. That's why I due the opening test with leather to more accurately replicate an animal. Sometimes when I test the Sevrs on steel, the blades are locked open and I can't close them...so I shoot them fully open...then they cut a wider hole in the steel plate.

They don't pay me to do the videos. The reason I go thru all that is because some of those features are really unique and most people have no idea how they work. Like the blades interlocking/overlapping is patented, so other broadheads can't use it--but it's the reason they are so durable. And I get a ton of questions about them all the time, so I figured I'd just go into greater detail. I knew a bunch of people would be "bored" with it...but figured they knew how to use the fast forward button :)

@@tracychilds3546 Laugh all you want. I dropped a doe last year with the 3" 150 gr. swhacker where it stood. Massive hole and destruction. Blew through and was sticking 5" into the ground behind the deer. Was able to do light touch up and back in my quiver it went.

Thanks Drue. I used to use 1/8" flat bar. I may add that in for some of the really tough heads in the future.

I've tested the Hyde. You can find that vid here on my channel. They did well...but not as durable as these.
Heard ot about this company. Was excited to see the performance but was once again let down by mechanical heads. All the hype for a uppity Rage... such a pity😮💨

I am quite literally in amazement at the level of ignorance shown in that statement. It toes the line of being deliberately misleading or up to a bold face lie. It's clear you have no real interest in what let me down about the BH, but instead only feel the need to defend your own emotional attachment to something you must protect. I am fixed blade die hard. Never used a single mechanical in my life, but I bought some Sevr 1.5" 125's to try on a doe this year. I feel like I am cheating on my wife. If my dad sees them he will heckle me to death.

Only speaking for Whitetails but y shoot a 150grain 2inch cut Sevr that goes around bone when u can shoot a 150grain 3inch Swhacker that goes through bone and does way more damage and doesn't dull it's blades upon entry. Yeah Sevr is more durable shooting steel plates and concrete and all that nonsense but on a deer it's irrelevant
Thanks for the comment Timmy. Everything in broadhead design is a trade off.
The purpose of the pivoting blades is to prevent the deflections that often happen within an animal, especially with large 2 blade heads like you've mentioned.
A 3 inch Swhacker can make a great internal wound channel...but that size can also impede penetration...and if you don't get a an exit hole, all you get is a 1 inch opening with a Swhacker.
Although this performed well, I’m not sure why it’s the highest scoring… compared to a lot of single bevel heads you’ve tested, it lacked penetration, durability and the ability to reuse.
Simple they're his favorite brand broadhead. All you need to to is watch the start of the video to know lol he spent more talking about the broadhead then he did testing. 🤣

That's a good comment. It's all based on my scoring system. If you look in the vid description, I explain how I score everything. And I base some of the scoring on a typical "Deer" sized animal, as I mention in the first vid where I explained it all. 20% of the score goes to the cut size--the entrance hole, diameter of the cut, and total cut. So a smaller 2 blade head may penetrate much better and may be more reusable...and it will get points for that...but it won't get as many points as a larger cutting head like this one.
Another 20% goes to Penetration
And 20% for Blade Sharpness/Edge Retention
And 20% for Flight
And 20% for Durability.
That's why I always say, "Check out the score sheet to see how it performed in the areas that matter to you the most."
Some people may have a lighter set up or are hunting a really big animal and really want a great penetrating head...so a head like that may not get the highest score overall, but will get a great score in penetration.
